#149-"One Million" Edition

Previous Thread:
>>997083

I wanted to do the Spring™ edition of the F&T Secret Santa, possibly making it an Easter basket but forgot all about it. Still tried to come up with an excuse to do it for the new season but so far Zuriss and one anon are the only people who showed interest so I'm not sure it will happen. I guess people just don't have the same holiday spirit of giving in April.

In other news I bought myself my first ultra light combo today. Trying out this Gander Mtn. 'Angler' series panfish/trout rod. Paired it with Shimano's® New Nasci 1000 spinning reel. Should be able to fling those tiny chatter memes a good distance further now. I'll probably go try it out tomorrow after class

Only had one other bite and I wasn't paying attention so I didn't set the hook in time. I was casting to some trees and then reeling back the lure and the fish hit it probably 10' from shore and spit it out before I could do anything.

Man, it's so fucking annoying. Like she isn't lookin for other people still (which was what I feared earlier on) but she doesn't want to get hurt or some shit about dude she was married to. Like she really testing me and wants to make sure she knows me and not just the first date me trying to impress a girl before she commits to something. It this was any other girl, I would dip out but I think she is different than the average one. The other day I was telling her that this shit all makes me nervous and she was just like "No I really just want to take it slow because when you try and rush something it never lasts".

So I could start talking to this new girl a little bit more and I guess I could keep it quiet so if I gotta dump the one off I got something new to try or at least get some pussy from younger black girl while waiting for Latina but she would kill me if she found out about it. Or I could tell old girl that new girl is interested so she gotta make up her mind but I have a feeling like a 20% chance that gets her moving a little more and 80% chance it pisses her off.

Wtf man, I haven't found a cute girl who liked me in fucking forever now I have two of em all of a sudden. But I'm really starting to like the first girl so I need to get her to make up her mind.

It's literally the greatest thing on earth if you fish soft plastics. It has saved me many spooltek tails and senkos. It melts the plastic back together in seconds.

It'd be 20lb Power Pro.
>>
>>1000537
Bretty gud. That's about the perfect setup, especially if the M rod isn't super fast. 15lb or 10lb braid would of course cast farther but you will get some distance with 1/4oz on 20lb.

Did ok yesterday. Recent cold front really slowed them down. Could only reliably catch them on a Rapala X-rap. Got three more on a wacky rigged senko. Those are the only two baits they would hit.
>>
>>1000530
Majority of the strikes will occur on the fall down. Lift it up, let it sink. When you go to lift it back up you will feel the fish swimming away with it.

Also as a side note you should really get some o-rings for wacky rigging. They increase action and save your worms from getting torn up as fast

idk where you're from, but are lake trout considered safe to eat where you live? Michigan DNR guidelines say to eat like 2 fish per year. I eat about 10x the recommended every year. Great lakes, slow growing fish, mercury etc etc...

is that a problem in other states?

>>1000515
It's called a conventional reel, and it's worth learning to use
>>
>>1000532
I've thrown those on a 6'6" medium with 10 or 12 mono and got alright distance maybe 50-75 feet
>>
>>1000537
That'll cast really nicely
>>
What pound test powerpro should I get? Usually I get 8-10 pound mono. Would 20 pound powerpro be comparable?
>>
>>1000322
Short pants.
>>
>>1000615
If it's for a spinning reel spend the extra money and get the Super 8 Slick or Suffix 832. The softer braids cast a whole lot better.
>>
>>1000621
Oy... I thought I was splurging by spending $12 on line
>>
Would an 8 pound braid be as strong as a 15 pound mono/fluoro? Or do I need a new reel?
>>
>>1000624
Wut?

>>1000615
I would say 20lb feels around 8lb, and 15lb feels like you're casting 6lb. So if you're running 8lb mono, you could swap to 15lb braid and get twice the strength with much better casting distance.

looks like a old penn 155 surf or maybe a 140 squidder. pull the side plates off and grease it well, pull the old line off of it and clean the spool, twist off the left side bearing and clean and grease, pull the handle off and grease the bushing assembly then get some brasso and shine it up.

>>1000530
you must like replacing worms a lot if you fish that way. go to home depot and buy some o rings or raid your sisters rubber band bracelet collection and put those worms on better. youll get more action from the worm

>>1000532
50' with 6lb mono

>>1000534
>mend it
>3:16 swimbait glue

I like fixing baits and modifying them but I use clear pvc glue, like the kind for pvc pipes its what those products are made from, much cheaper and way stronger.
>>
>>1000625
Please explain to me how braided line works
>>
>>1000630
>>1000534
Jesus. I mean even with a whole day of fishing, you might go through one $4 bag of worms.
>>
>>1000622
I'd go down to 15#, but that's just my preference.

If you're dead set on 20# it's not like it's a *huge* difference or anything. It really only makes a big difference once you get to 1/16oz or under in my experience.

I would say your rod is more important for distance when comparing regular braid to "super" braids.

And as you use it more it'll soften up quite a bit.

Tl;dr get what you want it'll be okay

>>1000632
8lb braid would be as strong as 8lb mono/flouro just thinner a lot thinner. Why would you need a new reel?
>>
>>1000632
Braid had a thinner diameter and weighs less for a given strength compared to mono or flouro. That means with a given 1/4oz lure on 10lb braid or 10lb mono, the one on the braid is dragging much less weight behind it and will cast further.

But while 20lb braid is about the same diameter as 6lb mono, the braid isn't as smooth so you get more friction while casting. All in all, 20lb braid feels a lot like casting 8lb-10lb mono. 10lb braid will give you casting distances like you would get with 4lb-6lb mono.
>>
>>1000630
Mend it isn't glue, it melts the plastic back together. I'm sure that pvc glue makes the glued area really hard. With this you can't even tell it was glued.

>>1000635
I use it on keitechs, spoolteks and other more expensive plastics. If you're throwing yum dingers there's no point in using it.
>>
>>1000534
you don't have to repair them if they get lost in the river
>>
>>1000662
I could see it on the spoolteks or some other more permanant bait, but even the Keitechs aren't that expensive.
>>
>>1000676
One small bottle will last you hundreds of uses. All it takes is a little drop to fix a rip. I have one keitech swing impact fat with 10 repairs and it still works great.

and how on earth could you be sure it hardens if youve never tried it? pvc glue melts the pvc (plastisol) which most plastic baits are made of. It bonds pvc pipes together by melting the plastic ..mend it and 3:16 are made from pvc glue and stabilizers, they didnt invent anything new they just package it. its old news among swimbait guys. Also if your mend it goes gummy which it will, add a few drops of mek and it will thin it back to normal...

Holy fucking shit boys. I'm not kidding when I say I've caught more bass today in one outing than ever before in my life. I'm taking a little break right now to post this. I've seen no jokes probably 3-400 bass all schooled up along the entire stretch of shore line. I catch one almost every single cast. I brought 5 rod/reel combos and I've managed to catch a fish with every single one except my front rod. I got 8-9 blow ups on my popper frog but I wasn't able to get hooked up. The biggest one I got so far was definitely bigger than that last one I caught last week. Also that UL combo I got is insane. Been throwing a mini spinner bait and the bass have been absolutly destroying it. Gunna try and break 100 fish catches today

Lake George, NY. Think mercury is less of an issue here vs the midwest, but also levels are lower for lakers vs pike or bass. I eat mostly perch and keep a handful of lakers a year.

>>1000818
It doesn't take much to set the hook, you just have to be patient and time it right so the fish actually has the whole bait in its mouth when you try and set it.

You will know when you set it too soon. The bass will hold onto the bait and you think you have a fish on, then he lets go after retrieving it a few feet and you get the bait back to shore without the hook even exposed.

look for the shape of the head. cottons-moccasins have a fat diamond rattlesnake-viper looking head. snakes with pinner smooth tapered heads are rarely venomous. if you see a moccasin kill it.

The second pic I think is a moccasin. It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like it has the dark bar through the eyes like pic related.

You can also tell them apart from water snakes pretty easily by looking at the eyes in general. If it's got a vertical pupil like a cat it's a moccasin. Most if not all water snakes have rounded pupils. Moccasins also have a second "nostril" which is actually the a heat-sensing organ called a pit (circled on pic related). Almost all of the venomous snakes (except coral snakes) in North America are pit vipers and will have that.
>>
>>1000883
Are you fishing around structure that your line could get snagged on? I was running 6lb flouro all day today and didnt break off once. For pike fishing, depending on the size you expect to catch, 15+ pound braid should be good.

Another good thing to do is run your fingers down the last few feet of line or so to make sure its all still good and there isnt any scrapes or cuts caused by it rubbing on something. If not as soon as you hook up it will snap at that weak point

Compare with pic related which is a water snake. Also yeah what >>1000866 said is true, you can look at head shape but some water snakes will flatten their heads out when threatened to make them look like they're diamond shaped like the rattlers/cottonmouths
>>
>>1000870
Yes. Those numbers on the spool aren't really ratings for the weight the reel can handle, they are just line capacities. And since braid is thinner, a spool that says 150yds of 8lb mono will probably hold like 150yds of 20lb braid. For the actual weight rating of the reel, you need to look at the specs online or whatever and find how high the drag can go. Because theoretically you could put 80lb braid on a reel like that which says 150yds of 8lb mono, but you will only get like 50yds of line on the reel, light lures won't cast for shit, and you will have a hell of a time reeling in a 30lb fish when the drag on the reel can only go up to 9lbs.

>>1000876
Yeah I don't think she will be the one who expects me to pay $250 to get her hair did, but I do need to start bugging her a little more. Like even if she wants to wait some time before I get to fuck her, she could at least come thru and watch a movie so we could cuddle a bit. But her shitty work schedule also hampers those opportunities a bit.

When she gets here I'm gonna see if she wants me to run thru dunkin and try n get that black girl to take down my number if she still there lol.

>>1000883
Age and use def kills mono. You are supposed to change it at minimum every spring and even more often if you fish a lot or the UV rays get to it a lot.

Flouro is good with abraision resistance so it's the way to go if you are fishing around piers with sharp edges or sharp rocks. But flouro is still pretty close to mono as far as diameter of line for a given strength and braid will always be thinner and lighter.

The old dude I'm staying with has a little stream on his property with some tiny 2-3 inch fish that he said is good for tempura.

I built a fish trap of an old soda bottle and actually caught one of them. Didn't think the trap would work.

Might have to build a few of them to bring with me when I hit the road. If I camp near a stream and set them up for the night, I'll have extra breakfast in the morning.

River or just pull all your line off and reel it back in between your fingers. Or just spool some braid.
>>
>>1001026
It's certainly one of the struggles of fishing. I lost two nice blue wing olives I tied last time I was out chasing bookies. Keep extra shit on you and always be ready to replace something.

Try a few artificials or use live or natural bait once in a while. Nothing wrong with using gulp or making some stink bait up.
>>
>When you feel yourself get snagged be gentle. Most of the time trying to pop something loose right off the bat is a good way to get it really snagged.

>Whenever I get a lure stuck I put some slack in the line and hold the rod tip high and shake it lightly. This works for me about 75% of the time. If that doesn't work I'll take up the slack and do a couple quick jerks. If that doesn't work I'll try the bow and arrow method.

>Worst case I just point my rod at the snag and walk backwards until the line break/knot breaks or the lure comes free.

>Don't do the last one if you're using heavy braid though, you could fuck up your reel. Use a wooden dowel or big stick or something to wrap the braid around and pull from that.

I wrote this a few threads back. I'm assuming you're newish to fishing? Once you get good at feeling the bottom and can feel what your lure is doing you'll lose less stuff. Don't be afraid to slow down. I've found that even if the fish are wanting something moving fast a lot of them will still hit slow moving stuff.
>>
>>1001130
Meant for >>1001026

And losing lures is going to happen, but you can cut down on it a bit. Also if it's stuck and you've tried everything else just get your line tight and with your rod tip at about a 45* angle just slap the butt of the rod straight now. Works pretty okay, but again, using braid be careful. Don't want to snap your rod over a $5 lure.

The marabou jig is a favorite for one of my local anglers.

Basically fishing a wooly bugger but with the advantage of jig action it seems to me.

It seems like all you need is a feather to make one; perhaps I could attach some from geese feathers that I come across?

I'd need to attach it to the jig somehow.
As well maybe you could put a feather at the end of a plastic worm?

Thanks guys. The only thing that the line is running through are weeds. The line is new on the spool but has been sitting in my closet for a few years since I just got back into it. I like using snell knots for hooks and jansik specials for lures.

So say that I'm using between 1/8 to 3/8 oz lures around no sharp edges with a spincast reel and medium to medium heavy rod. What type/pound test do you guys think I could use?

>>
>>1001360
It wasn't me but I've seen a surfcaster hit a pelican out of the sky with a big ass sinker. It spiraled out landing in the ocean and I didn't see it resurface. Probably died.
>>
>>1001360
When I was young, I was fishing with my buddy for carp at this little pond by his house. Had bread and corn or whatever and the rods were just chilling on the rocks and we were a couple feet away.

All of a sudden his rod goes flying into the water and he is fuckin furious. Like 15min later, I get a bit on my rod. Set hook, reel in, and on the end of my line is his rod. He grabs the rod, reels it in, and lands the big carp on the end of it that dragged it into the pond.

I guess other good story was when I was at this lake with a neighbor kid and we rented a rowboat for the day while families were at the beach. I'm fishin off one side of this rowboat and he's on the other. Get my hook caught in a lilly pad and yank it out and the hook comes flying past my face and lodges into his back so deep. Had to row my ass off for what seemed like an hour just to get back to shore and help.

Or when I was at the coast my buddy had a line in on the other side of the dock probably 20 yards away. He went inside and I was just casting a lure around seeing how the action was before I hopped in the kayak.
Long story short I managed to snag my buddies line which had a ~24 inch trout on the other end. Get the fish up close to me I was pulling it up over the bulkhead it shook and got off. I think that's almost the most disappointed I've ever been.

In my experience sunnies are very opportunistic and will just bite whatever they see dropping into the water.

But it's up to them to decide if they put the whole thing in their mouth. I think they like to wrestle with whatever they bite since i typically get a lot of small ones bite my plastic grub, but not on the hook, and run with it.

If i gave them slack and let them take it for longer, not setting the hook, i could probably get more, but i dont want to gut hook any so like to just keep the line tight and nail the ones that get the hook in their bite

Oh I haven't seen them at that price. That is pretty good. Surf pointers are pretty solid but they dive deeper than flashminnow so sometimes they can't be used when it's too shallow. Also, the flashminnow can suspend almost perfectly straight on pause ( it floats up very slowly but still straight for me since I had to change the stock hook to gamakatsu #6 which is slightly smaller than the stock #6 hook due to dullness after long term use). Meanwhile, the surf pointer sink quicker head first on pause. So I assume that flashminnow has better action on pause.

I've been using my dad's old rods for fishing catfish and bass in our area. I was thinking of picking up a bait cast combo. I was wondering if this was the way to go for a beginner

>be me
>think I'm smart
>constantly remind my uncle how I need to establish a bait fish population before putting any bass or like in the water
>says to me "you sure bass wouldn't eat those little bullhead?"
>confidently tell him no
>get home and start researching it
>Mfw some people strictly use small bullhead as bass bait and it apperntly gets them pretty huge
>I could have been moving bass from my grandpas to that bigger pond this whole year but I didn't know any better

Anytime a lipless would be good. Action is more important than colors, but if you have a lake with shad that would be best color to match.

I think it's going to work out really well now that I've realized this. Look at pic related. The much larger pond I plan to move the bass to is filled with thousands and thousands of those little shits. I've never seen any of them get any bigger either. Imagine how fat and disgusting the bass will get after feasting on them all year.

What I need to do now is find the safest way to transport large numbers of bass. I'm not sure if I want to invest in an airator or just get some of those oxygen stone things you throw in the livewell. The two ponds are only 12 or so minutes apart so I think it should be fine but I'll be upset if any of them get killed in the process. I also am concerned with the time of the year since they are just about to start spawning. I think I'll limit myself to only taking the smallest ones for now and then once the spawn is done ill move the bigger ones.

I'm not sure if any of you have ever done anything like this but any tips would be appreciated. The last thing I want to do is pull out a bunch of bass only to have them all die in attempt to transport them to a bigger body of water

this is what we do for my buddys pond. though I dont know what your pond looks like but his has a lot of river rocks and cattails for baitfish and craws to hide. If you dont have a retreat spot for baitfish you need to make one.

Hey /out/,

I'm a novice prepper who usually resides on /k/, but I figure you need more than stored ammo and canned beans to keep you alive--I'd like to learn to fish for survival purposes. I'd like to keep it simple, don't want to buy a shit ton of equipment.

I tried fishing a couple of times in the past week, and had no luck at all. What am I doing wrong? I live in Maine if that helps. Fishing on small lakes and large ponds. I think there's only trout in there. Can anyone help me with what equipment/techniques I should use?
