I reel in with my rod and while I'm reeling, it kinda jerks around and bounces up and down, also my spool keeps getting knots in the middle of it in places I don't use, I don't know what to do.

Thank you.

You got: Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Walleye, Large Mouth Bass, Small Mouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Crappie, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, Splake, Atlantic Salmon, Pacific Salmon, Whitefish & Sturgeon

you want to catch channel cats?

you basic catfish baits will catch them but for larger fish i would get good at catching baitfish and chunk them up to use as bait. check your local regs for bait restrictions but yeah...
have fun

Channel cats?

If you are gonna do artificial, go with dip bait, the sticky shit that comes in a jar. Much better than those dough balls. Get the rigs for the dip bait, coat em good, throw them out there. And I don't do catfish much anymore, but the few people who are successful with it all seem to say that you need to move around if you aren't getting any bites within 15min.

Or for bigger cats, get some bluegill or big shiners or shad or whatever. Blues and Flatheads like live from what I hear, but it's easy to land channel cats on chunks of small bluegill cut up to whatever size they can eat.

I'm going cat fishing tomorrow, and I was wondering what I should use for bait? Alot of people say blue gill, so I'm gonna try to catch some blue gill and chop an up. Is sweet corn the beat blue gill bait? I also got these just in case I don't catch blue gill.
>>
>>1022067
I've always done best for 'gills with worms. If you want an extremely low-effort bait for 'gills, Berkley Crappie Nibbles work pretty well also.

Can those weighted jig heads be used in a Carolina rig?

I trout fish around local lakes and ponds and just wanted to try casting out some live imitations while waiting on a bite to pass time. I use Carolina rigs to get the bait way out there where the trout are and they can't really feel the 1/2oz or 1oz Egg Sinkers. But with these weighted jig heads that come with the lures I can barely cast it 10 feet.

I'll be going fishing in the morning if the rain stops but has anybody used jig heads in Carolina rigs? I can't find any small enough worm hooks around here for trout.
>>
>>1022067
That stinky dough bait never works unless you're in some stocked pond then basically anything will work.

It really depends on where you fish. You can catch little mud cats at night in small rivers on night crawlers. When I go to the bigger rivers where I can catch some nice size channel cats I usually buy frozen shad from a bait store. Cut it up into chunks about the size of your hook (I use #4 Circle hooks) and then hook it to where most of the hook is exposed but it's still firmly on there. Then just cast it out and wait for the rod to go down and stay down. Pull the rod up slowly while reeling and it usually hooks itself.

You could use perch as well. When I was fishing a small river I cut up a perch I caught for the hell of it and caught a big 2' wide turtle on 6lb Fluro.
>>
saw that big ass carp AGAIN today (at least I think it's a carp, the scales looked like it)

That shit's a waste of money. Like I have said 1,000 times, if you want to try stink bait, get the dip bait in the jar and not the dough bait.

>>1022080
You won't really be able to rig them weedless properly. Plus the sliding weight on T-rigs makes it more difficult for fish to shake the hook loose.

Surprised to hear that from you guys. They've been my biggest producer all spring. Been doing well on flippin jigs and jerkabaits too, but squarebill cranks have put the most bass in the boat.
You know what hasn't worked for me lately? Spinnerbaits. Bass normally crush those this time of year, especially during the shad spawn. I can count on one hand the number of spinnerbait bass I caught so far this year. Sad!
>>
>>1022200
Yeah I'm not really sure why I wasn't throwing them prespawn. With the winter being as weird as it was I wasn't really sure when they were in prespawn so I used t rigs and jerkbaits.

nice! being organized and compartmentalized is a huge part of kayak fishing. Youll learn something about yourself and kayak fishing everytime you take it out.

learn to self rescue. it may one day save your life.
>>

>>1022255
Not if it's private water.
Your lake, your rules.
>>
>>1022258
but why
>>
>>1022260
Because backwater inbred
>>
>>1022260

Could be someone's farm pond that they virtually never fish and the guy is having a fish fry that weekend.

Or multiple folks are on kayaks and one of them is the designated fish keeper. Somebody else had to have taken the picture so he isn't alone and the bank is behind him so whoever took it is on the water.
>>
>>1022260
Because private property. The government doesn't have jurisdiction over private water.
It's why you don't have to wear your seat belt in your own driveway. On your own land, you manage your shit however you see fit.

>on a kayak

How heavy of an anchor are you using? Like...holy shit. I use a 3lb grapple anchor and could probably get away with a 1lb grapple anchor. No way in fuck could that pull me out of the yak.
>>
>>1022276
Nigger please I'm from Naperville
>>
>>1022281

If you drop the anchor, have part of the line around your leg and feeding the rest, the kayak is still drifting and the anchor catches the bottom suddenly (boat is still drifting), I can see it almost snatching you out of the boat.

Especially if you're a newbie with less comfort/experience in such an unstable boat and not in an especially stable kayak because it's undersized or cheaply made (common newbie mistakes).

I think you're underestimating how strong 20lb line is. Also, the rating for a lot of lines is more of an "at least" number than a hard one.
>>
>>1022905
Mono deteriorates with exposure to UV light, turning stiff and cracking after just a couple of years. They say to replace it every year just to be on the safe side. Your rig will cast better and your lures will have better action when the line is fresh.
Braid doesn't go bad nearly as quickly, but its main downfall is fraying. If you get to a point where your braid is looking kind of ratty, just pull it off and spool it back on backwards. This way you can get well over twice the lifespan from braid as you can from mono.
>>
>>1022953
>twice the lifespan
Shit, longer than that. I think my oldest line is 20lb braid on one reel and it's still going strong after 4+ years. Mono, even if you never use it and keep it in a dark place so it doesn't get brittle, the memory gets so fucked up that it's almost useless after a year.
>>
>>1022941
>line rating is an "at least" number
True, but if you ever get into tournament or world record fishing, those numbers matter A LOT, and they'd better be right.
If you think you caught a line-class world record, they will require and test a sample of your line. If it's too heavy, you won't get the record.

I think in the Pastebin, I posted a few line comparisons. Lots of stuff with knot strength and what different brands will actually break at compared to what they are rated. The better braids, I think their actual breaking strength was close to 2x the rated strength. I don't doubt that for a second because I have put a whole lot more than 20lb worth of force on #20 PowerPro without it breaking.

Carp aren't native here. In fact, they're considered an invasive species and a noxious nuisance, so there are neither closed seasons nor bag limits on them.
That said, having a rod that looks like it's rigged for catfish in your car will make your story more believable.

Found my dad's fly stuff. I know little about fly fishing, but I gotta start somewhere. I reel with my left + hold rod with my right; this looks like a lefty reel since he's lefty himself. Anyway to make it righty?

I'll change the line at the end of the green fly line, but the fly line itself seems ok. Any pro tips for noobs that know spinning would be appreciated

>>
>>1023018

>>
>>1023082
That's grass carp, not regular carp.

Regular carp rules are the same as every other state-no minimum length, no bag limits.
Grass carp are a special case because they're very tightly controlled. People have to get permits to put them into a lake, and pulling them out of a lake is prohibited because of fears of idiots dumping them into other rivers and establishing feral populations, as happened to the Mississippi River a few decades ago when a fish farm got flooded.
Interestingly, Texas also has rules on what to do if you catch grass carp from places where they're not supposed to be. You have to immediately gut them.

Many of those manual fly reels are ambidextrous. Just flip the reel around and respool the line to wrap the other way.
If that doesn't work, look up the instruction manual for your particular reel. Sometimes it's still relatively easy, just not THAT easy. I have an old Pflueger Medalist that requires flipping over a screwed-down drag plate to go from right to left hand operation. More modern designs are often simpler.

Pulled the whole brushpile up with it no problem, at least 70lbs worth of dead xmas trees wired together. Heavy enough I couldn't lift it out of the water without tipping the boat.

For mono, it's usually a good idea to replace it every season unless it's a pole that rarely gets used. Mono deteriorates with UV exposure, so the more you use it the more frequently you should be replacing it.

I fish 50-60 hours a month, so I respool all my mono rods every other month.

Braid basically lasts forever. I've got braid that's 8 years old still going strong.

I'm...not really sure with fluoro. I only use it for leaders, and almost always lose it within the week when it's on the rod, and the spool is kept out of the sun.

That's the click system.
There should be a sliding button the the back of the reel that makes the little triangle bit engage the gear on the spool. That keeps your fly reel from dumping 20 feet of line into the rod when you're trying to cast.
Just put a little grease around it and it'll be fine for a few more decades.

largemouth bass, for the record. went out with my wildlife management class to a private pond where we were required to keep anything under 16" so i ended up with six pretty decently sized fish to learn on

I throw them on steeper angled beaches and throw parallel to the beach at mellower spots used mainly as a noisy search bait. I have a loaded floating trap that has a bill its a killer in surf on light tackle. the bill puffs the sand up and i'm guessing fish think its a sandcrab trying to get away. i dont always throw it but it has a place in the box.

>>
>>1023463

>>
>>1023634
What do you want to catch and 300 in what currency?

$300USD will be more than plenty for a topwater setup for any freshwater fish on the continent. 300 Mexican pesos won't buy you a single scumfrog.
>>
>>1023481

>topwater setup
Do you guys actually have multiple rods set up for specific ways to fish?
Like I'm sure you could just put a rod and reel together that works well for topwater and than 5 other ways of fishing. And btw what even goes into a topwater setup?
>>
>>1023661
On this note, how the hell do you keep from washing sunscreen off your hands constantly while fishing? Also how do you keep from making your lure sunscreen flavored?

Fished for 8 hours yesterday, the only thing that got burned was the backs of my hands due to wearing a long-sleeve shirt, wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen. But it apparently kept washing off my hands, since I reapplied it like 4x and it's supposed to be good for 6 hours per application.
>>
>>1023663
>do you guys have multiple rods set up for specific ways to fish?
Fuck yes.
>like I'm sure you could just put a rod and reel together that works well for topwater and then 5 other ways to fish
Yes, you can, the majority of fishermen on the planet only have 1-2 rods and do everything with them.

Having multiple rods rigged different ways is a convenience, not a necessity, but goddamn is it convenient when you're on a boat.
>troll up on some lily pads, grab your big stiff rod with a frog already on it

>>
>>1023663
>>1023666
Oh yeah.
>And btw what even goes into a topwater setup?
Usually fairly heavy mono on a stiff rod, because you're normally throwing things into heavy cover like lily pads, and you need a fast action to work things like spooks and dawgs and to keep a fish's head up and away from structure so they don't wrap the line up and break off.

Don't fingerfuck your lures when it's time to fish. Handle them as little as possible.

Also, remember how I said spray can? That's how you get the back of your hands without getting your palms too.

Mid grade rod, mid grade reel and enough braid to fill it. The rest you can spend on a shitload of lures and the tackle trays to hold them.

True but just keep in mind that you don't actually "own" your land, you're just renting it from the government. If they decide they want to build a railroad through your land or anything else, they'll just take it from you. And if a law doesn't exist that allows them to, they'll just make one up.

It's not necessary, but getting a rod that's made for topwater makes it a lot easier to walk baits imo.

Line is all going to be around the same price, ~$20 for 40-60# 8 strand braid. Leaves $280 for rod and reel.

For frogging specifically Id go with a reel with a 8:2:1 gear ratio so you can recover line instantly. Your better off spending a majority of that remaining budget on the reel since all you really need for a good frog rod is a heavy, fast action rod in a length you think will be comfortable for you. I like 7'-7'1". You can find a shit ton of options that meet that and the more you spend the only thing that will change is ergonomics and weight.

Is this better then?

I've always been told that overfilling is worse than under.
>>
>>1023989

Much better.

You don't want to overfill, but too much line is like, right up to the edge or even more than fits in the diameter of the spool. Then you'll get fucked up casts.

Putting on more line up to within about 1/16" of the edge of the spool is fine.
>>
>>1023989
Braid you can fill really far anyway. Underfilling will kill your casting distance and overfilling will give you knots until you cut off enough to where it's at the right level.
>>
>>1023989
I've never had a problem with knots from putting too much line on a spool. You just have to make sure the line isn't coming back onto the reel super loose when you're working a lure.

>>
>>1024060
The wind knots are probably something else. Keep your line tight when you cast and everything. I never get wind knots because I don't let 30yds of line just blow wherever.

Braid is hard to overfill. Especially 10lb. If you overfilled it, you would have big nests coming out of the reel whenever you open the bail to cast.

Kek. I have never had issues with any type of braid or any weight in the wind. I don't think a special line will solve it. You need to figure out why you are getting the knots in the first place and fix that.

My guess is you cunts who get "wind knots" are letting that shit blow all over when the lure lands after a cast. Try flipping the bail closed as soon as it hits the water and reel the slack in.

Like I said, different weights, brands of braid, rods, reels, lures, etc and never had an issue with these knots that a couple people complain about. And it's always windy near me.

No, it's completely different. Mostly because you use the weight of your line to get casting distance.
To work a lure on a fly rod, you hold the line coming out of your reel still with your rod hand, with your rod you work the lure and with your free hand you draw in the fly line methodically through the line guides to get your retrieve.
When i work with nymphs, I jerk the line a couple of inches, let it sit awhile and repeat.
