Any tips for what lures to try in Lake Erie this weekend?

Black Max? And 30lb?! That has to be braid. 10lb-20lb mono should be straight on that, otherwise like 15lb-40lb braid. Maybe they said the 10lb was too light because you are targeting big fish? But if that's the case and you're going for 20lb+ fish, you want a heavier rod and reel.

That is a freshwater drum, aka a gaspergou, white perch, sheepshead, and a hundred other colloquial terms. Related to the popular saltwater sportfish red drum and speckled trout.

They're opportunist feeders, and while most people catch them while bottom fishing with shrimp, crawfish, or worms, they also regularly eat smaller fish.

Are there any western Washington anglers here?

If so, any tips on trout fishing? I've been using an egg sinker, bead, #10 and soon egg from shore but not much luck. I like to fish between 6 and 9 AM.

>>1029723
They tear up bass rigs and generally make a nuisance of themselves.

They earned the nicknames "tackle thrasher" and "hammer handle" for a reason.
>>
>>1029691
Float fish with worms or corn as bait, or a live minnow or shrimp. Even little chunks of mackerel or sprat will catch trout. Rig should go (from the bottom up)

-Hook (size 6)
-Hook-length (18 inches)
-Swivel
-Drilled bullet sinker or other sinker
-Float, simply threaded on and left free to slide
-Bead
-Sliding stop knot

Slide the knot up and down the line to adjust depth, cast out and wait. Float fishing is good because baits off the bottom are more visible.
Google sliding float rig to see how to tie sliding stop knot, as well as general setup.
>>
>>1029726
>>1029723
they're fun when youre targeting them
>>
>>1029723
Plenty of people here cherish them. Bassheads however dont like them because
1. it's not a bass
2. it competes with bass's habitat
3. it sometimes cuts their line
4. they cant lip them
in that order
>>
>>1029735
Oh absolutely. Problem is, lots of people don't want to target them for various reasons.

For example, where I live. Missouri. We HAVE them, in a couple bigger lakes, but the habitat is wrong (water's too warm) and as such you'll never catch one over about 24" and you're commonly catching 12-18" ones. Nothing ruins your day like throwing a $5-10 crank for the LMB in the area and you keep losing them to half-pound sets of teeth.

Hell I've caught 12" pike that had THREE different cranks stuck in their mouths plus my lure on 4 separate occasions.

I'm really digging this Skeleton V2. It throws 1/16oz jigheads with a paddle tail great. And it absolutely launches anything over 1/8oz. I didn't catch anything with it, but I did snag a lure and the backbone feels solid.

Also caught this guy, AND a tree that my line got tangled up in.

The friend girl caught a little dink with the light rod and various pan fish. She hooked into a 2-3lb bass with the little rod and lost him in a brush pile. I was trying to tell her to tighten the drag and use the rod to move the fish, but she was caught up in the moment.

>>1029660
Yes it's fine. The 30/lb was certainly braid, there's no way 140 yards of 30# mono will fit on a black max.

Yeah mostly use them like jigs, but if the fish are really active and attack anything that moves then you can just straight up throw them out and reel them back without too much more action. Good spoons have a great presentation on their own.

>>
>>1029802
Honestly as long as you're just experimenting with different hooks on them they'll work. I don't know if I'd trust them long-term though.
>>
>>1029802
Also, i want to add that if you never fish spoon before, you should just buy 1-2 good brand one to try out and at least have confidence with them. You would at least have a template of knowing how one should work and run. You would learn how to work them and how. They are durable as fuck and if you use braid, you can bend the hook if you get snagged easily. It's much better than spending money to get a dozens that you have no idea of the quality and you might lose confidence in them and never use spoon again. That many would just bloat your tackle box.

Maybe once you are proficient enough, you can buy cheap pack like that and be able to hand pick ones that would work by experience.

Here's a good intro piece with the various types and methods
http://www.in-fisherman.com/gear-accessories/how-to-catch-fish-using-spoons/

For more in-depth and advanced tactics, this is a good article, with lots more articles on spoons available on the website.
https://www.bassresource.com/fishing/5-ways-spoons.html

I just caught my first-ever fish on a spoon-the nice Redear sunfish I posted in the last thread-on a small dardevle clone like pic related. I was fishing it behind a snap swivel at about 3/4 the speed I usually fish a rooster tail, if that helps. Just enough to get the action going. Nothing fancy about my retrieve-I just cast it out and reel it straight in.
>>
>>1029828
Not if you turn your drag down.
>>
>>1029836
even ith 15+lbs of drag they will rip 30 yards of line in a few seconds
i have stronger hooks this time though

I was actually trying to catch bluegill tho...

Just that particular lake normally produces fairly big 'gills (for my area). Pic related came out of there yesterday.
>>
VMC vs Mustad vs Gamakatsu? Anyone have a preference?
>>
>>1029839
There's a reason you have 100+ yards of line on a reel...

I've been spooled exactly 3x in my entire fishing career, every time by hooking a fish species I wasn't fishing for on tackle wayyyyy too small for what I hooked. Twice with grass carp and once with a shark.
>>1029844
Owner, and if I can't get those then Gamakatsu. Then my order of preference goes Eagle Claw Laser Sharp then VMC then Gamiki then chinkshit from Amazon then regular Eagle Claw *then* Mustad.
>>
>>1029847
ive got 200-250 on my 4k, the isue is theres lots and lots of cover the carp go right for the second they spook, be it into a tree, or around a bunch of rocks have to try to keep them out of the cover
>>
>>1029839
So fight them for a bit to tire them out then use a net to land them.
Think about it: you're using hooks and line both rated at about 30lbs to try and catch a 40lb fish. You're not going to be able to just horse them in that way. You already tried that before, it didn't work.

The fish will tire out eventually, then you'll be able to bring it in and land it.
>>
>>1029850
Then you need a heavier rig to really horse them around.

If you've got the disposable income, go buy a cheap catfish combo with a spinning reel and spool it with either 50 or 65lb Power Pro. Crank the drag down as tight as it will go and don't worry about it (drags on cheap combo spinning reels are usually utter shit), and just bully the carp with it.
>>
>>1029853
im planning on bullying them tomorrow with y 4k, i have drag locked down, and despite it being smooth il palm it to add more preasure 40 lb power pro should hold up pretty well
>>
>>1029853
>>1029854
i could bring my 9 ft surf rod with 50 lb power pro, but i feel like thats overkill for now

How long did it take you guys to get comfortable with using a baitcaster? I know it's the way to go for fishing bass and catfish in my area but it's been a week and I still feel all clunky. I practice everyday
>>
>>1029844
Owner is good but too expensive
Gamakatsu is pretty good as well and a little cheaper
Vmc is decent enough and also minimum I'm willing to spend on hooks. They are well-priced and I never have issues with them. I just don't find enough variety of them in shop near me.
Eagle claw Trokar is weird because they are too thicc with triangle points and really tear up soft plastic and the fish's mouth
Regular eagle claw is absolute trash and will rust and dull after each use

I haven't tried much mustad stuff
>>
>>1029856
About an hour.
>>1029858
I can usually find Owner EWG's on clearance because nobody likes cutting-point hooks (same complaint with Trokars). I can usually find them cheaper than Gama Superlines, but not quite as cheap as Gama regular EWG's when in the 25pks.

Variety is an issue with most of them, yes. I'm pretty much stuck using VMC football jigs and shakey heads.
>Strike King for structure jigs and swimbait heads ftw
Yes, regular Eagle Claw is shit. Mustad has always been worse for me.

Gamiki doesn't make offset worm hooks but they make some of the GOAT circle hooks and fly hooks. They're my go-to for nose-hooked flukes and drop shotting, I can get 50 packs of #1's for like $9. Daiichi is probably a little higher quality but doesn't make "big" hooks (they cap at like a size 6 streamer hook).
>>
>>1029856
Roughly a day to train your thumb. Setting the hook and reeling I choke up on the reel.

Smallies and sunfish, baby. It's like they've got little dog syndrome or some kind of napoleon complex. They'll bite anything and I love'em for it. Also, what kind of worm is that?

>>1029630
I run 14 lb fluoro on my bmax2 for skirted jigs but for most of my low-pro baitcasters it's 12 lb, either mono or fluoro if I want the line to sink.

>>1029723
Already been said but it's bassholes mostly. Same reason pickerel ("snot rockets") get a bad rap. I fish for anything that bites, bass included, and am happy with whatever tugs on my worm.

>>1029750
I use the rod from a $30 combo I picked up close to 20 years ago and it'll be a sad day when it finely gives. Sometimes chrap works and works well.

>>1029772
>>1029777
They make "weedless spoons" with fixed hooks and wire weed guards like on weedless wacky hooks. Though I've never fished any spoons to say how well they work.

Hmm, gotta go pilfer some more mint from the garden. Juleps don't make themselves ... I do declare.

appreciate the advice - found a video on the sliding float rig. Going to save this and try it next time im out there.

Interesting though, I dont normally hear much about float fishing. I was under the impression that even a slight breeze will just push the line back at you and cause irreversible slack.

sorry to be a noob, can someone tell me how fake worms work? i tried them once and just got a huge rats nest with my spinning rod, not enough weight i think. i'm supposed to use them like a lure, where i throw them out and then reel them in right? or just throw them out and let them sit? do i need to get an ultralight rod or something so i can actually cast it with such little weight?
>>
>>1029886
A few things line rod length, line test and such could've caused your problems. Weightless is cetainly one way to rig a worm, and steady retrieve or letting it set are both valid ways to fish them. Classic rigging, aside from weightless, would include Texas and Carolina rigging. Those both employ bullet weights. The former keeps the worm on the bottom while the latter keeps it floating just above, and both can be rigged loosely with a bead that'll smack the weight for some added noise when the rod is raised. Newer, or recently more poplar rigging includes drop shot and shaky head. Drop shots are more for vertical fishing and targetting a specific depth. Shaky head jigs are designed to keep the worm upright and allow a little more wobble while it's sitting on the bortom. A lot of soft plasting manufacturers are making worms with buoyant tails just for that kind of technique.
>>
>>1029886
get a medium fast-action spinning rod and some light braided line. it definitely helps in casting lighter lures far.

you can work a worm different ways. you can definitely keep the worm sitting if there is some current but it's usually better to work the worm someway. with texas rigs, i usually drag it along the bottom, swim it, or pop it up a couple of times, let it sink to the bottom, reel in slack, pause, then repeat. i switch techniques if the fish aren't biting.

Line I'm using. Cheap and kinky.
>>
>>1029926
>>1029925
It's probably the line man. If you want cheap line P line makes a cheap copolymer that's like 5 or 6 bucks a 300 yard spool and works great. Comes in a green package. That or get Berkley xl smooth cast mono.

Also not to reel bash but try to get something like a Shimano sienna or Sahara. Or a pflueger president.

50ish bucks to 80 bucks makes a big deal in quality difference and casting ability. If you can't afford a reel try to get something budget from a big name like Shimano or Daiwa or Abu garcia. Avoid Shakespeare and zebco.

Immediate fix is probably better line and a lower pound test. Like 8lb test is all you need probably and it casts better on spin gear.
>>
>>1029925
Your spool is also undefiled a bit but the line is on there super loose too. Looks like a birds nest waiting happen.
>>
>>1029930
Thanks, I'm just going to spool the 8lb line that came with it back on. Do you know if 8lb is good for catfish?
>>
>>1029931
Hily hell Just noticed that's 30lb mono on there. That's your problem. For catfish I would get like 12 pound mono or 15 lb but get Berkley xl smooth cast. If it's for big flat head you need a better reel and different set up.

8 to 15 pound line for channel cats and smaller flat head is totally fine. Get a better line.

30lb is for bigger conventional reels.
>>
>>1029925
Put more line on it. It's supposed to go all the way near top

Better alternative is to trash it and to get a better reel and line. Don't you have $40-50 lying around for a decent reel and a 300 yard of standard trilene line?
>>
>>1029925
>>1029926
Also, that line is way too heavy for that reel. Look at the number on the reel for reel capacity. It looks like it goes from 8-12 lb for mono filament. You are putting 30 lb mono on that reel. You manage to under fill it somehow. Do you have like only 50 yards of line spooled or something?

>>

If you see a number like 200/8,170/10 etc from the reel, it means that the reel can take 200 yd of 8 lb mono or 170 yd of 10lb mono. Typically you want to get line within that number labeled on the reel. Braid is a different story since they are relatively new compared to mono and not all companies have labeling for braids yet. Only shimano might have it so far

>Probably the only way to get a carp on the fly
it is, and you can get them on dry flies on rare occasions, but yeah, the standard fly-fishing technique for carp is cruise some "freshwater flats" looking for a carp with his nose in the mud, flicking a fly and dropping it on his nose, then slowly crawling it past him hoping for a take
its a really hard fish to target on fly (but like anything you can catch it by accident fly fishing)

Plastic worms can be a whole universe unto themselves, so it's not surprising that you're kind of lost.
But first things first: the rats nest you got in our reel was probably not due to the worm. Something you had been fishing earlier had put a lot of twist into the line, and it knotted in the reel. There just wasn't enough weight to the plastic worm to straighten it all back out.

But speaking of fishing techniques, there are a million of them. One of the old guys who taught me how to fish swore by a standard, cheap Walmart lure point-exposed rigging with the hook a little further down the body than normal, so it created a little humpback. He would cast it out and fish it SLOW. I fished his rig, and it produced.
But there's all sorts of ways to rig them to do what you want, pic related and so much more. One of my favorite ways is to put a jighead on a paddletail worm. I've caught more bass on that than I can count.

Also if you're going for bass n shit, what is your soft plastic collection like? I used to basically only run Rapalas and spinners and I could never catch anything in the summer until these cunts taught me about the Texas rig.

What everyone else said. Line is WAY too heavy for that reel. That reel wants to see 10lb test. 30lb will just cause all sorts of problems.
Also whatever line you do end up using-even if it's cheapshit-fill it all the way up to the top of the spool. Your reel will work worlds better with a full spool than the half-empty one you've got now.

I'm not going to dump on your reel's brand name. Zebco reels will serve you just fine if you're just doing stuff in fresh water.

That's straight. If you really want to know what you need more of, just try different variants of shit that works well for you now. Or get down on MTB or LTB and see what works.

Do you have any regular poppers? The Rapala Skitter Pops are my favorite poppers, the brown frog color has caught me way more than any topwater. Also maybe some hollow body frogs to run thru thick weeds.

One more thing, I see lots of worms and flukes, but what about creature baits? The Zoom Lizards work really well.
>>
>>1030057
And with all those Zoom flukes, I suggest next pack you buy, go with the "Swimmin" ones. Those paddle tails with a weighted swimbait hook are really diverse and you can run them a bunch of different ways in all different situations. The paddle tail ones always produce better for me than the split tail regular flukes since they have more action. The Strike King KVD Swim'n Caffeine Shads have caught me a lot of fish and Baby Bass is a good color. They are slightly smaller than Super Flukes and a little larger than the Super Fluke Jrs and for some reason they just work better. Plus the hook stays in them better if you rig em weedless with an offset EWG or swimbait hook.

Beautiful weather here in NY today. Gunna go spend some time moving more bass into the big pond today. Will posts pics if am successful

>>1029772
We used weedless spoons a ton when we were in Quebec. The action is exactly the same but the hook up ratio is obviously much worse. They replace the treble hook with a fixed single hook that has a fixed piece of wire running the length of the spoon and hovers just above the tip of the hook.
>>1029856
I struggled a lot. Genuinely probably took me a few weeks. I was the first one out of all of the fisherman around me that had one and this was long before I started posting here. It got to the point were I would spool on just enough line for a good distance cast and go over to the ponds and sling baits for hours with no intention of catching fish, just casting. I went through so much line with terrible birds nests that I was too frusturated to spend the time getting out. I found that one of the most important aspects is the motion of your cast. You can't just heave it like a spinning reel you have to have a smooth and linear swing with your elbow tucked against your body. Now I can turn all but one brake off with my spool tension at a minimum and chuck frogs/spoons/jerbaits/etc. as far as my rod will let me. It's definitely worth getting into since the benifits are very clear once you learn. When we were in Quebec I was throwing the same spoon as every one else and I would throw perfect casts 95% of the time while everyone else, using spinning gear, would regularly throw it short, or too far and get snagged on rock/branches.
>>
>>1030057
>no lizards

I am shook anon

>>1030061
Interesting. I was just gonna bring the UL but maybe I'll bring a regular rod too.

>>1030065
>Now I can turn all but one brake off
For centrifugal or magnetic? Ive always read with centrifugal brakes if you're gonna have one on the one opposite of it needs to be on too. I mean obviously if it works don't change anything I'm just curious.
>>
>>1029790
I fish in rivers mostly and spoons are a valuable tool. I find a school of bait fish in deeper water towards the top of the water and choose a spoon close to the size of them and just drop it down on a drop shot rig. It looks like a dying baitfish falling from the group and if there's any bass lurking underneath them they swarm on it.

I don't use them often because I don't really spend my days riding around looking for large schools of baitfish, but when I find one I always throw spoons out and catch something.
>>
>>1029856
It's just preference and mostly marketing and consumerism. There was a bass tournement last Sunday at the lake I frequent and the winner had nothing but spinning gear.

I've been catching catfish in big rivers since I was a little kid and you don't need those big heavy saltwater rods and baitcasting reels. We use $50 Ugly Stik combos and 20lb mono or 30lb braid and have brought in at least 100 over 50lb in the last 10 years.

Fishing is a lot like golf. You can buy a cheap Walmart set of clubs and go golfing. Buying a $30, $300, or $3,000 set won't make you any better or worse at golf. Same goes with fishing. You can buy a $20 Walmart combo or $200 in a decent rod and reel, but it doesn't have any effect on your fishing IQ, skill, or general luck at catching bigger fish in general.

I did it out, I caught 2 trout.

It was actually really sloppy because both fish conveniently fell right off the hook right as they were over the dock.

I got the ONE3 By 13 Fishing Origin A Casting Reel 6.6:1 GR and the No.8 Tackle BlackOut Casting Rod 7' Med Hvy from Tackle Warehouse.

I've mostly been fishing soft plastics weightless , texas, and carolina rigged on an Ugly Stik combo in ponds and lakes from the bank.

Did I fuck up? I was thinking of getting the 7'6" to cat further but it's a 1 piece and wouldn't fit in my car.
>>
>>1030329
Unless you're consistently fishing deep water or heavy grass a MH might be a bit stiff. But it's a damn good rod.
>>
>>1030341
I fish in along of small rivers and creeks with a ton of timber structure.
>>
>>1030342
Then yeah a MH is probably good for ya.

I definitely need creature baits. I have paddle tails. Just got a bunch of craws.

Every spinning reel is basically the same design. Those Gander Mtn reels supposedly aren't too bad, and they could be assmbled by Pure Fishing (Abu, Pflueger, Mitchell, ets) so with those cork handles and shit it looks nice for $40.

>>1030295
Kek, I'll keep shilling. But I do better with the paddle tails if I'm using a swimbait hook and actually swimming them. For drop shots or carolina rigs, go with the split tails. But if I'm doing a Texas or Carolina rig on the bottom, I have always done better with a worm or creature bait than flukes.

>>1030329
That 7' will be straight as long as it doesn't break the first time you use it. Those Blackout rods feel nice but so many people have QC issues. But if you fish from shore a lot, you might want to get used to the 7' and maybe 7'3" before going longer. Only thing I would change is going faster than 6.6:1 but it's not a big deal. Did you go right retrieve or left retrieve?

My first two casting reels were 6.4 and right hand and the 3rd one was 7.1 and left and after getting that I wish I had done the same for my first two. Whoever came up with the R/L thing on casting reels was retarded because if you grew up with spinning reels it def makes more sense to get a lefty casting reel. Otherwise you have to switch hands after you cast and cranking just feels awkward

>tfw little bro moved to Orlando today and so many little lakes and ponds around but no fishin pole

Redpill me on lizards. Why use them when I could use a brush hog, especially since the brush hogs come in a greater variety of colors and sizes.
>>
i see swarms and swarms of flies on the river where i fish

shouldn't this make fish more active? or are they too stuffed to go after my lures
>>
>>1030366
Bass rarely bother with shit as small as flies, so I doubt it will effect fishing for them one way or another. The bluegill and other sunfish are ravenous regardless, and that would be a good indicator to fish topwater or shallow shit for them. Other species I'm not sure on.

Interesting. On my reels with braid I usually keep the magnetic brakes off or really low and have the two centrifugal brakes. I tried doing all the brakes off of one my rods with flouro and that didn't end well lol.

>>1030329
>7' 6"

It's a good thing you didn't. I have one and it's a very stout rod. It's great for flipping and punching, but the 7' MH is just about perfect for what you'll be doing.

>>1030363
Better action imo. I like brush hogs for flippin, but if I'm casting to cover or just along a bank I like the little legs and long curly tail more than the brush hog.

Ok I'm pretty fucking confused right now.

I just got back from a county park. I found a....well, a CLUSTERFUCK of a "rig".
>snag some fishing line
>horse it in
>giant 2.25" diameter plastic bobber clipped upside-down to what had to have been 35lb mono, with a couple dozen feet of line tangled in a snarl above the bobber
>2 feet down the line is a quarter-ounce "bass casting" sinker held on with a lark's head knot
>2 more feet down the line is a 2oz pyramid sinker, also held on with a lark's head knot
>4" below that is a 3-way swivel
>on one branch of the 3-way swivel is the biggest snap swivel I've ever seen, it's easily 5-6x the size of my #1 catfish swivel (250lb test), and another 2oz pyramid sinker
>the other branch has a ~6" leader of really light mono, probably 6lb, then an Eagle Claw crappie rig, replete with its #1 aberdeen hooks
>tied on the bottom of the crappie rig is another 10 feet of line, then a third 3-way swivel
>one branch of the swivel has a ~4" loop of 550 cord with 3, 1oz bank sinkers strung on it attached with a ~#2 snap (no swivel) on the end of more of the ~35lb mono
>the other end has another 6 feet of the ~6lb mono with the single biggest aberdeen hook I've seen tied to the end. I'm not even comfortable guessing at the size, it's nickel plated and extends from my wrist joint to well beyond my outstreched fingers when laid in my palm, probably 10" long from eyelet to bend and I can stick the entirety of my pinky finger through the eye, and hooked on it is 2 unopened cans of Copenhagen
This pond is, at its deepest point, about 12 feet deep, and has a surface area of about 3.5 acres. The rig from the bobber to the cans of Cope was over 20 feet long. There's no current, I have NO idea why whoever was fishing this had just shy of 3/4ths of a pound of lead on the thing. This is in central Missouri, so they don't even have the excuse of "well the nearby river has big flatheads" for the humongous fucking hook.
>>
>>1030433
I'm actually most baffled about how they got it all in the water in one go.

I'm envisioning some drunk redneck with a Tigershark rod twirling around like he's doing the Olympic hammer throw to sling that the 8 feet off the bank I snagged it.

Pond hopped all after noon. Ended up at my buddy's, buddy's house where he has a massive pond that was loaded with large mouth. When we got there the sun was just starting to set and we could see them in the pads smaking stuff on the surface all over. I must have had 100+ blow ups on my frog but only hooked 4. I didn't think to start throwing a buzzbait in the open area until it was almost dark but I still managed to catch on literally every single cast with it. Most of them dinks but a fish is a fish. My buddy and I have made plans to return to that pond with my two kayaks and we are going to each buy a thing of worms and sit out on the water jigging worms under bobbers while we drink all day. Should be a good time. Apparently there is a good population of crappie in there so maybe I can finally catch my first one.

>>
>>1030752
If you aren't catching fish, you might be doing something wrong.
>>
>>1030752
Either you're not catching fish or your gear is fucking up (birds' nests, getting hung up in trees, etc).
>>
Were can I find fishing groups of such things exist?
>>
>>1030752
Im a yearling, so here are some of my personal protips that ive learned.
Have your drag set low, fish only need a pound of pressure to set a hook. To high and you might end up bending hooks, ripping the hook out of a fish's mouth, or going past your line breaking point (which could be a lot lower if you have a fray in your line or some other flaw)
Watch your reel for knots. I always reel in making sure the line is tight. Although it's pretty automatic for me now. Whenever I cast, after i flip my bail back on, I pull my rod up as a quick way to tighten the line.
Sometimes you need to really work your lures slowly.
>>
>>1030760

>>1030763

>>1030764
oh I see. So like beginner things. Ive never done it but maybe hiring a guide? Around me you hire a guide for taking a float trip down a river, something for people that already know how to fish but need a lil help with directions.

It's something you ought to do yourself. Dont be afraid to just watch others fish. Just dont be tossing your line side by side to them. Put your rod down and just chat it up with them. Ive gotten loads of info by just coming across some people and saying hi, typically THEY are the ones that are just eager to talk about fishing.
>>
i got like 20 bites today on my dropshot but nothing took the hook

was my bait too big? or maybe the hook was too big?

I was using one of the gulp minnows
>>
>>1030768

Also you probably had bluegill fucking with it. There's a reason literally none of my bass lures have chartreuse on them any more.
>>
>>1030717
>try to catch river trout with little swim jigs

>>
>>1030768
Ive had lil minnows try and wrestle with various lures. Like I'll throw it into a pool and 8 minnows will pack up and follow my lure, occasionally biting it.
The same happens with sunnies like bluegill that will actually take a hold of your lure and run a bit. Even small hooks dont hook them at times. Id downside the hook. What size gulp minnows?
>>
>>1030769
size 2 dropshot hook

I'm gonna buy some smaller ones and maybe some smaller baits
>>
>>1030734
You can have success with anything. There's no exact science to fishing. My PB was a super fluke hanging out in the water while pulling out a piece of tree bark in the spool of my spinning reel.
>>
>>1030770
Smallies dominate these rivers but ive had and heard of some largemouth too.
The trout here are mostly stocked, but in the headwaters there are some nice wild ones, but then the bass fishing is bad. I ought to fish the boundary between the two but it might be private property.

>>1030768

>>
>>1030774

>>
>>1030775
Native stream trout in the national forest about a hour away are fucking badass. They're the smartest fish I've seen. You aren't going to catch them soaking power bait or salmon eggs. And they spook easily. They'll be 100 yards down stream by the time you reach the bank after hearing your car pull up. I've thrown a rock in the water and seen them scattering before the rock even hit the water.
>>
>>1030776
a three inch lure wont fit very well in a lil bluegill's mouth.
If you just want to nail those dudes for a while, put on a small 1/32-1/16th jig (something with a small hook, like a trout magnet jig) and put a lil piece of plastic on it. Toss it out and let it drop like a pendulum on a tight line, then pick it up and let it drop again. Or just do drop shot anything works for them
>>
>>1030778
My all-time biggest fish was me being bored AF on my grandpa's dock in clearwater.

I had my bluegill rig and was trying to learn how to fish a buzzbait. Some 2ft long jack-looking fish came of and slammed it, ended up being a 20 minute fight despite it being only a ~8lb fish cuz my bluegill rod's reel can only do like 2lbs of drag pressure.

My dad's birthday is coming up and he won't use anything but a Zebco, so instead of trying to change his mind I wanna get him the best zebco .What should I get him? Hes got rods so i was looking at a real under $150. I stopped using zebcos when I was 13, so I'm out of touch on them

I just bought my first baitcaster and it's left handed even though I am right handed. The whole switching hands shit looks really inefficient, I'd rather use my right hand to set the hook and feather line, while my stupid hand cranks the real.

Anybody here use artificial lures to catch trout in stocked lakes and ponds?

I go trout fishing every Saturday morning and I get kind of bored of just sitting there chain smoking while soaking power baits catching little 6-8" trout.

Are trout lures only for streams or would they work in ponds too?

First off unlike squids they tend to attack the flanks of the egi lure thus you need to actively await for the attack and jerk the lure properly for them to get hooked. Further more much like squids as soon as they get hooked its a battle of speed vs finese as they start rolling and you want to reel them in but because you usualy have them by their soft tentacles that are quite easy to get torn off and thus for the cuttle fish to go free you need to tire it before getting it out of the water
>>
>>1030827
You did the right thing kid. It's much better imo to use your dominant hand to work the rod rather than waste it on cranking the reel. You'll lose a fish much more to working it poorly with the rod rather than the reel-in.
Also, plz no traps

>Spend the entirety of last weekend on Google Maps marking potential new fishing spots, ponds, lakes, etc.
>spend 2 tanks of gas and the entirety of this weekend going to check out spots
>most of them were private property and got threatened with guns twice
>the ones where I got to fish at I caught nothing

It sucks living hours from any decent fishery. I just want a decent bank spot I can catch bass/catfish from after work without having to drive 1-2 hours.

I haven't snagged mine yet. Throwing around rocks and hydrilla. No problems here.
>>
>>1030881
I've snagged and lost two, both to yonka pads.

But that's still pretty fucking good considering how many hundreds of hours I've thrown one into the shittiest cover in the lake.

Why are spinners so expensive wtf
>>
>>1030767
So much this.
Give them a compliment or two and most people will tell you everything they know.
Also, frequent the local stores that aren't major places like Dick's or Bass Pro. If they have a small selection of stuff, they'll only sell the stuff that moves-which ends up being what actually catches fish in the area.

Here's how it went down for me:
>putting in a canoe at 10am
>see old guy coming out with a pile of fat panfish
>MAN THOSE ARE SOME NICE FISH! I-is that a limit?! I can't seem to catch any! How'd you do that?
>well I just take this here jig (shows little 2" blue and white grub jig tied to 5ft of line dangling from a long crappie pole) and run it round the stumps-you know right by where that crick comes into the lake?
>upstream there a little on the right?
>yep right there. There's some stumps in there.
>I've seen them
>I just take the jig, get right by a stump and then bounce it a little by the side of the stump then let it drop.
>how many do you get that way?
>3 or 4 off of each one.
>off of EACH STUMP?!
>Mhm. There's some of them little spinners too-
>You mean the little white ones or the beetle spins?
>The white ones. I like them too. But I use those jigs most of the time.
>well thanks, I'll be trying those out! See you later!
>see you around.

Lo and behold, within a week I go from catching nothing to 15-20 per fishing trip.

So they can sponsor KVD and that Bass Pro NASCAR

And if you actually take their advice and try what they suggest and they see it, they will normally tell you even more.

>mfw everyone here hates talking to other fisherman and actively lie to each other as to ensure they don't catch any fish

I mean I do it to so I don't get upset about it. Kinda funny actually
>>
>>1030942
It depends where I am and what kind of mood I'm in. Also the type of person. If somebody like me comes along, dude who goes and casts lures at local places a couple times a week, I'm normally cool with them. But minorities who want to keep everything, casuals who just crowd the place on weekends, and overly serious boomers, they can fuck themselves and I just tell em there's nothing but bluegill in the lake.

I just got finished taking one of my best friends out fishing with worms at a local lake.
Story time

>best friend wants to come up and spend time
>casually suggest we can go fishing
>he agrees
>arrives and admits he's not a fisherman at all, hasn't been in years and doesn't own a rod.
>knew this already, and was prepared to do easy mode fishing.
>had rigged up two of my poles with bobbers, hooks and worms and headed out to the impound lake in my development.
>gave him a spinning rod and showed him how to cast it,
>grabbed my old crappie rod with an ancient baitcaster on it.
>Spend 2-1/2 hours fishing yesterday
>and nearly 2 hours today
>just casting out, letting worms soak, bullshitting about life and pulling in dinks.
>He outcatches me 2 to 1
>not jealous at all.
>He's going through a rough patch in his life and needed to win a little.
>He won this weekend.

Now he's talking about getting a little fishing pole of his own and going fishing on his own.

Mission accomplished.
Dink bluegill are a national treasure.
