another tip if you're attaching it to a loop in your main line you don't do it the same way

you put the main line loop through the leader loop and then pass the hook through the main line loop

I should've bought some flies when I ordered, but I was worried I'd end up spending way too much money on them. I'll try to find a shop that has flies next time I'm there and ask them what's working.

>>1049601
I've only been a handful of times to Galveston and Mustang Island/Corpus.

I can't honestly comment on the fishing because I'm not very good at finding saltwater fish. The only time I've caught a species I was after is in a kayak in canals at night. I prefer farther south to Galveston purely because of how much nicer the water can be.

Port A, Rock Port, and Matagorda seem the be the most popular places for fishing from what people say. I'm trying out some places on this map next time I'm down.

Should I try poppers or will they only hit those at low daylight?
>>
>>1049622
Depends entirely on where you are.

There are 2 ponds I fish, that are about the same size and separated by less than 50 feet. Bass will hit poppers 24/7/365 on one but the bass in the other will only hit poppers within an hour of sunup or sundown.

Then there's a third pond on the same property about 600 yards away where the bass have never once hit a popper but will assassinate Sneaky Petes.

A sneaky pete is basically a popper with the popper body reversed. They dive a little and gurgle instead of make a big pop.

I surf/pier/jetty fish East and West Matagorda Bay and usually do Prettt well.

I stay in Port Lavaca or Matagorda, but my favorite town is Indianola. Lots of places to fish and camp and an awesome little fishing pier. They're in the process of making the big lake next to into a state park too.

I haven't taken my kayak out there yet, but I can't wait to access the flats and reefs.
>>
>>1049408
What is /out/'s opinion on trotlines? I'm more interested in eating fresh, tasty fish that I caught myself than the "sport" of fishing (could not possibly give less of a shit about the latter aspect.) Would learning to run trotlines be the best thing for me?
>>
>>1049656
Over here in the Chesapeake bay I use them for crab all the time, sure it's not fish but the same metrics should apply, it's way faster than going by hand/line and it only occupies you for a day unlike traps/pots that you have to check daily for several weeks, the bottom line is if you want a lot of fish in a short amount of time it's the way to go.

Running one isn't exactly rocket science, get a thick rope, tie on droppers with hooks, bait hooks, check line, that's about as hard as it gets, the only difficult part is storing the thing without getting the hooks tangled.
>>
>>1049638
>>1049638
>but my favorite town is Indianola

My nigga. My ashes will be spread in Powderhorn bay.
>>
>>1049656

I personally dislike them because it's harder to prevent wasteful gut hooking, bycatch, and tangles/lost gear compared to actual fishing- which also has its fair share of gut hooking, bycatch, and tangled/lost gear.

If you want some fresh caught fish, ask anyone you know who fishes and I garauntee they'll give you some/all of what they catch on their next trip for free. They might even clean them for you.

I can catch enough catfish to eat on for a couple weeks in one afternoon. After that, I either catch and release or give some to family, friends, and coworkers.

with the eyes like that its going to ride hook down
you want the eyes on the bottom of the fly, so if you want it to ride hook point up, you want the eyes opposite the hook point

Fugg that makes sense. Probably would've figured that out if I wasn't intoxicated.

Tbh I never really intend to fish most of the flies I tie. I buy flies if I actually want to catch fish. I think just tying something and seeing how it turns out is fun af even if it looks retarded.

I don't get what happens when you hook an undersized fish,or a out-of-season one, etc. With proper fishing you can select what you take.

It kills man. Variant of the Thunder Creek Minnow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDQX2HjRYUA) and then I add a Fish-Mask (#4 size) with the Fish Skull Living Eyes (Wind).

It actually works too well. Fish murder it (from big bluegill/crappie to bass) and after 4-5 catches the deer hair gets finnicky. Drying it out/bit of dubbing wax can 'reform' it

Thanks. The craw works well - looks great in the water. They're kinda a pain to tie and take like 30mins but can't wait to try them out in a real river. Ironically enough the best performing of those flies.....is the #6size flashy olive bugger (using gold UTC wire wrap around chenille). Tho it is a bugger....that's like the flyfisher's roboWorm haha.

>>1049959
That twisting the thread counterclockwise thing helped a bunch
>>
>>1049960
probably some foam, clousers look really good tied with 3/0 white thread, so consider some of that, stainless steel saltwater hooks are not a terible idea either. oh and rubber legs. but ultimately, look up some patterns you want to tie and buy the materials to tie them.
>>
>>1049960
If you have a female significant other or family member, steal their disposable flipflops that come from their mani/pedi salon.

Great closed-cell foam for making flies.
>>
>>1049960

Depends on what you're going for. For the Thunder creek Minnow I use: Pearl flash, green and white bucktail, Fish Masks #3 & Living Eyes, #6 Daiichi streamer (straight eye or down either one) hooks, and 3/0 white thread.

You can't go wrong with getting Wooly Bugger stuff either. Gold UTC wire, 5/32 beadheads, Wapsi olive marabou, olive chenille, and olive saddle hackle (Whiting farms if you can). If you're going for bass with buggers keep the tail marabou kinda long. Don't use more than 4 strings of pearl flash in the tail either or it sticks together. You can either use 4 small ones or just do 2 long ones and do a wrap-tie to make them '4' when folded back. Thanks for the kudos as well
>>
>>1049970

Oh and of course clear head cement to put the Mask on. Actually I use a lot of clear head cement.
>>
>>1049962
>>1049966
I've got a shit ton of craft foam I used to make panfish poppers. I also have some rubber legs (same stuff as skirt material which I have an absolute ass load of).

>>1049970
>Gold UTC wire, 5/32 beadheads, Wapsi olive marabou, olive chenille, and olive saddle hackle
Awesome. What size hook do I need for saltwater/bass? I was watching videos last night and 1/0 seemed to be popular.

>>1049972
I just use regular thin C/A. Is actual fly tying cement better?
>>
Should i buy a baitcast or fly rod. i have no experience with either of them.
>>
>>1049977

My favorite bugger video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ku1-lnkKzI&t=157s

I forgot to mention get some lead/weighted wire size .020 for buggers. Honestly a size #6 Mustad or Daiichii hook works really well for bass. Just big enough to weed out the dinks while small enough to be versatile for many different ties. I've made some massive #4 buggers but for some reason bass/panfish just love #6s. Even large ones.

For Clousers though you can go to like a size #4 streamer hook. Fly tying cement is thinner and clearer.
>>
>>1049980

It depends on how you want to fish and what you like fishing for desu. I baitcast when I'm going for catfish but otherwise use a fly rod for most everything else. Fly rod size depends on where you are going to be fishing at - lakes you want a 9ft 6wt or 9ft 7wt rod but if streams/rivers you could make do with a 7.5ft 5wt or so.

To learn how to fly fish watch a shitload of videos starting with basic overhead casting. Pay attention to the snap of the wrist and motion of the fly loop. You may want to check a local fly shop/outdoors shop (that has tying materials/hand tied stuff from guy there) too and see if they have classes on casting and basic tying. I prefer fly-fishing because I will always catch something on some pattern (with the same rod mostly)
>>
>>1049981

Also: I always tie in some body flash of some kind with my chenille when tying buggers. Either tying in gold UTC wire to wrap around chenille after I bring it forward or Pearl/Gold flash wrapped tight.

If you're creek fishing you could use a 7.5 ft flyrod probably a 5wt or so. It will take more practice to not snare things...and yea you'll prob need some waders/high boots. You'd be looking into more unique flyfishing casts with a creek too>> roll-casting/bow casting and possibly side-casting to really get some range.

Baitcasting is a good place to 'start' though. I like using small rooster-tail spinbaits and roboWorms. Flyfishing is about versatility whereas baitcasting is about covering water.

I like yakin, but unless you're trying to get to the very backs of creeks or the fish are really really spooky a boat is better for actually catching fish.

I think kayaking is a much better experience than boating tho.

>>1049998
Whichever one interest you more then. If you're just tossing around small lures and do go too much above a 1/4oz then I wouldn't get a casting reel, but if you throw full size plastics and there's decent fish in the creeks then go for it.

Otherwise get a fly rod if it's something that interest you.
>>
>>1049830
I imagine you let it go? They're still alive and wriggling when you get to the line, you usually have to check it at least once per 24 hours by law.
>>

The best of both worlds is a small boat with a trolling motor. You can cover water AND get into hard to reach places.

My dad has one of those pelican boats and I fucking love that thing. Makes me want to jury rig a troller on my kayak.
>>
>>1050025
yep. Small boats are pretty cool. If money is out of the equation I think I'd still prefer a full size bass boat just to have room to keep all my shit.

>>
>>1050044
12lb will be more supple, and obviously thinner.

Being thinner means you'll get more line on the reel, on the off chance you hook into something big enough to risk spooling you.

They should not produce noticeably different lure actions, which brings us to...
>it's personal preference
Fish whichever one you have more confidence in.
>>
>>1050025
As someone who's run a 55lb thrust trolling motor on various boats ranging from the 8' Pelican to a 15' jon boat I can tell you with 1000% certainty even an out of shape, novice kayaker can paddle faster than a trolling motor can move pretty much any actual boat.

I will admit I'd like to experience what that 55lb trolling motor could do with a kayak, but jesus fuck it's huge. It would require extensive modification to get the shaft short enough.
>>
>>1050046
Be aware of your back cast. Fly fishing and crowded banks (people, trees, dogs, rocks, etc) don't mix.

As a result I've caught far more oakfish than I have actual fish.

Fall fish tend to bleed a bit regardless of where they get hooked. It's probably fine
>>
>>1050070
Depends on the fish. Fish with small mouths I close my barbs because it's easier to remove them if they go too deep in the mouth. But it's easier for a fish with a bigger mouth to shake a hook so I leave the barbs.

Aight so I just got done at Cabela's and bought the 3 forks/prestige combo
The old man in the fly section was a total bro and told me flat out that if I was getting a combo from Cabela's just to get the 3 forks and that it's a much better casting rod than the wind river (while also being cheaper), so I guess Skid can add that to his sales pitches from now on. The guy also picked out 2 poppers, a damsel fly, a grasshopper, and a nymph for me to get started.

I'm all for using a larger boat, but bass boats are a total meme;

>Fuckhuge outboard that you'll only use at WOT for 10 minutes to get across any large lake
>No freeboard or bow rise so you take water over the sides in even a light chop
>Flat bottom so if you try to go faster than 15-20kts in a chop it's like sitting on a jackhammer and your rattling the boat apart

The issue with them is they only really make sense on larger lakes but not so large that you can start to see waves form, and at that point your better off with a flat bottom john boat, which is way cheaper.

For the same price as a bass boat you could have gotten a center console that you can actually use to the motor's capabilities and will be able to handle weather better, it's like buying a fullsize truck when you don't even own anything to tow.

I've got a 30HP 15ft semi-v skiff that can handle worse conditions than the average bassboat, their only use is blowing around
glassy inland lakes at obnoxious speeds.

Wut. There are lakes where waves don't form? Except in dead calm wind any "large" lake has waves.

Bass boats handle semi rough water fine, they can weigh 1700+ lbs. My lake is 35 mi long and 2-4 mi wide. You can waste a lot of time travelling slow, I can see some of the value of a 70mph boat.

Also, how the fuck do I get dubbing on the thread. I'm having major issues.
>>
>>1050310
Wax on the thread and roll it on. Also it's not bad, bass or sunfish would eat it.
>>
>>1050305

My greater point is that if you go 70mph on choppy water (1ft+ waves) the boat will not last long due to the amount of pounding it receives, I've seen too many bass boats that developed loose rivets and stress cracks from being driven hard, if you go by that rule there's really only a narrow window of conditions that you can actually use the ability to go 70mph on any sort of large water body, thus your better off going 20 and having the boat last longer so why even have the extra horsepower in the first place.

When you combine that with the low sides and shallow bow which cripple it's ability to handle heavier conditions it just seems like as a design it's really only meant to be used on calm lakes, and since a new one runs around 30K you might as well get a similarly sized center console which will be a much more capable boat overall, bass boats just have too small of a niche.

My definition of ,"waves," may be a little bit off though, I live on the Chesapeake bay, so on a good day your looking at a constant 1 foot chop which I consider normal, I'd call conditions ,"waves," once it reaches the 3 foot mark, at least around here bass boats are confined to the local rivers.

Only herring sized though but good enough for baitstrips. Also the first time I ever caught mackerel so another one to cross off the species list.
>>1050371
... not to mention most of the times impressions work just as well as imitations and sometimes you gotta go full turbo-anti-realism to catch anything. Just look at som of the colours, shapes and actions you find in anyones gearbox. Fishing is a mystery.
>>
>>1050310
Twist it on the thread between two fingers until it stays there. If it doesnt want to stay on like that, make a dubbing twister. Anything you can attach to the loop and then twist will work.

Also, if that's a shrimp, maybe cut the flash down a little. You can use rubber bands to make legs, and melted 0.40 nylon to make long eyes.
The easiest way to make a shrimp is with a long marabou tail, it'll expand/retract like a fleeing shrimp.

Here is the video I used when tying that Crayfish. It doesn't look the most realistic out of water....but in water the movement is 10/10. Impression > imitation with flies most of the time. I used red squirrel tail instead of rabbit hair for the claws, then used some plastic scudback to give it the 'shell' on top. I also made the body out of dubbing (FUCK) but will pick up some yarn soon as it's far easier/quicker.

local shops are good for buying some materials for fly tying but probably not good for beginner's low end equipment. It wouldnt hurt checking them out if it's a short drive. Youll need to pick up some flies anyways.

You're looking for a fly rod and reel, fly line, a leader, and tippet as pic related shows. (fly backing if you're after big fish)

Look up "fly rod weight" and match that number with what fish you'll be going for. Basically a 5 is good.

TFO, always, lifetime warranty.

Reddington is not good until you go to their higher end models, have not heard of Albright.

I own Cabela rods/TFO rods/Sage rods. I would recommend TFO for beginning/budget (lifetime warranty) and Sage rods if you have decided to get into fly fishing more seriously. With that being said there is no problem with TFO high end rods too, they are amazing considering their price AND lifetime warranty.

Do you see a theme? Do not buy any fly rod without a lifetime warranty. Especially as a beginner which means you are more likely to break your rod than someone more experienced and all sorts of things can happen to break rods.

Decided to throw a olive green wooly bugger since I lost my other 3 ultra cheap floating flys. I nailed them every cast. My aim with this new rod is significantly improved. I had a decent size bass on but he took me in the pads and snapped my 5 pound tippet line

That is the exact setup that I started with and would wholeheartedly recommend that!

Get a 4 piece, it comes with a rod sock (with dividers), lifetime warranty, and pick a weight based on the fish you expect to run into.

Likely a 6wt 9ft 4piece is a good pick, but the weight will vary depending on what you want to catch. I use a 6wt comfortably to catch sunfish/panfish/bass/catfish but would grab my 8wt or 9wt if I expect to pull out large bass or redfish.

That combo comes with WF floating tapered (weight forward/easiest to cast for starting) fly line too, when I bought it and even came with a tapered leader (5x strength). Killer price point I thought they discontinued it years ago.

I would recommend against the 2 piece rod but that is preference, old pic but here is what a 4 piece 9ft looks like in a rod tube.
>>
>>1050690
In short, a 4 piece is easier to transport, if that is not a problem then 2 piece should be fine.
>>
>>1050670
as of late im the local fly fag, so direct any questions you have at me. what are you fishing for?
>>
>>1050685
Actually, similar names. Signature II is 2 piece and Professional II is 4 piece. I own the Professional but both rods perform very similar according to TFO's website.

Thanks, any recommendation for length?
>>
>>1050690
>>1050695
Also comes with reel/fly line backing. If you add the cost of rod+reel+backing+fly line (WF tapered floating)+leader (tapered) and factor lifetime warranty and rod sock there really are no better options at this price point.

If you don't know where to start, go and talk to some people who actually help people with their fishing needs for a living.
Yes, you will probably pay more than buying online but that is the price you pay for service. If you are from the US look at it as tipping you guys seem so fond of.

>>1050674
>local shops are good for buying some materials for fly tying but probably not good for beginner's low end equipment. It wouldnt hurt checking them out if it's a short drive. Youll need to pick up some flies anyways.
I disagree. Most shops around here have a plethora of beginners' sets of varying (but most surprisingly good for the price) quality and also beginners' fly-tying boxes with the basics covered.
If you are not sure if you get bitten by a fly (pun intended) it's prolly cheaper to buy ready-made flies than it is to buy the fuckton of materials required for fly-tying.
>>
>>1050696
9ft is what I prefer.

Where are you fishing, what conditions (shore/bank fishing or boat/kayak/etc), what type of fish are you going for.

Simply put the shorter the rod the easier to cast with trees/etc behind you, but equally you can learn roll cast (very simple cast) which helps avoid snags that would happen with back casts.

I would not want to go smaller than 9ft but that is a preference.

I consistently recommend never buying from Orvis. With that said, I always recommend their fly fishing tutorial series which are free. It would be wise to watch this series before purchasing said equipment so that you can make sure you are picking the right wt/length/flies.

Do yourself a big favor and watch all the Orvis videos before you buy ANYTHING.

Been fly fishing 10 years and still find the site helpful.

>>
>>1050717
I would say 6wt 9ft 4piece should do you well, but I do recommend you watch those Orvis videos before ordering so that you are well informed.

Shore fishing and kayak fishing is mostly what I do. You have to check behind you if you do standard casts or want to do a double haul casts so that you do not lose your leader and/or fly in a tree.

Always if you get a snag, do not bend the rod to try and retrieve. Pull the line in and aim the rod straight at the fly/tree and pull downward.

Double overhaul
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8idd4kgXY4

Retrieve fly from tree
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBKhzmyFXfY

I usually had flies trapped above me so I would pull down, but the idea is to NOT BEND the fly rod. You may not break it then, but you can weakened it that while casting it will snap. This is again why lifetime warranty is amazing/if not necessary in my opinion.

I walked into the store once not knowing what Orvis was. Looked around a little and walked out believing it was essentially an Eddie Bauer with lots of decorative fly fishing gear. Blew my mind discovering the vids and products later.
>>

are you using a yellow docs jig with the pink feather? a small strip of clam or shrimp can help but you still need to work it in.
>>
what would you guys recommend i look into for a medium rod casting rod? have like ~$100-150 to spend
>>
>>1050634

They have stripers up north don't they? And pike are like gar/bass hybrids. Gar mostly steal your bait unless you're specifically fishing for them, which requires specialized techniques.
>>
>>1050734

Weather underground for me.
>>
>>1050741

>>
>>1050740
Any rod in that price range will be a good rod. Check the reviews before you buy it, but I doubt you'll find many bad ones.
>>
>>1050740
I would recommend the same thing as >>1050695

If you bought the rod separately it would cost only $10-$30 less than buying the whole outfit.

https://tforods.com/pro-ii-fly-rods/

Medium-Fast rod

Lifetime warranty. If you cannot afford it right now, save another $10-$20 so you can. Lifetime warranty. There is no point to buy a cheap rod with no warranty to cover accidental breaks. Even further, you can lose a whole section of your TFO rod and at they will replace it under warranty the same as if the rod broke. Stellar customer service each time I had to use my warranties AND extremely prompt repair turnaround.

You either spend the right amount of money the first time, or spend slightly less multiple times. Not only related to fishing but any material purchases.
>>
>>1050756
Also I believe I found $20 off coupons for Bass Pro before or 15%-20% off from their website. If you are stuck to that price range I would strongly recommend you hold out for such a discount, it would be worth it!

Not him, but Northern Pike are invasive in the pacific northwest.

Somebody illegally stocked them in a stream in Montana 20 years ago and they have been sweeping down the columbia river system ever since. We spend tens of thousands of dollars every year netting the damn things.

They actually pay a bounty of 5 dollars per fish if you bring them in.

Thank you

Additional question I have for fly fishermen, I've read that for bass and bluegill people will tie mono directly to the floating line and not bother with a leader. Is this something I shouldn't do? I have some 15lbs mono and wouldn't mind saving money never buying another leader if mine breaks or something.
>>
>>1050809
Some flies may not turn over as easily, but there's no reason you can't do it on non-line shy fish.
>>
>>1050791
My nephew has the same setup. At age 6, he may be the best fisherman in the family.
>>
>>1050809
If you don't mind spending the money you can get tapered leader where it's an all-in-one thing. Then you just tie it right on to the main line. It's like 7.99 for a 2pk. Now.....if you're good enough at casting and simply fishing for panfish/bass you can say fuck it and use an 8.5lb tippet and forgo the leader entirely.
>>
>>1050809
15lb mono is a little heavy.
Think more like 6lb.

yeah thats sort of what i do.
youre meaning a tapered leader right? a few simple knots and you can make your own taper. it may turn over a little sloppy at first but if you get the ratios correct it works perfectly fine and is an easy way to save money.
they didnt always have nice premade tapered leaders and people before had to make their own..
>>
>>1050812
The only flies I currently own are some larger dry flies and a couple of poppers. So those would turn over okay since they're not super tiny nymphs right?

>>1050815
Is tippet specifically different than mono line?

>>1050816
Turns out I was wrong about it being 15lbs. It's 10lbs, but I also have 6lbs fluoro though that might have sinking issues?

I guess I'll just break down and buy the all in one stuff as needed.
I come from a bass background and I'm used to having line last a fairly long time and not worrying about cutting off line.
>>
>>1050819
Yes tippet is much thinner per lb of force that it can withstand. Something like rio power flex in 8.5lb or 9lb just connect to main line works well for bass (and is relatively cheap). Just remember with a big bass factor in the lbs of force plus the estimated fish weight when bringing it in. A strong/heavy bass can snap a 10lb tippet easier than 10lb mono
