problem is they are ambush predators - if you can see one, it doesn't want to fuck with you. if the animal actually wanted to engage with you you'd likely be dead before you knew what was happening

It's entirely possible, but the DNR is retarded sometimes.
There were regular sightings and mauled dogs for like 15 years before they admitted they might possibly be kind of wrong a little.
The DNR thinks they're either escaped/released pets or are moving east from the Dakotas.

young ones sometimes fuck it up. older ones don't fuck with humans to begin with. if you run or go fast you can trigger chase instinct tho.
>>
>>1023538
>This is why cyclists are more common targets than hikers. They are more similar to deer when it comes to posture.
wrong it's the speed they trigger the predatory instinct. a cougar is more likely to attack you if you run away then if you stand your ground. prey runs away.

That's the same goddamn thing they did in Michigan.
"I seent a cougar I sware 2 gahd"
"Nah it was a deer. "
>>
>>1023660
Missouri also did the same thing with feral pigs in the 90's, then again with Russian Blue boars in the early 2000's, asian carp in the Missouri River, fuck even bobcats in the 70's (which are now so prevalent archery hunters are asked to shoot them all on sight).

I swear to Christ our department of conservation is run by a bunch of contrarian asses. There's no way they could be that wrong consistently without doing it on purpose.
>>
>>1023662
At this rate you'll have wolf packs running around in broad daylight .
>>
>>1023660
Part of the reason they deny it is because people get their panties all in a bunch about mountain lions. "Oh it's going to kill my livestock/dog/children/chance at happiness/etc do something about it!"

Or they make wild claims like there are large black pumas wandering the woods.
>>
>>1023769
But you're right, state fish and game can really have their heads shoved way far up their own asses.
>>
>>1023544
Why the heck did you call the authorities because you saw a wild animal in the wild?

>>1023657
This is very common in many states where mountain lions have returned after previously being wiped out. Most or all of the New England states don't acknowledge that mountain lions have returned, despite tracks and scat evidence, and occasional sightings. This is mostly because the fish and game depts. would have a shitload of work to do create conservation/management plans, alter state endangered species lists, perform wildlife surveys, create public info releases, etc. Mountain lions are reclusive, and sightings are rare enough that it's not really a problem, but everyone knows that mountain lions are around, and that fish and game is intentionally denying it.
>>
>>1023657
My neighbor shot and killed one and the DNR said it was a bobcat. He now has a stuffed lion which is cool.
>>
>>1023755
That's kinda the idea

>>1023281
*calls you a nice kitty*
*pets you on the head*
>>
>>1023803
>Why the heck did you call the authorities because you saw a wild animal in the wild?

Because in states where the DNR actually does their job, they like to hear about reclusive/rare/endangered/extinct animals and where they were spotted.
>>
>>1023475
You should listen to the Lebatard Show when they have Ron McGill on. Callers always ask him questions like this. Most people say that animals are better built to kill than humans and a 100lb predator would beat a human twice its weight easily. But the zookeeper often favors the humans as long as it isn't a suprise attack from behind. The human brain is a powerful defense mechanism.
>>
>people wonder why state DNR ignores cougar sightings
>State DNR funded a bunch by outdoor rec in state parks
>people will stop camping if muh mountain lions

no shit? I live in Marin and we are getting alot of encroachment problems. The Fairfax hills has a pack of coyotes that is just keep getting bigger and bolder. Now they are coming out in day time. bobcats too. The drought breaking hasn't helped as much as I thought it would.

i'm just saying they don't really feel pain like normal there have been instances when a man fought back and survived to tell the tale about how unrelenting the attack was and how completely the cougar ignored the pain and beating. they don't give a fuck best if you can avoid them seeing you as prey they are very careful and cautious until the fight starts.

>>
>>1033032
a cougar up front is not much of a problem for a grown man. i mean sure it can tear you up bad but it's definitely doable. the problem is it's habit to jump on you from behind and go straight for your spinal cord with it's teeth. basically it can kill you before you know what happened. if it fails to do that you have pretty good chances.
>>
>>1033305
You know how I know you've never been up close to a cougar in the wild?

>>

>>
>>1033399

>>
>>1033305
you're an idiot. the reason cougars aren't much of a problem for grown men is that they RARELY attack grown men, instead choosing to go for smaller prey. Seriously, if you're not a manlet, they aren't hunting you.

If one decides to kill you, you're done. From the front, the side, the back, spinal cord or no... you're done.
>>
>>1026064

>>
>>1033552
In a 1 on 1, gladiator arena type match I would put my money on the 1 million ants
>>
>>1033552
This is because big cats are actually really big pussies. Like I've been around "tamed" cougars and for the most part they are very timid and cautious, this is actually true of most predators since so many hunts end in failure and choosing prey that can wound them and reduce their hunting efficacy further is something they are programed to avoid. Not only do cougars rarely attack grown men, they rarely attack people in general. Often an unusual set of circumstances including the animals desensitization to humans and some sort of desperation (such as that caused by old age or territory encroachment) causes them to bother with people, though there is of course the rare opportunistic attack. Cougars are probably one of the least dangerous of the big cat family all in all, compare to say a tigers or even jaguars. Personally as a 186 cm male weighing 15 stone I don't really worry about cougars at all when I go /out/.

Now bears on the other hand I would worry about, especially the polar bears that occasionally wandered out of their range and into towns nearby where I lived back when I tried going /out/ up north. Those bastards are fucking fearless and will actively choose to predate humans. The more common brown bears we get at lower latitudes aren't as bad but they are still crazy SOBs who might decide to charge 100 meters in thirty seconds and maul you to death for looking at them the wrong way.
>>
>>1023475
You know, statistically you actually have a decent shot at winning.
The majority of cougar attacks on humans are actually unsuccessful, I've heard people quote around 20% fatality and from what I'm finding on the internet its likely even lower.
The thing about cougars is that they're ambush hunters that have millions of years of evolution telling them how to punce on and kill deer and shit, but comparitively little information about people. And they're really risk-averse. Unless they're starving or cornered, they'll almost alway try to escape any encounter that turns into a fight. They can always come back in a few hours and see if you've bled to death or go find something else to eat, but if they get unlucky and get one of their legs broken trying to finish you off they're as good as dead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RI_f0buRi2c&t=13s
There's an episode of one of Anthony Bourdain's shows where he goes here and eats at a picnic table with the bears.
Also murder cats are cutie kitties and should be reminded of such at every chance.
>>
>>1034546
You should probably look up how many bear fatalities there are in America. Hint: it's not many.
>>
>>1034546
>from the land of the infamous murder-machine drop bears
>complains about mere grizzlies and blackies
>>
>>1034546
unless youre really far from town most bears wont go fucking near you.

if you manage to surprise a mom and her cubs though you might be fucked.

most of the nasty wildlife died off long ago since moden human contact killed most of the untrammeled wanderers.
>>
>>1034546
is it true you are sposed to curl up in a ball if a grizzly or brown bear chases you, and if its a black bear you go on a rampage and start windmilling
>>
>>1028946

What really happened?

>unlikely to buy book
>still really want to know in some detail

Help me out?
>>
>>1034846
if it's a mother grizzly then run the fuck away that is what the bear wants if you can't for some reason lay down flat cover your neck and don't move or even breathe.

if it's not a mother grizzly chances are it's a predatory attack. large male black bears are especially suspect. fight for your life, with everything you got.
>>
>>1034846
Pretty much
Although the difference isn't technically what species, its the reason for the attack.
If they're attacking because they feel threatened or think you're threatening their cubs or something then playing dead is generally better than trying to fight it.
But if they're trying to eat you playing dead obviously won't work.
Also black bears are more skittish so acting scary is more likely to work than on a grizzly, because they know they don't really have anything to worry about unless you're also a grizzly, which you probably aren't

>>1034868
Running is generally a bad idea. Even if an encounter doesn't start predatory running can trigger a prey drive and turn it from "get out of my territory" to "get in my belly"
Keep facing it and back away, and avoid eye contact.
If the choice is fight or run obviously try running first though. The bear can probably outrun you but I'd wager most people's odds are better in a race than a fight.

The best defense is good situational awareness, backed up by a gun.
>>
>>1034875
>Running is generally a bad idea. Even if an encounter doesn't start predatory running can trigger a prey drive and turn it from "get out of my territory" to "get in my belly"
that's not how momma bears work all they care about is the threat to be gone. if it runs all the better. they chase you 20 steps and get back to the cubs they won't leave them behind.

If this is accurate there hasn't been a fatal attack in North America since 2008. Seems like a lot of the victims are also children 14 and under.
>>
>>1034546
Every animal species in North America combined kills fewer people a year combined than salties do in Australia.

Limit that just to the USA (including Alaska) and salties kill more people in 7 months than animals of all kinds do in a year in the US.

>no use in gouging the eyes

Except blinding it so it can't fuck you sideways with its claws and shit you moron. In a fight for your life always go for the eyes first. You're not fighting a fucking dolphin or a bat that can still easily detect you without eyes, blinding anything you fight instantly tips the scale massively

I also liked the bit about doing a kick to the gut of a midair cougar. You seem like a pretty cool guy. I would pay good money to watch you stomp wild animals.

Growing up in AZ I've seen a few mountain lions out and about, once on my friends property we found some cougar kittens up in a tree and gave them some pats. Looking back it was a really stupid decision. I grew up with dogs and hamsters, so I only understand their methodology. I wouldn't have stood a chance against a mountain lion.

Fuck the nerve, I'll just jack hammer the lens to hell and back like I jack hammer a girl during foreplay. Nerve might be protected but if it's attached to a mashed eyeball it ain't doing shit

>>
>>1035188

where the fuck did you get that? whiskers simply provide touch sensory input.
>>
>>1035286

>>

Helping it know where to bite =/= sensing the "blood vibrations"

Idiot

Also

>using tiger information when discussing cougars
>using seaworld.com as a source for land animals
>>
>>1035303
you heart doesn't even beat a single time in the span a cougar or tiger jumps on you and bites you. you are making shit up that belongs in comic books.
>>
>>1035303
No, it says nothing of blood vibrations. Said whiskers can detect increased warmth, softer skin, or anything else to help it know where to bite

I don't give a shit about being right or wrong to a perfect stranger, it just seems like some comic book shit and the information you provided neither proves nor disproves it

The green texting was just to give you shit
>>
>>1035307
probably the tiger knows by instinct which part of the geometry to got for with a bite and the whiskers only aid it by touch to form a shape and more importantly distance in the tigers brain.

blood flow detection is most likely a load of bullcrap. at least i couldn't find anything on it. not that there is no trustworthy scientific source there is no source period.
>>
>>1035327
I couldn't find anything either, dude was talking shit

Blood vibrations lol
>>
>>1035345
Reading comprehension dude. This doesn't say the tiger senses it's preys blood vibrating. The blood spoken of is the tiger's
>>
>>1035347
Dude, the source you keep citing says nothing of any blood but the tiger's. The tiger senses movement because it's whiskers have roots located in blood. When the whiskers get moved by touching something said movement is felt in the blood. This blood is the tiger's. Nothing is said of any other blood
>>
>>1035348
indeed. also cats like to go for the spinal cord or throat they are not vampires.
>>
>>1035394
It says nothing about these fucking blood vibrations dude. I'm not going to be mean and call you names. I'm confused where you got this idea from as nothing in the article linked talks about blood vibrating.

Also, there are two different people responding to you
>>
>>1035425
>how does the tiger determine if it's whiskers are touching a tree or a living animal
preconceptions and the other senses
>>
>>1035432
because you are making shit up. there is no scientific evidence that cats can detect blood flow with their whiskers. forget evidence, not even a scientific theory.
>>
>>1035425
Other ways tigers can tell they are touching a living animal

Whiskers detect heat
whiskers detect small movements (why playing dead works)
other senses

You have to be trolling at this point though. You're trying to tell me it's acute enough to be able to differentiate tigers from other animals? Come on dude, blood vibrations already is unbelievable
>>
>>1035443
>whiskers move forward and encircle the neck

Seems like even bigger bullshit
>>
>>1035443
>After the tiger’s canines have pierced the artery, the whiskers move forward, encircling the prey’s neck, and determine if the prey’s pulse is gone.
yeah that's not even close to what you are saying.
>>
only thing i could find that looks like actual research is they blindfolded some cats and the cats could still catch and kill mice. that's it.
>>
>>1035454
no dude i can defect a pulse or lack of one in a few seconds too, but i can't detect blood flow vibrations in a split second. the two are completely different.
>>
>>1035448
I'm not saying it's wrong (though after even more research I still haven't found anything else and the site you linked has no source it cites), I'm just saying it seems like bullshit
>>
>>1035460
>I didn't know you were a tiger
i'm not but pulses are fucking strong they can be easily detected by our clumsy fingers, also if you cut all the whiskers from a tiger it could still detect the moment the heart stops in a multitude of ways. for example the pulse is strong enough to be picked up by the lips the blood stops gushing from the wound and the prey probably relaxes in the moment of death.
>>
>>1035471
you proved nothing so far except that you can't source your claim of "cats being able to aim their bite by detecting vibrations from blood flow". that's pretty much it.

>refusing to acknowledge that whiskers are a much more precise method
nobody said that, i said there is no conclusive evidence to even that, as the cats could tell a multitude of ways when the blood flow stops other than that.

we know their whiskers are very sensitive, but being able to detect pulse by them does not imply the sensitivity anywhere near to what is needed to what you described. not even remotely close.

blind (or any) people can sometimes tell how big the room is from the way the sound bounces that doesn't necessarily make them daredevils.
>>
>>1035491
>asks to prove a negative
hmm... sure thing buddy.
>>
>>1023281
>>
>>1035579
>disregard my sources
>obvious logic
naah, you are stating things none of your cited sources claim, and it's not like they actually are high quality scientific research or anything to begin with. then you proceed to call people that don't believe you morons who can't follow simple logic but failed to demonstrate the ability to actually use proper logic, for example:
>When you feel your pulse in your wrist, how on earth is it not the vibration of blood flowing through your body?
now the pulse you feel is a change in blood pressure not a vibration. it generates vibration in the infra sound spectrum that doctors can hear with their stethoscopes but it's not an actual vibration and detecting it is nowhere near the same difficulty as detecting the sound the blood makes when it flows. but fun fact you can't really hear the blood flowing in an artery even with a stethoscope if you don't restrict the blood-flow.
>>
>>1035605
>i didnt even read 90% of your post
yeah that is one of the problems with people like you
>If they could feel heart beats so well with their lips or paws they wouldnt have whiskers.
the whiskers serve many many purpose just not the one you made up. without whiskers cat would be really fucked as they don't see very well up close. as it turns out their whiskers can even detect objects they don't touch directly because they can detect the change in air flow caused by objects and living things.

technically all hairs can do this even you can feel it on your arms if someone sneaks past by you in the dark. cats whiskers are just way more sensitive but still operate on the same basic principle.
>>
>>1035196
If I came across cougar kittens on my property I'd kill them. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>1035619
>You're subtley agreeing with what I've said.
no i'm not. you provided no source for this statement so far:
>They have whiskers that sense your blood flowing. It's how they bite the neck so accurately.
nothing can be found so far that would remotely support this statement.
>>
>>1035784
and if i could get away with it in a court of law i would kill people like you without hesitation.

no pulse is not any more vibration than walking.
your pulse that you feel in your wrist is a change in blood pressure. just because it's periodic it shouldn't be confused with vibrations (which are side effects of mechanical work in systems)
>>
>>1036587
>Vibration is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about an equilibrium point.
basically you don't expend energy on vibrations they are caused by the elastic properties of the mechanical system. your heartbeat is not such a phenomenon. it is the hydraulic effect of the contraction of heart muscles.
>>
>>1036654
yes indeed, but pulses are not vibrations. the vocal cords vibrate not your lungs.
>>
>>1036730
nobody said it doesn't. i said pulses are not fucking vibrations. not any more than walking and breathing or blinking. sounds may make objects vibrate and vibrating objects make sounds. and that is pretty much a fact. what is not a fact that heartbeats or pulses are vibrations. that is idiocy.
>>
>>1036923
i'm trolling? heh that's a good one!
>They have whiskers that sense your blood flowing. It's how they bite the neck so accurately.

>Can you explain to me how pulse =/= blood flowing
>When you feel your pulse in your wrist, how on earth is it not the vibration of blood flowing through your body?
