I just got finished taking one of my best friends out fishing for the first time in his adult life at a local lake.

Story time

>best friend wants to come up and visit but doesn't know what to do
>Know he's been stressed lately and casually suggest we can go fishing
>surprisingly he agrees
>arrives and eager to go
>but admits he's not a fisherman at all, hasn't been in years and doesn't own a rod.
>knew this already,
>was already prepared to do easy mode fishing.
>rigged up two of my poles with bobbers, hooks and worms and headed out to the impound lake in my development.
>gave him a spinning rod and showed him how to cast it,
>grabbed my old crappie rod with an ancient baitcaster on it.
>Spend 2-1/2 hours fishing yesterday
>and nearly 2 hours today
>just casting out, letting worms soak, bullshitting about life and pulling in dinks.
>He outcatches me 2 to 1
>not jealous at all.
>He's going through a rough patch in his life and needed to win a little.
>He won this weekend.

Now he's talking about getting a little fishing pole, buying a license and going fishing on his own.

Mission accomplished.
Dink bluegill are a national treasure.

5hp outboard will move a jonboat just fine. Just remember-ethanol free gas is your best friend for marine things.
If you've gotta strap it to the top of a car, it's best to flip the boat upside down and line the edges with pool noodles that you split down the sides. You can get a pretty decent boat to ride on top of your car this way with some ratchet straps.

just depends on how fast you want to go. jon boats are best in calmer waters and rivers.
i have a 15hp johnson on a 14' valco and a 3.5hp merc on a 10' jon boat. the 3.5 actually gets the boat on plane when alone but with 2 people its a slow ride.

I'm from SWFL. Been fishing on the beach or saltwater canals my whole life but I want to try fishing in the Everglades. What fish are good to eat from freshwater down here?

FL freshwater fishing:
Crappie are GOAT eating
Panfish (bluegill, shellcracker, redear, etc) are next best
Largemouth bass are behind them, then pike, then bowfin (acquired taste), then gar, though the Seminoles would probably debate me on that last one.

Unless you have a boat and the proper equipment to get lures down deep enough your chances of catching a nice pike are pretty slim. You should be able to still pull out some snakes (small pike) any time of the year if you are fishing the right areas. Try and find an area where there is good vegitation line where on one side it's weedy and then on the other it's open and usually deeper. Like I said it's not going to be easy without a boat but you might get lucky.

It's kinda hard to tell but pic related was when I was fishing a little bay off of the main lake that beavers had damned up to make their own sucluded pond. Pike came up and smaked my lure as I was lifting it up to cast it again.

any cool tips for fishing at night?

would a small LED light above my weight scare off fish? its hard to see my leader at night
>>
I just went to Bass Pro today and bought a 7'6" medium light Berkley Shock Lightning rod and a Pflueger President 6900 Series spinning reel.

On the rod, it's line rating is 4-10lb (I'm assuming mono as it doesn't specify) and lure rating of 1/8oz to 5/8oz.

On the reel it states 4lb mono or 6lb braid.

I plan on using this for trout fishing 1/4oz lures for trophy rainbow trout in stocked ponds that are abundant around here.

Should I go with 4lb or 6lb line? I feel like 4lb would be best because some of the ponds I go to are crystal clear and the trout are very line shy, yet I don't want to go too low and end up losing $10 lures every fishing trip.

The pond I frequent the most has a rocky/sandy bottom with some grass. Have been fishing there since I was a kid and never got hung up on any branches or logs.
>>
>>1031063
Yes. They're all over the Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades watershed.

>>1031080
If it's as clear as you say I'd go lighter, but even 6lb mono isn't that much more visible and would give you some extra margin of confidence.
It's when you get into 10-12lb line and above that visibility becomes a big concern for heavily pressured fish.
>>
>>1031073
My main spot is a secluded cove right off our main lake. Right before the cove forms, it's a deep channel then into the cove are thick weedbeds. I've been targeting inside the cove, in the weedbeds. Yes, if the weather cooperates for you. Now is the time especially for lake trout on light tackle, or pre spawn smallmouth. Just a week or two left for those, but panfish (pumpkinseed, perch, rockbass) and LMB should be hot through June. Maybe the most important reason to fish now though is that high season for tourists is going to start in a few weeks and this lake will be an absolute madhouse with speedboats, jet skiis, cruises, etc. For now though it's pretty quiet.

Nope. I pretty much only fish LG. Schroon when it freezes over before George.

Don't get me wrong it's still worth going out...I'd take LG any day of the year before Saratoga or Sacandaga, or wherever else. Just before the last week of June is best.

Circle hooks will reduce the number swallowed, and you don't need massive ones.

Otherwise, mind your line better.

You will never 100% eliminate it, fish manage to swallow shit that should be physically impossible on a routine basis.
>caught a dink bluegill
>it had completely swallowed a 1/8oz ballhead and a 3" grub
>like, how the fuck did you even get it in your mouth, much less swallowed completely?
The jighead was worth more than the fish. Fortunately bluegill are delicious.
>>
>>1031321
If you're not using lures, I hope you aren't going for C&R

I never had a huge problem with cats swallowing hooks, but I also normally run enough weight to keep the line tight so I can set the hook as soon as I see the rod tip bounce from a bite.

Anyone know another rod priced similarly that doesn't have cork handles? I don't like cork. I get my rods wet often and c9rk gets raped by the dry air here in Arizona after repeated dunkings.

Yeah, trying to suss out what fish locals are talking about from place to place requires experience.

Especially tough with panfish as there are many species, many of which have similar patterns and a tendency to hybridize.

I remember when I started fishing the gulf coast and people kept telling me they were using minnows/geenbacks/sardines as bait.

Then I actually see what they're using, and I'm like, "Those are shad."

Mainly Jawbone (Dick's store brand), although I've got some Lunkerhunt as well.

I will never understand the appeal of trout fishing.
>they're hard/challenging to catch anon!
Not where I've fished, which encompasses 6 different states and ~10 different species. Literally a bite on every cast with a landed fish every 3 on average. And yes this includes flies, spinners, and powerbait.
>they taste good anon!
Fair enough I guess, but so do a dozen other species of fish, and still not as good as salmon or tuna.
>they fight good anon!
...fuck no. Pound for pound they're probably the weakest fish I've ever caught. With an average of 1.5lbs across the 3 main species I fish for (rainbow, brook, brown) I'd MUCH rather fight smallies or crappie. Hell, bull 'gills put up more of a fight than trout twice their weight.
>but they jump and thrash!
I've caught probably close to 15,000 trout over the last 25 years and NOT ONCE has one EVER jumped or done anything more than swim straight away from me while hugging the bottom.
>>
>>1031616

The various species of shad, sardines, nd herring are apparently closely related. I mean they aren't the exact same as Threadfin and Gizzard shad we use in freshwater in Texas, but they look the same, are just as fragile, are just as oily and are fished pretty much the same way.
>>
>>1031652
Every fish mentioned in that post is trash fish. I'll take you real fishing and let you reel in some houndfish or take you out for some shark fishing
>>
>>1031652

Trout are only "hard to catch" because many fly fisherman turn their nose up at all the other more effective methods.
>>
>>1031664

We're not talking about saltwater fish. Just fish you would find in the same body of water as trout.

And bluegill and crappie are objectively delicious.
>>
>>1031667
I can get trout to hit my flies every single cast with a fly rod too though.

I've got a shitty little stream (maybe 18" deep on average and narrow enough I can jump across it) with brookies and rainbows in my subdivision. Despite literally everybody fishing for them and most of us keeping our limit (4) daily 8-10 months out of the year they're still totally retarded and there's still a healthy population. I can literally cast into it off my back patio.
>>1031664
Been there, done that, I love saltwater fishing but don't live even remotely close to a coast atm.
>>
>>1031652
This. Stocked ones are stupid and present no challenge, while wild ones are near impossible to catch unless you drop a 1/1528th oz one of a kind fly tied by a hermit in Saskatchewan at 8:29 a.m. with 37% humidity and 42 degree water temperature

different anon, Most stocked trout are infact dumb as fuck though once theyve survived a year or two as holdovers they do smarten up
Granted most of those around here are a special strain bread specially for survivability and they do come off somewhat brighter than normal stockies,
wild trout ( and the only true wild trout around here are <8 inch brookies in tiny tiny brooks) and they can be very difficult to catch, not so much that theyre hesitant to bite, butt moreso how easy it to spook them without even knowing it
>>
>>1031680
i usually use the next size down personally, i have one normal one in black, and one in a frog color with only one frog hook on the back end, i also have a screw lock on the back to attatch worms to immitate snakes at dawn and dusk, works gr8
>>
>>1031652
the biggest thing is, flyfishermen go fishing for more than just fish, and generally trout are not fished for by people who only fish for fish, so fly fishermen hike in to the woods to find what they seek, often more than a simple trout
if i want a challenging fish i go after carp. they pull hard, and are surprisingly finnicky, because you have to find them while they are already feeding, drop the fly right on their nose without spooking them, then do it again, and again, trying to entice a bite, which may never come
>>
>>1031683

I think the sizes on those might be hard to judge online without knowing exactly how they look in person. Yuro got me a black Spook from them and it's pretty big. Not so large I don't use it but def for 16"+ bass.

Still best topwater I've ever used is the Rapala Skitter Pop in brown frog.

>>
>>1031691
Okay, lemme rephrase. Wild trout, not constantly stocked. They stocked the stream with brookies ~40 years ago when they built a chain of subdivisions and haven't fucked with it since. The rainbows are native. I live in northeastern Wyoming.
>>
>>1031695
okay, go to a tying vice, with a #8 aberdeen hooks, and a 4-0 ewg hook, put the ewg in a tying vice and use some 3/0 white thread to tie a giant pheasant tail nymph on it, take it out of there, then get your size 8 aberdeen and tie a gummy minnow, then take both these flies, and align them back to back, and tie them together with the thread so the eyes are aligned. tie those to your line, with a 2 oz egg sinker and a bead under the biggest bibber you can find and gently crawl it on the bottom tipped with chicken liver
>>
>>1031699
I was thinking a 3oz egg sinker to a barrel swivel. Then a short 4-6" leader to a 3 way swivel. Then a 4-6" leader from those 2 ends to more 3 way swivels. So now you have 4 ends. You can rig one for bass and crappie and the other for catfish and trout. Actually make the catfish one lead to another 3 way swivel so you have 2 lines for catfish.

You wanna get that thing swinging like a helicopter above your head then just sling it out there.

Yeah I feel. It's not really the size necessarily just how much water the bill moves. I think it might spook the smaller fish or fish that aren't being aggressive. Especially since most of the water I fish is pretty pressured. I got a few places I think it'll work tho.

First off it sinks
So you can't pause it for more than a moment

It's signifiantly smaller than I had previously expected

Doesn't move much water

Runs slightly lower in the water than I would have liked

And the action isn't great
Tbh having it on th jitterbug is a huge improvement fixing Evey one of those issues

What are the best kayaks for fishing and hauling a bunch of camping gear?
>>
>>1031716
Hobie if money isn't an issue.
>>
>>1031711
Really? I remember how stoked you were to actually find out where to buy them. They didn't work out?

>>1031714
Sometimes moving less water is a little better tho. Like you don't want to run a big ass popper or buzzbait on a glass smooth morning with pressured fish and you would be better off with a spook.

I think that's why I like the poppers tho. It you git gud, you should be able to get that little "gulp" sound when you pop it and that gets some attention.

>>1031717
Are Hobies all pedal ones?
>>
>>1031722
There's 2 non-pedal ones. But yeah all the "good" fishing kayaks by Hobie are pedal.
>>
>>1031722
All of them I've seen. They cost about twice as much as a jon boat. Always see all the rich kids at the beach in them.

I have a Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game Angler II. Paid about $1,400 for it. I take it on camping/fishing trips in the National Forest. There's a lake that I go to that is surrounded by camping spots and it's easier to just fish all day then pull up at one of the spots rather than walk all the way around the lake.

Ocean Kayak is a good brand. You'll get plenty of cargo space and it comes with a lot of features for a medium range kayak.
>>
>>1031722
They work, my biggest gripe is not being able to let them sit or they start sinking
If I were to fish them in the daytime I'd rather the original wakebait head. , At night you need something that loves water and makes noise
Which the modified jitterbug does

>>
>>1031734

>>
>>1031722
>Are Hobies all pedal ones?

Most are. The Quest series is not.

There are plenty of great kayaks that do and don't have pedal drives.

If you're looking to fish, you want a sit on top with at least some rod holders, a built in anchor trolley (or space for one), a comfortable seat (you'll be in it for hours), and flat spaces for you to attach additional rod holders/gps/fishfinder/etc.

For camping gear, you'll be prioritizing weight capacity and storage space, so nice big dry storage areas would be best.

There's also your weight to consider, as most smaller kayaks can't handle more than 250lbs, but a kayak built for it can easily handle up to 400-500 lbs.

I do fine fishing and camping on my $400 dollar Perception Striker that hauls over 400lbs no problem and allows me to stand and fish at the same time (I weight a little under 250). I would like a pedal kayak eventually, mainly because it'd easier to pedal with my feet and cast at the same time.

Speaking of kayak fishing, I plan on taking mine this Summer to the beach for some inshore fishing. I live in Virginia and plan on doing some fishing around the bridge bay and tunnel. Would like to catch some flounder, striped bass, etc.

I've never been saltwater fishing before though and most of my rigs are ultralights to medium lights for trout fishing.

where I live shad live in the ocean most of the year, then they swim up the river to spawn. theyre an odd fish though because they only eat plankton in the ocean yet when they are in the rivers they attack jigs and baitfish.
I assume its to protect the eggs because when they are in the rivers to spawn they dont actually eat anything until theyre back in the ocean. they are also really fun to catch on ultra light tackle. dey gots dat stamina

You got sheepshead over there? You could catch them by a bridge or jetty. For stripers you could do a bit of trolling with rat L traps or bunker spoons. Buy some bucktail jigs they're a go to for northeast and mid atlantic saltwater fishing

You want a rod rated for at least 1oz lures. Depending on the size of fish you're seeking, I would go with 1/2 to 1oz lures. You don't really need anything bigger for inshore fishing throwing lures. As for trolling baits, I would just stick to your catfish rod and buy a saltwater reel that can hold more line and you can just change the reel out depending on your trip. .

So I didn't catch anything, but boy did I see some strange shit today.

I'm casting around enjoying my peace and quiet when I hear someone behind me. I turn around and there's this older Mexican dude holding a bag of bread and, I shit you not, a fucking duck.

He's like "you seen any more ducks around here"

"...n-no man I don't think so"

"Oh okay"

So then this dude disappears farther down the creek and I don't see him for awhile. Well when I was walking back to my car I see him put the duck down next to some more ducks then leave.

I guess he found the duck wandering around and thought it needed to be with other ducks. Was a strange sight for sure.

Also, one of the county park lakes I fish at is fucking inundated with ducks and geese. I watched a little girl waddle over and pick up a mallard drake and the duck's just like "meh, whatever" and let her. She carried it around for a solid half hour, got bored, put it down and it just walked over to an old lady on a bench and started begging.

This so much

Lots of trout fishermen are still devotees of the Frederic Halford school of fly fishing autistic purity. Halford decreed that there should be only ONE type of fly (the dry), fished ONE way (topwater), on ONE type of stream (tiny chalk streams), EVERYTHING had to be just so, and even then you didn't always catch fish.
It's actually completely retarded because you willfully ignore 90+% of a trout's actual diet and behavior in favor of a couple of specific things that happen at very specific times of the year.
It took 50+ years before another author (G.E.M. Skues) came along and dared to dethrone Halford. And he eventually did, inventing modern nymph fishing as we know it. But not before getting thrown out of his own fishing club for "being unsporting" by catching too many fish (aka "embarrassing the idiots who refused to learn from him").

>spoons
because they're stupid easy to catch good fish with. That pike was on my second time using a squarebill.
>>
>>1032117
That's why I reccommend Mepps and Rapalas because they are both super easy to use and easy to get good hook sets. Other lures you really have to get the action down or use them at the right time to catch anything. Poppers are like that.
>>
>>1032117
I think soft plastic is still easier than spoon

spoon only werks when fish are in feeding mood. I've run a spoon pass a spot multiple times and get nothing but get a hook up as soon as switching to soft plastic or crank/jerkbait
>>
>>1032120
Ehh, I see your point but spoons are like spinners where it's super easy as long as the fish are hunting. Anything else required a little knowledge to use. If you just put a hook through a worm and run it like a spoon, you're not going to catch shit if they aren't actively feeding.

But that's why bass fishing can be fun. If it were like pre-spawn all the time, it wouldn't ever be a challenge.
>>
>>1032119
mepps blow in muddy water
>>
>>1032120
Depends on the fish IMO. I've yet to run a lipless through a spot I KNOW has a fish and not gotten a strike. Doesn't matter size or color, whether I burn it or pump it or fish it slow.

Can't say that about plastics, I've watched bass turn their nose up at them time and time again, I've even gone as far as dragging a brush hog across the back of one and it just let me.

Problem is, there's a lot of water you can't fish a lipless in.

Hey /out/, just wanted to share my experience.
I'm an amateur fisherman, this is my second year of fishing.
The past few times that I've gone out I haven't had any luck, It seems like that bad streak built up some good karma for me.Go out to local canoe launch point, cast a bobber with a worm from the banks into the weed and the fish were catching themselves. Literally every other cast I caught a fish. Caught 15+ bluegillsset free 7, kept 8. Great day of fishing, but I feel kinda guilty. My buddy who's very /out/ told me to not eat the fish, as I had intended (plus I had already given all 8 a tappy tap on the head with a rock to help them sleep...) because of I caught them in a river that stems from a large city. Mind you, I am 30 miles away from the city, but he told me that there are still probably a bunch of contaminants in the water. Anyways, felt a little guilty for having killed the fish and not eaten them... Should I have eaten them /out/?
>>
>>1032151
killing fish doesn't matter, but you shoulda ate them
>>
>>1032152
Killing the fish without eating them felt wrong. I'll just do catch and release next time I go out for bluegill. They're fun to catch, but their size makes it almost not worth the prep time for eating haha. Supposedly there's good smallmouth in the waters near me. I think I'll go for that.
>>
>>1032151
Your buddy might have been right, do some research on waters that are safe to eat from.

Caught another gar this morning. My first fish on a bombarda rig, but besides that it was a very frustrating morning.
I saw a fuckton of huge trouts (2-4kg) leap out of the water in front of me and feast on insects on the water surface. I tried everything I had to catch them (spoons, lures, spinners, earthworm, wet flies), but they werent having any of it.
Pretty annoying, but I have a plan for next time...

Your friend has a point-you need to check before just choking down on them. Heavy metal poisoning is nothing to sneeze at, so check to see how much is safe to eat before you chow down.

Panfish are tasty as fuck when they're fresh.

i would never pee in my waders, first off they're neoprene and pee is bad for neoprene (specifically the ammonia) and secondly, the motorcycle ride would be wet and unpleasant, and thirdly, i'd have to do laundry and take a shower after every fishing trip instead of my usual hobo bath
>>
>>1032316
What kind of reel? Every reel has its own reason for tangles.
Baitcasters tangle up because the reel keeps spinning after the lure stops moving. The solution is to stop the spool (with your thumb) just as the bait hits the water.
Spinning and spincast reels tangle up because the line gets twisted when it wraps onto the spool. As this line twist accumulates, it forms tangles and wind knots that catch on other things and fuck up your life. The way to deal with these is to wind the line onto your reel in the same direction it came off of the spool, wind your line under tension, and occasionally take the time to untwist your line if you use lures that twist a lot, like inline spinners and spoons.
>>
>>1031883

fairly new angler here. went out and bought a bunch of lures to use on my spinning rod for trout fishing. a lot of them are small and light and I can't cast them very far. this is a problem for me as I can only fish from the shore. is there anything I can do to cast these further? add some sinkers without screwing up the swim patterns or vibrations?

the lures I'm using are rapala floating minnows, panther martins, and blue foxes.
>>
>>1032341
Thank you anon!
I'm using my uncle's setup, because he has like 8, and I'm pretty sure it's a spinning/spincast. So in order to wind the line on, do I have to take it off first? Thanks in advance!
>>
>>1032474
The lures you've got are too light for your fishing pole to throw properly. You need to either get heavier lures or a lighter rod to throw them properly.

Look on the underside of your rod just above the handle. Your rod should have a line rating, but sometimes it will also have a lure weight rating. This is the range of weights that it will throw the farthest.
Your fishing rod works like a slingshot, bending when you bring it forward and snapping forward when you let the lure go. That snapping action shoots your lure toward, giving you much more distance that you would otherwise get without it.
The thing is, it only happens in a sweet spot of lure weights. When the lure is too light, the rod doesn't bend enough during casting to give you much of a boost. If it's too heavy, the rod does not have enough energy to propel the lure very far when it snaps back straight; if the lure is much too heavy, the rod itself can snap during casting.

If It's just a general purpose rod rated for 8-12lb test, 1/4 oz is about the smallest lure weight you want to run to get decent casting distance.

>>
>>1032474
Get a longer rod and a lighter rod. Make sure your lures are within the optimal weight range of the rod. And go long as you can get. A 8' rod is going to cast further than a 6' rod.
>>
>>1032479
It depends-how old is the line? If Uncle says he just restrung it, you're good. If it been awhile or he can't remember, you should take it all off, buy new line and respool.
Years old, dried out mono is awful to cast, loves to tangle up and tends to break at the wrong time for no particular reason.
You'll be much better off spending $10 on good mono and respooling.

>>
>>1032619
If you need to run your reel in reverse for a bit they're handy.
I use it the most when I'm untangling line. That way I can let some tension off without going all the way into freespool by opening the bail.

Going to bring this stuff for a spinning setup as well. Debating if I want to go with spinning gear to start to see if I can find them first to get my confidence up so I don't feel like I'm casting at nothing all day. Think that little worm would work?
>>
>>1032692
i'd open by catching a trout either on that worm or on the spinner, then look to the wooly bugger, and how i would say to fish it is put it under a foam hopper, then dead drift it, and at the end of the drift let it swing.
basically
>huge foam grasshopper pattern
>a good bit down a wooly bugger
>cast 6-10 feet infront of a rock
>dead drift past the rock
>at the end of the drift, let the fly swing away
>give it a single strip and a short pause
>recast to give the same rock another drift
and dont get too sedentary, if after 6 drifts a rock hasnt produced move to the next, its not got active fish on it.
>>
>>1032692

It means you're going to be driving a hell of a lot and she's looking to nail you down with a kid, but wants to get the traveling in before she "forgets" to pack her BC on the flight over the pond.

Looking to start a heavy musky setup. If I'm only throwing up to two ounce lures (usually 3/4 to 1.5 oz size) what pound test braid should I get?

For panfish it's hard to beat a size 8, 10, or 12 Chernobyl ant or other small terrestrial, and they're super easy to fish since they're topwater. Otherwise, for dry flies it's hard to beat any of the Adams variants.

For wet flies any nymph/emerger/scud works well. My go-to is a Copper John.

If you have big panfish in your area or smaller SMB or crappie you can do okay on SMALL streamers, like the Sweeney Todd and the Bugz.

And of course wooly buggers will catch anything that swims.
