Black and silver are aesthetic and true patrician taste. And although $200 is not the most I've spent on a reel I'm certainly not going to pay that much for a reel that has no advantages for freshwater over cheaper and arguably better reels

I think it still has bearings just not ball bearings. They're made out of some polymer they designed.

>>1057824

Black and Silver are overdone

Well it's suppose to cast lighter baits better and cast farther than other reels but we'll have to see if that's actually true.

They're basically the same bearing. The boca ceramics are ABEC-7 just like the Hawg Tech ceramics. There's no reason to spend that much money, but you do you anon.
>>
>>1057874
If I wanted a bearingless casting reel, I'd pick up one of the old 1960s knuckle-busters for $5.
You can even find models with free spool and backlash prevention controls available too, though that starts getting expensive. You're talking going up into the $20 range.
At that point you could just buy a zebco and be done with it.

Don't you know it's the patriarchy's fault that fishing rods are typically black/gray?! It has nothing to do with it being a neutral/non obnoxious color. Same with those cork handles.

>>1057916
Anon you compared it to a zebco. If that's not trash then idk what is.

But I do get what you're saying. It's suppose to be made with some super Gucci polymer to help with casting distance. I'm gonna get one when they come out and see if it's really all that or just hype.

fishing is a gener neutral sport, and if that kid thinks holding a normal black or silver fishing rod/reel is too masculine, just tell her that she is "pushing gender roles in a creative and expressive way" even though she is just fishing. snowflakes like to hear that they are doing something good and "making an impact" (whatever that means) no matter how trite and mundane whatever they are doing is.

Everything I wanted to say has already been said, so...

For some real advice, Pflueger Presidents are great reels. $59 normally and they have a pink one. If you can't find a pink rod you like, maybe it would match a gold Fenwick Eagle. That's a solid setup that he/she won't need to replace within a couple months if they enjoy the hobby, but at the same time if "it" doesn't enjoy fishing and the rod ends up in the back of the garage, you aren't out too much $$$$.

Skid do you take your fly rods with you on your bike? If so do you put it in a backpack or have something to strap it to. My buddy's and I want to take fishing shit with us when we go riding up north since the trails go past a bunch of secluded ponds that people fish. >>
>>1057998
>Skid do you take your fly rods with you on your bike
yeah
> so do you put it in a backpack or have something to strap it to
depends on what im doing. if im bringing a lot of gear, yeah ill stuff it in a back pack. if im not ill just tie a rope to the rod tube and use it like a slin and just throw it over my shoulders so it sits on me diagnally (drawing a line from my left shoulder to my right hip, basically), then only bring what i need for that set up (just the one spool of tippet, just one fly box, just one pair of pliers or forceps, and my edc pocket knife). usually i can fit the tippet and pliers in the tube with the rod, then i can just put the fly box in a pocket. its actually not as shite as it sounds. just remember to take them off and walk them past any gnarly trails, if you fall you could break your gear or hurt yourself on it.

>>
>>1058019
the sling is also nice when you are actually fishing too because you can just put your rod tube on your back and not have to worry about misplacing it in the brush or some prick walking off with your empty rod tube (better they get the rod tube than the rod but still, a cheap cabelas brand rod tube is still like $30)

So here's the skid rig that red I got was hooked on. Seems like a lot of unnecessary nonsense to me. The hook was on the snap to the right.

Also, they used some kind of half assed cinch knot to tie it. I'm amazed it didn't come off when they were casting kek.

Jon B. is the only one I really watch anymore. I used to watch Lunkers stuff a lot, but now I really only like military Mondays. I guess one of the problems with getting more popular is trying to pander to the masses.

Jon B actually goes to different places that require different techniques and catches different fish. Lunkers kinda just catches bass doing the same thing every time. Fun to do, but not fun to watch.

LFG is still the GOAT channel.

The hook goes on the short one at that top and the wieght on the long one at that bottom. It allows your bait to swim around more freely. It also gives you steel for toothy fish and only one knot to worry about. They might seem stupid because you can buy them at Wal-Mart and your father used them but they fucking work. I did not stop using them for that very reason. I still have other rigs and styles that I use for different situations but if I want to toss a croaker in the surf for reds then they are my normal go to.

So go to the creeks, use smaller gear including smaller hooks and go deeper.
The sunfish are still hungry, I promise-they are not complicated creatures.
When I have problems catching sunnies, the issues I usually have are my bait is too far above them (water is hotter than they want and they're holding DEEP) or their mouths aren't big enough to get around the hooks; they'll just nibble the bait off the hook.

>High fishing pressure strategies
I primarily fish public parks in a city of 350,000 people, so I get it. They're overfished to hell and back just like your lakes.
My secret is to use ultralight, go where nobody else goes and use what nobody else uses.
Where I am, if people fish with worms they get a hook big enough to fit a whole worm onto it. If they don't they use Texas rigged plastics in June Bug. As a result, ANYTHING that would possibly take either of those things is out of the water already. It's long gone, kept and eaten the instant its mouth fit around the hook.
If you want to catch things in that situation you need to adapt. Worm hooks have to be half the size of everybody else's, and soft plastics don't catch shit here, so I use spinners. Again they can't be big-1/16oz rooster tails (white and black) are what I use, and they work well. Usually I'm the only one on the water who's caught anything, and often I can catch half a dozen gills and bass in an hour.
>inb4 dinks
Most times yes, but such is life on a lake with high fishing pressure. And better dinks than nothing.
Get to where you're catching fish consistently-even if they're just dinks-and the big ones will come.

The other thing is to go farther afield. The small creeks you mention are worth checking out for the very reason you're dismissing them-people are thinking there's nothing in them. The farther away you are from a trail, fishing pier or boat ramp, the less fishing pressure, the better the fishing likely is.
>>
>>1058459
but a 2 or 3 weight fiberglass fly rod for cheap, then a cheap reel to hold line, then cheap no name amazon line to suit. even the smallest dink will be fun

You gotta find the secret spots in industrial areas and commercial areas and shit. Around here where minorities are the majority, basically everything that is legal to fish is overfished and overpressured. Abu Garcia Silver Max thoughts? Good? No? Other left hand retrieve casting reels?
>>
>>1058560
Not bad for baby boys first bait caster but I wouldn't recommend for anything else. And as far as left hand retrieve goes I've yet to see a reel that doesn't come in both left or right
>>
>>1058560
They are decent reels for the price. Lots of us have owned Black Max and Silver Max reels. They are cheaper memecasters, but they get the job done and I think of all the people who owned them, there has only been one person who disliked his Black Max for some reason.

I still use my Silver Max a bit. It's good for heavier stuff with the 30lb braid. Not the greatest for light and finesse stuff, but it is also easy to use and fairly forgiving and normally you have to spend some $$$ to get a baitcaster that will really do well with light baits.

Aside from that, all baitcasters should be offered in both R and L retrieve. My first two were R which seemed odd coming from spinning reels, and my third was L and even as a righty it feels better. I will always buy left hand retrieve from now on.

One more thing if it's your first baitcaster- I prefer the higher speed reels. I think the normal Silver Max is 6.4:1, which is fine. But after buying a 7.1:1, I will always go with faster reels when I have the option. Makes it easy to retrieve baits fast over weeds and shit. It's much easier to go slow on a faster reel than it is to go fast on a slower geared reel.

And as well as Abu does baitcasters, I wouldn't hesitate to get another Lew's combo. I have the Mach 1, TXfag had the Mach 2, and they have a handful of combos for a little less that look nice.

Anyone else have experience catching flatheads from a kayak?

I gave it a go here in central Texas, where I spent early morning to midday drifting the deeper parts of river bends with live bluegill under a slider sinker rig. When that didn't produce, I started casting towards log jams and overhanging shoreline. All I got was a tiny one when casting into a flat where I saw some tailing around mid morning.

I'm going to try again, but this time, I'm going to head out in the afternoon and fish as late as I can. Also, I'm going to switch to a 3 way rig so my bait stays a little more off the bottom and doesn't have as much freedom to swim off into submerged tree branches.

A record doesn't necessarily mean that body of water has the biggest or healthiest fish though. It means some guy got lucky and happened to catch the biggest bass in the lake. It could be a complete fluke and all the other bass could be >10lbs

He's saying those things make the best bass fisheries. Not that Alabama and Missouri have no access. Many states do. Alabama and Missouri don't necessarily have it the BEST when it comes to things like like water quality, ease of access, average fish size, number of fish, pressure, etc even if a single particularly large fish happens to come from the area.

I fly fished in a new semi-trout / smallie creek
Started out early with half pound lmb, but couldnt make any other decent bass follow up.
I noticed a bigger lmb that chased my woolly bugger right before making a roll cast.
Then some dude on spinning gear catches a nice smallie just out of the whole i finished fishing.
So basically I know big bass were in there, but the only takers were sunnies.

Any advice?
>>
>>1058778
What >>1058782 said.

I'm sure Alabama/Georgia has fantastic fisheries. I just don't know if it has the BEST one and records aren't a solid way to figure that out.
>>
>>1058795

Catch the sunnies and use them as bait for the bass.
>>
>>1058782
I understood what he was trying to say. I'm just saying it's bullshit.

His criteria compete against each other. A place with piles of fish will necessarily have a smaller average size because there's only so much food to go around, while a place with huge fish won't have as many, because the big fish keep eating the small ones. Likewise, places with great access are going to have high fishing pressure, because that's how it works-people go fishing where they can.
About the only real measure is water quality, but above a certain level (that nearly all lakes in America meet) it has no bearing on how good the fishing is. You can pull just as many big fish out of muddy rivers as you can from crystal clear water. As long as there is enough food, the fish will get big.

So his criteria are ultimately subject to his opinion no matter what. He can cherry pick what he wants and shit all over everyone else.
That's why I say it's bullshit, because it is.
>>
>>1058798
No doubt that's a good idea, but my goal is to get a multi-pounder on a fly, and overall just improve my fly skills.
>>
>>1058796
I don't know if there is even a decent way to tell if there is. I suppose once you get above a certain level-and most large, healthy lakes will get there-it's all just "world class" and whichever one you choose from that list, you'll be right.

use a bigger streamer. given that you were catching sunnies i imagine your bugger couldnt have been bigger than a size 6
and while bass will occasionally hit smaller baits, they much prefer a large one, it makes the energy expended chasing it much more worth while for them, and that makes them much more likely to eat.
>>1058801
another good idea is try different stripping patterns. try some really fast agressive strips, or try some really long slow strips, or a hard fast strip and a pause. really move a lot of water with your fly.
>>
>>1058810
I'll try a bigger fly next time, i have a lot of luck on this small clouser minnow that has gotten me plenty of dink smallies. And I did a lot of different patterns. Sometimes letting it sink, sometimes just pulling it back in. Thanks

>His criteria compete against each other

It's almost like life is full of compromises or something. The most well rounded lake (i.e. Best lake to catch numbers of big bass with) should be considered the best. I would definitely think a lake that averages 5lb fish is better than one that produced a monster 10 years ago. Best =/= biggest fish ever caught.

>Water quality
Has a lot more meaning than muddy or clear. Just cause the water is clean doesn't mean it's the best for making big fish.

>So his criteria are ultimately subject to his opinion no matter what.

"Best" is subjective for a lot of things. What you define as best may be different than mine. It's a lot like asking what's the best trail, national park, or mountain. Or the best golf course. Or the best race track.

honestly, just go buy some tiny jigheads (1/80th oz) on good hooks, they are a little pricey but worth it, and some tiny little soft plastics. a drop of super glue on the shank and that soft plastic will go exactly no where. its cheating but it counts as fly fishing

Tequila Sunrise and Black w/ Blue Fleck are the only power worm colors you need.
Black w/ blue is good for muddy water and lower light conditions like if it's really overcast, and tequila sunrise for everything else. In the winter I find tequila sunrise to be the go to color regardless of condition.
I wouldn't throw power worms at all in the summer since I have much more confidence in straight tails during this time of year.

You can definitely use the curado in salt water but it will still need to be cleaned if you want it to last. I couldn't tell you about the rod, I don't even know what you are fishing for and with what bait.
>>
>>1059208
Probably just going to use some thawed out shrimp or squid strips.
I guess if I rig it up with one of those heavy pyramid sinkers then a MH rod would be good.

My Citica has a piece of sand or something in it from the last time I fished salt with it, but it seems to be fine otherwise. I should really take apart the reel and fix that lol.

The Curado is a better reel tho.
>>
>>1059214
If I was going to use the reel strictly for freshwater should I get a 13 Inception or a Citica?
I can always get the new Curado next spring and move my reels around.
>>
>>1059215
I don't know. I don't have an inception. The Citica is a solid reel though.
>>
>>1059210

If you are talking about a MH bass rod rated up to about 1 ounce lure weight than you definitely want to be careful about going over that.

Take people fishing for a living like me anon. I'm a charter mate in the Chesapeake and make around a hundred a day to take people out for rockfish and talk about the outdoors.
>>
>>1059256

Before or after taxes? And how many hours a day?

Just curious. I just always wondered what the charter is business is like.

>lures have to look realistic to catch fish
Because bass are known heavy beer drinkers?
I've caught multiple fish on these joke lures. And on multiple occasions.

Sometimes shit just works.
>>
>>1059262

Not that anon but I find it stupid that companies try to make hollow body frog lures look like something else to garner attention and a potentially higher price. Not because of realism.
>>
>>1059262

I understand that. Pube flies, dildo lures, and spoons are all running jokes in this general.

It's just that a relialistically frog colored realistically duck shaped lure is just so arbitrary and specific at the same time. By referencing Lewis Carol's work, I was suggesting that I am acknowledging absurdity of the joke.
>>
>>1059266
So you're saying we, not the fish, are the ones being truly baited
>>
>>1059267
Spoons are no joke, anon.

I'm just a mate and im under the table. I get tips usually 50-$100 from the people and paid 20 from captain so no matter what even if someone cheap skates and gives no tips I get something. We are very successful and limit almost every day which takes between 5-8 hours with 2-3 of those being traveling then rest fishing. All depends though the captain is my godfather and has been on the bay since he was 5 since his dad charters and I'm in line to inherit the boat and business when he passes. So it really all boils down to how well you know the fish, the area, and how well you care for customers. At the end of the day though it's worth it for me since the good days outnumber the days people skimp on tips.

Next meme lure is going to be shit that doesn't exist. A "catfish" swimbait: generic body of a fish, but it has a house cat's head.
>>
>>1059296
they are going to make a pike swimbait that is 20 inches long and can only be fished by trolling it because it weighs 3 pounds

either that or a snake
>>
>>1059293
And I forgot to say the captain only does this part time since he has other work he does. So we only do roughly 100 charters a year so we aren't really big scale. Next year he is retiring and going full time on the charter so we will have more trips so ill make more and once full time I'll make 15% of the charter fee so $60 on a normal trip plus tips. Once you go big time though like Marlin and tuna the charter fees go up and the mates need to do more so they make $100-150ish from captain and close to that or more in tips since they have a more affluent customer base where as for rocks it's normally guys with family or their buds looking for a good time on the water. So thats another factor I'm currently in school so this is a summer gig for me and pays better than most other options plus I love what I do. After school I'm planning to go to the big leagues as a captain with my godfather as a co owner and mentor since that's where thats where the real big money in charter is but a bigger up start for boat and gear.

Btw Dick's also has some good shit on the Flash Sale today. A little over 2hrs left. They had Sedonas for like $39. Hopefully the good sizes aren't sold out if anybody is thinkin about it.
