Last call for the Spring Santa! Gonna draw names soon, had one anon drop out because he's a poorfag and can't commit to the $25 budget. If you're in, email GetSomeMemes at Gmail and let me know.

Idk the pattern looks different. Like the blue in green sunfish is usually more like squiggles and this is spots like crappie. I'm sure it's some hybrid lol.
>>
>>1004947
Hybrids of sunfish are really common. Thats why i wouldnt bother figuring out what it is down to the DNA-sequences.

Unless you get something neat like a sunfish + bass hybrid

Just got back from the first outing on the new boat. It started off shittiy because it was raining and no one brought rain gear so we sat inside and played pool until it passed. Once we go out there it was nice. Boat ran excellent all day. I never realized how much of a pain in the ass it is to use a trolling motor though. We ended up with a handle full of small mouth, my budy caught his first ever pike. It's was a pretty nice one for there, around 32-35 inches we didn't measure. I also for the first time caught what I think is a big ass golden shiner but it might be a small carp because I've seen carp there before. Little freak destroyed my jerkbait. I'll post some pics later they are all on my buddy's phone

Why all this censorship????
>>
>>1004969
Wow. That's trippy. That is 100% a bluegill/crappie hybrid, right? I tried looking into that awhile ago and I don't even know if it's supposed to be possible biologically but it obviously happens. Look at the head and eyes, it's like somebody photoshopped a crappie and bluegill together.
>>
>>1004942
How do I into fishing? I literally live in the sportsman's paradise, and I used to fish with my aunt's husband and my grandmother every now and again as a kid in the Florida panhandle.

What's a good entry rod and reel?
>>
>>1004978
I'm actually fairly certain it's a sunfish man. Lake pleasant is known for monster fucking blue gills and green and hybrid sunfish.

The crappie are almost non existent there compared to Roosevelt or San carlos lakes. No standing wood and grass.

Sportsman's Warehouse fish picture wall in phoenix is loaded with blue gill and sun fish pictures of that size.

Bass boat brand that either went out of business or had a name change or something like that In the early 2000's.

Here's what I think was a golden shiner? First time in my life ever catching one
>>
>>1005015
Pretty sure that's a rudd not a golden shiner. Same group of fish as shiners and carp and shad though.

The males get knobbly nose pimples for breeding for some reason.
>>
>>1004981
PLS guys?

I want to do some small time bayou fishing once a month or so
>>
>>1005026
I may be thinking of the wrong fish. Googling rudd doesn't look like it. It's for sure not a shiner. Maybe a sucker or something of some kind or a roach?
>>
>>1005030
Brah, get a 100 dollar bait caster of any top name brand, an 80 dollar rod of any top brand, and 15 to 20 lb copolymer P-Line and have at it. Use the fisherman's improved clinch knot. Get some 6 inch keitech fat shad swim baits and rig them up and start fishing. Problem solved. Use either half ounce jig heads with size 3 hooks or a size 4 ewg weighted swim bait hooks.

Tie an arbor knot on your line to the spool though.

Here's a nice 2+ pound chunky small mouth
>>
>>1004997
>>1005000
Maybe, but those spots plus that shape of the head really look like it has some crappie DNA. I have seen some other pics like that too and people say the same thing but nobody ever seems to confirm it with science.
>>
>>1005043
No. If you're going to hit the salt water a lot get a 7 foot 6 or longer heavy rod fast action rod. If you mean to take small inshore medium heavy is fine.

If your super concerned get an inshore rated reel from a company. You should still rinse it off with fresh water after every outing.

Get some different sized swim baits and kastmaster spoons.

I got it on Craigslist from a guy who got it from his uncle who got it brand new. The guy I bought it from didnt fish that much and wanted to get a snowmobile so he sold me it for $5700. The post was for $6500 but I knew he'd take less. It's a 2001 javelin venom 18 with a 115hp jhonson two stroke engine. Trailer is original to the boat and so is the cover he gave me for it. The guy I got from is really good with mechanical shit and he kept this thing immaculate. Only thing it needs is a pull cord for the trolling motor because the one I put on was fucked. Other than that it's been perfect, keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way

Just tossed her I the steam pot.

Doused fish I. Soy sauce and premium fish sauce. Stuff with chopped ginger and black pepper and green onion. Slice lines to get flavor in the meat. Top with chopped ginger, garlic, red pear Korean chili sauce, salt, ground black and white peppercorn medley, and chopped green onions. Apply more spy and fish sauce to taste. Be gentle with the fish sauce you can ruin it.

Steam with chicken broth below.

Also add sesame seeds and orange peel top with dried chili and seaweed crushed up.

Bam.

Had to trim the tail to fit the bug bastard. Oil the pan too.

>>1004942
There are two lakes near me that have pike in them. How do I go about finding pike and targeting them instead of bass?
>>
>>1005106
That's what I thought after looking into it but most Redears are darker and the ones like anon caught almost look like they have a crappie face. Maybe it's just when they get lighter colors or get big, they look like some hybrid.

>>1005138
That's what got me too, not just the colors and pattern. Sunfish normally look really round like a salad plate when they get big and that one has a hump on the head and around the eyes that looks so close to be a hybrid of a crappie and sunfish. I don't think it's possible tho.

I mean it's warm, but I live near the ocean so there's always a breeze and it's like 85F in the summer or maybe a couple degrees more.

I actually have this AC unit in here but I don't like using it unless I really have to. Garage isn't insulated for shit so you gotta run the thing for hours to really get the temp down and then the first time I open the garage door, it's all gone. I guess if I'm really working on something and want cooler temps I will run it and point the vent towards me.

But I love the weather. It's nice to sleep in my 72F bedroom but when I wake up in the morning all cold, I make a cup of coffee and come relax in the 80F garage.

>>1005167

The other side is a golf course but they're manipulating the current by making a big-ass platform right on the water and it making their side have calm water while the public side is a lot more more faster now. Doesn't help that the construction sounds scared off all the fish. Fucking kikes.

Noob here, went fishing with my dad as a kid but haven't done any in a while. What's better, bait or lure?
>>
>>1005370
Depends, catfishing or bass fishing?
Freshwater or saltwater?
Night time or day time?

In general lures will be better just because they don't need to be refrigerated, don't go bad, can cover more water on slow days but live bait will almost always produce more fish if all you're going for is to have a good time.

Try catching some catfish or something if you wanna chill, probably one of the easiest things you could do. Tie up a carolina rig, get some chicken liver, and hit a lake.
>>
>>1004978

That's a Shellcracker. One of the larger panfish. It usually eats snails, crawfish, mussels and the like.
>>
>>1005370

I usually use live bait caught whereever I'm fishing. I also toss a lure every now and then. Either a plug, spoon, or gulp.

I mostly target catfish, bigger bass, and crappie in freshwater and speckled trout, drum, sheepshead, and shark in saltwater.

For me, it's all about the fight at the end of the line. I'd rather catch 1 bigger fish than a dozen undersized ones.

You guys struggle with minority's I struggle with pretentious rich fags who through a fit and cry like little kids when someone fishes on the same river 300 feet down stream. Yesterday me and my buddy are trolling up river to get to a point and then we were gunna drift back down hitting the banks and when we got to the point where we were gunna stop 4 faggots wading up river for what I assume was for steelhead started walking towards us and using binoculars to see what we are doing. After we didn't back off they came over and started yelling at us for nothing. We were in too deep of water for them to get us in waders so we just yelled dumb shit back at them and they called someone left. Second time I've had to deal with those fucking faggots. I'm not even fishing for the same species and they still cry
>>
>>1005515
how would blacks fish then? seeing one on the water is almost as rare as a unicorn sighting.

every year when the walleye run up the detroit river to spawn, theres 5000 boats in the river fishing for walleye and niggers lining the shore/piers.

to be fair though, i think they're fishing for suckers as they just have a line casted out into the water sitting there
>>
>>1005538
I'm gonna have to agree with this. The white guys wearing Hukā„¢ fishing camo and 1k Van Staalā„¢/G Loomisā„¢ combos are the most obnoxious people on the pier.

>soaking a dead sardine for snook
>douchebag live lines a greenie literally within inches of my sardine
>the greenie swims around and gets tangled with my line
>guys starts screaming at me and says "it's common fucking sense" to not fish near people live lining
>tell him I was there first and you casted over me
>calls me a faggot and moves to the other side of the pier
>>
>>1005370
Dead bait is more boring and is 50/50 even with productivity with lure depend on species. Species that lures are better on are usually aggressive predators that hit hard and fight well though.

Live bait is almost always more productive than lure and always more productive than dead bait. However, live bait is a hassle to acquire and maintain, especially salt water live bait that can't be kept alive for long term easily.
>>
>>1005566
Really depends on the fish though. For example, sometimes snook get really lazy and they don't want to chase a live greenie but the second you kill it and drop it in the same exact spot they'll smash it.
>>
>>1005610
I feel like if you just catch a live bait and then put it on a hook, they gonna get lethargic real fast anyway and tempt those lazy fishes either way. Maybe that's the case for bait fishes in my area at least. Guess they are more fragile.

All my experiences pier fishing the Texas coast have been awesome. My first time out when all I had was youtube as a guide, some young Mexican guys gave me tips, tackle, and even shared their beer. We fished all night long.

I also learned to shark fish from some old guys who barely spoke english. Their kid translated between us.

Most of the time I encounter old black/white/Mexican guys who are all chill. We share stories and tips. Asian folks tend to stay quiet but I never have any issues

And Ive never seen a fight.

inland trout opener in WI coming up, usually fish a big stream up north for lunker brownies, but the water is too damn high. Gonna hit some trout lakes that are close together for 'bows and brookies. Slip bobbers and half a crawler should do the trick. Really like live bait for walleyes and cats on the Wisconsin River, but if they're snappin will switch to lures for some size. Remember small bait will usually catch small fish.

Spots on a river mean a lot. Depth is the key thing.
A good thing to look out for are dams/waterfalls. Fish end up at that point and often chill out around them.
Also depends how big this river is. Something like 40 yards wide or something like a river before it empties into a bay?

Rig a crawler, leech, or minnow along the bottom with a slip sinker rig. An easy one to make is too take a 1/2 oz bell or lindy sinker, string it on your line, then tie a #6 or #8 aberdeen hook on. Then attach a split shot about a foot from the hook to catch the big sinker. Cast and set the pole on a forked stick and reel in so it's just tight. When you get a strike your tip will bounce back and forth. Push your rod tip towards the strike then set hook. You'll catch whatever is in that river with some practice. Move around and try different spots, and eventually try different rigs, baits, line weights, rods, etch. Good luck

this is my problem. I have family in florida so i fish out on the ocean once a year or so for a few days. a 12" ladyfish will fight harder than any bass i've ever caught. a 24" grouper will fight harder than pretty much anything freshwater.

I have a hard time getting excited for fishing anything other than salmon/steelhead or lake trout if jigging with light rods anymore. the only reason i go fish panfish and walleye anymore is because theyre great eating.
>>
>>1006240

Same here. I hooked my first really nice sized blue catfish about 10 years ago and now I almost exclusively target catfish.

I catch bluegill to use as catfish bait and crappie for eating. I often hook big bass while fishing live bluegill for catfish and smaller ones when targeting crappie but I always throw them back.

Then I went saltwater fishing and holy-shit. The other year it dawned on me that the coast is only 2-3 hours away. I can drive down, pitch a tent, fish all night, and drive back.

And saltwater fish taste better than freshwater too.

And that's what I've been doing about once or twice a month for the past couple years.

Meh most saltwater fish fight kind of boring*. Sure they pull more drag, but if they just pull drag straight away from you it gets old.

That's why I'd rather catch specks than reds, but I wouldn't complain about either. I personally would rather catch a fish that shakes it's head and jumps than something that just heads the bottom and pulls drag.

That being said I really enjoy fishing saltwater and wished I lived closer to the coast. I absolitely love the ocean and get awestruck every time I see it, but I don't think I would ever give up the green fish.

>>
>>1006356
I guess I should've been more specific and said fish generally taken on tackle comparable to bass fishing, but I definitely won't deny there are more species of of fish that put on a show in saltwater. My main point was it doesn't matter if I'm catching bass or specks to me. I'll have a lot of fun either way, and that I'd rather catch a bass than a big saltwater fish that just pulls drag.

The exception are reds. They remind me a lot of how carp fight, but catching tailing reds is hella fun.

>ladyfish
Are those the ones that are always jumping out of the water? Can you catch those on artificials? I didn't have any luck with a shrimp plastic or little swimbait and I saw a whole bunch of them last time I was down.

>Are those the ones that are always jumping out of the water? Can you catch those on artificials? I didn't have any luck with a shrimp plastic or little swimbait and I saw a whole bunch of them last time I was down.

They're basically mini tarpon. I catch them with shrimp, mullet, and gulp under a popping cork. Mostly by accident when targeting reds and specks.

I feel ya. Sometimes I do get the urge to hook into something that just peels drag for awhile.

If there's one thing the ocean has freshwater beat by a huge margin it's this. I think that's my main appeal to the ocean honestly. There's so much shit out there.

Many people here call them poor man's tarpon. They're super fun on light tackle but will throw the hook if you don't get a solid good hookset. I loose a lot of them when using hard lures with trebles, I've found DOA CAL's on a jig head with a 2/0 or 3/0 hook to work great.

>bow sling method

Spear fishing?
>>
>>1006451

Most states only allow you to take game fish via hook and line. Shooting a bass or catfish with a bow would be illegal, for instance.

Instead, most bow anglers target non-game fish, particularly carp and gar. They're slower, can often be seen in shallow water or near the surface, and are a bit more difficult to take by hook/line unless you're using more specialized tackle/techniques.

>>1006455
>>Spear fishing?

Similar, only it fires arrows through the air instead of spears through the water. I imagine he wants it for the compactness.
>>
>>1006458
Ah OK I see. It would be for compactness, and rule of cool to be honest. I might just invest in a solid pocket fisher in that case, just to get my feet wet (no pun intended).

Or brush up on my local non game fish, thanks
>>
>>1006462

Pocketfisherman suck. If you want compact/minimalist, just get some line, a hook, and a stick thick enough to wrap the line around so it doesn't slice your hand open.

They also make collapsible poles, but those are pretty crappy and always find a way to mess themselves up too.

Or just get an ultralight rig. Really small, light and easy to transport.

I havent been skunked in a while... normally its something im used to but now that was strange. Ill be needing a new reel, let me explain what's going on with my current one.
So first of all the bail spring is broken, no problem to me anymore since im ok with manually flipping the bail.
But now the line gets stuck in between the rims of what im pointing at in the picture (not the same reel)
I dont know what causes it but I know that it makes the line all bent up if you reel through it.

A friend recommends a Daiwa BG reel.

Can I catch sneks on braid, or do I need some sort of teeth-proof leader?
>>
>>1006544
Depends what you catch them on. Their teeth aren't as bad as gar or anything, especially smaller ones. Plus I'm always catching them on inline spinners so the line isn't even near their teeth really. If in doubt, just use a flouro leader.

Carps have a quick burst of energy, but once that quick burst is gone it's just pulling in dead weight.
Reds fight till you get them in the net, they constantly have a lot of head shake trying to throw the hook, I've had and saw them jumping out of the water before, and it's a lot harder to catch one than putting out some corn, etc.

Damn that's cool. I think I've read they're on the Texas coast, but very sparse.

We don't really have a whole lot of fishes to catch, so I'm definitely biased. Almost everybody I've talked to pretty much targets reds, specks, or sharks, so when I think Texas saltwater that's what I think of.

Talking about saltwater in general though I won't argue there's more fish than not that put on amazing shows.

>>1006638
>Carps have a quick burst of energy, but once that quick burst is gone it's just pulling in dead weight. Reds fight till you get them in the net

So they fight a lot harder... Like I said

>they constantly have a lot of head shake trying to throw the hook

I've never felt any head shakes, at least not any like a bass or trout.

>I've had and saw them jumping out of the water before

I don't doubt that this is possible, but I've had carp come out of the water.

>and it's a lot harder to catch one than putting out some corn, etc.

Not really related to the fight.

I never said reds fight the same as carp, but the way they fight is similar imo. In fact the first thing I thought when I hooked into for the first time was something along the lines of "this is a lot like fighting a carp on an UL"

That is the biggest red I've caught though so the bigger ones very well could shake their heads more.

>>
>>1006660
Sahara go on sale for 50$. Get one then.
>>
>>1006677
The Sahara has a true sealed drag and better drag disks and gears. No plastic worm gear or cheap bearings.

Minimum anyone should spend on a reel is 70 bucks in my opinion. At 70 to 100 dollars you get into stuff that will last for years of twice a month hard fishing unless you get a lemon and dunk your shit in salt water and never clean or service it.
>>
>>1006681
This is the same reason why you should buy a pflueger president XT model over the regular president. It's 80 bucks instead of 50 and has a sealed drag and carbon fiber handle plus better cosmetic colors.
>>
>>1006681
Theres nothing wrong with cheap reals and $70 for a spinning reel is definitely on the high end of reels. The majority of reels in the 30-40 dollar range are perfectly fine and will last years if you take care of them.

No dude, 300 and up is high end. True high end gets near 1000 dollars like the shimano stella and such.

70 bucks gets you middle of the road reels that actually fucking work and don't have to be replaced every 6 months from light fishing.

Please go grab a an Abu Garcia sliver max and then a Shimano metanium at the store and tell me there is no objective difference. Or grab an Abu revo rocket spinning reel and compare it to a sienna. Or a Stella to either of those.

If you really think they don't cost more for a reason all you probably do is float baby night crawlers under a red and white bobber with a zebco button reel and talk about smoking blunts with your nigger friends and then go home and deep fry the one 2 lb channel catfish you caught with the skin still on.

>>
>>1006730
70 is like mid for spinning reels and lower mid for memecasters. I guess only thing with spinning reels is that they almost all have essentially the same design so a more expensive spinning reel won't cast any farther like a better memecaster but it will probably be lighter and have smoother drag.

70 is high range for spinning, ahead of that is very high and "you're retarded or sponsored".

Theres really not much difference like you said, mid range spinning reels cast as well and last almost as long (maybe longer due to heavier parts) as more expensive reels.

Fairly new angler here. Will using a swivel effect my results? I always used one growing up fishing with family so that we didn't have to tie a new knot every time we wanted to switch lures. >>
Pepsi pick the fuckin names already brah
>>
>>1006869

It does affect the way the lure acts in the water. By how much depends on the lure. It's basically luke adding extra weight to the end of the line, right before the hook.

I don't do a whole lot of lure fishing, but I usually have a couple feet of mono or flouro line tied to my braided main line so I can easily bite off and retie tackle, and that includes the occasional lure.

no, dont yank on it. If you pull gently and the knot doesn't release you need to pick at it until you can pull it apart. Depending on how much line you'll lose you can tie the 2 pieces together or respool it to where the knot will be at the bottom of your spool.

Do you fish 80 to 120 days a year? No. Exactly.

Do fish scream drag on you? No. Exactly.

Do you surf fish wading in water? No exactly.

I'm tired of all these retards touting their 50 dollar Shakespeare setup that lasts years and years. They are out right lies.

Even 700 dollar Van Stall spinning reels need to be rebuilt occasionally.

This is worse than people shilling China special kast king trash. That stuff is okay for people who charter retards that don't know how to fish and drop and knock rods around or step on them.

If you really love the sport and fish hard and enjoy a smooth responsive drag there is no reason to not drop 200 to 500 per rod and reel. This is the only life long hobby I have had so it matters to me.

I don't make fun or talk shit to people who buy a 20 thousand dollar sport bike and say "brah my Honda rebel scooter was 1500 bucks and it's lasted years man it does the same thing". I don't own a scooter but you get the point. You can spend 100 bucks on a heavy backpack and still backpack or you can build an ultralight kit and not destroy your knees but you have to spend 1200 fucking dollars. Guess what retard. The ultralight guy is going to have more fun and be more comfortable the same way the guy with a nice dobyns rod and Shimano reel will compared to your 90 pound ugly stick and zebco reel.

All of you poor fags need to shut the fuck up. Even if you make minimum wage you can save up and stop buying weed and booze a few times a month and treat yourself to a nice 100 dollar reel and 100 dollar rod once a year. Jesus.

Not him $200 is not that big of a deal if it's the total amount. It's bad to spend that much right away before catching any fishes at all, but after you fish for a while, it's easily add up to that much.

Rod and reel is not everything. lures, lines, terminal tackle, baits, fishing license can easily add up to that. Replacing those stuffs due to loss or malfunction stuffs add up as well. I have 2 set up that I bought from craiglist. Each probably cost around $60 - 80. I have various of lures but 2 of them of them have particular expensive price of $18 but they work too well to pass. Of course different lines and different type of terminal tackle add up quickly as well. I try not to spend too much but a lot of times I cheap out I end up with really shit stuffs I don't use or shit that need replacement too frequently and add up anyway.

You can limit yourself and fish specific way to make the cost lowest possible, but then it's not as enjoyable or not as productive.

Does anybody here know how to fish in murky water?

I'm stationed in Louisiana, and every body of water here is stained shit brown to the point where you can't see 6 inches below the surface. The only way I've caught fish is to use smelly bait, which only helps me catch catfish, and sometimes bluegill. But bass, crappie, gar, stripers I don't even know how to tackle it, since most lures are meant to be seen from a distance.

Calm down, the comments were in response to a novice who didn't need to drop $200 if he wanted to fish. Like all hobby industries, the tackle industry relies on getting anglers to buy more shit then they don't need.

No but if you told someone a fucking scooter is going to the same thing a dirt bike will I would call you a retard the same way these guys are saying a button zebco reel or 15 dollar spinning reel with soft plastic gears and no sealed drag is going to last year's are retarded.

It's outrageous.

Someone just getting onto fishing is going to be way happier in 6 months to a year with a 200 dollar rig than a 50 dollar one. Everyone who takes it remotely seriously upgrades in a year after spending 50 to 100 bucks on trash reels and rods that end up with problems. Replace your drag washers? 10 bucks gone. Line snag and get cut because of a frozen drag? 10 bucks gone again for more line. All the cheap shit adds up because it needs to be fixed and replaced over time. A decent setup is much more bullet and accident proof.

If you really want to waste your time ducking around with rods and reels that are marketed to dumb baby boomers and guys with 3 kids from 3 different women fine. Enjoy your cheap rod and reel. Don't cry when you can't cast far because your abu silvermax or cheap cabelas brand reel froze up or grinds.

>50 dollar reel perform well for most needs

Not when the unsealed drag dries up and gets dust in sitting in the garage and someone cries like a bitch when it locks up breaks a big fish off.

You're objectively wrong. At the bare minimum a spinning reel needs a sealed drag to even approach reliability. Unless your assuming this person is going to regularly take their spinning reel apart and regrease and pack drags.

You twats like this practice weld I did?

Normally work doesn't want you to do vertical weaves like this but I had to practice it for school.

The black stuff is the slag that you chip off after the weld cools. It's burns off the rod and covers the weld to protect it as its cooling. Falls off very easily actually. Just lightly tap it with a welding hammer and it all falls of and explodes into pieces on the ground.

$200 for a spinning reel is a little excessive unless you're dunking it in the surf or its some fuck hueg reel. The $100-$125 spinning reels are really nice.

$300 isn't bad for a casting reel though.

Not everyone pointing out good deals or reliable stuff that doesn't cost hundreds/thousands of dollars for newbies is insulting some guy whose life revolves around the hobby and who spends all their disposable income on it.

And for the record, I fish at least 60+ days a year, regularly target large catfish, carp, and saltwater fish (which scream drag), and do wade and kayak fishing in salt water.

There are plenty of reasons someone doesn't have to drop that much money on the hobby. I personally increase/decrease my spending as my fishing needs/options change.

But I don't think it's particularly helpful to folks like >>1007054 when they come away with the perception that all successful fisherman need to spend 200 bucks to get into the hobby or else they're screwed.
>>
>>1007223
I mostly agree with what you're saying but it's retarded to call cheap reels reliable. A couple red fish with some size are going to destroy sub 100 dollar reels if they rip locked drag and the reel has been dunked and lost lubricant.
>>
>>1007195
>Not when the unsealed drag dries up and gets dust in sitting in the garage and someone cries like a bitch when it locks up breaks a big fish off.

That's a matter of basic maintenance. I mean sure it makes more sense to pay hundreds of dollars if never taking care of your gear is worth that much to someone.
>>
>>1007225
No. You get a sealed drag at the 70 to 100 dollar price point you idiot. You still have to oil and clean a reel occasionally but if you dunk a reel with a sealed drag it's not immediately fucked when the water dries and grits up the drag.

If you're honestly saying there is no need for a sealed drag you better call Shimano and Daiwa and let them know they got it all wrong. All customers have to do is regularly take apart their reel and rebuild their drag. Simple as that!

I would have agreed with you had not I tried that cheap ass shimano reel and found it to perform well beyond what its price point would suggest.

Of course it's not some $500 dollar reel, but it's most certainly not a piece of crap and has handled several red fish, bluefish, flatheads, and a 40+ inch black drum.

Better call van staal and let them know they have been doing it wrong all along. All you need to do is take your entire reel apart and meticulously clean it if you want to surf fish and get your reel salty.

Tell them the benefits of how an unsealed drag reel that open to the elements the perfect spinning reel for such things.
>>
>>1007224
Who in this thread even made those claims?
>>
>>1007229
Meh. It's going to lock up on you one day and when it does its gonna be gay.

I still say there is no reason to spend less than 70 bucks on a reel. The lack of head aches and problems that disappear at that price point and up make it worth it. If you can only spend 30 bucks on a reel good luck having enough money to regularly fish and enjoy it.

The anti reverse on cheap reels ALWAYS fucking break. It's enraging. The bails on spinning reels break too.

Is this a meme? The only reels I've ever experienced a locked drag on are zebco 33s and all of my reels are in the 30-80 dollar price range. I spray some wd-40 into the reels occasionally but they're all several years old and have caught dozens of bull reds, large rays, and hundreds of other fish. Me thinks locked drags are not nearly as large of a problem as you think.

Sealed drags are available from every company under 100. Even pflueger offers the president xt with one.

I will admit you won't find a sealed bearing reel.

>>1007240
I have several calcuttas and several high end abu reels, but alright.

Not everyone is a consumerist whore who always has to have the best like you are :^)
>>
>>1007234
>Meh. It's going to lock up on you one day and when it does its gonna be gay.

Yeah it will. But as I mentioned before, I will have gotten a decade of good service out of it.

Will a reel costing several times as much last even longer? Yeah. Will it perform better? Yeah. Will I get a more expensive reel? Most definitely, considering I'm into kayak fishing now and my friend has experience doing redfish tournaments and wants me to join him. I want every advantage I can get. I'll be upgrading my kayak, and my fish finder, livewell, and other gear as well.

And there will always be better gear that costs even more. It's all about getting what suits your needs, and a lot of stuff performs admirably for its price.

To say that one of the reels I'm have is a piece of crap that won't last 6 months and break the instance I hook up with a big fish or go saltwater fishing and because of that, I *need* to spend at least 70 bucks to avoid that fate/enjoy successful fishing is an outright lie.

If someone is just getting into fishing for the first time and looking at a reel, I would recommend the Shimano IX series in a heartbeat over reels costing several times as much.

Oh shit... new bread baking!

>he mysteriously now has "Calcuttas and high end Abu reelz".

Sure bud. Sure you do.

Next you will tell me you have a center console Flatts boat and an 80k bass cat boat.

The irony of you calling me a consumerist as though it's a bad thing to own nice stuff and then claiming you own 800 dollars in reels or so is hilarious.

Just fuck off already. Most people would rather be using their money towards something else. Unless you have a maxed IRA, 401k, no debt, and money in the bank for a rainy day stop calling those who disagree with poorfag.
>>
>>1007247

It's not bad to spend money on stuff you love doing.

It is bad to universally declare all stuff under an arbitrary price point to be bad and imply that anyone who doesn't spend at least as much as you is shitty/poor.

They prioritize according to their needs.

Lots of people spend more on their non-fishing related stuff than you do, and have higher quality non-fishing stuff than you do. It doesn't mean all your non-fishing stuff sucks.

I'm going to start fishing for the first time in years and I bought this rod, but I found out it only supports 2-6lbs. Did I fuck up?
>>
>>1007329
Yes, that is a horrible rod even for its intended purpose. Read the sticky and find a med weight rod in your price range.
>>
>>1007329

Telescoping rods tend to suck. Most rods are made of 1 or 2 pieces, but your telescoping rod has 8 pieces, and all those eyes have an annoying tendency to twist around on each other or collapse when fully extended- when they don't get stuck. The action also tends to be horrible.

I've collected several telescoping rods from garage sales, friends, family members, and they're all horrible.

Also, what kind of fish would you like to catch? Where will you be fishing?
>>
>>1007336
Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City.

I didn't really think about what I would catch but wikipedia says they have "largemouth & smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, bluegill, black crappie, as well as white bass and hybrid striped bass".

I have some red wiggler worms I have been raising that I will use as bait.

I think it's too late to cancel the order, so I will just use that thing as a second rod to catch smaller fish while I reel the big ones with a better researched pole.

With worms, you're pretty much going to just catch bluegill. All those other guys prefer minnows and shad as food.

Start with a medium action rod, a size 2500+ reel, and some 10+ lbs braided line. Learn the palomar knot and use some size 2-1/0 hooks. Buy some minnows or catch some bluegill and hook them through the nostrils and fish them suspended under a cork. Or fish them off the bottom with a fish finder rig.
