this is what we do for my buddys pond. though I dont know what your pond looks like but his has a lot of river rocks and cattails for baitfish and craws to hide. If you dont have a retreat spot for baitfish you need to make one.

I had 40lb Super 8 on a reel once and then swapped down to 30lb. There is one anon who swears that if you do braid, you gotta do the 8 but regular PowerPro is bretty gud.

If the line is still good, you could always just add more. But like if you're only going to add 15-20yds, I prefer to unspool the reel, add the 15yds at the bottom, then uni-uni knot and put the 120yds of old line on top so u don't have to cast through knots.

Use jig with weight you think is appropriate with the depth you are fishing. The slower it moves in the water the easier it is for the fish to eat it. Cast it out, let sink to the the bottom. Lift 1-3 feet off them bottom and reel in slack while letting it sink back down. Keep doing this until you feel bites. Don't set the hook until you are sure the fish has it in its mouth and you can see the line moving as it swims away with it. Most of the time they will eat it as its sinking towards the bottom. Sometimes they will bite it when you are lifting it but usually they only bite he very end. Let them hit it several times before setting the hook. I've had fish follow a jig for the entire length of a 40 foot cast and he pretty much jumped on the shore as I was reeling it up to cast again.

Also trailers are a must. Get something goes a little bit further than the length of the skirt. The more flappy the appendages the better. Try and match the color of the trailer with the skirt pattern

The knot always bother me if it's anywhere near the max casting range of line for me so I switch it out. I just had to respool a whole spool of braid that was only 1 year old because i lost quite a bit of line a few times with knots that form deeper into the line and had to be cut.

It's not bad considering I'm using it to throw $18 lure already and I don't want to cheap out on the line and mess it up

Lad, I just started rocking shit on Texas rigged worms. Not a single hang up today even fishing the canal which has trees 70% around the banks. When you get one in a tree, reel it in slowly so it doesn't pendulum when hanging off a branch, you don't want it wrapping around. When the lure is all the way up, touching the branch, I normally try and reel it in slowly over it, often letting it go back down to try another orientation. If not I pop it quickly off the branch, and sometimes it'll hop over other branches if I happened to cast it far into a tree.

Again, Texas rigged worms with the hook not exposed. That worked for me and I got three pickerel + a bass.

If you want to fish other lures like something for bluegill you'll just have to find better spots- or get good

I smacked my 2nd trout and a few dink smallies on the river today.

Lost two fish on a spinner bait, got one smallie on it but the others were all on crappie jigs.

Id think the trebel hook would make hook ups easier, didn't seem like so.

What colors do you guys use for straight up shit-stained water? There's a new spot I've been going to that I've yet to throw artificial out yet because the water is beyond muddy.

Also fuck this lake in Boca. There are two right across the street from eachother and they are connected by a real small creek or spillway deal. The one on the south side is kinda hard to fish from shore, one on the north side is easy to get to and even fishing around these trees is easy. I have been there maybe 5 times and never landed shit on the north side. Last time I was there, stopped by the south side before I left and managed to catch a couple small bass. With that warm front that came thru, wanted to try the north side again under good conditions and didn't get shit.

I think the one on the south side is deeper, at least the Google Maps pic makes it look that way or the north one is just more muddy. But anyway this north one seems to have more turtles than fish and I really want to go over there with an AR or some shit and just start taking shots at little snapper noses poking out of the water. Seriously there are so many turtles that they hit Texas rigs on the regular and tear up baits.

Generally you only use a swivel for cut bait/baits or lures that will twist your line. If an inline spinner is working correctly it won't cause any line twist so the extra hardware isn't needed.

The old Japanese dude I'm staying with is a bit crazy.

Today we ate ア イ ゴ sashimi. It's a poisonous fish, so no one else eats it. But the dude insisted on it, I was a bit vary at first, but it's easily the best sashimi I've ever tasted. The taste and texture beats even fatty tuna.

I'm probably the first foreigner ever to taste this fish.

What do I do if a fish swims up to my lure but doesn't bite?
Yesturday on the river I saw something, maybe a carp, approach my jig. It was near the bank so I couldn't do much else with it.

Once i recasted it got spooked and swam away as soon as it plopped in the water. Interesting at how sensitive they are to just a lil plop of a 1/32 oz jig

I'm a novice prepper who usually resides on /k/, but I figure you need more than stored ammo and canned beans to keep you alive--I'd like to learn to fish for survival purposes. I'd like to keep it simple, don't want to buy a shit ton of equipment.

Here's my plan boys. If anyone has any input feel free to share. I have 2 120qt coolers. And a big (not sure of dimensions) plastic storage tub. I cleaned then all and just bought 3 air pumps with an air stone to diffuse the oxygen into the water. I have another separate small cooler in going to us to keep 2 bags of ice frozen in. I'll break up that bag and put pieces into a small plastic bag and put that in the cooler/tub so no chemicals in the ice water fuckinf anything up. I read I should also add some hydrogen hydroxide and some salt so I will do that once I put water from the pond into tanks. Anything I'm missing? It's only a 12 minute drive so I'm crossing my fingers none die

Today's mission was a success. My livewell system that I devised worked wonderfully and the bass appeared to be unphased by being transported. My buddy tagged along last minute which was good to have someone else there to catch them quicker. He's pretty new so he only caught a few but on his first cast he hooked by far (again for the 3rd time) the biggest bass I've ever seen out of there. It jumped a few times and he didn't know how to fight it properly and when it jumped it shook the hook. We ended up taking 35 small to medium sized fish and all of them lived. I got pulled over on our way dusting transport but thankfully he didn't ask about the illegal fish transport. Didn't even give me a ticket for speeding. Not a bad day at all. I'm actually about to go try up a fat steak as I type this.

It's still a way to get yourself a meal. Especially if you're on the move for some reason, you don't have time, space and equipment to set up a huge net.

But if you insist, I guess I want to learn to fish with a minimal/camping mindset. I don't want to catch impressive or difficult or rare fish, I just want to reliably catch a meal while hiking and camping around, with a tiny amount of equipment that won't take up much extra space in the pack (other than the rod). Pretty much just trout, maybe bass or something as well, just anything easy, plentiful, and tasty.

I'll check out the pastebin. I'm in downeast ME, have access to a few small to medium sized lakes and ponds. All fresh water. Budget is extremely limited. I already have a basic fishing rod (with the closed-in reel and button), a small assortment of rubber worms and wriggly lures, a couple of shiny metal lures, and of course small hooks, sinkers, and bobbers. Experience is obviously very limited as well.

Generally wont need a leader for most fish. You could try throwing something cheap to see whats in the water if you've got an expensive lure or put on a 12-14 lb leader which will keep most fish from cutting you off so long as you change it occasionally after toothy fish bite. I use 15 lb braid for trout/redfish/whiting and never use a leader of any sort unless I start catching shark (which still doesnt usually cut my line) or flounder.

Idk what a sound is but for red drum I generally use artificials. Smaller redfish (under 25 inches) are usually extremely aggressive and will hit swim baits and fast moving jigs but for the larger ones you usually have to hop something along the bottom as if you were fishing for bass. Gulp jerkbaits in new penny or most of the mirrodine suspending jerks work really well for them.

As for your 6 lb line that is really most likely too light for saltwater, the lower end of what I use is 8 lb and even that is too low for anything other than open water flats fishing for trout. I'd really suggest spooling with 15-20 lb braid but otherwise you could use it for catching bait or put some sand fleas on it with a carolina rig and catch whiting and shit in the surf if you're gonna be on a beach.

Some are but you can get the small colapsable ones for around $20 and the are lite and will catch a fair amount of small fish. You can then eat the fish meat and use the heads and guts to bait the fish trap AND set a body grip trap (pic related) for coons. Coons and other small mammals that you trap are higher in calories and provide fur and leather.

Ok let us start small by targeting "pan fish" first. Tie a small hook on the end of your line then put a split wieght about 2- 3 inches above it and a bobber 6-8 inches above that. Bait the hook with a pinch of live worm and cast out and wait for the bobber to go under. If 5 mins go by with no bite cast to a different spot. If you still have nothing after 30 minutes move a ways away and try again.

What size are those split shots? In the future you should probably go to Walmart and get those assortment packs of hooks and split shots, won't be more than like $15. And I hate those red and white bobbers but they work. I think 1" may be a little small so if you try and run more than ~1/8oz of weight, it's going to pull them underwater a bit.

But bobbers are cheap too. The taller balsa ones are real easy to see and the round foam ones won't crack like the plastic ones.

You can catch carp flyfishing easily enough. The trick is having flies they go for - clouser swimming nymphs, dragonfly nymphs (you'll have to tie these yourself) and small crayfish imitations. Grass carp are 2x as smart as Bass and are not easily fooled. Also, you have to cast/land the fly within 3 feet of the carp (they have very poor vision)

use a really small hook quarter oz sinker. 6lb line.

You can fish pickerel just like bass. Pickerel are a bit more aggressive so more aggressive lures work well. I prefer Spinnerbaits and crankbaits as plastics tend to be destroyed after 1 or two hits.

They are straight. Probably better in clear water. Upside is with the hook on top you can run them through a lot of bullshit without getting snagged but downside is they aren't the best for setting the hook well and keeping the fish on.

I’ll be heading out for the Manistee River in Michigan’s north west lower peninsula this weekend and walleye seems to be the target, as the steelhead salmon run is over but what kinda lures / rig should I use for walleye on the Manistee?

Years back when shore fishing for walleye on Lake St.Claire I used [pic related] and had good luck but will the same work on the Manistee?

When you put the bullet weight on the Texas rig do you make a leader for it and use it as a separate rig? I never use the proper bullet weight setup because I use a snap swivel but I've been thinking about making small rigs with a half foot leader and bullet weight to attach to a hook I can always use for reflexes rigging

Is that a lucky craft flash pointer? It's a jerkbait so it would work well on cooler water. That would dive around 3-5 feet so if there's appropriate water for it, it would work.


Tfw today is the first time a cheaper lure outfish my $18 dollar lure on the surf. The water was super calm and cool and a simple zoom super fluke on a weighted offset hook get good amount of bite. Pull 2 halibut out of a trough. One was 1 inch short of legal size. Memecrank only got 1 hit if a small halibut

I don't think he's talking about that. He's tryin to do what I do, I use flouro and tie up a Texas rig with a surgeon's loop on the end and just hook that to the snap. That way I can switch from a Texas rig to a jerkbait without ever having to tie a knot.

But that surgeon's loop ends up being the weak point so I like to run 20lb flouro for those T-rig pre tied leaders.

I have no idea, (I'm a casual occasional fisherman, not some pro) it's just a pic I got off the Internet but I believe it's generically called a "plug minnow" and I used something similar years back shore fishing for walleye on Lake St.Clair and it seems pretty effective.

But again; what should I be using on the Manistee River?

Doing an image search for various combinations of "walleye river fishing lures rigs", etc. turns a bazillion unrelated images.

Looks like a jerkbait. Every company has them. Rapala Husky Jerks or X-Raps, Yo-Zuri suspending jerkbaits, etc. Plug is kinda a broad term. Some of them float and dive (to all different depths depending on the bait) and some suspend a few feet under the surface and they all have slightly different action.

Walleye are close to bass, they are predators so as long as you mimic something they will feed on, you're good.

I mean they work. Just make sure the knots on your swivels aren't fucked and the line above it isn't too beat up. I try not to reccommend it to people because it isn't the proper way but damn it's convenient. I have a bunch of them tied out so it's easy to swap them if I'm running a 4/0 with 1/8oz and want to swap to 3/0 and 1/4oz without retying everything.

I mean it isn't that difficult. Just if you want to try a different bait with different sized hook or you want to swap the weight for a different presentation, you have to retie the knot.

I do it because I have ADD with baits and I'm always swapping stuff out. I use those snaps on pretty much everything unless I'm running a spinnerbait or buzzbait where you can't really use a snap swivel.

Swivel, 4" line with bubble bobber on it, snap. Then I have some flies on about 8" of florocarbon with a swivel on the other end.

That way if I want to stop tossing meeps and jerk baits and such I can take them off the snap add the bobber and select a fly to try.
