What can I catch with this 1/8th ounce weta? Also France is amazing for fishing, I keep catching 6-7 pound bass, I'm around Avignon and there are a ton of rivers, also all the lures are cheap, like 0.99€ for a spinner, etc., also so much live bait, at all the sports stores I went to, they all have crabs, leeches, minnows, etc.

It's mostly smaller red eared sliders that bug fish. As they get older, their diet becomes increasingly herbivorous.

And even the smaller ones are pretty much incapable of dealing with live healthy fish, instead going for the dying/dead ones.

So to avoid the more annoying little shits, try using slightly larger bluegills with smaller hooks through the nose so they can stay alive longer and have the strength and freedom to escape the turtle's attention.

One of my favorite spots is rife with turtles, but I rarely have issues with them stealing bait. I have recently started hating gar though.
>>
>>1051119
I have not seen a red ear slider in years, but I have caught river cooters and snapping turtles on 7"+ bluegills.
>>
>>1051132

River cooters are the same family as red eared sliders. Snapping turtles are strictly carnivorous. Softshells too.

You can catch literally anything that will eat a minnow.
Bass, trout, pike, panfish, native Yuroland fish that I don't know about but still eat minnows-it'll catch them all.
An inline spinner is one of those lures where if you were limited to just one lure and that was it, you wouldn't go hungry often.

So.

Wooly Bugger bros.

Dubbing or chenille? Size of chenille? w2c cheap hackle, all I can find is like $30+ for a whole partridge skin or faggot-flag dyed bags of loose feathers?
>>
>>1051195
Also, would a mat of black cat hair out of the cat's brush work as dubbing? It's kinda dark grey.

Trying to do this on the ultra-cheap side since otherwise I don't see how I could tie my own much cheaper than I can buy them from the Fly Shack at $0.89 each with free shipping.

go to a fabric store or a michaels look in the yarn section. find one that will work. shits like $5 for a giant roll. micheals sells bags of feathers also. a feather boa works in a pinch.
the cat hair will work for dub, pretty much anything can work as dubbing. I have a few flys tied out of my dogs hair that look fine.

pic related, made from the scraps sitting on the vice.
>>
>>1051195

Dubbing is better for making nymph bodies. Is a pain to use like chenille. If you're doing an olive bugger:

>olive chenille (medium if doing size 4-6 buggers, small chenille if doing smaller)
>hackle: strung rooster saddles (olive)

Check out cabelas.com. Whiting Farms makes some great bugger hackle in their bugger packs but I find that Waspsi also does a great job and even Field n Stream Store brand is alright.

Guys how do I catch trout?

I know for bluegill I catch a bunch with a hook 2-3 feet under a bobber with a weight in between.

Yellow perch are on the bottom an I use 2-3 sinker with 2-3 feet of line attached off the side with a marshmallow by the hook.

Where da trout at? In a lake.

Hey guys, I'm trying to catch black bass, which I have never caught before. I went out to a canal with pic related >>1051094 , and I would spot a bass (I should also note that this is very clear water) and I would cast across to the other side of the canal where from there I would reel it in, and it would flutter to the bank where I was standing. On the path to my location, a black bass (I think you guys call it large mouth bass) would stand to the side of the lure, with the lure passing in front of its face, but all it would do, is it would swim off. What am I doing wrong?

>>
>>1051270
>What am I doing wrong?

Clear water and if you can see them, they can probably see you.

Spinners aren't a great option for sight fishing small water either though. You have to keep them moving and they can spook fish when they land, not good for mid day fish. Better for long casts on open water as a search bait or for trolling during heavy feeding times, dawn and dusk. You should try a small jig or floating or suspending small minnow plug, small and slow basically. Fly poppers are great for this and you could tie one on with a small bobber to add weight for casting. A tiny hook with a micro plastic curly tail grub would be another good choice.
>>
>>1051265
>Guys how do I catch trout?

Depends on the lake and the kind of trout, and how far North you are.

Most lakes in the US right now have warmed up too much to catch any kind of trout very easily. For Lake Trout you could drop shot or jig for them on the bottom in the deepest parts of the lake. It might take some special gear/methods to reach that deep though.
>>
>>1051291

Redpill me on polarized sunglasses.
Are they worth it?
What should I look for when buying them?
>>
>>1051342
Yes, considering you can get polarized gas station cheapos for the same price as non-polarized gas station cheapos.

No, the cheapos with polarization are not as good as the high-end sunglasses with polarization, but they are better than high-end unpolarized sunglasses and a fuckload better than unpolarized cheapos.

Unless you're wanting to drop the big money for Costa or Oakley, the same shit you look in for other sunglasses.
>>
>>1051342
Yes. I have a pair of bass pro brand glasses and they work great. Green tinted lenses are suppose to help you see through dirty water better, but that could be some marketing nonsense I heard.
>>
>>1051342
If you just want to try them out you can get some for $5 in the Wal-Mart fishing department. They normally last me about 2-3 months.
>>
>>1051342
yes although ive never bought a pair. Borrowed my dads then found a pair myself outside.

I found sometimes it's good to wear glasses even if it's not for spotting fish. No accidents hitting you eye (snapping a lure out of a snag) and flies wont bother your eyes.
>>
>>1051162

Get a 1/4 oz egg sinker, small swivel, 5# mono/fluoro, size 7 or smaller hook (preferably salmon egg hooks) and Berkley floating powerbait.

Make a fish finder rig using as much length of mono/fluro leader as you want your bait off the bottom to avoid weeds. Bait the hook with enough powerbait so that it floats.

Locate areas that have submerged tree branches, boulders, dropoffs, overhanging trees, etc. Cast near them and wait about 10 to 15 minutes. If you don't get any bites, then move.

If you have a second rod, then toss a super duper, small inline spinner, marabou jig, etc while you wait.

Continue moving around until you find the fish.

Hi fellow anglers
I've recently gotten into fishing with my dad since he has retired.

I'm using a rod my step grand father left me after he died, it's a Walmart brand with a zebco 33 spin caster on it.

Recently the zebco 33 had a piece break.

Should I use this as a time to upgrade to a spinning reel with a new rod? I was looking at the shimano combination on the imgur albulm or should I spend the money on a replacement zebco 33?

We fish mostly from a Jon boat in the James river in and around Richmond, VA. Mostly catching small sun fish and occasionally a bass.

What would be the best size recommendation if I did go spinner reel? I know this sounds dumb, but I was looking at the uglystick gx2 at Dicks and thought the "middle" sized one looked appropriate. It came on about a six foot rod.

Thanks for the advice and happy fishing!

There's this fat mouth breathing fuck at my favorite lake resevoir that goes around with his $500 baitcaster setups, and he annoys the fuck out of me and other fishermen about this small-business tackle shop he goes to that he acts as a middle-man for to bring in more business.

Every fucking time I see him he appraches me uninvited to ask me if I've gone to his shop yet to look into getting a more "professional" rod and reel that isn't my Daiwa spinner + lightning rod. And he literally DOESN'T shut the fuck up.

>heh you should check out this brand I use man and by the way NEVER use Trilene!
>judging by your casts I'd say your line isn't wound real tight might want to go into the shop and have that machine wound buddy
>why aren't you using a football jig like I mentioned last time dude?

I don't know what I'm going to do if I run into him yet again. He doesn't leave until he feels like you've got the message. He made me pack up and leave once because he literally wouldn't go away.
>>
>>1051513

>>
>>1051506
>Should I use this as a time to upgrade to a spinning reel with a new rod
yes
>What would be the best size recommendation if I did go spinner reel
get a 2000 or 2500 size reel and a 6'6'' medium power berkley lighting rod, and have it spooled with 8 pound test line
you'll be happy. and stay away from uglystiks.
>>
>>1051270

The fish don't want what that lure. A shallow diving hard jerkbait, a twitch bait, top water, or soft plastic bait might get a strike.

And of course there's live bait. Bass cruising the shallows are usually looking to ambush smaller fish near the shore. They rush them and the baitfish, caught between the bass and the shore have less room for escape. A shiner, sunfish, or something similar free lined or set 6 inches or more under a bobber and cast near the shore is almost granteed to get you some strikes.
>>
>>1051317

Rhats called a wacky rig. Certain plastic worms work better for it than others. You fish it by basically hopping it along the bottom.
>>
>>1051320

Depends on how big the fish are. I mean a small fish will ocasionally slam a bigger bait, but usually you want a variety of sizes to match what the fish want.
>>
>>1051342

I didn't believe the hype until I got a pair for 10 bucks and took them to the coast. I saw fish I never knew were there. You don't need an expensive pair.
>>
>>1051519
its a curve of deminishing returns
$10 glasses are infinatley better than noglasses, and $50 glasses are better than 10$ glasses , but not 5 times better
and $200 glasses are better than the $50 pair, But not 4x better
that being said i have both cheap and expensive pairs and i always grab my expensive pair for myself, and keep the cheap ones for friends

I've been a little perplexed by this as well. I need to find some way to indentify the sunfish I catch at that pond while I have them in hand. I know off the top of my head there are at least three different species. How many others are in there and how many of those are hybrids idk. It's also strange considering this pond has never in its existence ever been stocked. Nor does it have a feeder stream coming into it.
>>
>>1051610

Sunfish will find their way into any body of water.

I personally consider a lack of sunfish in any given body of water to be a sign that I'm gonna have a bad time. They're my preferred bait 85% of the time and they make a great confidence booster when you're otherwise skunked. If they aren't biting, nothing is.

>>1051616
Yeah sunfish are awesome. I really wish I knew more behind the ways fish can move from a populated body of water to a seemingly uninhabited pond and then thrive there with multiple other species including predators. I know birds are one way but even that doesn't really make much sense to me. I also know flooding can be a possiblitly but there is no other body of water for miles and the banks surrounding the pond are big enough to hold a substantial amount of water if need be.

What parts of the crab do you use as bait, how to hook, etc? I've thought about it since I occasionally catch a bunch but I don't even know where to begin with them
>>
>>1051633

I fish them alive whenever possible to better avoid scavengers. I remove the claws then run a wide gap hook through the rear leg hole and up through the top of the carapace.

I prefer to live line them, but I'll also use a fish finder, knocker rig, or even a big ass bobber and let them swim in the current.

Good for red and black drum.

>>
>>1051741
>As a side note, I heard last week that people tend to retrieve their crankbait too slowly.

I've always read people crank them too fast. Ideally you should vary your retrieve until you get bites. I usually alternate between slow, fast, and adding pauses. I tend to go just fast enough to where I can feel the crank moving.

Also, tequila sunrise is the goat color. Good choice anon.

How big are the ones you usually use?
>>
Guys, I came yesterday with this question >>1051270 and I have tried a 6 inch minnow plug, wacky worming, a jig with plastic tentacles, and the black bass will not attack them, even the sun fish don't want to attack the jig, why am I failing?
>>
>>1051834
Three options:
(1) they just don't like your lure today
(2) you are fishing your lure wrong (eg. straight retrieve at constant speed for a jig). Somewhat connected to (1). Sometimes fishing a lure 'wrong' leads to bites
(3) Them fish just ain't bitin' today

Fishing is not an exact science you know. It's impossible to 100% predict what will catch fish on a certain day. Although with experience you learn what is most likely to work under given conditions.
>>
>>1051835
Fuck me. I have tried to catch the black bass for about 5 days. The only thing I can catch are catfish.

>>
>>1051772

Oohhh. Smart idea!
>>
>>1051809

2 to 7 inches. Bigger bass prefer the larger ones. I usuallyhook them through the nose (bass eat them head first) and free line or suspend them 6 to 12 inches under the smallest cork I can get away with. I've also started clipping the fin spines as per some advice here.

It nearly always works. Just this weekend I was fishing the Pecos just outside Roswell NM. I'd been skunked the previous morning using plastics, jerk baits, and spinners.

Next morning I took my ultralight rod and caught some bluegill (and big red shiners) and started slaying bass. I was the only person out there catching fish and I was just pulling them in one after the other to the point other fishermen started asking what the hell I was doing.

I caught some more bait and left everyone some on my way out.

>>
>>1052067

>>
>>1052050
Scientific Anglers' fly lines are excellent, and reasonably priced. I see nothing wrong with that as a whole.

That's not a terrible combo you linked either. I know the rod isn't great, but it's solidly okay for the money (I do think an Echo for $90 or a Cabela's 3 Forks for $50 are both better buys though). The reel is fine. The line is fine. Backing is backing and trout will never spool you.

Orvis rods are good. Unfortunately, they range from expensive to "holy fuck that's 3 mortgage payments" expensive. There are rods that are 99% as good for 30% the money when comparing their low to mid end rods. That's why we recommend you avoid them (for now).

>>1052067
Bosnians are the single worst offenders here. They completely ignore take sizes and limits, fish without licenses, use liquid poisons and gill nets, etc.
>>
>>1052070
I should also mention that at least where I live, all the other minorities are simply bad enough at fishing that even if they try to take home stringers full of bass, they fail at it because they don't catch that many.
>>
>used baitcaster is a bit of a mess

>>
>>1052074
Yeah people often back their braid because it's expensive comparatively.
>>
>>1052074
Common practice, yes.
>>
>>1052060
People think things like "it's only five fish what's the big deal" and don't realize that half of the other retards/minorities think like that. I think alot off lakes would benefit from a slot limit for bass.

That being said, there needs to be something to keep the bass population in check, since they don't have a lot of natural predators. But people abuse for the same reason above.

>>1052074
There's no reason not to if you're fishing for bass/small cats
>>
>>1052074
Yeah it's pretty common, some do it to save on line but braid is way lower friction than mono so it helps reduce the chance that the line just spins on the spool if it's not wound tightly as well.

Let me rephrase this because I realized what I said sounds pretty dumb. Some states consider crappie gamefish and not equal to sunfish/perch, or its in a state where crappie might not be as prolific/grow as fast. Here's a list with the limits and such if you're interested.

Within even remotely similar price brackets the baitcaster will have a smoother, more reliable drag.

Baitcasters protect the line better.

Low profile baitcasters load the rod better due to keeping the line closer to parallel to the rod and not relying solely on hanging off the guides.

What's a good MedHvy casting rod around the $100 mark? I want something for 1/2oz Texas rigs and jigs. I planned on just pairing the rod with a Stratus V, but if that's a bad idea I'm open to reel suggestions too.
>>
>>1052319
If TW still has blackout rods you could do one of those. The no. 8 tackle hellbent rods are pretty good too. Abu vendetta is great. Dobyns fury is good. You'll have a hard time finding a bad rod in that price range.

>I planned on just pairing the rod with a Stratus V, but if that's a bad idea I'm open to reel suggestions too.
There's nothing wrong with this, but your rod will be nicer than your reel. If you have/feel like spending the money it'd be worth it to get a nicer reel imo.
>>
>>1052319
Duckett Ghost, $99.99 most places. Literally the best casting rod in its price bracket.

Next step down would be a Skeet Reese "heavy jig/big worm" rod for $70-80, but it's a fairly big step down in quality. I'd say it and the Abu Veritas 2.0 are tied.
>>
>>1052328
I've read on here that the Stratus V is the only reel worth looking at that's under $100, so is there something better than it but also less than a Curado? I mean the way I see it if I'm going to spend like $130 I might as well shell out the extra $20 for a Curado.

I rank the the stratus V about just as good as any other sub $100 reel. Also, for heavy lures it rubs braid enough to fray it, which really sucks.

You should definitely get a Curado or Abu STX either way.

If you can't spend the money then don't go out of your way to do it, but it's worth it if youll use it.

I'm the one that sings the praises of the Stratus V. I really genuinely believe that it's the best sub-$100 reel going.

That being said, Dick's has the Shimano Caenan on sale for $80 right now. It's slightly better than the Stratus V. Slightly. And you don't have to worry about matching a white reel to a rod (although they go fucking fantastic with Duckett rods...just sayin').
>yes I do work for Dick's, but everything I recommend I personally own. I couldn't give fewer fucks if you shop there or not.
What's this about which breaking? I've never seen a Duckett break other than when some dumbshit shuts it in a car door or tailgate.

Yes, the Skeet Reese rods break. Frequently. That's how I got mine--the entire handle and reel seat came unglued from the blank and I snagged it out of the defect bin for $10. Fixed it with about 30 cents worth of superglue. However, they DO have a warranty. A decent one IIRC (3 years?).

I have never heard of or seen any of the various styles and sizes of Stratus V breaking.
>>
>>1052345
>rubs braid enough to fray it
My frog rod is a Veritas 2.0 wearing a Stratus V with 30lb Power Pro. I've fished it heavily for 2 years, with the same line no less. No frays. Either you did something wrong or you got a defective reel.

>one broke after the first fish
Okay, only explanation I have for this without further info is manufacturer's defect. It happens. I've had no issues with them and they get returned as "defective" significantly less frequently than literally any other rod we sell.

>>1052370
No, I'm saying that it was easily preventable with something that takes no effort or time and is something he should do literally every time he is not in the vehicle. I catch 90% of trout on carolina rigs baited with powerbait.

I also use knocker rigs (similar to Carolina rigs) when fishing structure in saltwater like piers, jetties, and bridges. Catch everything under the sun.

The rig is also more useful on a boat. Drftinggtrolling with them has caught me plenty of flounder, redfish, lmb, white bass, and stripers.

I use live shrimp, crab, and mullet in salt water and live and ocasionally cut shiners, shad, tilapia, and panfish in fresh.

How to rig roboworms also what sized hook for sunfish? Can I use salami as bait?
>>
>>1052676
I like to nose-hook roboworms for dropshot/splitshot, but you can do traditional weedless Texas or Carolina rigs with them as well.

#8 or #6 aberdeen for sunfish if you're using live bait or shit like the Gulp minnows/worms/etc. #4-#1 for fishing live minnows for crappie.

You can use salami but you'll most likely only catch catfish with it in fresh water. Pinfish love it if you're saltwater fishing, they're basically saltwater bluegill.
>>
>>1052676
>>1052686
Oh, also, roboworms are skinny enough I wouldn't go larger than a 2/0 offset or 3/0 EWG with them if you're rigging weedless. For nose-hooking I'd recommend a #2 dropshot hook or #1 circle hook, although I've successfully used as large as #2/0 circle hooks.

Either learn how to cast so you don't bullseye a tree or learn how to tie knots properly.

There's instructions for knots in the OP pastebin.
>>
>>1052697
No problem.

There's a bunch of ways to fish a shakey head. You can hop it along the bottom (twitch the rod tip a short distance, fairly violently, to make it hop a foot or so), drag it like I explained, pitch it into cover if rigged weedless, or sit it on the bottom in one spot and twitch it (gentle, very very short movements of the rod tip). Basically the same way you'd fish a skirted jig.

Same principles apply to Ned rigs and football jigs.

>>
>>1052706
They stand up better than a regular shakey head, which is just a standard ball-head jig with a longer hook shank. However they make stand-up shakey heads which have a flat spot on the head. Those stand up the best. Alternatively you can use mushroom head jigs (like the Z-man ned rig "shroomz").

There's a ton of overlap in techniques and which tackle you can use. The shroomz heads get hung up in rocks really bad but do well in weeds, and if I'm Ned rigging around rocks I'll just use a regular, unpainted Eagle Claw 1/8oz ball head that I've trimmed the shank weight on.

The other upside is the park rangers see me doing this, get the warm fuzzies, and either come help me or just wait til I pull out and thank me by giving me their own collections of lost lures.

The state manages the population, you pay into the system with your license and you get the opportunity to fish how you like within the rules set. Ecologists paid by the state make sure fishing policies are sustainable. As long as everybody follows the rules, the pastime will continue.
>>

>sportsman without being conservationalist

You are aware hunting and fishing are for the most part a way to incentivize people to thin out certain species of over-populated or invasion species right? It's illegal to catch and release Snakeheads, you have to kill them or take them to authorities, because they don't belong in North America and are destroying the ecosystem. It's why crappie can't be kept below a certain size and why you can't hunt doe.

My favorite fishing hole banned catching walleye 18 months ago to allow the population to swell for future fishing seasons. It's not like we depopulate the waters.

>implying fully half of the problems on America's lakes wouldn't be solved by less C&R
For most situations keeping what you catch is fine. And for lots of situations, it's actually a very good thing for the ecosystem. Most people don't live exclusively on fish they catch in the rivers/lakes/what have you. They go fishing a few times a year, and them keeping a few fish doesn't significantly affect populations.
Sure you can trot out examples of people with 20 rods catching 150 fish at a time, and so can I. But those people are the rare exception, not the rule.
Most of the time our natural role as predators is needed because fish populations don't control themselves, and what might seem like a lot of population reduction is nevertheless sustainable over the long term.

Besides, overpopulation leads to forage shortages, stunted growth and ultimately population crashes. Why do you think everybody and their brother here is only catching dinks? C&R is a good thing overall, but even it can be taken too far. I bet many of those lakes' health would actually be improved by taking a few more fish out.

First step is to get rid of the snap swivel.

Reel's fine, I know shit-all about the rod. Should serve.

>you can't hunt doe.
Maybe YOU can't, but down here in South GA our deer populations have arguably gone beyond the carrying capacity of the land. They're actually encouraging us to kill LOTS of does. We don't have a single rut because does so outnumber the bucks that the bucks don't have to compete to breed. Rather, every year we have more and more does that go unbred.

Why not just go hunting and go to Vegas later?

For survival purposes, possibly, but there is no good reason to do so otherwise

I will concede that I tend towards a more conservative viewpoint of culling, but the main reason for the necessity of culling animals of prey (deer and invasives) comes the "necessary" culling of predatory animals (think wolves, coyotes, muskies, bears, certain falcons primarily) because they were dangerous towards humans and livestock and their pelts were of values. I do not think the culling of species of prey will do any good in the long term, as we are simply delaying the enevitable collapse of many ecosystems (primarily the rangeland). Otherwise, I think we should allow nature to reach an equilibrium, which many people do not understand takes about two centuries.

What compels you to kill animals of sport? Can you not hunt deer with binoculars instead of rifles? Fish lures without hooks?

I bet you are the kind of people who hunt deer from a stand, use fishfinders, live bait, and online fishing reports

The water level was drought tier for 3 months this year. Everything got low. Grass grew. Extending the grass wall even further. Plus on a bass rig (7 foot medium action with 12lb mono) murdered any casting distance. When the grass line from the edge was probably 15 feet. Throwing sub 1/4oz weighted stuff. I think the line kept breaking because I was using some really old stuff I spooled up because I'm literally out of fucking line, broke as fuck with a busted engine. And wanted to do some fishing.. Soon I'll be using sewing thread if my luck doesn't pick up.

>because fish populations don't control themselves
Sorry to cherrypick only one thing. Most of what you say is true. The average line, hook and sinker fisherman doesn't catch nearly enough to influence the ecosystem unless we are talking small systems or that said fisherman deliberately targets apex predators all day erry day.
What I quoted is blatantly false though. In a healthy system where you have a variety of fish and healthy water (eg. no excessive growth of algea in warm periods) a population of fish very much regulates itself. It goes in circles though. Too many predators leads to less prey. Less prey leads to less predators. Less predators leads to more prey. More prey leads to more predators and so on and so on.
Some circles take longer than others ofc. and more often than not trying to save the lake by interfering only makes matters worse in the long run.

question:
I'm going spinning for bass/pikes this weekend, and it is going to be extremely hot, 38°C or maybe more: what are those fishes going to behave? Are they going to lay deep down where the water is more fresh?
Thanks
