Anyone have any experience with the Daiwa Regal BRI? I'll mostly be targeting catfish in the 10 to 30 pound range with the occasional trip to the coast for redfish and black drum.

I finally came up to this very shady part of the river and started catching smallies. Plenty of commotion on the top water this whole shady stretch. I think the smallies consider shady stretches like a feeding ground, no matter what depth it is, was in like 2 feet of water.

They all ate the zoom u-tail. And this was the best one.

solid reel esp for the price, from what i hear. drag is pretty quiet but everyone puts up bells on their shit anyway.

where you planning on ordering from? i might spend an extra $8 and support a local shop here vs amazon

I'm more concerned about the reliability of the bait clicker feature more than anything as I do a lot of drift fishing in my kayak.

Using my Amazon credit.

I buy all the rest of my gear (mostly terminal tackle) from an old man 5 minutes down the road who orders stuff wholesale and has like a mini-garage sale every weekend with a shitload of selection that's half the price of anything I see in stores or online.

Going to fish from around 8-9:30 tomorrow morning. What should I use? Is that early enough for some top water action on a Rebel Pop-R?
>>
>>1062387
It's never too late as long as you're fishing somewhere with shade. High noon and smallies were surfacing today on the river.

It's not a means of too late but rather "too sunny"
>>
>>1062387

Sunrise is and sunset are best for topwater as the darkness forces the fish to just strike the lure on the off chance that it's food rather than be able to scrutinize it.
>>
>>1062390
>>1062392
Alright in that case I'll just toss a square bill. I feel like that's too early in the morning to use soft plastics since it isn't hot enough for them to get lethargic.

The dinks in my area love to go after this thing. I've caught several fish on them including a literal THREE OUNCE largemouth, but the success rate is poor. Most of the time the bluegill that I target will take jabs at it but they'll miss the hooks entirely. And when they do get hooked I usually lose them half the time before I can pull them out of the water. Should I go up a size and see if it helps?
>>
>>1062397
Like a ring fry? Pretty sure they make a bubble trail if you jerk them.
>>
>>1062398
>The dinks in my area love to go after this thing
agree.
They're missing because they have small mouths and sort of just "kiss" the lure. They probably dont even intend on eating it actually. It's their way of checking out what something is. (not fact just my perspective)
Floating rapalas are great. But if you're looking to get dinks on topwater consistently that shouldnt be you're lure.
Id focus on flies for topwater sunnies. There's no real alternative since you need something small and still weightless to keep it on top
>>
Well the problem with having it be extremely light is that I can't cast it without my line getting wrapped loose around the spool and eventually tangling into a mess. I'm using a Daiwa Revros 2000 panfish reel on a Fenwick Eagle ultra-lite with 6lb line and even the Rapala I posted is too light for it without causing problems.

Some fat middle aged creep walked up behind me today (I was in a secluded spot too) and he just started complaining about some "niggers" that were fooling around in their car back in the parking lot of the area I was at. Then he called the police after I shrugged my way through the conversation and I had to pack up and leave before I got caught up in his bullshit. He literally said on the phone to the cops "yeah I'm with my buddy here and *blablablabla*" as if to imply that we were somehow friends. I coudn't have ran out of the place faster. The cops showed up right as I pulled out so I barely avoiding being questioned.

>>1062456
It's not about the size.

I fish smallies because of the setting and style of fishing. Personally like wading around and exploring rivers. Smallies just happen to be the best fish that populate the waters and take lures. (Big carp around but meh they're a pain to fish)

Smallies are simply a trout+lmb if they had a baby. They live in trout conditions but can handle still water like lmb. And it's suitable for my area where wild trout aren't as prominent. Bet your ass if I lived just a bit north I'll already be a fly fishing expert.

How Should i spend 200 on a spinning reel or memecaster? I fish mostly open water for bass with powerbait powerworms and a sinker, im not even sure if i should upgrade my spinner right now is a mid range daiwa that was around 100
>>
>>1062476
Spend it on a high end rod. A St. Croix Triumph is a good starting place to look. They have ridiculous sensitivity which you need for those sinker rigs.
>>
>>1062478
If he's going for bass he should look at their Bass X line. Same blanks and reel seats, but they come on more bass oriented options in terms of length and power.
>>
top water fishing is GOAT.

>visually seeing the strike

>>
>can't decide between a 7'1" and 7'3" for a Heavy power rod
Mostly for frogging and some punching if that helps.
I have a 7'6" MH for pitching, so I'm not too worried about having a long heavy rod.
>>
>>1062421
I was mostly joking I just really like tossing around t-rigs. Other stuff can definitely produce better.

But if I was gonna throw one instead of a moving bait, I would up the weight, and bounce it as soon as it hits the ground.

>>1062476
A $100 spinning reel is a nice reel. Right at the point of diminishing returns (for freshwater) imo.

Get a memecaster if you want to try something new, or upgrade your rod like the other anon said.

>drop rig right over the side of the boat
>wait
>if no bites in 10 mins drift down 50 or so feet while staying in the same depth range
>once you start catching them either mark it with a waypoint or toss the anchor

The hardest part is the drifting untill you get on them. In the lake near me there are millions of them so it usually doesn't take long. Once you find them though you gotta stay in that exact spot. Also another thing is sometimes you will start catching them but a majority of them will be dinks. When that happens I treat the situation the same way as if I wasn't catching anything and keep drifting untill you start catching eater sized ones.

Peacocks are great. But you get a handful of lazy largemouths on certain days. You can reel them in 75% of the way and they will finally start fighting when you get them 15' from shore.

And that kid, I always thought it was dude's kid. Only later did I find out it was his crazy ex gf's kid. And he finally got away from her and has been with a new girl, but found out the crazy old girl had a baby so now he's gonna be paying that child support

>going to pick up dude one day to go fishin
>pullin up to his apartment, try to call and he isn't answering his phone
>see his car with trunk popped open and all of his shit scattered around the parking lot
>looks like dude owed somebody money and they ripped him out of his car as he was coming home or some shit

I don't have much else besides carp/sunfish/catfish/largemouth/crappie around. Bigger LMB are fun to catch though, e
specially on a flyrod.

But yea, I mean that was a bigass sunfish. I might really try for trophy sunfish/bluegill lol - that one was already huge. I tried casting into some carp but the line dropped within 9ft of their vision and they shit themselves/dashed off. Fuckers.

>fuckin carp have a 4 month photographic memory

UK-dudes, I am an American fly fisherman so about as far away in style to UK carp fishing as can be but I still cannot watching Nash videos. For some reason those guys are entertaining and the style of fishing looks comfy...literally, seeing as they bring tents, cots, beds, etc. to the bank with them.

I'm sure the OI BRUV TIME FOR FISHIN IN IT stuff might be a turnoff to UK folks but since I am American it's just funny/fun seeinglike BIG UOS DRUM N BASS MASSIVE dudes that are very passionate (and good), well spoken fishermen (not to mention businessmen).

Are any of you guys carp fishermen in this UK style?

https://youtu.be/xzj6MusXedw

Maybe it's so interesting just because it's so different from what I do or anyone else around here. It's no even that I want to do it the much, just neat that it exists.

Trout
Tasty as fuck and there's a world of help and literature out there for you to learn from.
Say you want to fly fish for trout at any fly shop and there will be knowing nods and the whole shop will be open to you.

One caveat: Avoid "dry fly only" fags like the fucking plague. They are the original cancerous fly fishing faggots, and hell is too good for them.

Kek. I actually stopped yesterday for like half an hour and got a couple dinks and lost a nice one. I think I was right on the edge of a pressure front.

And I was actually just at a lake, one of those little clear water ones where 10% of the time it's great and the other 90% of the time, skunked. Now I'm heading over to girl's work so we can go pick up this rental car for our little road trip tomorrow.

Strange shit at this lake, there was light rain on and off and just about dusk. Calm surface, and then every 5min or so, a group of fish would start jumping. Looked like they were small-med LMB, but they would all start jumping together in a group for about 15 seconds, then stop for a bit. Reminded me of those Asian carp videos except it was a group of maybe half a dozen fish and they would pop up in one place, jump a bunch, calm down, and then a few min later do the same thing again like 50' away from the previous spot.

Any idea? I have seen carp breeding before when they flop in the grass, but these fish were way out in open water each time and a big group of them.
>>
>>1063127
If that lake has shad in it the bass could've been feeding on them. When the lakes get warm shad tend to stay near the top of the water column. If you see it again try throwing a spook or something.

After I feel a bite I usually wait for the line to move a little bit then set the hook after i see movement. Even if I end up pulling the lure out of the bass' mouth the first time I can usually pitch it back to where I got bit and make him commit. Haven't had a gut hooked fish with EWG in a long time. The only recent one I can think of was with a wacky rig hook, but I got it out alright.

If you can see the barb of the hook cut the like and pull the hook out backwards so the barb isn't catching on everything coming out

Coho are supposed to average around 8 pounds. That doesn't seem super heavy.
Kings average around 20 and the lunkers get significantly heavier, and that's what you need a really beefy rod for.
We have invasive pike, but I heard they don't get very big compared to the monster pike people usually talk about.
I might just have to ask around Basspro about rods, but what about reels?

I've been pointed towards Ugly Stiks (GX2) and the Daiwa BG reels. Would a 2500 fit most applications or would I need a beefier reel for bigger fish? I only plan on fishing from the bank.

I don't know squat about fishing. Every time I've gone, my dad or whoever was hosting me did everything for me. Now I'm looking to get out on my own.

I've read the pastebin, but I guess I still don't understand what makes a good rod and reel good.
>>
>>1063557
basically, what makes a good rod good, is relative light weight, good sensativity, and good strength. if your rod is undestructible but not sensative in the least, and weighs a ton (uglystik) it isnt good. if it weighs nothing but breaks the instant you use it, its not good (most shakespeare that isnt an uglystik)
if its sensative, and strong, but weighs a fuck ton, its not bad, but its not great. in order of priority, i'd say it goes strong, sensative, light. you'll catch more with an uglystik than a $12 shakespeare just because if you only feel 1/3 of the bites, but the rod survives any fish you throw at it, you will catch more fish than if you feel every bite but your rod breaks on the first fish. then if your rod is heavy, but you feel everything, and it doesnt break, its worth using. at least for a while.
>>
>>1063561

>>
>>1063569
You on the river bank or do you have a boat?
>>
>>1063562
Not really. Almost all good rods will be strong and have good sensitivity. The autism kicks in with the weight factor. Rods will be significantly more expensive for being a few ounces lighter. Same thing aplies to reels. Good brands include but isn't limited to: Abu Garcia, st.croix, fenwick, Shimano, castaway, diawa, dobyns, and okuma to name a few off the top of my head

Were you in the middle of spooling or do you just like to run it low?

>>1063809
I really really like my dobyns fury. I got a heavy and its still super sensitive.

>>1063938
It happens. Just gotta hope for the best. Are you relatively new to fishing t rigs? I know it happened a lot more to me when I first started, that's why I'm asking.

>>1063942
The other one is hoping he drops whatever he just ate for an easy meal.
>>
>>1063942
I've seen a smallie try and pull the lure out of the hooked smallie's mouth.
>>
>>1063955
Im kind of new to t-rigs, i've been fishing them near full-time the last two trips. And as you may figured out, got a bass gut hooked each time. Plenty of good hookups before and after. Like I said I'll probably just stop waiting for them to take it. They normally go back after ot if you just take it out of their mouth quickly without a fight. And as I said I figure the important, big, ones have big enough mouths to gulp it in one go.
>>
>>1063928
donno. going based off what was said in a review
>>
>>1063955
I like to run my reels low. I find that I cast easier, and seeing as this is a pitching set up I'm not worried about running out of line.
Is your fury a regular heavy or a mag heavy? I was considering the 7'3" regular heavy.
>>
>>1063972
Kewl man. I couldn't do it cause it bothers my autism too much.

And the fury rod is just a 7' 1" heavy. I use it for jigs/heavy t-rigs, and chatterbait/spinnerbaits over grass.

Woodward has fish. Whenever I go camping there I have the luck of staying next to russians/slavs and they always catch a ton of carp. They swim out like 500 feet and drop a ball of bait down first. They use those long rods the 12ft ones. Big motherfucking fish too. They do catch and release tho. Sometimes if I ask they'll give me one or two to fry.

That reel is awesome. When my father in law passed, the wife and I went to NC and the mother in law gave all hid old surf fishing gear.

One of the reels was a Shimano IX that had been in storage for years after being used semi regularly for surf fishing even longer.

Thing worked fine and I'm still using it for freshwater catfishing and surf/pier fishing. It's solid as hell for a 15 dollar rod. The rear drag also let's it be a kind of ghetto baitrunner. I've caught everything from stocked trout to small sharks on it.

I actually recommend the reel all the time in these threads.

The rod I have no experience with.
>>
>>1064037

Favorite budget reel. Couldn't tell you about the rod but it should work fine.

There are tons of lady fish in the gulf and they are usually in large schools so you can typically catch a few of them. They do a ton of jumps as other people have said and shake their head hard when they are out of the water so if you aren't experienced they will almost always throw your lure.

They also make the best cut bait imo because they're greasy and their scaled are small and come off very easily so it makes a nice chum line.

>>
Sold off all my fishing gear about 18 months ago. I used to have a bunch of specialized shit but now I just want to set up a soft plastic rod and reel.

Do I need to spend $100 for a reel and another $100 on the rod? BPS has an Abu Garcia SilverMaxx for $60. Is there any reason I should avoid that?
>>
so basically all fishing reels are made by one company?
>>
>>1064243
It casts like shit and has bad drag.
Just spend the extra $20 and get a Shimano Caenan from Cabela's website. IIRC Red enjoys his, and it's that's the lowest you're going to find a reel with centrifugal breaks and decent drag.
And you can get link related really cheap now, and it performs on the same level as $100 rods

what's wrong with the lures? they catch fish and they have a good design where the hook releases away from the body of the lure. Would other lures catch fish just as well for cheaper? probably. pike hit just about anything. i like seeing them hit a rat or duck lure on top water though

>>

They can be picky as fuck mate. And very sensitive to changes in pressure due to their inability to easily regulate their swimbladder like most other fish.
>>
>>1064257
So the temp doesn't change the fishing that much? I could have swore I've heard that before. I can't go now cause I gotta work soon. But I might go tomorrow. The heat warning is in effect until Saturday...

Temps does change fish willingness to bit.
It takes a lot longer for a body of water to heat up than it does air though. One day of extreme heat/cold does not change water temp much (disregarding small ponds ofc.)

>>
>>1064250
Jonboat.
V hull has more draft and thus more drag.
If you have a million little places that are shallow, a jonboat works magnificently. They're NOT for big water, but you can float over a sandbar that's 4 inches below the surface and won't run aground. You learn to love them for that kind of shit.
>>
>>1064255
Dress for hot weather, bring lots of water, ONE bottle of Powerade, and fish deep.
They CAN be caught now, and you'll probably have the lake to yourself given the heat, but they're going to be hiding in holes, shady spots and near cold creeks. Anything for them to stay closer to their ideal water temp. If you can do that, you'll catch fish.
>>
>>1064288
i bet a cobia would crush that big one
>>
>>1064259
WATER temp can affect things drastically, but most decently-sized lakes don't get lots warmer just because it's hot for a few days. If anything the bass might be 1-2 feet deeper than they usually are this time of year, but that's it.

Bass like a water temperature of 70 degrees best. Once you find where that is, look for structure at that depth and start fishing.
>>
>>1064300
Thanks, I might try it tomorrow. Just get out early before it gets too crippling.

I don't really like fishing on bottom and it's probably a little harder to from a kayak, but I might try. And I don't know about having it to myself. With it being friday, I'd say people will be there swimming or boating...which is annoying.
>>
>>1064305
I'm having problems finding the temp of the water though. That's what sucks. Last time I went I put my hand down in and it felt pretty warm.
>>
>>1064270
Gather water temp data for yourself.

Go to HD/Lowe's or a pool store and get a cheapass sinking pool thermometer. Then buy some cheap and thin poly rope and tie one end to the thermometer, the other to a bigass float and then take a sharpie and mark the rope every foot. Tie the rope off at the depth you want to measure and go from there.

This is neither hard nor expensive.
>>
>>1064310
The top foot will ALWAYS be warm. Think about it-hot water rises.
About 18 inches down it will be noticeably cooler, and then down below 10 feet it starts really dropping down to average groundwater temp.
>>
>>1064311
Thanks that sounds pretty cheap and easy

>>1064312
I hadn't thought about that. I guess thats why they give surface temps? So I probably won't have to fish on bottom, just a little deep.

If only a device which could tell you the temperature of something existed... sadly such technology is only available to military weather stations...
Or this >>1064311

>>1064312
>>Think about it-hot water rises.
The reason for the topwater being warmer has nothing to do with that. It is just because the heat source (the fucking sun) is closer and the majority of the energy gets absorbed here... people seem to severely overestimate the 'hot XX rises!' meme compared to other effects...

Their lures do work

>>1063984
Nah I have 17lb flouro on it, but I think it would be a solid frogging rod otherwise

>>1064246
No, most fishing reel companies are owned by bigger companies. They're still made by Shimano, Abu, ect. The companies can and do share factories for some reels tho.
>>
>>1064314
Exactly.
Another thing to remember is that you don't have to get exactly to the depth of the bass to catch them. Bass will rise a little to take a bait if they think it's worth it; they are used to ambushing their prey from below. Most of the fish they eat likes water a little warmer-and thus shallower-than they do, while the bass lurk under them.
>>
>>1064319
Does frogging really need 65lb braid? I was thinking about running it with 40lb braid so I can also use it for swim jigs and light swim baits, so getting the extra yards on the spool might be nice.
>>
>>1064326
No, I run 40lb on my froggin stick. I won't go any higher until I get my boat running. The higher test is nice cause you can pin the bass to cover and move the boat to it. If you're from shore and you pin a bass you're kinda stuck until the bass frees gets unhooked, unpinned, or the line breaks.

Even 40lb is more than enough for almost any situation bassin, boat or not.
>>
>>1064328
Alright nice.
I just noticed that Dobyn's rates their lure weights rather low. Is this just being conservative, or should I actually consider getting a mag heavy since I intend on throwing stuff over 1oz in addition to 5/8oz frogs?
>>
>>1062466

You mean "The laws of Physics"?

Yes, I put great stock in the laws of Physics, anon.
They've never let me down, except when they told me they would.

But like you imply, it's not the whole story.
You're correct, the shallower water IS the also first water the sun hits, so it generally warms up first and most. But even in places where the warming doesn't happen from the sun-like, say a stream from a hot spring meeting a colder lake-the warmer water will rise to top when the two meet. On the flip side, there is also mixing due to wind and currents stirring up the lake, so water down below does get warmed up too.

But for a quick and dirty explanation that holds true for most situations, it works and I stand by it.

>>
>>1064350

>>1064329
If you're just throwing heavier lures with it I don't see a reason to not get the mag heavy. I'm fairly confident that the heavy would handle above 1oz, but id be gentle when casting.

Depends on local laws and/or rules at the individual beaches. If they care, then do as they say you have to do; if they don't, then go nuts.
And if you're rich enough to own beachfront property then no one cares at all, as long as it's on your land. But if that's the case, why would you be asking on 4chan?

The organization at my local Dick's is crap. The whole zoom plastic section was mix-matched all over the place. Not only that but they only had two colors of the U-tale worms. I happened to pick one up in motor oil with a chartreuse tip. I was aiming for a pumpkin-chart however, and I found this color only in a trick worm form.
I was still happy since it beat buying them online with shipping rates, and at the store they offered a third bag free if I got two.

Anyways questions for yall. Is there a difference in u-tales and trick worms I should keep in mind? Is it ok to trim the worm down in length so it's not so bulky?
