It's funny because I DO have a center console flats boat but I normally fish from my $500 kayak with my $50 walmart spinning reels.

It's almost as if you don't need expensive shit to have fun, you're the type of person who if you lose a 3 lb bass you break your rod over your knee and throw it in the water.

Impossible. If you don't have a 4k drive kayak with a 4k fish finder then you'll never find the fish and if you do, you'll just flip over when you hook one and then your kayak will sink.

New to fishing and I love lures but have absolutely trash success with them.

Can I not just chuck it as far as I can and reel it in?

What am I doing wrong.

Fishing small lakes and ponds in NE Ohio
>>
>>1007338
What are you fishing for?
>>
Looking for a kayak for small lake/pond fishing and maybe the occasional river once I get comfortable with it. Anyone have any recommendations in the sub $1000 range? Been looking at Ascend kayaks and they seem pretty decent for the price.
>>
>>1007338
>Can I not just chuck it as far as I can and reel it in?
You can with the three middle baits and the mepps. Not for the rest unless you want less action
>>
>>1007338
This kinda >>1007347

But even the spinners, you normally want to rip em a bit and let them drop for a split second then rip and repeat.
>>
>>1007345
Anything, everything, something.

100% shore fishing, not going to Lake Erie.

I just hate bait, or using soft plastics besides grubs or worms
>>
>>1007338

To best understand artificial, you have to understand what they're trying to imitate and how they work in the water.

With spinnerbaits and spinners, yes, you pretty much chuck them and real them in. They're fleeing baitfish with flashing sides.

Same with your curly tail soft bait. Just real it in. If it has a weighted head, you might want to try bouncing it off the bottom or "jigging" by fishing vertically.

With top water baits, it's best to twitch and reel a bit, then pause. Then twitch and reel a bit. Then pause. Those open mouthed ones specifically are designed for a quick jerk or two, which creates a popping action and sound. They're wounded baitfish struggling along the surface or some clumsy animal that landed in the water and is trying to get out. Frogs are... frogs, trying to get from lilypad to lilypad, reed to reed, or one piece of cover to the next.

With hard jerkbaits (your minnow thing with the lip) they're supposed to be little baitfish. As above, the best presentation involves a retrieve with the regular twitches at the end of the rod and pauses. Like a stunned or dying baitfish,

The crankbait, your black lure, is more or less just reeled in. The longer the bill, the deeper it dives. It helps to know how deep the fish are.

Most predatory fish are ambush predators. They hang out near cover: weed lines, transitions between deep and shallow water, boulders, etc and lie in wait in order to ambush easy looking targets that come by. Try casting past these structures, then slowly work your bait towards and past it, making sure to make occasional pauses. In the case of lures that float, the pauses may be anywhere between 1 to 10 or even 20 seconds. Change it up.

Normally, the warmer the weather and earlier/later in the day, the more likely fish will hit top waters. You may have to reel in faster or slower depending on how the fish feel that day.

I think it's weird that Mepps is the generic name for inline spinners on this board.

I've only ever heard 'em called Rooster Tails.
>>
>>1007350
Along with all the other replies I'd recommend finding out what kind of fish there are in the lake you're fishing and google good lures for those kinds. And then buy a few. Yours look pretty well used and lures are pretty cheap.
>>
>>1007357
That spinner literally says mepps on the blade dumb fuck. Rooster tail is a different brand name and has narrower blades and cylinder like weighted bodies on the wire.

The Ascend 128 and 12T are very solid kayak for under 1k. The Perception Pescador pro, Wilderness Systems Tarpon, and many Jackson kayaks are very nice.
>>
>>1007366

If I could go back in time, I probably would have gotten a used Ascend 12 instead of my new Pescador Striker. I do like the striker, though. I've done some minor modifications to it that I wouldn't have felt more comfortable doing to a more expensive kayak given my inexperience.

Bruh Ive been looking at one of these, but I think I'm gonna go with the Ocean Kayak Malibu XL. It's a tandem, so I can take the grill or a buddy out with me. But you can also only put one seat in the middle and use it like a normal yak. I don't ever seriously fish out of my yak really so it's mostly be for just paddling anyway.

alright so I'm gonna nut up and fish a real reservoir/lake.

It is however on a state park, so I ask, what are the chances of being asked for my License?
I am aware the money goes towards conservation and fully intend to renew mine, but I just really want to get out tomorrow and won't have time to fish and get a new license.

is it something if asked by a park ranger, I can laugh it off and say I wasn't aware it was expired, or is it something I genuinely could get more than likely fined for?
100% catch and release btw
>>

>>

Ohio
>>

Just go to Walmart and buy one. I have never been asked for my license my entire life but I still buy them because $17.50 a year is still cheaper than some $500 fine and losing all of my gear.

My dad unironicaly has been shilling size 3-4 red and white Mepps™ ever since I knew how to fish. I can't remember a single time I didn't have one in my box. They arnt that fun to fish compaired tonsomenother stuff but sometimes when you have tried everything else or you just want to relax and throw some casts I tie on a Mepps™. A best bait
>>
>>1007380
It looks like you need one. And your chances of being asked for your license in a park is definitely higher than somewhere else I would assume.
>>
>>1007376

Life must be hard when a fishing license costs more than your rod, reel, and dignity.
>>
>>1007385
Yee boi!

There is something special about them. Even when Rooster Tails or your SavageMegaBass memebait aren't doing shit, tie on a Mepps™ and you will land a 3lb bass within a couple casts.
>>
>>1007376
Licenses are like $15 at Walmart. Just buy one and support the parks you're using.

if an expired License is as big of a deal as it is made out to be I will not tempt fate and not fish.
>>
>>1007381

I thinks it's pretty unlikely they'll take your stuff if you're just C&R. Of course it depends on the location and the individual game warden, but I still wouldn't risk it.

Also
>$17.50 for a license

not under a bobber, was casting it out and retrieving but though just pausing it a bit would help change things up. Turns out leaving it in the light current was enough for a trout to zone in on it. I was upstream from the lure and so the current just held enough tension to keep it afloat, if that helps picture it better.
>>
>>1007394
the Hassle is I simply wouldn't have time to bounce between Walmart, which is opposite of this Reservoir, and try and beat some bad weather.
Also a matter of trying to make it to class on time, but I guess I'll be the responsible adult and wait for a License and go to class
>>
>>1007398

>>

>>
>>1007376

One time I just happened to notice my license had expired while buying tackle at Academy. 30 minutes later, I'm fishing Ladybird Lake and 10 minutes later, the Game Warden comes around and checks everyone's licences.

Last month my Dad and I took a boat onto Lake Somerville. When we landed, the Game Warden was waiting and checked our licenses. That one was pretty funny as I had to sort through my previous years license plus the temporary ones I got from Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Carolina from a recent road trip.

I've been checked about 3 or 4 times. All in the past 5 years. And I've been fishing for over 20.

I mostly agree ther than this. I've got $12 shimano rear drags that have lasted me 20 years. I don't use it in the salt often though.
$100-200 should get a reel that will last a lifetime if cared for.
$50-100 may get you the same but I've also got $60 pieces of shit (skeet reese carbon) that were list 120 or some shit.

>@anon asking about MTB/LTB
I've done both for the last year.
LTB Inshore @19.99 wasn't worth it. Not terrible but bait presentation wasn't native to my area. Switched to fly box and 1st one was shit. If 2nd is crap I'm cancelling.
MTB did trout box. Have been 99% happy. No shit, no filler. Well worth the 15 each month.

>>1007163

>>
>>1007416
I can cast either hand but prefer right
>>
>>1007418
Impressive, I can't even open a door with my left hand.
>>
>>1007405
I have a completely uneducated guess theory. It's from when casting reels were first made. When they came out they were mostly used for soaking bait so you weren't going to be holding the rod the entire time, or working lure. And most people being right handed would prefer to do the "fine" motor control part of the fight (reeling) and the large rod movements to the left hand.

If there's an actual reason I'd like to know.

As for low profile casters it's less awkward to switch hands than to move your hand up to palm the reel. If you don't palm the reel it doesn't really matter.

>>1007414
+1

There's no reason to really switch with a spinning reel imo
>>
How do you guys deal with hooks inside you landing net? When I land a fish, the hook often gets in the netting. Rubber nets dont get this i assume, nor is it a problem with barbless hooks.

No. You're entirely wrong. Stocked fish have not been fed ground up tuna waste and other big game fish species in a very long time. Unless you're eating some mystery south east Asian or Chinese farmed fish you're just lying on the internet.

They even stopped doing that for salmon.
>>
>>1007496
the majority of trout feed is ground fish meal and ground bird meal
bird meal is feathers and bones
fish meal usually comes from something like haddock, pollock, or even cod or salmon is also a big one ( depending on what brand of feed and quality you buy)
>>
>>1007501
Nope. It's either menhaden or pollack in the United states. Fish meal comes from no other sources here unless research uses a different mix for study trials.

US raised fish have less heavy metal and organic toxins like pcbs than wild fish. It's a fact. Stop spreading misinformation.

how do I find a stocked lake or pond to fish in sick of not even getting a single bite
>>
>>1007524
Stock lake/pond isn't always easy though. Some lake, especially free public lake, as soon as they get stocks, they get swamped with fisherman AND pelican/bird in a week and take out like 80-90% of the stock fishin a week.

Lakes that are big enough, have enough cover, and have enough stocking maintain a high stock fish population usually have entrance fees.

Some saltwater fishing is really easy, especially smaller fishes. Do you have saltwater access nearby?

It has to be artificially high or else they'd have to impose quotas on how many fishermen they could allow on top of bag limits to prevent the unnatural amount of predators from wiping out the natural population of fish for that sized body of water.

Well if they aren't sustainable then it's even better to fish for them. You won't be hurting any natural fish population then

Little anonymous bragging here
The FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) has competitions called Slams; Catch 4 types of bass in a year, catch all types of bream in a year, and this - Catch these 3 exotic species in a day.
Oscar Cichlid, Peacock Bass (Cichlid), and Mayan Cichlid. Caught all within an 8 hour period across the entire county.

>having a lot of success, getting bites nearly every cast
>fun time
>about an hour and a half in
>cast my lure out like I have 100 times before
>line snaps and lure goes flying out into the creek

what the fuck happened? does shit like that happen on occasion or am I just a really shitty fisherman? I wondered if it was my knot but my line was frayed on the end like it snapped. using 8lb mono trilene xl and a 1/8 oz Jake's, none of the fish I reeled in were very big.
>>
>>1007650

I can do it. Or use parts of it and type up something for the Pastebin along the lines of "choosing the right bait".

Did the line get caught up or something on the cast? You would be suprised how much shock even a 1/4oz lure can put on the line if you try to throw a long cast and for some reason it get caught and stops mid-air.

question I had asked earlier, but I have a more thought out one.
They stock trout and catfish here, does this mean these fish survive (at least the catfish) over Ohio's cold winter?

EG. because they can't spawn successfully here, does that mean they don't have a chance to grow?

will all the fishes here be the same size as they were put in?
What are the chances of them being successful and growing to a considerable size?
>>
>>1007693
Channel cats here in NJ do fine in this canal which gets pretty hot in the summer.

I guess they stock them because people eat them + they won't overpopulated cause of their spawning as you stated.

Trout do better in the cold actually, upper 70F water is lethal to them. If the trout can find cold water (often very deep in a lake or in a flowing spring water) that's why some reservoirs that are unnaturally deep often get lake trout in them.

You can't see it, but casting, reeling, and abrasion from tiny fish teeth, cover, and rod guides causes weakness in line that builds up over time. This is especially true of mono line, where a knick, pinch, or kink van severely compromise the line at that point. Also make sure to keep knots wet with water or spit before tightening.

Braid and fluorocarbon are much more wear and tear resistant. Braid sometimes maddeningly so.
>>
>>1007613
Gut it, rip the skin off, throw it in a pan with some oil and salt and pepper, fry it until you get the meat a little crispy on both sides. Eat it off the bone. You should probably get a few of those to make it worth it.
>>
>>1007737
>Braid and fluorocarbon are much more wear and tear resistant. Braid sometimes maddeningly so.

eh braid is less abrasion resistant for suresies. It's way better for everything else though.
>>
>>1007679
Stripers in lake is pretty tricky. If it's your first time, don't expect a fish unless you have a guide or someone experienced with you on a boat. I think either dropshot a zoom super fluke or throwing a lipless crank would be a good point to start off. If you lucky enough to see boiling then throw a top water popper.
>>
>>1007750
Ive taken 5lb Peacock bass around pillars, taking drag like a racecar, with braid, and I've never broken a fish off. I lose fish from 2 things - I cast too hard and the hook wasnt tight enough, or the fish bites everything but the lips off. Never once have I lost a fish from a broken line with braid.
>>
>>1007754
Now that you mention it, I don't think I have ever actually lost a fish on braid either. The closest was when I hooked the monster snek on 15lb and he ran out the line like crazy and then I was making a little progress until a couple min in he took another run and wrapped the line around something underwater and completely wrapped me up. There is some pipe underwater near where I hooked him and I think he tied me up on that.

But I have ripped largemouth out of some heavy weeds too. I hit a ~15" peacock on 10lb braid and that fucker came out of the water with a few pounds of weed no problem. For some reason I feel like braid's breaking point is more predictable than mono or flouro. Best guess is because of how well braid works with the palomar knot while the other lines tend to lose a lot more strengrh at the knot.

I was talkin to a guy yesterday right at US-27 and Griffin and he said he was getting Oscars in Holiday Park. But he was some redneck from Bama so they may have been Mayans and he was mistaken. But I could go to Weston and hit a Mayan, a Jaguar, and a small Peacock real quick.

I think the bass and bream would take some driving up north tho. I haven't gotten any bream besides regular bluegill down here. One time I got one with a tiny bit of orange on the belly but it was still really light in color and had those vertical black stripes like the other boring bluegill.
>>
>>1007787

If you're looking for oscars hit Alligator Alley. I've had luck at the first marked rest stop past Weston on the south side of the road. I've seen peacocks and caught mayans at the same spot.

Don't bother with the rest stop with the fire station and the boat launches further down the road. It's an okay spot but I've only ever caught sunfish and tilapia there.

>>1007754
I believe you, but it's still less resistant than flouro. If you leave a Texas rig tied on there for awhile you'll notice where the weight is rubbing it.

I don't think I've ever had any line that wasn't for a UL break when I've had a fish on.

>>
>>1007805

Even when it actually frays, braided stays damn strong because only individual fibers break as opposed to mono.

But just because you can see the damage more clearly doesn't mean it's that much weaker.

I have had mono break while casting heavy rigs or trying to land larger fish that decide to roll over or make that last desperate run before you land them. With braid, the hook gets ripped out more often than anything.
>>
well, I am rather disappointed, super stoked to check out this state park lake, but the entire thing is covered in dense brush, and there were only 3 dinky docks.

Is this just the life I'll live without owning waders or a boat?
>>
>>1007812
you dont need waders just walk into the water dawg
>>
>>1007811
I'm not staying it's still not strong, especially with heavier test braids, but for going over rocks with something that's gonna be touching the bottom I'll pick flouro every time.

I think it's more of a problem with lighter and softer braids, which is what I mostly use.

>I have had mono break while casting heavy rigs
I had one spook that absolutely killed it at this lake I don't know if it was the color or what, but one night I stopped by the lake before a movie to just cast around a bit with it. First cast in I launch that spook out there and I just see the spook fly off into the night and my reel got a big nest it lmao. I'm 100% sure that was from me not retying for two weeks. That was with braid. The only other lures I've lost like that were on mono when I was new and couldn't into knots.
>>
>>1007817
I think in that case, braids might be more suspectible to micro damage such as constantly going over rock, but less likely to get cut from one single strong cut compared to mono. I don't know anout fluoro though.
>>
>>1007812
>Is this just the life I'll live without owning waders or a boat?

I was once like you. Then I got a kayak and things are awesome. You can launch from damn near anywhere, get into all those coves/creeks and structure that bigger boats can't access and you can fish the shore from places shore fisherman can't.
>>
>>1007815
But what if a candiru crawls up his leg and into his peehole.
>>
>>1007838
that's the best case scenario
>>
>>1007820
>braids might be more suspectible to micro damage such as constantly going over rock, but less likely to get cut from one single strong cut compared to mono

Yeah that's what I was trying to say lol.

Flouro is suppose to be better than braid for stuff like that and I believe it. I don't really ever notice any nicks or rough spots on my flouro, but I'll notice braid fraying if I'm lazy and don't retie everyonce in awhile or I'm going over the tops of big boulders or something. Like I said earlier it's never been an issue for me, so I'm definitely not trying to say you should never use braid around rocks or anything. Just that if you fish rip rap or rocks in general quite a bit I'd go with flouro just to prevent a spot wearing in the braid over time.

I like flouro a lot in general too, it's worth trying out on a meme caster. Wouldn't suggest it on a spinning reel.

>>1007809

Try and talk to a manager. I think their margins on lures are pretty good so maybe you can do it but idk if this is the best time of year since shit is actually moving. A smaller place will def be easier than a big chain place, but even big stores are normally willing to deal if you drop some $$$.
>>
>>1007864
You would be suprised. People don't realize that major chain stores will give you deals if you talk to a manager and act right. I learned that from buying shit at Best Buy with my dad. When he would go in there and buy a $1900 laptop and some other shit he would always get them to throw in something for free or give big discounts on accessories. Paying cash also helps too, or at least check or debit because credit cards skim a little off their final profit.

Curado 70 my man or try the Casitas. I don't see how your curado 200 doesn't work though? >>

Well it's a Curado 300e and when I cast a weightless plastic, a spinner or small crank it just feels like I'm reeling in nothing. And if I hook into a bass I'm honestly just man handling it back to the shore lol.

I like the Curado 70; kind of expensive but I think I'll go for it. Any recommendation for line?

Oh shit, yeah a 300 is definitely a bit big for that. The 70 doesn't hold that much line but if you are using braid it shouldn't really matter since the only way they could spool you is if you let them. I'd recommend some power pro 538 20-30 pound braid or Power Pro 8 strand super slick in the same weight. If you want to through a finesse presentation get some 12 pound flouro, preferably seagar, and tie on 4-5 feet to the end of the braid for a leader.

Ok complete noob here. I bought a rod and reel this week but I have no idea if there's a proper way to set my rig up. After growing up in a fishing family on both sides and learning from my grandfathers, dad, mom, and uncle, pretty much this:

Fish need to see motion. They are wired to hunt. That being said just seeing a lure beeline through the water almost always looks fishy (huehue). I usually do short pulls away and then bring the rod to the lure and reel in the slack so the lure is pretty much jumping to and fro. Imagine looking at fish in an aquarium; they don't just swim constantly in a line; they bolt and stop. Anything else doesn't seem right

I just stopped at Gander. Anon who lives up here said this store wasn't going under, but they just started doing 10%-30% off everything. All of the stuff I grabbed rang up 20%-30% off and I didn't even know there would be a discount until I got to the register and saw the signs.

I have a feeling they will start advertising it this weekend or next week and the store will be wiped within a couple days. I really wish I had more money to burn because I would grab a couple rods or something if I'm gonna get 30% off.

The one up here is just like a normal Friday afternoon, kinda slow. No signs on the outside of the building or anything. I really want to go back in there and grab more shit but I think I should abstain.

Their website is even down now. Who knows what will happen, maybe they will reopen some stores under new ownership. No Academy or Cabela's down here so I'm stuck with Bass Pro, a shitty selection at Dick's, and some local places that are either like all saltwater or have a very limited selection of lures and mostly just sell bait and hooks.

I was asked a few threads ago to post some pictures when I got it in. It's the digital chip bait caster. Pretty good out of the box. Put a 3 oz weight on the reel and chucked it across the field. Didn't even have to touch the line, once the weight hit the ground it locked and prevented backlash. So my first thoughts are it's pretty neat, and has a nice casting sound. I'll take it to the lake tomorrow to play with it though.
>>
>>1008552
Some are slightly better than others, but Dick's is better than Walmart. Plus I already own pretty much every lure and bait that Walmart carries and I would use.

>>1008556
Kek. I hope they are quick about sending it again. Anon who bought that Blackout rod from them, shit took forever to get a new one that wasn't broken.

The reel I have has different setting for different types of lines (floracarbon, braided, etc.) out of the box it's pretty much ready to go. Easy to take apart as well, there's a dial on the side you use to unlocked it then flick a switch to open it. It's pretty damn light too, and recharges by casting and reeling. I'll have a more in depth analysis in the morning though. So far it seems to be worth the price.

That's the plan with mine. I was going to just order online, but it's a pain in the ass to know the sizes of stuff you have never used before. I always hang on to small boxes from Amazon and stuff for shit like this and then just taped a notecard on there as a shipping label lel.

I ordered online last time but Dick's I think was the only one who had free shipping and I didn't know exactly what to get from there. I'm glad I went to Gander tho because I got a decent haul for the limited budget.

I really hope that other anon comes thru. It all worked perfectly for Xmas and I don't want anybody to get screwed on this one. But if he does flake out somehow, he will have lots of pizzas coming to his door.

No I walk around fishing.
>>
>>1008673
I pretty much surf fish all the time so no

It's not too bad if you can find the structures and locate the fish. I'm sure it applies to freshwater as well. Just find good structure and try it out. You can't learn if you don't even throw a line into the water.

If you can't figure it out, just soak some smelly bait and catfishes will come to you.
>>
>>1008673

90% of the fish are going to be concentrated in about 1% of the available water.

Prey fish want to hide from predators and predators want to hide from prey so they can ambush them. Open water is really the last place any fish wants to be for a significant period of time.

So fish are going to be concentrated round shade, cover, and underwater terrain. Concentrate on anything sticking out of or over the water. Bushes, weed lines, docks, undercut shorelines, piles of rocks, tree stumps, half sunken shit.

Places where moving watee meets slow water, like creek or rivery mouths and especially spillways are good. Fish hang out in areas of lesser current and just wait for food to float past.

Honestly, the shore is a great place to fish. Lots of cover usually. Transition between shallow and deep water. Lots of concentrated baitfish, insects, and frogs to eat. Even when you have a boat, you'll likely catch most of your fish within a stones throw of the shore.
>>
>>1008686
I know That, it's just an uncomfortable feeling of looking like a shooby, where I had parked I did a thorough walk around and couldn't find a single spot I could cast effectively.

I'm ending up with 75$ of Cabela's gift card soon.
Atm I'm gonna be using some of my dad's reels.
Should I get pic related cleaned? Although dusty and nearly 20 yrs old it reels in smooth and the under the spool it has virtually no dirt there.

I'm guessing a tackleshop can clean it up for cheap. Then after get it spooled up too.

I'll hang onto the gift card for a while.
Maybe for waders or some other gear that I need inthe future. May I ask if Cabela's is doing good in business? The gander mountain thing makes me wonder.
>>

I really would only use it a handful times a year, so I don't want to spend too much. Looks like a solid reel though I might splurge for it.

>>1008690
The only way you're gonna learn is to get it out there and go for it. Some lakes are really hard to fish from shore. It's really the exact same thing as fishing a smaller body of water, just more spread out.

Just wanted to say thanks Reddington for the help with this.

I got the Shimano Curado 70XG from Bass Pro and paired it with a 6'6 medium fast action tourney rod. The thing worked like a dream. Very smooth casting and reeling. And I could finesse every single bait I tested on it. I was so excited that when I got home I took it fishing and ended up pissing 7 hours away in a Northern IL forest preserve...

Caught some dinky Pike, a flathead that said "fuck it" attacking my spinnerbait and a couple LMB sitting around.

Some bodies of water do have shitty shore access: Few parks. Most of the shoreline is heavily wooded or covered in uncut grass. Only 1 or 2 public piers.

This is by no means the majority of large bodies of water.

But yeah, a boat will Prettt much always give you better options. Even on bodies of water with good shore access, boats get around faster, let you better target fish along the shore without spooking them, let you pull fish out of cover easier, and have a whole host of advantages.

I was in my kayak and had my feet in the water. I was surprised to find bluegill were nibbling my toes. Hung my feet off piers all my life and never had that happen. Fish are just more chill around boats.

Cotton mouths have a super distinctive head (side profile wise, forget the "triangle/diamond" stuff) and swim more on top of the water. They're so buoyant that they really can't submerge fully.

Water snakes will swim with just the head out. Sometimes you can see the back. They won't by sitting on the water like a Cottonmouth.

Water snakes also go completely under the surface and climb tree branches over water, something Cottonmouths don't do.

99% of the snakes you'll encounter on the water are some harmless water snake.

I should have followed that one big snake I think was a cotton mouth. I know the stripped one was for sure a water snake because he was diving in the water and was actually sitting stationary submerged by the shore to not alert me of its position. I've seen both these snakes before and but I've always just considered them all to be water snakes.

Because he's not retarded
>>
>>1009027
It works but it really feels like it takes all the sport out when I have so much leverage over the fish I push pull it out.

I live in NE Ohio so I'm really not seeing much of anything above 5lbs, but I have had carp snap my older smaller rods, so this time I decided to get as big as I would ever need
>>
>>1009018

iktf, when I was new to fishing and had no idea what I was doing I bought this massive catapult of a fishing rod because I thought smaller was worse except for portability

I thought I was bad at tying palomars because the lure kept "coming off" but looking back I think I launched them halfway across the lake by snapping the light mono line I had on

>>1009035
Hey check your email faggot.
>>
>>1009045
Got it. I still haven't heard anything from that one anon, I hope that cunt buys something for his person.
>>
>>1009043
Dumb question, but what do you do to keep your line from snapping? I'm assuming you just check it every few casts for knicks but how far up the line do you check?
>>
>>1009074
If you just run the line thru your fingers on the retrieve, you can probably feel any big knicks or knots. Otherwise from time to time you want to cut off the first couple feet and retie the lure or hook because that is where it will get beat up. And mostly don't be like that cunt who leaves the same mono on the reel for 10 years. One year max for mono, even less if you fish a lot.

He's probably trolling anyway.

New bread coming...

Looking to get a new rod. How would a St. Croix Triumph 6' medium power with Abu Garcia Orra S spinning reel fare for bass/small pike? Planning on 15lb braid (wire leaders for pike of course).

Its from old conventional reels for trolling, you had your strong hand on the handle for reeling in big fish, and meme casters were just small conventional reels with level wind.

Nice

Checj your line every few fish, it will fray quickly. If it is, cut off about a foot of line, stuff it in your pocket, tie back on, and keep fishing. Abd remember, line and lures are consumables

DO NOT.

You can crack a rod doing this.

I cracked a 7'2" MH Vendetta throwing one of the smaller 3 pronged Alabama rigs.
