Well now that I have pic related rod, I'm pretty excited to buy a reel.

Then it's just line, some kind of compact tackle box, tackle, and getting the new tires I have sitting in my garage installed on my bike.
>>
>>1016788
Can't go wrong with a Shimano™ reel
>>
>>1016788
I'd say buy a small plano box and put small curly tail grubs/jigheads in it, some small rapala™ crankbauts and jerk baits, some mepps™ inline spinners, some hooks (I'd say either Aberdeen or baitholder sizes 8-2) a few splitshot, a few bobbers, and some forceps. Also, strike king™ (I think) makes a square bill crank about an inch long, I really like it in the white shad colour around shallow rock piles. Smallmouth and crappie crush it. Then berkley trilene 8 pound test should cover line really nicely

I was catching bluegill on one of those little crankbaits the other day. Its a lot of fun. They were going nuts for it. Pretty cool when a whole school of gills are racing for your bait
>>
Never been fishing anon here, again.
Is this a stupid choice for pole? Something colapsable would be cool.

Is the pocket fisherman retarded? I have been looking at it too.
>>
>>1016815
That might be okay for somebody who wants to catch some fish while backpacking or for a kid, but you're going to want something more legitimate if you want to get into fishing as a serious hobby/sport. Just get a 2 piece rod combo in the $60-100 range and you will be golden. I recommend either a Berkley Lightning Rod or Pfleuger President 6' or 6'6" medium power combo because they're affordable, solid and available pretty much everywhere. Make sure to get the 2 piece if portability is an issue for you.

You want your rod to be sensitive to feel bites and set the hook at the right time, I imagine that thing just feels like holding a stick.

dont get telescopic rods, and for the love of god dont get a pocket fisherman
if you want a first rod, i honestly reccomend this rod in either 6'6" or 7'
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0069QSRM2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
its cheap, and if you abuse it too hard it might break, but its fairly durable, fairly sensative, and definately budget. then for a reel, this should be decent
https://www.amazon.com/136520-Okuma-Ignite-Spin-Reel/dp/B00A0PA398/ref=sr_1_65?srs=2597723011&ie=UTF8&qid=1494984870&sr=8-65&th=1
if you want a fully assembled combo and your heart is set on a small package, on a budget, this would probably be an okay little set up

>During an Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation study, up to 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days as a result of inadequate holding and weigh in procedures during tournaments.[14]

What year? And tournaments are a lot different than catch a fish and taking a picture and letting it go.

>>1016741
I would argue that the reason some lakes are garbage is because of poaching. Some people keep literally everything they catch.

Or if someone keeps a sack when they aren't in a tournament situation. That is some grade A retardation right there.

just wanted to say thanks for these resources

it's been 16+ years since I last fished and tomorrow I get to go fishing with my wildlife management class, pretty nervous since there are a lot of rural kids who have been doing this stuff all their lives

feels funny to be cramming for this stuff alongside my exam material

anyway, since it's a two week mini semester we only get three days to go out and fish. top five bass, sunfish, and catfish caught will get trophies.
kind of goofy but it's going to be fun!

kinda livejournaly but THANKS FOR BEING HERE

just dont pretend to know any more than you do, and take any avice anyone will give you (unless its something totally stupid that you know is bullshit) and dont stay too sedentary, move around the fishing area and find the fish if you can
>>
Well, decided to go throw a topwater at dusk.

Caught a dink on second cast, then promptly missed a ~3lb bass when a fucking goose bit me.
>>
on the topic of catch and release

i worked on part of a study( worked on it for one year and have looked atpast years data)
this was taken place in a section of river that is catch and release only but is incredibly highly fished, but most people who fish there actually know proper c+r

study was on general survivability over the period of a year (accounting for c+r, People illegally poaching ,acts of god predation, and natural death )

survivability numbers ranged anywhere from 58% to 93%
iirc the 58%year was a major drought and normal averages for most years were mid 70-s to mid 80's

I hear so many people talk about how geese will attack and bite you. I have never had this happen. Farm geese, Canada geese, you name it. It's not that I don't believe it, there is just a weird discrepancy between how people talk about geese and my own experiences.

trust me they will for sure bite you if you chase their babys. I live near a golf course and when we were kids the neighbors and I went over and tried to pet them. We learned our lesson real quick. why the fuck is that every single piece of water that that has trout in NY state is scattered with sprawling mansions usually set back in the middle of no where? Telescoping rods are nice in theory but suck balls irl.
And there's a reason no bait and tackle shop sells the pocket fisherman. For the same money you can get a beginner's combo at your local Walmart that will outperform it in every conceivable way.
>>
>>1016831
It'll work.
Honestly, if there's a Walmart around where you are, I'd get a look at what's on the sporting goods shelf there. Their beginner's combos are comparable and most also sell lures and bait too.

All you do to remove the fillets from the cooked fish is lay it down on a plate after cooking and lift it by the tail, then use a fork at the base of the tail to peel off the fillet. Then you flip it over and take the other fillet in the same manner. The weight of the fillet will slide it off so you just need to gently pull with the fork. You can then quickly inspect for any bones that came off in the fillets. There will be few if any if the fish has been cooked properly. You get maximum meat with this method without the pain of filleting.

I'm quite excited

>Several years ago, my uncle dug a spring pond on family lands into a way larger one, could even call it a small lake now
>placed rocks from small to huge to create several shoals with deep pits between them
>the pond didnt have any fish in it naturally
>we left the newlymade "lake" to settle down and regrow vegetation for a year
>Then placed a lot of local freshwater shrimp into the lake
>left it for a year, so the population increases
>then we planted dwarf whitefish babies from a nearby body of water
A subspescies of the common Whitefish, it doesnt grow beyond 5 to 6 inches in lenght
>again we left it for a year
>as we came back, we noticed that the outflowing stream had become several times larger
>The waterlevel had not gone down, but the water is now notably colder
>Decided to see if the fish still were present in the pond with fish traps
>We found that the whitefish are doing fine
>found brown trout, that we had not planted
We were excited about the Brown trout to no end
>We decide to give the brown trout additional food source
>released minnows into the pond
>admittedly they are a new fish to the area, altough they are present in other bodies of water locally
A year later we check the progress again, all planted and now naturally occurring species seem to be thriving
>caught a fat 4 pound brown trout
>as well as many chubby baby trouts
>we released them
>We circled around the small lake, to see if pike had moved in
>we couldnt find any, but we found freshwater snails and saw couple of muskrats and duck families

We are really proud of ourselves, Brown trout populations have been dwindling in the area, and we seem to have made a perfect nursery for them.

And this year, we decided its time we can start to lightly fish "the lake" as well as the small stream we ended up creating.
>>
>>1017135
Forgot to mention that my brother and I also found schools of baby fish around the shoreline.
They were way too small to identify, so they could have been minnows or whitefish.

Hopefully both
>>
>>1017135
>>1017140
Sounds nice. Shouldnt you remove the muskrat though. Dont they eat fish? If you aim to keep the area productive
>>
>>1017141
Muskrat eat mostly vegetation iirc. They should be beneficial in the long run, even if it means a few fish get eaten
>>
>>1017135
10/10 anon, glad to hear it.
>>
>>1017135
It almost sounds like a "happy accident"
What was your original goal, or was this it?

Anyway. Well done. More fishermen should act to preserve, but sadly I dont see it happening before the situation us critical
>>
>>1016940
Same here in NJ, although there are plenty of public trout waters. But most of the rivers between north Jersey and central is on private property.

Honestly I think it's good because it means industry and anglers stay out, the land owners sort of protect it indirectly by just owning the land.

That means it stays trout production- and it feeds the lower waters with bigger wild trout.
State won't stock anywhere there's no public access anyways
>>
>>1017105
The first two happened to me but never responded when I emailed them

Does anybody have recommendations for rain gear?
>>
>dafuq is up with 4chins shitting the bed on the regular now?
Anyway, foul hooked a 6ft long grass carp while bass fishing today. 30lb braid and it spooled me and broke off. RIP $15 worth of line.
>>
>>1017183
Get the best you can afford if you intend to actually fish in the rain.

Things that make good raingear good are
>pants have high back and suspenders
Keeps water from running down your crack when you bend over
>coat has storm flap with rain channel in zipper
Pretty much all of them do, but it both keeps water from seeping through the zipper and acts as an anti snag feature
>adjustable or neoprene cuffs
Keeps water from running up your arms during reaching/casting
>adjustable hood
So you can still see, because everyone's hoods are huge for some reason
>>
>>1017200
They get that fucking long? Jesus

>6ft long grass carp

>>1017183
>>1017202

>>
>>1017205
>not able to tell an obvious exaggeration
It spooled me. It was big. I dont know how big, but big enough to strip off around 90 yards of line against about 12lbs of drag tension (which is the max for my baitcaster).
>>
>>1017216
In that case, grab the Frogg Toggs packable rainsuit and call it good.

So MTB replied to me

>Hi TXLizardFag

>Thanks for reaching out to us!

>Our local boxes are currently targeting a little bit of a broader local region, but we may/will refine it in more detail in the future. We do talk to local guides and experts to figure out exactly whats best to put in the box for your local waters! This is our first attempt at local boxes and have heard some fantastic response and feedback that the subscribers in your area currently are loving their local box and local content!

>Let us know if you have any additional questions and we'll be happy to help. Have a great day and thanks for your support!

Hopefully by "bit of a broader region" they don't mean just by state. I wasn't expecting it to be to each individual zip code or anything. I'll probably give it a shot, it's not like I don't fish all over the state.
>>
>>1016876
It does happen. Happened to me. Must have been too close to it's chicks or something because all you know I hear this awful hissing and a goose is doing that stupid fucking goose walk towards me with it's wings spread then it's mate was behind me beating my back with it's wings before I even knew there was a 2nd goose in the area. This happened when I was maybe 13 and was biking with some friends. My friends were howling with laughter and I thought this thing was going to kill me, felt like someone was punching me in the back.

tl;dr steer clear of geese

I have. It's great fishing, IF you have a bass boat, and IF you can go during the week.

Weekends and holidays it's so full of idiots on boats/jetskis/party barges it's outright unsafe, and there's only like 3 public-access boat ramps so you're looking at a 3-4 hour line just to launch on weekends from April-October. It actually gets about the same amount of boat traffic as Lake of the Ozarks, while being a scant fraction of the size.

I can fish Bull Shoals via kayak and it's less crowded, but the fishing isn't nearly as good.
>>1017268
They're fucking
>>
>>1017268

Grab a crow bar, baseball bat, or iron pipe and go out there and club one to death.

When I lived in upstate NY as a kid the carp would do this every year. Thrashing about in the shallows near the shore and being generally oblivious to everything. I put on my swim trunks, waded out up to my stomach, and bashed one right on the top of the head with a fence post before dragging it in to shore.

I still have a photo of me struggling to hold it up by the gills with its tail in the dirt.
>>
>>1017260

I never really trust my line after it's been tensed to breaking, I feel like it's going to be weaker after that and I'll lose a decent fish to it.

am I the only one who poops in my local lake?
i can't be bothered to walk all the way back to my car and drive someplace
so I usually just drop my pants while hanging from a tree branch, with both of my knees pulled up to my chest
and plop the slop directly into the water
I eat a lot of indian food and plastic, so it's mostly liquid and little brown pellets
i don't think i'm hurting the fish, in fact, i figured the other fishermen would be happy to find out I've introduced a population of crappy to our local hole [from my hole!]

Kek nah. Reminds me of when I was fishin with Miami anon. I think it was the second fish she ever caught. I was like 100yds+ away from her and she gut hooked this little bass. So she comes running all the way along the shoreline, holding the line so the bass is dangling on the hook lodged in it's throat. I was able to get the hook out pretty clean, but the damage had been done.

So of course when I throw it back in, the thing is just barely breathing and floating and she's like "No!!! Will he be ok?" and I'm just like "Of course!" and then she looks away and I use the rod to push the dying fish under some weeds to hide it and I'm like "look! It swam away!"

Higher gear ratio=faster retrieve, BUT less cranking power when fighting bigger fish.
Lower gear ratio=more power to haul in bigger fish, BUT less speedy retrieves.

Like all things, it's a balance. If you're worm fishing, you might like a slower retrieve, but if you're throwing crankbaits, you want speed. If you're in a boat, you can get away with a lower gearing because you can tow your lure behind your boat. Shore fishing I'd go with a higher gearing because all your speed has to come from YOU.
>>
>>1017505

Alright, well I'll be doing all shore fishing so something in the 5-6:1 ratio should be good?
>>
>>1017506
You should be golden with that. Most fishermen I know don't even pay attention to their gear ratio honestly. It only really matters once you start buying specialized rods for crankbaits, swimbaits etc.
>>
>>1017506
Good luck finding a memecaster slower than 5.8:1. Spinning reels kinda run the gamut but tend to be lower geared due to the longer line travel per turn tho.

My Okuma memecaster is a 6.3:1 and is a good general purpose reel, though I fish enough cranks I would like a higher geared one for a secondary rod. Just can't justify the $80 for a Lews I wont use all the time when my daily driver rig cost less than that total.
>>
>>1017507

Sounds good. Working on narrowing down my reel choices now. Thanks for the info.

>>1017508

I'm looking for a spinning reel, not a baitcaster. It's just what I'm most familiar with and I don't fish so often that I care to make the switch.
>>
>>1017508
Abu Ambassadeurs are 5.3:1. Before that they were 4.7:1 (and some of the "big game" models still are), and WAY back when, they used to be 3.8:1.
Hell, if you want to get REALLY old school, a bunch of the old classic pflueger and Shakespeare memecasters from the 60s and before were 4:1. They don't have free spools (the handle spins when you cast), and your thumb is the drag, but if you want low gearing, they've got it.

I finally got some use out of my Eagle jigging for walleyes on Saturday. Was perfect for that. Enough sensitivity to easily feel bites and enough backbone to easily fight good sized walleyes.
>>
>>1017520
What kinda jigs did you use? The lake I'll be fishing all of next week has a ton of walleye but I'm still newish at fishing for them.
>>
>fish around body of water
>see no fish ever swim away from surface
>move around when suddenly the shore explodes with what sounded like a dozen huge fish

So the question is, Do i now fish that area, or move on because they got spooked away?
>>
>>1017519
Oh yeah, old school reels and the full sized "trolling" reels were geared low as shit. I was referring to the modern low profile "bass" baitcasters. There are a small few under 5.5 (Abu makes a 5.3) but industry standard seems to be 6.3, with a ton of 6.6s and 7.1s on the market compared to the number of 6.1s and 5.8s.
>>
>>1017473
They're comparable but noisier and heavier thanks to all metal gears and housings instead of plastic. Keep them greased and they'll run for-fucking-ever. Only big worry is any chrome-plated zinc parts. The chrome likes to flake off after a few decades and then the zinc will start corroding like hell and break.
After that, good luck finding spare parts for a 50-year-old reel.
>>
>>1017345
What do you think they were hitting on the surface?
Usually it's flies. In which case, you should have been fly fishing.

>>1017536
Depends on you.

Would anyone like to guess which minorities did this? There were probably 5 or other bass this side just thrown on the side of the road.

>>1017505
I don't think this really matters for bass.

>If you're worm fishing, you might like a slower retrieve, but if you're throwing crankbaits, you want speed

This is actually the opposite of what most pros do. They usually want a higher ratio to pick up slack in the line before setting the hook with worms and generally their cranking rods are in the 5.1-6.8 range.

I personally prefer 7.1 or higher for everything bass wise. I've never felt like I didn't have enough cranking power, and I use the rod to muscle fish if I need to. If I get a dedicated saltwater memecaster it would probably be in the 6.1 area.

*** I'm not saying you're wrong if that's what you use to fish. Just saying what the pros do. ***

1. Why are they bloody? Do you have to clobber them before icing them or are they just bleeders? We were catching them on fairly large marabou jigs and I don't remember any of them bleeding at all (and we caught several hundred and kept like 2 dozen)
2. How the fuck do you make them edible? I distinctly remember ours being coated in a layer of fish slime that'd put saltwater catfish to shame, and them tasting like river mud even when filleted

Yo f&t, been lurking about half a year now and getting back in the groove of things. New to bass fishing though and could use some tips. Here's the conditions I'll be fishing under when my 3rd shift ends:

Read best time for bass is right before a period of rain, and its set to rain at about 1pm in southern Indiana for the large part of the next 5 days. Fishing on griffy lake if you want to look it up, the entire thing is mostly 5 foot with decent vegetation in the water. Will have boat ($8/hour is a steal, have to paddle though and no anchor). Was going to topwater, switching a popper and frog for what works. Caught a 9" small mouth about 5 yards off shore and had a few other hits.

Will the popper and frog be enough? Anything I should look out for and pick up tackle wise before going out? Hope to be on the lake at about 830. Thanks

I wasn't a huge fan of the action on the Sellus rods, but they actually seem nice if you want a stiff bass rod for cranks or jigs. I like the reel seat design on those Shimanos. And everybody seems to like the Abu rods. The Revo S reels have been on sale lately too and that would match up nice with that Veritas rod.
>>
>>1017810
I could get a Shimano rod/reel for $60 with this sale but the bearing count is so low on the reels. Is it worth it or should I listen to Fenwick Man and get the HMG/Pflueger President XT combo?

That being said, a girl is gonna have to actually catch a fish or two to really enjoy it.

You've all been great in answering my questions about rods and reels over the last few days, so thanks.

Now could you help me put together a list of tackle I should buy for the fishing I'll be doing? Want a pretty comprehensive kit that's still small enough to cram into a saddle bag.

Here's a chart I threw together of the fish found in lakes in the areas I'll be fishing in, published by the state game and fish dept. Focus on the stuff in the "Summer Months" area for now as we're getting into the hottest parts of the year where I'll be traveling North to cooler weather.

If you don't want to look at the chart, its mostly various trout species, crappie, sunfish, and some large mouth bass and channel catfish.

>Mostly trout (rainbow, brown, apache, brook, cutthroat)
>Lots of crappie, sunfish, some yellow perch.
>A good amount of bass (mostly large mouth, some small mouth)
>Occasional channel catfish, walleye, northern pike.

I've got a light rod that will be wearing a 20-25 size reel and 6-10lb braid, and an ultra light that will be wearing lighter braid probably. I assume I'll probably be fucked if I hook a catfish or pike, so I'm not too worried about that.
>>
>>1018077

>>
>>1018137
I would recommend inline spinners. They will catch pretty much everything on your list, are decently cheap, and are very compact.

As an example, this pack would be good for bass, brown trout, crappie, and larger sunfish. It's $7.

I mean, lures and baits and such are really small and it's easy to pack a shitload of them. Shooting for something around this size probably to hold my hooks, weights, leaders, and lures.

I've got tons of little pockets and nooks I can stuff things like extra line and various accessories into so they aren't taking up space in my tackle box.

I'd probably still tell you pic related aside from maybe a couple small trout things. But all of those fish are predators so mainly you will just want to imitate smaller prey. Rapala-type baits of different sizes, assorted inline spinners, lots of jigheads in all sizes with grubs and minnows and shit to go on them, and then your bass stuff.

You don't have to go crazy at first. A few rooster tails, a couple hard baits like Original Rapalas, and the jigheads and grubs. See what works, see what other people are using, and build from there.
>>
Am I a cuckold for continuing to go to the same fishing hole despite not catching anything in several dozen hours of fishing?
>>
>>1018152
Ehh, I would probably reccommend a 3600 size bag or backpack. If you are trying to use any bass-sized baits, they won't fit worth a damn in there.
>>

Sinkers are gonna be very compact as well, unless you're using 1oz+ bank sinkers.

Unless you're using fluoro leaders there's no reason to take extra line with you, especially freshwater where the risk of getting spooled is basically nonexistent.

>>1018155
If you're being literal about the time frame then yeah you're a cuck.

>>
>>1018111
The rod isn't what makes the rig so much as the line.
The weight of the line flying through the air when you cast is what loads your rod and gives you the casting distance you need.
>>
>>1018164
There are fish that's for sure but no lure presentation that isn't a worm on a hook works.

>>1018162

Sounds good, I'll put it on the list.

What's the best option for fishing where I can just sit and chill while watching my pole? Some small bobbers? Sorry I'm so fucking retarded. I haven't fished since I was like 12 and all I did was cast whatever my dad set me up with. He taught me a lot of things, but fishing wasn't one of them.

>>1018160

The kit I posted is actually a little smaller than what I'd like to find, I just need to keep everything smaller than like, a loaf of bread.

>>1018163

Mostly trout it seems like. I caught one a couple years back by making a barricade in a small stream, and stabbing it with a spear I made from a broken arrow and a stick. It was really small, but felt good anyway.

I get pretty autistic when I'm kitting out for something new, but once I feel confident that I'm prepared the autism goes away pretty nicely. You should see the notebooks I have from building my PC and AR15.
>>
>>1018171
The Sunfish in my pond have just started autisically digging their nests. So for me the Bass haven't even started making their beds.

>>1018172
I dunno how to pick inlines, basically every style ever made has caught fish. The ones I took the pic of are what I use, they're cheap and catch the comparatively stupid stocked trout in our trout parks as well as lmb and smb.

Pretty much your only options for sitting and watching your pole are gonna be live or prepared (doughbait, salmon eggs, preserved fish, cut bait) bait.

Start with the basics: white with silver blade, black with silver blade, blue with silver blade and something with a gold or brass blade. Those few colors work almost anywhere under any conditions.
Brand is up to you. I like rooster tails, Bepis swears by Mepps aglias, and even the cheaper store brand baits can work. Just fish them and see.

>>1018173
The water temp must be just right for panfish now. Bass like the water to be a little warmer, so they should be bedding in the next couple of weeks.
>>
>>1018218

Hadn't heard of them until you mentioned it. Looked them up, they seem pretty neat. Definitely something I would be interested in trying. Are they mostly for bottom feeding fish, or would they work with live baits on a bobber or something? Have you used them?

I'm in it to catch fish to eat while I'm out doing my nomad shit, and I'm not picky about taste/texture/whatever. It'll all taste fine fried in a pan with some spices and a beer to wash it down.

Sorry, new to this, been going out every day for an hour or two and seeing the fish jump a bunch but not going for any of my topwaters. Don't really want carp even though there is a shit ton due to flooding.

Any southern ontario guys here that want to give me some tips for beers?

rem oil lets me down (evaporates) and hoppes is just kerosine. if you really want to protect it, i reccomend balistol
its great for protection (they did a test where they oiled a gun and left it for something like 5 years in a shed and came back and it was as perfect as when they put it there) but it's "biodegradable", non toxic, and water soluable, so if you were camping with carbon steel you could wash the oil off the blade in the water, use it on the food, then re-oil it
another thing is, since its water soluable, even if you oil the blade while it's still wet, the oil will pull the water off the blade, and when the water evaporates it will be coated in oil still. i wouldnt put the oil/water mix on the knife then straight in the sheath, but it would probably be fine. the only downside to it is the smell

Agree that combo sucks, but telescoping rods have come a long way. There are some nice ones on Amazon in the $20 range.

I went and got some yardsale finds, so i'm good now.
Wish I thought to get bite alarms before, they're such a neat idea.
