Sometimes they swallow the hook or get hooked kinda sideways, so there's blood occasionally. As far as the taste, in my opinion, speckled trout are some of the best eating fish you can catch. We always filet them and pan fry or meuniere. They always taste clean.

What is that black thing on the tip? >>1018240

I got that pic from google. But I'm pretty sure the black thing is a rubber stopper that keeps the weight from sliding up the line. I don't use one personally, because I think it defeats the purpose of Texas rigging. The action of the weight sliding up and down the line as you jig it is what makes the rig so effective in my opinion.

Today it was warm enough for no waders, went with old shoes and socks.

Any way around pebbles getting into your shoes? I suppose wearing something like sandals.
>>
So I go fishing at the same spot every day for an hour or two at lunch.

Always see a ton of fish jump but don't catch anything, everyone else there just throws out carp and catfish bait and wait but thats boring so I've been trying topwaters but nada.

Any tips? It's an outlet creek off lake ontario so lots of fish and what not of all types.

those fish jumping could be carp. They wont hit topwater lures really. Ive had carp hit lures like lil grubs and tubes before if you're after them but dont want to sit and wait. You need to be pretty slow with the lures however and ride them on the bottom.
Do that and you'll get other fish like bass before a carp anyways.

Lil minnows jump too. Today I saw like 5 lil minnows chasing each other jumping ontop of the water. Either that or running away from a bigger fish.
>>
>>1018287
The fish jumping are probably carp is the thing.

debatably it is better to keep the small ones. i mean, think about it, if you have a lake, and you only kill fish that grow to be big, but the small ones survive, the entire population is going to shrink, because the dink gene will be successful. however if you only keep medium fish, the dinks have time to grow, but then the adult dinks get harvested, and the genes for big fish are progressed through the gene pool. im not going to comment on weather or not what he did was legal, or if "tasting better" was the only motive, but it is something to consider

Got an ugly stik gx2 mh 7 spinning combo. Gonna use it for some salt water beach and bay fishing.

What line test should I use?

Will 7 foot be fine?

How hard do I wash it after fishing. Ugly stik site says it's fresh and salt water.
>>
>>1018644
You'll need to rinse it if you fish in salt water.

Don't sit there and blast the reel straight with the hose, that drives sand and shit into the reel body and strips off your lubricating oil. Mist it and at least shake but preferably wipe it dry.
>>
>>1018647
Do I disassemble the reel?

Can I do that without stripping line?

Also what weight line do yiu recommend? I'm gonna have dicks spool it for me.
>>
>>1018648
I use 15 lb braid but before that 10-12 lb mono did me well. You don't really need to take it apart, I'll usually just dump a bottle of water over the reel after I'm done fishing for the day. Make sure to lube it every couple of trips.
>>
>>1018648
No, don't disassemble or de-line the reel. Just either use a misting nozzle on your sink/shower/garden hose or pour water from a glass/bottle over it.

Lube it every few trips.

Fuck that place. I can't stand the shit. Living close to the ocean, the weather is so steady. A warm front means 2F or 3F higher if you are close to the ocean and a really cold front is like -10F at night and -5F in the day. 75F and sunny all winter, 85F and sunny with a 40% chance of an afternoon T-storm in the summer.

On another note, what do you guys think of baits with chartreuse tips? Effective? Difference maker?
>>
>>1018760
Ive never once had success with them. Seems to me that the areas i fish produce better with just a solid color vs solid with Chartreuse.

The sunfish will harass the absolute shit out of it though
>>
>>1018459

Big fish prey more on small fish than medium or small fish do, so taking them out leaves fewer predators for young fish.
>>
>>1018789
Bass (lmb, smb, rockbass) will attempt to eat things up to half their size on a regular basis. Sometimes larger (explains why I keep catching 3-4" dinks on 4" Rapalas or full-size spinnerbaits).

There needs to be a massive predation of the big fish to make much of a difference on small-fish survivability.
>>
>>1018712
I don't know how I feel about this. Vaseline will melt and either not lube properly or drip and get your hands disgusting and greasy with shit you can't rinse off in the water. You should really use some sort of specially made reel/gear grease.

>>1018814
I'm not sure if they're trying to eat it so much as they're just trying to kill it and take it out of the gene pool/competition. I have no idea if that is true or not but I read something about it a few years ago and it makes sense so I'll take it.
>>
>>1018818
The number of times I've had a 5" swimbait outright swallowed and gut-hooked by 1.5-2lb bass says otherwise. They do try to eat them, whether or not that was their primary intent (why kill and then not eat it?).

So, has anyone legitimately hooked a bullfrog before?

I had a big fat fucker smash a black topwater popper today well away from the shore. They're literally a week out of season, or I'd be having frog legs for dinner :(
>>
So I went out to get creek chub on fly just for the hell of it before it rained, and I see two carp feeding in a slow flat. So I think "damn that will be a hell of a fight on my 4 weight"
A long way from the bank I frantically get my rod ready and pick a fly before sneaking up to the bank. Just as im getting ready to casy, the sky opens up, and the fish disappear
I was so annoyed

You're overthinking this.
You do know what the official lube spec for Enfield rifles in WWI was, don't you?
>100% pure petrolatum
aka Vaseline.
It's just grease.
The only difference is that this grease doesn't have any other toxic bits in it so you can put it on your body.
As for the special space magic chemicals that you don't know how they work, you don't need them for something as low-performance as a fishing reel.
All you need from your grease is two things
>is oily enough to keep your reel's gears lubricated
>doesn't mix with water

Literally ANY grease will do that, including Vaseline. It'll work, I promise. I've done it, and my reels didn't blow up.

>At the same price point as that Zebco reel, a well chosen open spinning reel will offer:
"Well chosen" are weasel words, denoting a judgement call made by you. There's literally no way to win this argument, since it depends on YOUR judgement, which, since we're having this discussion, is biased towards your point of view.

Also, a Zebco 33's price point is $15 at Walmart. I dare you to find a "well chosen" spinning reel for that money.

>Better casting.
Depends on the rod, not the reel. Using comparable rods, they'll cast comparable distances.

Zebcos are plenty smooth, especially when comparing apples to apples and looking at $15 spinning reels.

>>
>>1019178
White bass and crappie predominantly eat other fish (minnows). You can have great success fishing live bait with them, which it looks like you're set up for, but you need to find a bait shop that carries it.

Nightcrawlers and that packaged dough bait will do well enough for catfish, and if you ever feel frisky go buy some chicken livers or gizzards at walmart.

Don't have perch here, I've caught them walleye fishing on trips up north on jigs but that was accidental.

Toppest of keks. It will work tho.

Just put half a nightcrawler on the hook and set it out there like 18" under the bobber. Can't fuck it up too much.

That Magic Bait tho... ehh... you will have that sitting half-used in the bottom of your tackle box for years. There's only a few artificial baits like that really worth using. Otherwise for smaller fish like perch and white bass, if you aren't using lures, go with nightcrawlers or small minnows.

also focus on you paddling stroke. watch the blade enter and exit the stroke. you want a clean entry and exit to maximize your paddling stroke. buy the rings if your paddle doesnt already have them..
for trabsport i take my stuff out of the kayak
including the anchor. i paddle with my anchor near my feet.

you can use foam golf practice balls to plug your scuppers if you decide to use them.
the internal bags arent waterproof and its common on cheaper kayaks that the hatch will leak. youll have to test that one yursef but i recommend stuffing thing you dont want wet into a drybox-bag or some quality ziplocks

So, I'm going backpacking in Scotland soon. I would love to catch some trout for dinner. It should work about fine since I'll be sleeping along the shoreline of rivers a lot.

Can someone recommend me a small but decent rod that I can easily carry? Something with a MOLLE pouch would be ideal.
>>
>>1019467
Just remember that you will be better off getting a 3pc or 4pc travel rod instead of a shitty telescoping rod. Tons of companies offer travel rods.
>>
>>1019468
Cheers, so something like this would do?
>>
>>1019470
Yeah that's straight. I hate Ugly Stiks because I fish with lures and they have no action but it will probably work well for you.
>>
>>1019483
>they have no action
What does that mean exactly? I am no expect but I will be fishing for trout and I believe that requires lures aswell?

It's hard to explain until you play with them. I think Ugly Stiks use a lot of fiberglass in the rods while most others are more graphite. The fiberglass isn't quite as sensitive as the graphite normally and it flexes a little more than a graphite rod of the same size. The Ugly Stik will still work for lures, but it's nice having a fast graphite rod when you're fishing for picky bass and want to feel every little thing on the end of the line.

But an upside with rods like the Ugly Stik is they can take a bit more abuse. If you bend a graphite rod the wrong way, it's easier to snap them than a fiberglass rod. So that's why I think that rod you posted might be good for hiking since you aren't trying to be a KVD™ bass fisherman with 60,000 different lures.
>>
Hey guys so I realized I should be letting my jigs sit a bit stiller in the water when fishing. Be it for trout, smallies, etc while in a river and also still pools.

I was looking into a dropshot when I realized a bobber would probably be better since im never fishing too deep, keep hardware off the bottom. But I also figure that a bobber might spook some fish? Do the clear ones, aka bubbles, work well for my situation?
>>
any one in commiefornia go to lake san antonio or nacimiento?
>>
>>1018240

Not a fly.
>>
>>1019486
Ugly sticks have a literal metal fucking spring in them on top of all the fiberglass.
>>
>>1019522
>>1019484
Yes should also mention the fiberglass tends to be heavier than graphite. But if it's just a 5'-6' light trout rod, the weight difference won't be much between two similar rods made of different materials.
>>
Im pretty new to fishing. Went a handful of times last year with a cheap $30 dollar Walmart rod, was not satisfied with it. Want to fish more this summer. I want a nice rod+reel combo but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I want to spend $100 dollars or less. I will mainly be fishing lakes for trout and bass. Also, what bait and/or hooks are best for bass?
>>
>>1019525

FTFY

Pflueger President combo, any of the Lew's combos for $70-$100, any of the Abu combos in that range...

And for bass if you want to do live bait, shiners with something like a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook but who the hell uses live bait for bass?

>>1019529
I don't think anon is spending $150+ on his travel rod
>>
>>1019531
Oh yeah I forgot poor people exist. If you aren't spending 1k on a 4 piece fly rod why even bother?
>>
I'm confused about flukes. Do you generally use the paddle tails as a swimbait with a steady retrieve? And split tails as a jerkbait, rigged weightless on a EWG hook?
>>
>>1019527
find a combo rod on sale
>>
>>1019535
That's usually how I do it. I always have a lot of success with just slow retrieving a white or shiny looking paddletail
>>
>>1019535
Oh also. I'll add that you have to hook the split tail really perfectly. It's very easy to give it a real bad action that looks stiff and lifeless. But they're both decent options for murky water big bass imo
>>
>>1019535
That's the general of it. You can also do a few twitch during a paddle tail retrieve, or retrieve really slow with long pause. The paddle tail doesn't have as nice of a jerk action like the split tail and just swim straight fast, but it will still draw strike. Of course, the split tail can't be steady retrieve most of the time because it wouldn't swim straight at all. Both can be rigged on weightless or weighted EWG. You can also use a regulat\r weighted jig head as well if you aren't fishing where there is weed and you worry about missed hook up with EWG. However, the lure will sink more head first instead of horizontal with a jig head. I use weighted for saltwater because the water is a lot rougher so I want the jerkbait to hit the bottom faster. They can also be rigged for drop shot as well.
>>
>>1019089
Or you could spend $10 more and get a reel that will cast 2-3 times as far, be more pleasant to use, not stop working in a month, and a decent drag system. The only people who should use a spin cast reel are very young children, the advantages of even cheap spinning reels are far too great to use a spin cast.

Every single spin cast reel I have ever owned stops casting well and then will only cast like 10 feet because the line gets caught inside the reel on shit that isn't working right. I use one for catching bait when I'm kayaking but other than that it's spinning all the way.
>>
>>1019535
I think. I do paddle tails if I'm swimming em and split tails for drop shots or Texas rigs on the bottom. I always do much better with paddles tails tho.
>>
>>1019548
I would disagree about hooking a split tail perfectly being absolute necessary though. The split tail action is pretty wild in multiple directly so as long as you aren't completely off on rigging it, it would do fine. The only important thing is not going too far into the body with the EWG hook so that you make it too stiff, but that's pretty easy because it can be simple as picking a hook the right size would do. Rigging a paddle tail straight is more important since you want it to swim straight and not track one side or roll badly.
>>
The drag cap to my baitcaster has gone missing, how fucked am I?
>>
>>1019535
Yes. Split tails are good for flippin and bouncing the bottom too.

>>1019556

Which reel is it? If it's a cheaper on like the Silver Max, I know exactly what you mean. On the better ones, the spool tension knobs click and stay in place.

But that's a big reason I like Abu- it's so easy to get parts from basically any reel they have ever made.

So line gets tangled up outside the reel, you just reel it back in, and now it's THE REEL's fault for not magically untangling the gigantic knot you wound into the mechanism?
No wonder I don't get the kind of problems everyone else does with spincasts.

Lol I'm mostly kidding. Real high pressure and the fish will be lazy and won't want to hit loud and big stuff. Otherwise if the bass are nesting, you gotta run those fuckers right past their nest.
>>
>>1019407

The plugs just keep water from pooling in key areas. You want some water to be able to drain because you WILL get water in there.
>>1019407
>Will the internal hull fill with water and these bags will keep shit dry?

That's the idea.

That's part of kayaking.

>>Can I keep an anchor inside the craft or do you load that stuff seperately?

I load everything separately. My kayak has a spacious interior so there's a chance it could slide around into some inaccessible crevice.
