Just bought an entry level metal detector. Sounds like a fun little hobby.

Anyone have any experience? Tips for a beginner?

I picked it up at Canadian Tire. Should be able to get them at any kind of outdoor recreation store though. Would have ordered a better brand online but I didn't want to wait and this one was on sale.

Got it for $150 plus tax

I just started detecting last fall. It's a fun hobby and I've found some weird shit already.

Within the first half hour of detecting on my own property I found a silver dime. I've found old sprockets, nails, and other weird bits of metal in the woods. But that dime is the coolest thing for sure.

Soflo fag here. One of my neighbors in the keys would take a fancy water proof one to the local sand bar after big weekends and he finds tons of stuff drunk college kids drop. His best find i know of was an engagement ring

Nice!
I thought of you a couple months back. Someone was selling one of my favorite Radio Shack detectors in new condition on ebay for $9 with free shipping. I snapped it up but wondered if you would bid against me. Nobody ever did though.
>>
>>1059656
Sadly I live innacity now so it wouldn't be worth it anymore to have one. Back in my old place it would have been great.
>>
>>1059658
that sucks. I used to make decent money shooting coins and jewelry in city parks though. Not sure if that's still allowed most places.
>>
>>1059663
Nah I wouldn't be able to dig in the parks. At the beach probably though.

the back is marked "Micronta 63-3003"

it comes in either Radio Shack or Micronta brand, both are the same except for the word on the front. It is the VLF detector shown here:

Ive been thinking about metal detecting the beaches in florida around St. Augustine, but from what I hear Florida is actually pretty bad for metal detecting, are there any guys that know anything about it? I can find any actual laws about it, other than a million little local ordinances, or faggots who own the beach in front of their house.
>>
>>1060291
Problem with Florida is the beaches are massive. There's probably some good jewelry and some boring spare change, but you'd have to cover huge areas to get it.

It's good for finding Spanish treasure after hurricanes, but that's mostly on the Gulf Coast. The Atlantic side has produced a fair amount of silver coins, but not nearly as many as the side where the treasure fleet sank. Also depends if your beach is natural or manmade. Most of Florida's beaches now import dredged sand, which has essentially nothing in it.

Thanks anon. Fwiw I consistently see quite a few on goodwill auctions too for anyone looking. I just don't have any recent experience to know the best bang for buck used models.

I managed to find a gold ring with a grain of sand little diamond in the center but nothing else really. Some silver quarters of the early 60s or maybe a wheat dime.

I've been doing this for about a year and its fun for the most part. But I've only done parks.

After watching The Detectorists I thought about how cool it would be to do this (I'm sure lots of viewers did too).
>>
i got a metal detector when i was a kid and i still use it from time to time.

ive found better shit scanning the beach with my eyes while metal detecting than i have from actually detecting/digging. ive found multiple pocket knives, some rings, etc. just looking around but with the detector i think the best thing ive ever found was a working zippo. mostly foil, nails... some small change along paths
>>
Serious detector guys looks like fucking dorks when they lug around multiple shovels, bags, vests, and pin-pointers

Gimmie a break. You dont need to be THAT suited up.

Obviously they don't give a flying fuck what you think. Who the fuck are you the fashion police? How exhausting it must be to imagine a collective normie dress code standard and ensuring you are always in compliance with it. You are everything that is wrong in this world.

Advice on gear that works has little to do with worrying how others perceive you when you look a certain way. put less effort in that and more in building your confidence you might even get laid instead of just reading about it.
>>
>>1061521
Me and all the guys I know carry a detector and a shovel and not much else. Even then I usually set the shovel down somewhere and just carry the detector.

I'm a serious detector guy, I do it more than 40 hours most weeks. When I see someone packing around tons of gear I assume they're new.

Metal detecting seems like such an un-rewarding hobby to me, walking back and forth swinging a device, and 99 times out of 100 finding coins or nails or screws or something.
>>

>>>/r9k/
>>

>hoping others would elaborate on the appeal.
I do it because my wife thinks I've quit smoking and drinking. So I go out in the woods and chug down whiskey from the flask while puffing Marlboros and come home smelling of bug spray.

the appeal is something to do in the woods if you're very bored and don't like danger or speed. It's very mellow, very private, and very relaxing. Sometimes you find something cool, but mostly you talk to other detectorists and random passers by who inevitably want to know if you're "finding anything." You see strange animals, you take interesting pictures. You repeatedly come close to being struck by lightning. And sometimes you find something cool.

I was detecting an old burned down cabin. (This is common where I live, most of the old cabins have been burned by vandals). I found an old box spring from a child's bed. (also not rare, kid's mattresses are common finds). On the ground next to the mattress was a bit of a porcelain dolls face. (Doll parts are also common finds). The strange part was that this doll's face was burned and in the cabin, meaning it wasn't broken and thrown away- it was in the house when it burnt down. Right next to the kid's bed.

It made me curious so I went online to a database of local newspapers and searched fires where children died. Sure enough, in 1906 a cabin at that address burnt to the ground. The family escaped except for one 8 year old little girl who burned to death in her bed.

I have her dolly somewhere in my office, but I think my cat might have run off with it. He's a furry little dick like that.

It tells stories about the people that used it. Interesting stuff sometimes.

Like how pocket watches in the 1880's were as ubiquitous and popular as cell phones are today. And how every man carried a match case- if they smoked it was full of matches and if they didn't it was full of calling cards. How men and women wore corsets, even in the wild west. How popular shooting was, and which pistols and calibers were common. I know that miners back in the day commonly carried detonators around in their pockets, and that smoking pipes was very popular. I know what types of jewelry were worn by both men and women. I know that fraternal organizations operates as both insurance companies and labor unions back then- most men belonged to one. I know plastic combs were popular in the 1800's, something I wouldn't have expected. I know people had alarm clocks even when they didn't have indoor plumbing or electricity.

I just like what old trash says about the lives of people at the time. What it was like to live in a cabin in the woods of Colorado during the gold rush days. And these are my people too, my family moved here at that time. So I learn what it was like for them to live here, then. And it was interesting. In a lot of ways very different from my life now, but in other rather mundane ways it was quite similar.

I had another one like that when I was a kid. My uncle had an old building on his property that used to be a whorehouse in the 1800's and early 1900's. I had heard about people hiding stuff under doorway floorboards, and he gave me permission to pull up the boards at the front of his building. Underneath we found a pile of whiskey bottles, some with dates of 1914 on them. We figured they were hidden during prohibition. A lot of them still had whiskey in them. In all we pulled out about 20 bottles from under those boards. As we were pulling the last bottles out my head started spinning and I felt like I was having a seizure. I felt like there was something else there.

I ran my fingers through the dust and found a pile of tiny bones. I had a feeling this wasn't somebody's pet cat or something. My uncle called the cops and they took the skeleton away. It turned out to be a human baby, probably from one of the prostitutes that lived and worked there.

Death was common enough back then, but it's still a bit creepy to encounter signs of it.
