>Driving Large Vehicles For Fun And Profit, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Personal Hygene:

Find a community college or specialist 'school' that can get you a CDL, either finance it or pay out of pocket, then get on board at a company that offers tuition reimbursement.

Stick out your two years in the meat grinder to pay your dues, then decide once you're debt free whether or not you want to stick around.

There are also companies that will train you in exchange for you signing a (typically) 2-year contract, and while these are generally regarded as a total shitfest, it's not the worst thing in the world if that is your only option.

That said, aim for a recognizable company - Swift, Prime, and Schneider all get a lot of flak for being 'puppy mill' companies, but the true shitters are companies like CR England, CRST, and a handful of others that aren't coming to mind.

Nine times out of ten, a smaller, locally-owned-and-operated 'Mom and Pop' company will be your best bet.

What's the story with those long hood Petes anyway? Special model plate? Does it house a special engine with more cylinders, or just more cooling?
>>

Prosthetic penis enhancement has gone off the rails.

They can be fitted with longer motors, but rarely are, since nobody has made a V12 or I8 in a long while. On the upside, any old 14L sits right down in it without having to shove a cylinder or two into the dash, so they can be pulled sraight up and out, and you don't need to smuggle in a 12 year old Vietnamese girl to work on the back of the block.

Was this configuration ever a thing? I know back in the old days they did some weird shit with the big diesels but a straight 8 seems pretty unlikely, IDK.

Obsolete diesel engines fascinate me for some reason. Doesn't YBJ have some sort of weird 1970s Cummins V8 diesel that's super rare or some shit?

Which companies hire NEETs? I have zero verifiable work experience or references. I know by law they have to check at least 3 year employment history. What if I give them my buddy's number and he pretends to be my old boss when they call him up. Will that work?
>>
>>17781124
Swift will hire you anyway. Just say you were self-employed or a college dropout.

From what I've heart Swift will ask me for tax returns if I claim to be self employed. I have worked for months at a time under the table for cash but they were fly-by-night operations and the owners have since disappeared off the face of the earth so I can't get a legitimate reference or tax returns. As for college... well let's just say I'm past the typical "college age" so that story won't fly.

Has anyone faked a reference? I think that is my only choice. How thorough are they in checking the references you put down?
>>
>>17781719
Just get your CDL and apply, you'd be surprised how little you need to get hired as a truck driver.

Yeah that was plan B. If I can't get hired through company school I'm just gonna get my CDL on my own and hope someone will take me. My worry is that if I get my CDL on my own I still wont get hired. There are no cheap schools or community colleges where I live so I can't afford to not get hired.

I appreciate the replies.
>>
>>17781719
Carrier I'm with were fucking nazis about prior history. Self employment was ok but you had to have at least 1099's for the period. As for references they checked every one listed in the last ten years and if they didn't get a response from a listed reference for whatever reason you were on hold until they did. However long it took. Some guys in my orientation class were still on hold weeks later so faking a reference might not work with a mega.
>>
>>17781797

Yeah I've heard some megas like Prime will want to know everything about you short of a DNA sample and anal probe so I'm not gonna even bother with them. From what I understand self-employed is a red flag for megas and they require more paperwork than if you just put down your mcdonald's job.

When I mean "fake" I mean giving them my buddy's number rather than fake number. Of course I would prep my friend on what to say beforehand. I was just curious if they are gonna check through state records to see if my buddy is a legitimate employer. Or verify the business address, that sort of thing.
>>
>>17780328
>>17780351
VT-903. 14.8L of disappointment. Old timers called them nine-oh-nothings, because they were huge, but had a whopping 900ft/lbs or torque. Schneider ran a few thousand of them for an average of 3.5 million miles.
>>
>>17781853
>I was just curious if they are gonna check through state records to see if my buddy is a legitimate employer. Or verify the business address, that sort of thing.
I wouldn't put it past them if they get any sense something is "off" about the reference.

Remember, drivers try shit all the time so there's probably very little HR or Safety hasn't heard or seen before. Including your idea.
>>
>Our terminal has a rollercoaster

By proxy, the Springfield terminal does, on parts of 44, any of the farm roads around the city and the entrance road into Prime which we affectionately call Mayfair Pass.

Mayfair Pass is not a real mountain pass though it has a huge hill in the middle, but once every couple of months drivers who are either dicking on their phones or the QC run off of it and roll their truck since the road is like 5 feet higher than the ground it's built on. I've watched it happen.

>>17779854

At the sand hauling place I used to work for, someone forgot to dump the air out of the trailer bags of a dollyed off pneumatic sand trailer with 30 tonnes of sand in it, and the legs eventually got pushed forward and bent from the air draining and pushing on em.

I'm so tired of all of it. I finally get my permit and I still can't get behind the wheel since I didn't do their special drug test and DOT exam there. I went somewhere else. I'm going through Truck Nation School. Super sick of it. I was told at the DMV that since I'm not applying for endorsements (I'm so lost), I can come back with my Class A and just take a written test to get my endorsements for doubles and Hazmats.

The school wanted $1500 upfront or $500 down with $250 every two weeks for 8 weeks if I recall correctly for just the Class A. They also wanted $1900 upfront for Class A w/endorsements. But I couldn't afford the $1900, and the DMV told me I can just pay like $43 and get the endorsements myself.

What do I do, experienced ones? I just wanna make a lot of money and drive away from my problems. And I still can't drive yet.

I'm in California if it matters.

Damn. I like it tho.

In unrelated news, finally managed to get my hands on that diesel Jetta. Gonna have to register it and all that this weekend. All it needs right now is a paint touchup on the driver's side, fix an oil leak from around the timing cover, and sometime in the next 20k miles it's due for a timing belt. Will probably let the dealer handle that and just dump the money on it since I don't trust myself to do that on my DD.

Noice. Now that I've got that Jetta, the next step in the game plan is to ditch the Focus, and funnel the money saved on car payments toward the credit cards. Once they're low enough, I'm gonna start looking for local work. I have a guaranteed local gig through a friend but it's cement truck work, and technically 'self-employed,' basically just work as much as I want but it's his truck so he takes a cut. He claims I could take home $1800/wk like one guy that used to work for him but that doesn't count for taxes or the insurance I'll have to get for myself.

They ferry the drivers to the yard and you get to pick which one sucks you off but the catch is you're his bitch until you get your CDL, run 40000 miles and get off his truck, so choose your cock wisely.

I am curious about truck stops. Do all (most) truckers go inside and socialize with each other at the truck stop bar every evening, having conversations with different strangers every day? Or do most truckers just stick to themselves and sit in their sleeper all evening/night.

A family friend owns 2 different trucks, one without a sleeping area, and one with. He said with my permit, he will help me practice and get comfy with the truck. Which is very nice of him.

I just wanna make sure I get paid fairly. I have no idea what amount to expect.

40 hours behind the wheel, I suppose. I've spent some time on tests and whatnot.

You talking about getting paid once you get a job? Also be sure to check CA's CDL A requirements. They may require more than just 40 hrs behind the wheel before your final test for the CDL. TN required that 150 I had logged. TN also doesn't supply the truck to test in, of course, so you'd have to bring the one your friend would be letting you learn in. >>17787251
I wouldn't bother unless you decide to drive OTR for an indefinite length of time and make money to retire on. If you're only going to drive for 5-10yrs I'd just stick to company equipment.

Salary always, then hourly on top of that when in the field, based off of how many hours we charge the oil companies.

We did get some stuff done that had been on my mind for a couple of weeks, but we hadn't had enough down time to get to until now, so I suppose shouldn't gomplain.

5 years? No. 8-10 years would be the sweet spot you go O/O. That'll give you 2 years to get enough experience in for insurance companies to take you seriously, a year to figure out what you're doing, another year or two to run your initial truck purchase into the ground while getting a down payment on a respectable rig together, and 3-5 years for you to enjoy turning 6 figures a year for next to no work within the lifespan of your equipment, and $30-75k resale on it when you're done. You'll be sitting on an easy quarter million in the bank for babysitting freight in under a decade.

Thats how it is with a lot of small companies, my dudes.

There are two, sometimes three mechanics available for nine road going trucks and countless pieces of tracked, off-road only equipment and transfer pump trailers, so outside of legitimate mechanical/electrical issues, we take care of the easy/preventative stuff, because who else would?

If we have a breakdown on site and are down for a couple of hours, we don't charge the oil companies for that down time, and therefor we don't get paid those not charged for hours of field pay.

It's in our best interest to ensure the truck can get there and perform the jobs from start to finish since it directly affects our bottom line.

I can tell you are young and have very little practical mechanic or driving experience, especially in the area of where the two overlap. Myself, having mechanical experience (decades) on everything from weedeaters to lawn mowers, small and commercial (large scale) marine, automotive, heavy construction equipent, all level of aircraft, diesel and large truck, large scale hydraulic and electric, and many other areas to lengthy to list... one common denomination that spans the entire list: while they mean well, engineers are idiots who's hands are tied by budget, liability and politics. If things were truly the way you are saying you see them, everything would be more expensive and there would be no need for recalls, lawsuits or warranties. So before you drum up your next pathetic insult attack, just think about that for a moment. Then think about all of the stupid fucking labels you've slapped me with (undoubtedly nearing the entirety of your arsenal) that you have been programmed to use by those whom you've allowed to teach you, that serve only to defend your ego and keep you safely in the box you have allowed society to put you in and keep you, and then think about all of the knowledge you are missing out on by keeping your perspective so narrow.

>All day I'm whipping this 46' trailer around places that are tight for a little straight truck.
That doesn't seem logical. Effective load area length aside, there's probably a good reason why 3+ axle buses can be 49.2 ft in Germany while semi trailers are limited to 44.6 ft. Japan mostly uses straight trucks, too. America must be doing something wrong about its straight trucks if even its spread axle semis are more maneuverable.
>>
>>17790524
I'm just some mook following the internet adventures of his betters but I would argue that buses are usually found on routes that are specifically modified for buses: turnouts, loading lanes, etc. A local delivery truck has to navigate private parking lots that may or may not have been designed for freight delivery and has to account for varying levels of parking lot occupancy whereas a bus lane is reserved.
>>
>>17790674
That's why all other straight vehicles are limited to 39.3 ft in Germany, I didn't mention it to make more of an argument.
>>
>>17790693
Then I can only assume you were taking Bepis a little too literally. I do believe he meant "tight for a straight truck" as meaning his skill exceeds the average; he feels comfortable pulling his trailer through areas that would give the average straight truck driver heartburn.

Perhaps Bepis will clarify after he gets done texting his latest surrogate sister.

>>17789924
The money to be made is on the high end specialized spectrum of the business. You might fare a little better with a family gig, but don't expect over $40k your first two years after taxes. If you aren't pants on head retarded, that'll let you set aside enough cash to buy a $10k truck, $10k trailer, and $10k to run them for 2 months before revenue starts coming in. There's no reason you shouldn't net $100k your first year as an O/O, so once you've got your shit figured out you'll have plenty of resources you upgrade your equipment right before or right after it blows up.
>>
>>17790720
>you'll have plenty of resources you upgrade your equipment right before or right after it blows up.

You seem to be somewhere in that period yourself. How much are you budgeting towards for a replacement rig? >>
>>17791378

Like 70-80% of the weight is on the trailer wheels with eurotrucks.

Literally only need more than one axle if you want steering wheels in the middle (godsend for parking in tight spaces) or plan on hauling >50t over the alps (MORE DRIVE AXLES PLEASE MOMMY).
>>
>>17791378
I'm guessing the axle ratings are a bit different between North America and Europe, and the tech is engineered accordingly. Afaik steer axles are really lightly loaded in North America. I can give you the German ratings if you're interested, metric tonnes (lbs rounded to thousand):

Steer: 10t (22k lbs)
Single drive: 11.5t (25k lbs)
Double drive 11.5t-19t (25k-42k lbs) depending on distance between wheels and suspension

Trailer single: 10t (22k lbs)
Trailer doubles: 11t-18t (24k-40k lbs) depending on distance between wheels
Trailer triples: 21t-24t (46k-52k lbs) depending on distance between wheels

Three axle combination: 28t (62k lbs)
Four axle combination: 36t (79k lbs)
Five or more axle combination: 40t (88k lbs) (44t (97k lbs) in combined road/rail/ship container traffic) or more with permit in which case the axle loads are the decisive factor

As you can see a single drive, triple trailer combination will have axle ratings adding up to 46.5t (102k lbs) but is usually rated for 40t (88k lbs) as a bit of a buffer. Not sure if it's the same in North America, or whether their axle ratings add up to exactly 80k lbs.
>>
>>17791447
Here in 'Murica it's 12k lbs max on the steer axle, 17k/axle or 34k total for double rear axles, same 17k/1 - 34k/2 axles for double trailer axles, or 20k/1 for spread axle trailers.

Wow, that's absolutely nothing on the steer axle. Barely holding the engine and cab in the air then. You can see here that on a standard Euro tractor the fifth wheel is actually in front of the rear axle so that some of the weight gets redistributed to the steer axle. And it needs to because the trailer overhang on the kingpin is up to 1600 mm or 63 inches for less of a fairing gap and better maneuverability.
>>
>>17791386
>Like 70-80% of the weight is on the trailer wheels with eurotrucks.
No its not.

10 tonne on the steer and usually 11-12 tonne on the drive.
>>
>>17791547
Well, that's the rating, but a maxed out combination won't max out the axles unless the weight is concentrated in the wrong place. Overall the tractor will take slightly less than half the combination weight, but that's including the weight of the tractor itself. The load capacity is usually around 27 tons or so, of which roughly two thirds if not more rest on the trailer axles. So focused on the load alone the other comment isn't even that far off.
>>
>>17791573
No its not
>>
>>17791547
I meant most of the weight of the trailer. Eurotrailers have wheels fairly central on the trailer, rather than riiight in the back like ameritrailers.
>>
6 tonne on the steer
17 tonne on the drives
21 tonne on the tri

Straya a best.

>>
>>17791593
Actually most American trailers, especially the 53 footers, don't even have the axles all the way back, it only looks that way because they're so long. I think the rear overhang on American trailers is up to 12 feet, which isn't as much as the European nearly 15 feet but still sizeable. The only trailers with the axles all the way back are for practical reasons (lowboys) or for muh custom truck shitters with stretched frames as well.

>>17791593
What >>17791643 said. Only time the axles are at the tail end of the trailer is when loading, at least for van trailers. When on the road, they're slid up about ten feet or more. A notable exception would be spread-axle flatbeds, like TF's and EF's step-deck, but those are most often 48' instead of 53' so the rearmost axle is still quite a bit closer to the truck than you're thinking.

Turnpike doubles still worry me.

Or that time a couple months ago, idk if anybody remembers but I posted pics of 3 or 4 trucks with these like 150' poles on them. They might have been super tall light poles where they're building a new exit-interchange on I-95 and it was those dollies at the rear with 3 axles. I just imagine one of those coming a little loose and tracking sideways and becoming a huge deathtrap.

Fuck. That's exactly what I was talking about. If those straps slip a couple of degrees, that rear dolly will keep going straight but run parallel to you 3 lanes over.
>>
>>17792333
The transmission switched out of low range, but before it could lock into high range, you moved into 6th and throttled up. With the RPM no longer matching, it couldn't lock into high range, leaving itself between low and high range - effectively in a second neutral position.

The cause is simple, you shifted too quickly between ranges for the transmission to keep up. Not a big problem, just let off the throttle to rev match again and it'll finish the range shift on it's own. Don't need to go back to neutral either. Try not to do the 5-6 shift too quickly in the future. I used to do the same thing in a 13 speed shifting from 4 to 5L.

Sinkholes (not really potholes) in the road? That's where one side (right or left) is severely down while the other side remains level with the road.

More surface area contact on brake shoes/drums than pads/discs.

More surface area = quicker stops.

Much less likely to warp due to uneven temperatures.

Safer due to design. Rear brakes will apply if air supply is lost.

Most 'Murican semi trailers with tandem axles can unlock the axle chassis from the trailer undercarriage so that they can be moved, which readjusts the weight distribution between the truck's rear axles and the trailer's axles. It also can adjust the trailer's turn radius (forward for tighter turns) and make the trailer more stable when being loaded (rearmost for maximum stability).

Best investment I've made in a while is MCT oil supplements. No more getting distracted by hunger 8 hours into my shift. Mio flavor enhancerslet me skip running into a truckstop for an iced coffee in the morning since I'm set with one squirt. A 6" carabiner lets me hang my gym and shower bag off the lip of the top bunk, along with another great investment, a 2 gallon shop vac. A parts cleaning brush is great for keeping the dash dust free between cleanings. I buy knock off magic erasers to keep all the interior plastic stupid clean, and have a gallon jug of simple green concentrate for everything else. 10lb hook and loop tape keeps all the little shit like power strips, scan gauge, and pens from bouncing around, and keeps another great investment, my dash mat, firmly affixed. An 8 foot micro-usb charging cable lets me charge devices with 120VAC from anywhere in the truck while keeping the charger in one place.

What's wrong with a steering wheel knob?

How do rear/additional steering axles work? How are they turned and how are they properly synced up with the front wheels? Hydraulics with position sensors?
>>
>>17793955
The device is often called a "suicide knob" because of being notoriously useless for controlling the wheel during an emergency
>>
>>17793955
You'll learn when the wheel slips from your hand and the knob batters your wrist like a wrecking ball, and you panic for a moment as you try to get your hands back on the wheel.

For backing though they're legit, there's a reason they've become an out-of-the-box feature on forklifts. Even on yard trucks they make sense, but if you're driving on public roads, take the thing off for everyone's safety.

The main strong point for disc brakes is reduced stopping distance. With disc brakes, that distance can be anywhere from 17% to 33% shorter than drum brakes.

Reduced fade is another benefit, especially for vehicles that have more frequent stopping events. Also, service and maintenance on disc brakes is typically simpler and faster than on drums.

Benefits of drums are longer service life of pads.

Question to anybody whose been in the trucking field a minute;
How many truckers actually have diabetes? How many probably have diabetes but don't know/care? How many have diabetes but get DOT waivers/hide their illness?
A good 50% of the drivers I see are morbidly obese and a good chunk of them exhibit the borderline psychotic almost drunken behavior of a diabetic with serious blood sugar issues I learned to recognize from being an EMT. I've even had quite a few drivers nonchalantly talk about being diabetic as well(weirdly enough they are always less obese and act less insane), why is this such a problem and why is the DOT allowing it?

>I don't like being around/interacting with people

Trucking isn't as solitude filled as movies and tv make it out to be though.

You'll still have to deal with lots of people throughout the day: Shippers, receivers, cashiers, truck stop personnel, mechanics, terminal staff, company managers, dispatchers, etc. law enforcement, scale house operators, and others drivers to name a few.

Ask yourself these questions before seriously considering trucking:

>Do I mind being alone for long periods of time if solo driving?
>Am I able to put up with being in very close proximity to another person while team driving/training for up to six weeks or so?
>Am I okay with living in a small space for possibly weeks at a time?
>Am I able to sleep in a noisy, moving vehicle?
>Am I able to put up with potentially being mistreated by shippers, recievers, terminal staff or other drivers?
>Am I able to keep effective time management considering I generally have to cram a lot of non driving personal activities including sleep within a ten hour span?
>Do I like driving enough to do it for 13 hours a day?
>Am I able to stay awake and focused enough to stay safely on the roads for that long?

>Am I mechanically inclined enough to perform minor maintenance on the truck/trailer if needed?

Just some food for thought.

They're pretty safety conscientious up here in Ganada from what I have been told by former embloyees and experienced first hand as a third party contractor. When I was hauling sand, 98% of the loads we hauled were for Schlumberger.

They're pretty strict about keeping within hours of service with their company drivers, and with us contractors, they had an iPhone app we had to use to track every load of sand from pickup to dropoff.

ive seen ads on trailers looking to hire o/o's. its just that i dont want to be held responsible by a company if i do something stupid and ruin a million dollar truck. and i can have more freedom in general if i own the truck. what about the costs though? how cheap can i get a reliable truck that will last 10 years

Hi, I'm catfucker and I'm gay.

You can't get your CDL until 18 or 19.
You can't cross state lines in a commercial vehicle until 21.
Most companies won't even hire you until you're 22.
In order to become an O/O you must attain self-authority, which could cost upwards of $10k on its own, and may require prior CDL driving experience.
You can get a truck as cheap as $7k but it'll need another $15k to be bare minimum dependable and road legal.
>>
>>17791481
Steers are just considered an axle. You're not limited to 12k. You're limited to 17k or the weight rating if the equipment, which would usually come down to the tires.
Trucking schools blather on about 12k because at 80k, the only legal balance is 12/34/34.

On any load over 60k gross with full fuel my steers are over 12k, topping out at 12600.

You went too fast. It got stuck halfway on the range shift.

Do that enough and you'll demolish the one synchro your transmission has, causing horrendous grinding with every range shift.
>>
>>17797869
what is self authority?
>>
>>17797926
I've never looked it up or gotten a fleshed out answer from an O/O about it but from what I gather you can't just get your CDL, buy a truck and go to work. You have to establish 'your own authority' which is some legal fuckery in order to drive a class 8 truck (probably lower classes too) as an O/O. I've been told the costs generally start at $10k but could easily be higher for no fucking reason apparently.

>but all they have to do is tell the examiner they don't have diabetes
They're supposed to check glucose in the urine with a test strip as part of the physical so it shouldn't be quite as easy as just saying you don't have it. I know because that's how it was found I had diabeetus.

>>17794889
As long as glucose levels can be controlled with diet and medication then a driver can get a 1 year certificate. Regular certificates are 2 years btw. Insulin use is not allowed though there seems to be a push on to allow drivers that would need insulin.

Also required documentation has increased for 2017. Used to be you only needed to show you were on medication and that there was no glucose in the urine and a glucose level below 125 at the time of the physical. Now in addition you have to have a lab test within the last three months showing an A1C below 10, letter from your pcp stating you do not have diabetic neuropathy, you're stable on your medication, you haven't changed your medication recently, you're safe to operate a CMV on that medication, and also an eye test within the last year with a statement from that doctor that you don't have diabetic retinopathy.

Truckerfag has his own authority but IIRC he hasn't used it in years. I think he runs under Farm2Fleet's DOT number.

And of course EF doesn't have his own authority, that's all taken care of by his daddy like everything else in his life.

Get a load of the new guy.

Always visually inspect your 5th wheel.
Always clear your blind spot before merging.
Always murder before you rape.

Stay safe.

So that's why my stepfather asked if I had 10 grand he could borrow so many years ago.

Well obviously you need a DOT number, which if I remember correctly is free. Then you need an MC (motor carrier) number, I think around $200, give or take $50. Need to be enrolled in a random drug test pool. Need to renew UCR (unified carrier registration) every year, $70. Need a BOC3 processing agent, which I have no idea what it is but it's required. Need to register for IFTA (international fuel tax agreement) in your state, you pay that every quarter. Need insurance for liability and cargo, which is probably the 2nd highest expense. Need registration. There are a couple states that have their own mileage taxes apart from IFTA, like Kentucky, Arkansas, Oregon, and NY has like 2 separate mileage taxes. Need to file form 2290 every year, I think it's a federal heavy vehicle tax. I might be forgetting some things.
>>
>>17798227
They were supposed to get rid of MC numbers I think this year and use DOT number for everything, but of course the government can't actually make things less complicated, so they postponed doing that until all the old fucks working at the DOT can figure out how to use a computer.

>can i get a reliable truck that will last 10 years
No. You can't get a $300k truck that will last 10 years. That's not how trucks work. By the end of 10 years you'll have swapped out every part of a truck no matter what it cost. At best in a $10k truck you'll make it through the first year spending under $20k keeping it roadworthy.

>You can't get your CDL until 18 or 19.
18, some states have agricultural exemptions as low as 16.
>You can't cross state lines in a commercial vehicle until 21.
Correct.

Authority on its own is 3 figures. The biggest expense is getting an insurance binder, which for a first year O/O is a 5 figure sum.
>You can get a truck as cheap as $7k but it'll need another $15k to be bare minimum dependable and road legal.
They come even cheaper than that if you really want to burn some money.

>>17798227
I don't even remember. I set up my authority sloshed at a house party by accident.

But brokers and shippers don't even use DOT numbers. That'd make no fucking sense.
