So I took the advice of signing up for MTB, the first month is only $5. We'll see what I end up with. I have almost no baits, I bought a Rapala blue gill crank bait. Do you think this will do well in a lake where there are normally blue gill? I live in arizona so it gets really hot, and the water is murky

>>
>>1024356
It'll probably catch you a few. I'd suggest getting something bright like a kvd 1.5 in chartreuse. In murky water you want the fish to be able to see it. They're only like $6 and every store that has fishing stuff should have them.

Shore fishing a stocked lake for trout Sunday morning - please give some advice.

I got a 7' Pflueger Trion for Christmas this last year and have only used it once for a really dismal opening day on a local lake.

I want to fish Green Lake near me but could only do it from the 3-4 docks on different parts of the lake.

1) What lb mono should I use
2) Is there an ideal weight I should use if lure fishing? Is 1/4 oz too heavy if its 6lb line with 4lb leader? Recommendations?
3) I have heard that the leader should be 1-2ft, is that too long?
4) How the fuck do I use bobbers correctly. I always hook them on and then put a splitshot below it but then it either blows back or I can cast.

I love fishing, but I have a real hard time with understanding how to read the water, properly set up a rig and need to work on patience. I am going to stay committed to this.

Waking up at like 6am by the way is that not early enough?

Apologies for the bock of text, all replies are appreciated. Pic is me.
>>
>>1024405
1) Use 4-8lb flurocarbon. Berkley Vanish is good and under $10.
2) I never have fished with lures. For lakes, I use 1/4 or 1/2oz egg sinkers with a bead as a stopper. Just loop it through the bead twice, set your length, then loop it again. It usually sticks.
3) You have to play around with your leader. If you're dragging in a bunch of weeds and grass on your hook, then you should make it longer. Use floating baits like salmon eggs, powerbait, etc.
4)I've never used bobbers in my life. They're something to put on your 5 year old nephew's pole to keep him occupied.

Lake or pond trout is pretty straightforward. I only use lures when fishing in streams.
>>
>>1024410
Ya i usually only troll when I fish which is on rare occasion - I feel like it would be incredibly tiring to use lures on shore but its all i know. I will try what you said.

How far up the line do you put your sinkers/stoppers? Right above where the swivel and leader is or higher?

I get the idea though - weight sits on bottom and bait makes it float above the weed line.

Appreciate the help btw.

I usually bring three setups when lake fishing for trout:
1.Powerbait rod. 7'0 medium light fast action rod and 2500 reel, 6lb 12" fluro leader black swivel and 1/4oz bank sinker. 6lb fluro mainline
2. Spinners. 6'6 medium w medium action and 2500 reel. 6lb fluro to snap swivel
3. Float Rod. Fished with bait or plastic jig/power worms 8ft Light Fast action with 1000 reel. 10' of 4lb fluro with alberto knot to 10lb braid. I use a stop knot, small plastic bead, slip float and enough split shot to knock the float upright.
Sometimes the trout will only want one of the three.

I was carving a canoe for the last couple of days,
it had a hollow cavity on the inside, but the outside was still a log
I came out this morning to find that one of my neighbors had reported it as a downed tree and the neighborhood association had hired a guy to chop it into pieces

how do I find out who made the call, and what should i do to them?
>>
>>1024642
The best revenge-turn it into money.
Bill them $1500 for the replacement cost of the raw log that you were going to turn into a canoe
>>
>>1024642

Depends on where it was when they reported it.
>>
>>1024654
Even better, get a lawyer to bill the neighborhood association for replacement of your log, the value of your labor and court costs.
After all, the thing was on your land, wasn't it? If they had it destroyed, they can afford to have it replaced.
I'm sure any lawyer would be more than happy to take your case, as long as you can document what happened, who did it, how much it would cost to replace your materials and the price of your labor.
Take them to the fucking cleaners.

Anyone have a good line on the worm in my pic? It's a Z-man a buddy gave me all of 1 of, I don't know the color and I *think* it's a WormZ, which apparently nobody fucking sells any more. It was the only ultra light rod over 6' I could find. I don't like buying rods online because I like to physically feel them in my hands. It's was fairly cheap, around $60 if in not mistaken. Piece of junk popped 2/3 down the blank when I forgot how hard my drag was set and hooked my lure on a log.

After the initial snap I sperged out and stomped it to pieces

Does anyone have any infographics or general advice on the different ways to fish spoons?
I have a few and never caught anything on them, but they've been popular for well over a century so they must work. If you've been successful fishing them, I want to know how you do it.

>>1024532
That'll work fine. It'll probably last a good long while too.
Fly reels are much less complicated than even your average cheapshit reel. Very simple designs and construction means that even cheap reels will last you quite awhile if you keep them lubed.
>>
>>1024742

They're meant to imitate the flashing sides of baitfish. Steady reeling interspersed with quick little twitches of the rod tip to impart a darting action.

I have the best luck in clearer water with silvers and blues.

We threw nothing but spoons when we were in Canada for pike. I tried a bunch of different retrieve styles and none of them seemed to work any better then a steady moderate speed retrieve. The action comes down to the shape and size of the spoon. My favorites are Dr. Spoons like pic related. They have a very unique flip flopping action that has outpeoduced every other spoon we had on the boat by far
>>
>be a nubcake fisher

Ask around nicely, find out who "Did you the favour". Lay it on thick enough that people will tell you without lying and saying they did it. Then once the person is identified go ask them, act friendly. Have them admit it. And then you have two options.

1) Immediate satisfaction and do a 180 and explain in very coarse, loud language how they fucked up before handing them an invoice for the wood. Possibly threatening to sue if you have grounds for that.

2) Slow game. Leave after they admit it and slowly earn your revenge over the years. How you do that is ultimately up to you, and which neighbour it was (if it was a genuine mistake or not)

>>

pretty good deal desu
>>
>>1024751
I know WHAT they are, I just don't have any clue HOW to fish them so that I can get a bite.

>>1024787
So don't be. Expand your horizons a little. The good news is it's easier than you think to pick up some lures that work yet are also easy to fish.
Inline spinners like a Mepps Aglia or Rooster Tail are simple as hell and catch fish. I've had lots of days where those little things outfished bait.
Lipless crankbaits like a Rattletrap are perfect as well. Just get a standard silver and black model in a size that's right for your rod and use it. It's hard to fish wrong as long as you fish it pretty fast, so it's great to use when you're searching for fish.
For summer's late afternoons and evenings, topwater lures are awesome. For dead-simple topwater, you can't beat a Jitterbug. Surface poppers like the Hula Popper and Rebel's Pop-R are also simple to fish and consistently productive.

some are made for casting
some are made for trolling
some are made for vertical jigging
what kind do you have?

>>1024838
do you want them to float or to slow the sink rate down? the lower hairs of a bucktail are hollow, theyre used for flare and to slow the sink rate of jigs. if youre just adding some foam to a jig then closed cell craft foam will work, the type one uses for a strike indicator.

I've got uninsulated rubber hip boots for fishing, since the only species viable to wade-fish for within 100 miles of me is trout, and all the trout are in very groomed trout parks where the water is no more than knee deep at its deepest.

add a tiny dot of foam to the collar or head.
a hole punch works well to make this. punch a hole in some foam. [1/8" adhesive backed craft foam would work good for this] push the dot out of the punch and superglue dot on jig and youre dun. no tying required.

Just dropped 520 bucks on tackle warehouse. I will post the goodies when they get delivered. Basically picked a bunch of sale lures and two new reels because I had 25% off any order total on top of the sale prices so I saved like 125 dollars off the shit.

The reels were like 40 and 35 dollars off.

Don't know when it will show because of memorial day but it's all weird stuff I don't use much and have wanted to try the meme lures so hopefully you guys enjoy. I know Pepsi is a lure whore so he should enjoy it.

I've heard of musky eating dead whole baits and live bait but never cut bait before. Probably since it was blind it became a scavenger. My friend was really pissed about that since he had been casting with lures for them all week.

So it turns out trying to fish on memorial day weekend was a bad move

Find a new spot where i think plenty of crappie and other fish would be, hoping i would be able to catch a new species. (either crappie/walleye/sauger/small mouth) Extremely excited about this spot.

Within minutes i catch a small bluegill ( i haven't caught anything in a few months,) and I had this spot to myself.

Then about 3 minutes later, a non fishing boat zooms buy with about 6 people in it, all drinking heavily, They stop literally 30 yards in front of where I was casting from under a bridge, and begin jumping in the water, then a wake boat comes by and joins em.

I left early and another fishing boat hereby does the same immediately after

non fishing boat fags are cancer, I never wanted to have my AK on me so badly
>>
>>1025343
Yeah this weekend isn't really good for fishing since all these asshats are on the water. I was fishing in a small small river most people would consider a creek if they saw it. Generally there's nothing but Jon boats with 9.9-25 horses and rarely a bass boat. Was fishing Friday on anchor in current and this big ass wake boat blasts literally within 10 feet of me since the creek is so narrow, full throttle throwing rolling whitecapping waves into my little tin boat they didn't even notice or look back. 30 minutes later they came back down river and did it again, waving at us like they are our friends. Still unaware they waked us either time.
>>
>>1025354
Tried fishing at LOZ yesterday. Hadn't been on the water 5 minutes before I watched a wake boat capsize a bass boat that was still launching.

In 3 hours I watched the state police and game wardens write over 100 tickets, make 7 drunk driving arrests, watched 2 boats capsize, and watched a 30+ foot party barge with 50+ college kids on it ram the dock at >15kn because the random 25yo they found to rent it was falling-down drunk and in the process of puking over the side instead of driving it.

I turned around and went home real quick. Memorial Day weekend on my home lake is pure cancer.
>>
>>1024312
I know it says big fish only but can anyone point me in the right direction for how to catch bluegill? I have access to a large pond, and I typically fish off the dock in the late afternoon with jigs and live baits. I just don't know how I'm fucking up? Can't catch anything at all. Pond is stocked.
>>
>>1025361
I don't know what it is about non fishing boaters, I mean even the first time I went boating I still had common sense and boated better than 80 percent of people I see out there, especially on a weekend like this.
>>
>>1025374
Try a throw net, or little peices of worms on a #6 snelled hook, or those crappie bites you can buy in a little plastic jar work well. If you hear popping kind of like rice crispys that's bluegill eating bugs. Why are you fishing for bluegill, live bait?
>>
>>1025375
At least with LOZ part of it is most of the boaters have either never driven a boat before or do it extremely rarely, and it's a rental boat with cheap insurance so they have no qualms about fucking it up.

Alcohol is the next biggest factor, at least in my area (all of Missouri and Kentucky, southern halves of IA and IL, parts of TN) if the boat isn't fishing everybody aboard is piss drunk 100% guaranteed regardless of lake/river or time of year.

Here in MO there is no requirement for a boating safety test or anything else, they'll rent a boat to anyone 25 or older even if that person doesn't have a driver's license, and anybody can own and operate a boat. No age requirement, no DL requirement, pretty much the only laws around boats are you can't be intoxicated (.10 BAC instead of .08 like driving) and there has to be a life preserver of some form on the boat for every person on the boat. I think children under 10 have to actually wear one.
>>
>>1025381
I'm in Missouri as well, I was actually fishing in the Osage which leads to Truman which leads to lake of the Ozarks I think? My dad has told me don't even bother putting your boat in on lake of the Ozarks too many rich assholes causing accidents. He said they'll wake someone just for fun and years back they waked an anchored cabin boat overnight while they were sleeping and the people didn't make it out when it sank.

I had to pass my boaters licence, do you not have to get one to rent a boat?
>>
>>1025394
...no?

Dafuq is a boater's license? I've had a boat for 18 years and have never heard of such a thing, and I've interacted with the water cops (both Mo State Police and game wardens) multiple times and nobody's asked me for one either.

That depends on time of year, species, weather etc.. >Find a list of rods sold in the US (ranked by number sold a year) and everyone here would swear by a rod in the bottom 5

To be fair this isn't really a good way to judge how well a rod reforms, but the ugly stick IS probably one of the better cheaper rods, especially for durability.

Great for soaking bait, okay for moving lures, terrible for T-Rigs and jigs

I use it for everything from trout to catfish. I have 6lb fluro on a 1000 size reel for trout and 10lb mono on a 2500 for everything else. I keep 3 small hard plastic tackle boxes in my backpack. 1 has 1/8oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz,, and 1oz egg sinkers and beads, one has my hooks, and the other has lures and misc. stuff.

It's nice to have nice things, but it's not necessary.
For what most people fish for, a $10 Shakespeare rod from Walmart is more than sufficient. It will almost certainly last longer than their interest in fishing.

I killed my first catched fish today. Some local guy that's basically my role model for fishing gave me advice to kill common carp (not officially invasive here) whenever caught.

Took the carp upstream with my net behind the river bend so another angler didn't see me. Took my knife out and slit both gills. Tossed it in the bush. Blood on my hands and knife was rinsed away in the river.
:/

In good news I bought a diawa bg 2500 (local guy took 50$ off for me). And next week I'll be back at the tackle shop, they'll teach me how to cast a fly for free.

"cheap fishing"
Is there such thing?
What's the cheapest we are allowed to go fishing?
I mean, is not like being a poorfag is a factor.
I just like to try and see whats the minimal of resources you need to achieve success,
like making your own baits / lures, or using homemade equipment, recicling, natural weights...

I've already get some good results with lures made out of silicone waste. You make a transparent or colored silicone cord over a glass and you cut it in segments and give it fishy or wormy saphes, and you are ready to go

Got me some big tasty makerels in the rocks with those and a cheap as fuck 10€ rod that did come with the reel and line included.

I also made weights out of stones and fishing line, I developed an easy way to tie them so they dont drop away from the line, just check at your back for people or things you could damage in case it loosens. I do this because lead weights are a scam and also pollutes the floors.

These are the things I mean
>>
why don't fish want my powerboat minnows on a jig
>>
>>1026045
Time is money. Therefore the time put into crafting what the industry does efficiently isn't worth it, especially when you get some of the cheap stuff.

Crafting your own lures can be cheaper but usually when you just buy all the tricky parts like how fly tying works, or crafting spinners, you just buy the surplus materials and assemble them yourself.
try jig tying perhaps.
I'd suggest buying jig heads and figuring out things to put on the hook. Sort of like a cheao version of jig tying.
How do you tie rocks? Seems like split shots are better.
>>
>>1026082
1. Fish actually aren't where you're casting
2. Your presentation (retrieve rate etc) is bad
3. Fish aren't big enough for the lure, like can't fit it in their mouth.
4. They're not interested in the lure and prefer to eat something else that isn't represented by your lure

I see, maybe I'll commit to a hole next time even after a dozen of dinks. From what I understand about rivers, fish are changing grounds typically so it would have been best if I hit that spot again.

This fat bastard slammed my roboworm like it owed it money, in about 6" of water.

Despite not being particularly long she's chubby. Probably around 3lbs. Biggest bass I've seen come out of this lake.

If bluegill got to the size of LMB, all other fish would be an afterthought.
>>
>>1026596
y'know, that is a wholly true statement.
>>
>>1026599
I mean, they do get to the size of dinner plates if you know the right spot.
>>
>>1026605
They do, but even those are only 2lbs or so.
Think of what it would be like to hook a 7lb gill.

That would be fun. Or if the Mayans got close to that, it would be wild. LMB are fun to catch because they jump but they really don't fight hard for their weight.

Cunts tryin to hit the bump limit while I should be asleep...
>>
seriously though

why can't I catch any fish on hard baits
>>
>>1026617
yer doin' it wrong.

Seriously. What are you fishing for, approximately where do you live, and what hard baits are you trying?

There's a time and a place for everything.
>>
>>1026612
Small mouths fight way harder than LMB

Out around my area we get "stripers" which are hybrid LMBs and they fight good, but oh lord will a 1lb bluegill or sunfish or crappe fight harder than a 5lb LMB.

needlesa to say, my pond is easy as fuck I know where they nest and I know where they hunt and I can see their sillouettes in the water.

If they wont bite, I can basically snag a 10 pounder.
>>
>>1026624
Stripers are their own species (striped bass, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Striped_bass) or hybrids of white bass and striped bass when introduced as such.

No black bass in the mix at all.
>>
>>1026564
>Normally small fish in a whole means no big fish?
What do you think the big fish eat?
>>
>>1026630
Interesting.

The ohio river is full of striped bass and I was always told they were a mixed breed of LMB.
>>
>>1026635
Yeah that's farmers being unedumacated.

White bass are native and naturally occurring in all the major river systems of the midwest and northeast. Turns out they're closely enough related to striped bass (which is technically a saltwater species but tolerates fresh water really well) they can interbreed.

White bass were introduced into just about every major lake in the US and southern Canada as a sport fish, since they really don't have a diet overlap with walleye or sauger and they could do so without permafucking the ecosystem. White bass aren't capable of getting anywhere near as big as striped bass though, so then we imported striped bass into just about every major lake and river in the US. But striped bass don't tolerate Canadian winters, so we bred them with the white bass to create hybrid stripers. Turns out hybrid stripers are bigger than either species by themselves and hardy enough to survive as far north as Manitoba.

Is that even broken? Nothing looks snapped, just seems like the bolt came out..

Ugly stiks are fine but there are a lot of other rods at a slightly higher price point that will be more enjoyable to fish with. I own 3 ugly stiks and they're all I fished with for years but after going graphite I'll never go back or recommend anyone an ugly stik if they will be doing anything but soaking bait in salt water.

Why do you faggots care so much? He's been here forever and posts trophy catches all the time. Mind your own business, the majority of people here are overweight and you shouldn't give a fuck. They know it's unhealthy.

>>1026045
Those look like they would be too light and oddly shaped to work very well.

>>1026507
Baby bass and smokin shad have worked well for speckled trout and redfish
