A 600cc sportbike is also an acceptable first bike for a grown man who has already learned how to do a one parking space U turn on a loaner/MSF class shitbike.

Nothing is funnier than a mature adult who already has the basics down going out and buying a GS500.

Reposting from last thread.

Interested in getting this bike, Honda 250XL I believe, if someone here knows for sure let me know!

I'd like to have this bike for just puttering around town whenever I'm not using my FZ6. The seller is asking $1700 for it which I believe is way too high for this, especially with the way the chain looks and the mud caked all over the bike. (Of course I'm gonna remove the milk-crate too)

Would $600 be a good counter offer? If not that then what? I'd like to haggle a bit, there's no way I'm gonna pay so much for this putt-putt bike.
I'd like to restore it and make it look nicer.

Thank you /dbt/!

>dad can't stop gushing about bike I found for him
>he already rode like 3k km on it
>says it needs new brake pads
>buy brake pads, visit him today
>look at old ones, still 3mm material left, put them back in
>gear store is open today
>he decides he'll look at textiles because his 30 year old leathers are kind of inconvenient and thirty years old
>also a new helmet because the 15+ year old one is falling apart
>and maybe new boots
The last time we looked at helmets for him he was being a pain in the ass, but now that he's been riding for a few weeks again he remembers what helmets should feel like.
>go and try on gear
>find some comfortable, good quality textiles
>literally the second helmet we look at fits perfectly and costs half what I expected
>get 100 € off of the purchase because store anniversary or some shit
Wouldn't have expected gear shopping with him to be as fun as it ended up being, given past experiences.
The only thing I hate about the store is the boots section. Little variety, everything is really fucking expensive for what's on offer. Like, fuck off, I'm not going to pay as much for waterproof boots as for a helmet.

Everybody talks SHIT about the Ninja 250... until the insurance bill comes in. $318 FULL coverage for a year. I've wrecked her once and got a $2,600 payout. Fixed it for $600 and pocketed the 2 grand. Thats what I paid for her in the first place. So, I pretty much got a free bike by wrecking it and then fixing it.

I also vote for bringing shit instead of wasting money on track food and drinks. It's fucking trivial to pack and unpack.
>>
>>17815483
They were decent machines in their day.

You never want to let it sit without draining the carbs because they somewhat suck to remove and install for cleaning. They don't suck to clean but make sure you segregate removed parts by the carb they came off of.

I'd offer in the high teens for it.

I visited an HD dealer yesterday and threw my leg over one. It felt weird as fuck. It is 4" longer, and 4" shorter than my Silvereing. It felt tiny as fuck, even though it weighs a hundred pounds more. Between that and the feet-forward controls (which I'm not used to), it just felt really bizarre. It is supposed to do 34 degrees of lean, but the only suspension adjustments are preload on the rear.

Buying a US brand would be great, but I'd rather get an XSR900 and an FZ09 for the same price.

Ride it as you would a completely different bike at first, take it slow and learn how it reacts to the extra weight in different situations. Also if she's never ridden on the back of a bike before make sure she knows how not to fuck you up it corners.

Japanese sportbikes require less maintenance than any dual sport

Is it a good idea to get a mechanic to look at a second hand bike I want to buy?

Am I wasting my time?

He is 100% right...?
most Japanese sports bikes will do 100,000km before needing anything replaced in the engine, even the most reliable dual sport will be lucky to do 30,000km without a new piston and rings.

BMWs (at least the older ones) were made to ride and ride comfortably.

Just makes sure you feed it enough oil and maintain it properly, they'll lost long enough with mostly just small repairs you can do yourself.

Weird situation.
I'm going to be inheriting a nice Harley Fatboy next week. Idk how to ride a motorcycle. Have one peer who has a dirtbike track I can go learn on I suppose.
I'd love to ride but no one really has the time to teach me. The motorcycle courses in my county and all surrounding counties, and all the surrounding surrounding counties and all their surrounding surrounding surrounding counties only offer the course on the weekends and that's when I work and I don't have the PTO to take off and pursue that.

I figured I could buy a used bike locally and just hope for the best odt. So, anyone been in these shoes? How retarded am I? How should I go about pursuing motorcycles?
>>
>>17817002
easiest way i've found to teach people to be good pillion riders: tell them look over your shoulder into the turn. the goal of this is to make sure they don't lean with or against the bike, just stay perpendicular with it.

provided they dont lean against the bike it'll behave pretty much the same, just sluggish. braking takes longer, the bike wants to wheelie more, low speed instability is exaggerated.

all you gotta do to not fuck up is take it easy.

>>
>>17818257
Post county, maybe. Seems unusual to me that there wouldn't be a weekday class somewhere near you.
That's an expensive bike to learn on, for sure. If you can't take the class, you can always go the OG route of getting a permit and experimenting on your own until you feel comfortable taking the test. If you go that route you should def see about getting a beater bike off Craigslist for a few months at least. Even if you do find a way to take a class the beater bike sounds like a good idea to me.
So basically you have the right idea. The course is good stuff and even if you get your license, you should take it sometime anyway if you get the chance, but for me most of its value was getting me comfortable with handling a bike without being afraid out losing my money if I dropped it. there's only a couple of things I think *learned* from it that I don't think I'd have learned on my own (or at least not understood the extent to which they were true):
>LOOK AT THE EXIT OF THE CORNER NOT STRAIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR WHEEL it's magic how much this affects your ability to turn I swear
>USE THE CLUTCH LUKE it's not a car, it has a wet clutch and balancing throttle and clutch is literally how you get the bike to do anything slower than what idling in 1st wants to give you (which on harleys, among other bikes, is quite a lot)
>don't be afraid to "flick" the bike over or up to perform sharp S swerves or to exit corners cleanly, it can take it
Watch Twist Of The Wrist 2, there's always a version on yt, pick with or without cheesy actors, pic related (I like with), practice intentionally with goals and don't just ride to the store.

I appreciate the advice and insight. Right now I.. kinda know how to shift. That's really it. Trying to get my ass on anything I can if the owner is willing just to feel how it sits, rides at low speeds... That's all I've got. I'm doing that to kinda just get a feel for what I'm looking for in a beater. As for maintenance, idk what I'm doing but my guy with the dirtbikes has offered to help with what he can and has pointed out duds on Craigslist to me and why they're bad. Said I should get something fuel injected or anticipate cleaning carbs and spending more time working on it than riding it. Found a 1982 Suzuki gs850 for $800. Dude has the title but says there's an oil leak "he hasn't looked into" but still rides it (85xxxmiles)

That's just kinda where I'm at now. Feels weird.

Oh and I didn't get overtaken at all.
Getting more confident as well. Braking later, hitting late apexes, getting on the throttle early (easy because lolnopower) and scraping footpegs (easy because commuter). No knee down so far, but I'm getting there.
Had two oh shit moments but didn't deviate from the line much: braked too late once and ran the corner wide, and once forgot one upshift so I went down into first instead of second and skidded the rear into a corner. Held the line regardless.

I fucking swear it's a conspiracy with the faggots who make overpriced bike stands

>centerstand+sidestand+rafters+straps = you can do literally any work on the bike, from dropping the engine to taking off both ends of the suspension and leaving it a hanging frame. The rafters are just a safety measure in case the centerstand fails, as long as it's attached somehow the bike rests on it. if engine mounted, a bike without an engine is light enough for rafters anyways.
>no centerstand = you need SUPER DUPER special stands for removing either end of the suspension, and then another if that involves the headstock
