Can someone identify this giant mushroom for me? Is this safe to chow down on? Thanks.
>>
His name is James. He likes walks on the beach and calls his mother about 4 times a week
>>
There was a poster on /an/ earlier this week who put up 3 threads in one day.
Thread 1:
>Image of mushroom
>Asks if it's a magic mushroom
>No serious responses

Thread 2:
>Posted about an hour later
>Image of different mushroom
>Says he's cleaned them off and eaten some
>Wants to know when he'll start feeling the effects
>An anon informs him that both mushrooms he's posted are toxic
>Perhaps OP should contact poison control?
>OP freaks out, saying he can't go to the hospital because he's just smoked a ton of weed
>Anons chime in asking if OP is dead yet

Thread 3:
>6 hours later
>OP posts selfie from hospital bed with an IV in his arm
>Says hospital confirmed toxic mushrooms, but he didn't eat enough to die
>Relentless mockery and screencaps from all anons who reply

Don't be that anon. Thanks.
>>
any Minneapolis area sc/out/s have any advice for a newbie Morel hunter on the Twin Cities east side (just over the WI border)
>>
>>1003881
If you want serious responses, you're going to have to describe your basic geographic area. Also providing a spore print could help
>>
Statistically it is safe, but very few mushroons are palatable.
>>
>>1003881
I want to post something snarky, but honestly OP you should eat it. You'll probably die in horrible agony, but for the rest of us it is a good thing.
>>
>>1003881
Go to your bookstore or online and get a mushroom field guide for your region.

Also you need strong descriptions of its cap shape, gill shape, stipe, spore print, etc.

Also that specimen looks old as fuck. Enjoy your bugs and shit flavor, even if it is an edible variety.

Whitewater
>>
It appears to be of the division Ascomycota and the family Pezizacae, but that doesn't mean shit in terms of if you can eat it or not.
>>

That was a fun time.

I'm a mycologist and the people that only see fungi in the context of food drive me crazy. I know it's often the gateway to learning about fungi, but some people take it to the extreme.

I've led forays and shown people beautiful ascomycetes and start telling people their ecology, biology, etc. and all they ask is, "is it edible". Does a 2 mm diameter cup fungus seem like it would make a good meal?

Or people coming to me with a mushroom/polypore and I start talking about it's ecology and they interrupt with, "is it edible?". I say no or it's not palatable and they toss it over their shoulder and don't care.
>>
>>1004945
you're just worried that other people will learn to forage and you won't be able to handle the competition
>>
>>1004945
I would unironically fuck a mycologist
>>
>>1004394
that's... vague.
>>
>>1003881
Mushrooms are very complicated. I use a 350 page book for my localized mushrooms.
>>
unrelated but I grew some cubes a couple year ago in my closet. I sold some to a buddy and he no shit asked me "You grew these? So where did u buy your spuds from?"

He obviously meant spores but still gave me a good kek
>>
>>1004945
Well, food is the only, or at least the primary, context by which many, many people interact with mushrooms. It's easier for them to contemplate, say, a juniper bush in terms of aesthetics, because they're used to seeing juniper in the context of topiary, or other decorations. You have to be patient while people make new associations in their brains for mushrooms.

Not the same anon but you got it wrong, cup fungi don't have gills on the bottom and the inside of the cup is usually smooth and matte. This one seems too big to be one as well.

Avoid yellow shrooms

That's yellow

Might not be fatal, but it'll make you sick

my guess, it's a false chanterelle. havent heard anything about them being poisonous, but apparently they are not really edible.
found this guy a few years ago.

Sarcoscypha austriaca... or maybe S. coccinea, microscopically they are easily distinguished.

They are among the first discomycetes found in spring. They often overwinter and mature when the snow melts, so it seems they just appeared recently. They are a welcome sight every spring, very beautiful.
>>
>>1003881
nigga just go to whole foods
>>
>>1009251
How did you prepare them?

I'm not a huge mushroom fan, but when I've wanted to eat morels I just dredge them in flour with some salt and pepper and fry in butter. Someone I know stuffs them with a mixture of cream cheese, chives, and canned salmon and cooks them like that. Never tried it, but sounds good.

>>
Black Morale's man. Fucking can't get enough of those. I recently found out some states will buy them off you at around 90$ a pound. My hunting partner and I just eat them.

Sour cream + heavy cream/whipping cream in a sauce pan, add salt pepper, butter, beef broth, garlic, onions and a ton of dill, heat on low until bubbling/cooking, add in diced/washed Morales. serve over steak and rice. fucking godly.
>>

So when should I start looking? And whennshould I harvest?
>>

>not sure if other anon made it clear but yes, you can eat them
There really isn't a consensus on their edibility so I wouldn't recommend it. It would be pointless to eat them anyway, they offer virtually no flavor or known benefits and couldn't possibly fill you up. They are visually stunning, best to enjoy them with your eyes.
>>
>>1008115
Scarlet elf cups... edible, bit of a bland taste but edible nonetheless.
>>
Is it possible to find mushrooms with psilocybin this time of the year in the UK? Or would you have to wait until Autumn when they have rotting plants to grow on?

If you want reliable psilocybin, cultivate. Erowid and Shroomery are good sources.

>>
>>1009403

IMHO the less you do to them, the better. Obviously, fried is good because frying makes anything taste good. I like to eat them raw, or quickly brown them in butter. The most I'd do would be to mix them with ramps and asparagus, some oil, and broil or grill until crispy.

I'm sure they'd be good with cream cheese, chives, and salmon, but you'd be wasting the delicate flavor, IMHO.

>Advice is to completely avoid all yellow mushrooms

Why say this? You are blatantly wrong some of the best edibles are yellow (Chanterelles, Yellow Morels, Chicken of the woods, Golden oysters)
>>
>>1003881
Word of advice people if you want an accurate ID. Include your REGION, the HABITAT you found it in, and include MULTIPLE SPECIMENS to account for variability within a species.
>>
>>1013782
Not a jack o' lantern as it its fruiting out of the soil, not from wood.
>>
>>1004945
Where did you study? What do you do for a living? I only ask because I do not believe you. Know a lot about mushrooms does not make you a mycologist.
>>
>>1006542
Not him, but any decent 30× jeweler's loupe would do it. You don't need to get too fancy..
>>
I'm finding ungodly amounts of Destroying Angels in my local wildlife refuge this year

what the fuck
>>
>>1016339
I am a post doc right now. I'm not telling you anything about myself because it is a small field and would be very easy to identify me with a bit of info. There is also a lot more to mycology than mushrooms.

>>1016355
A loupe is key in the field but a microscope is needed to identify many discomycetes, mushrooms, molds, etc. I don't have a field microscope though, I just brings things back to the lab.

These things sprouted up under my rain barrel recently. I think they're Hen of the Woods but I'm not completely sure. I'm waiting on one for a spore print right now.

Hen of the woods or nay?
>>
>>1019354

It's a chanterelle most likely. Pretty delicious.

Chanterelle look-a-likes are easily distinguished by not having their gills running down the stipe like a true chanterelle.

Close-up. Pores are so small they're not visible by the naked eye. Doesn't bruise or ooze. Older sections are hard and woody.

I'm pretty sure it's hen of the woods, it's just growing weirdly compared to ones I've seen before.

doesn't look like it. chicken of the woods is bright orange and yellow. those also look way too small.
might be some random polypore, not deadly or anything but not tasty either.
