>Driving Large Vehicles For Fun And Profit, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Personal Hygene:

Find a community college or specialist 'school' that can get you a CDL, either finance it or pay out of pocket, then get on board at a company that offers tuition reimbursement.

Stick out your two years in the meat grinder to pay your dues, then decide once you're debt free whether or not you want to stick around.

There are also companies that will train you in exchange for you signing a (typically) 2-year contract, and while these are generally regarded as a total shitfest, it's not the worst thing in the world if that is your only option.

That said, aim for a recognizable company - Swift, Prime, and Schneider all get a lot of flak for being 'puppy mill' companies, but the true shitters are companies like CR England, CRST, and a handful of others that aren't coming to mind.

Nine times out of ten, a smaller, locally-owned-and-operated 'Mom and Pop' company will be your best bet.

What a faggot you are. You're making payments on all that shit, with interest. Better yet, your daddy probably cosigned on everything or even paid for all/most of your toys.

Not that anon that you are having the dick waving contest with, but I relined all my properties sewer lines when I first buy them, any blockages are 99% resident caused.

So thats when I send out my plumber and charge the tenant for their stupidity.

Relining sewer pipes, of it hasn't already been done, is one of the first things I do on a new to me property. It pays for itself in the long run.

Well, most bodyjob driving work is vocational in nature, and generally go for longer hours than townie minimum wage jobs.

And, really, that one extra day a week beyond what you consider your maximum is a deal breaker? Two days off a week isn't enough?

>I have no idea what you just said
>Please be patient, I have autism
Fixed that for you.

The first part of ny post was an explanation that the kind of jobs that require you to have a DZ license generally require you to put in longer hours than a shitty minimum wage job flipping burgers at A&W or greeting customers at the door of the local Wal-Mart, as they don't have multiple shifts to man that equipment.

The second part of my post was alluding to the fact that the idea of working five days a week, tenish hours a day is isn't considered a long stretch by anyone on this board considering most of the guys here drive for eleven hours a day and can be out on the road for three plus weeks at a time.

If you think that 40 hours a week is the absolute limit for working, maybe you aren't cut out for this kind of industry.

#1 peeve, cars that can't merge on the fucking highway.
Traffic is not required to yield to you, get up to speed when you get on or get the fuck out of my way! I have to be in the left lane so other trucks moving faster can get around me, and 9/10 times I have traffic on my left and it's more unsafe for me to change lanes than you to time your gap in traffic and mash on it.

Why are Haitians so fucking stupid?

>get to work yesterday, clusterfuck upon clusterfuck and can't even start running my route until 10am because we have no trucks
>been getting screwed one way or another every day, lots of it stems from tryin to pick up after other drivers fucking up and tryin to help out overwhelmed boss
>dude on light duty is only one left to take these 7 pallets to airport, he can't make commission anyway so I close out the invoice and make the $$$ on that because I lost out on running my route and did a bunch of other shit to help out other drivers
>go to check that the route got closed out fine today and I would make that airport money at least, retarded driver voided out the order to adjust the shit by a couple of dollars and logged me out of the computer and closed it all out so I can't go back and do anything about it.
>texted him telling him he's a fucking idiot and just took $100 from me and threw it down the drain
>still have to talk a bunch of shit to him tomorrow

These people don't think before they act. Ever wonder why Haiti and all of Africa are such shitholes? All of thay earthquake money is better off in Hillary's pocket than with those people.
>>
>>17765577
You get a feeling for what they're gonna do before they do it. Most people telegraph what they're gonna do when they're thinking about it.
You get a sense of timing too. You get to know whether they're going fast enough to hit the gap in front of you, but they mostly target fixate on you because they're afraid of getting hit.
>>
>>17765577
Personally I stick to my lane and current speed and don't budge an inch. The only time I'll change lanes is when there's absolutely nothing in the left lane, and I'll only slow down if it's another truck coming down the ramp and there's little/no merge area. If it's a car/bike/pickup or whatever else, fuck'em, they can speed up or hit the brakes, it's their call.
>>17765579
In every state, unless I'm mistaken. In Germany, the autobahn at least, it's the other way around - highway traffic yields to merging traffic. Apparently this is safer and results in fewer accidents, but I wonder what effect it has on traffic.
>>17765595
Fuck'em. I let them decide. Only twice have I seen drivers dumb enough to match speed and drive on the shoulder.

Fuck that for cars. Let them get rekt. Watching retards freak out when their lane is ending and they're on the side of my trailer is a hobby of mine.

There's a couple of on ramps on Southbound I-95 right in Ft Lauderdale where I have so many funny close calls. The lane ends kinda quick and there isn't much of a shoulder, just a cement barrier. There's no excuse for cars to not time it right tho, it's a downhill ramp so they have a few hundred yards to speed up and can easily see the traffic they have to merge with. But it's always the same shit, these people don't even look to their left until the lane is ending and that's when there is a trailer on the side of them and they have to slam on the brakes.

>>17765632
So stupid. And dude has been with the company for years and knew exactly how it was supposed to work. I even loaded the fucking truck for him.

Keks I ain't flatbedding any more, Roehl would only pay a pittance for tarping and they required it on 99/100 loads so I quit. That said, I'm a scrawny fucker, so while small tarps were no issue at all, the larger 'lumber' tarps were a real task. Alcoa in Tennessee wouldn't even put one on top of the coil with the forklift for you, so I had to ask someone to lend me a hand, since Roehl still uses ancient 200+ pound lumber tarps.

why is the distance between the two axles of your trailer so big?
wouldn't that only cause extra wear when making turns? (asuming they are unsteered)
>>
>>17766788
Hey man, you gotta respect somebody who made $7.3B last year while only working 6hrs a week.

>>17767238
Indeed it does. The tires on that forward axle are often rounded at the edges from being dragged when turning. The advantage to spread axle layout though is the max load limit is raised to 20k per axle instead of 17k, and if you center the load weight on the trailer, it should never be overweight - no adjustment needed.

In burgerland you get roughly an extra 1000lbs per axle for every foot farther apart they are, up until 10 feet, where they're considered single axles, rather than a tandem axle, and you get the full axle weight limit rather than having the axle group knocked down to 34k like a standard tandem group.

Yeah, there's a bit of extra tire scrub, but using tall, thick sidewalled steer tires like I do helps reduce uneven wear. Of greater concern with inexperienced drivers is that they can actually snap frame crossmembers forcing a trailer to turn tighter than the tires want to.

This can be alleviated with a dump axle setup, but it'll overload an axle when loaded. If this trailer were new enough when I got it I would have installed a front lift axle for mpgs and maneuverability when light.

>>17767860
Look, there are almost no 4 day weeks in cdl trucking. "Cushy" jobs get you home every night and are 5 days a week. I run team, so I'm out 5 and off 2. But that's with experience.

There are OTR guys that don't get home for 4-6 weeks. That's likely where you will start as most local companies don't hire out of school.

Even swift wants you to have 6 months of clean driving with them before they'll put you on dedicated/regional.

50-60 hrs driving and maybe 70 on duty are in your future here.
That's paying your dues in this industry.
>>
>>17767860
Beyond that, if money is your primary concern....look at specialisation. Flatdeck and heavy haul make the best money OTR followed closely by reefer, but tanker and doubles have more jobs that get you home every day. As a solo it's good that you have delivery experience because some of the best paid guys I know that get home every day do food service routes, think Sysco or US foods. I hear local tanker guys make good money but I don't know much about it.

Basically what TF said. Any mega is going to have you at about 30k (give or take) this business isn't guaranteed, could be 37 or 27 depending on how well you learn the system and work within it.

>min wage?
Depends. You make money by managing your time wisely and keeping the left door shit (within reason). Some things are out of your control, control all that you can.
You get paid per mile, so the less time you spend having to fuck around at receivers, shippers, and downtime between loads, the more you make "per hour".

Also depends on how you measure it, are we measuring the time you're on duty, and time you're driving? (I do) or are you using some moronic metric like total time spent away from home? (I've heard this before) if you use the latter, you will always view your pay as Chinese wages. If the former, then you start to figure out how to streamline your time.

As it stands right now, I figure I drive an average of 9 hrs a day, I'm on duty another hour (rough average). So work that into my gross i make about $27/hr.

$30k seems pretty low, doesn't it? I worked at Werner which is about as bad as it gets and I got about $41k my first year. Unless you're accounting for taxes and insurance then maybe $30k isn't too far off.
>>
>>17769546
It may be low, but if we tell you an average, or anyone else and they make more.....theyre happy and they've achieved something. If we tell you more and you make less, then you will either feel ripped off, or feel like shit.
>>
>>17767955
Tbh doing what he does for 40 hours a week is probably far more taxing than sitting in a truck doing nothing for 70 hours like most company cucks.
>>
>>17769559
Isn't it just as detrimental to discourage people with absolute worst case scenarios?
>>
>>17769617
Well an average is just an average. Some drivers are unmotivated, won't do this and won't go here, so they make 25k a year and sit at the terminal complaining all the time.

Some drivers are motivated, stay on top of their dispatcher/DM/whateverthefuck and minimize their downtime, learn to work the clock, get loads tcalled if they can when they have excess time on them and stay rolling, etc etc etc. They will make 40k+ depending on the company, pay, truck shop time, and a million other factors. It's a long conversation to have.

Well they pay by the mile, but when 8hrs of your 14hr clock is spent dealing with bullshit at a shipper or receiver, there's not much time to cover those miles.

$30k the first 12mos might be reasonable considering a couple months of training pay and then another few months getting shitty routes and figuring everything out. But even mega companies, you should be at least making $40k-$50k by the second year if you aren't constantly getting screwed.

Also hometime factors into it. If you take all of the hometime you're allowed, you will be wasting a lot of days fucking around with loads to get you to and from your home. Taking a weekend off every two weeks instead of staying out for 6mos at a time could be the difference between $40k and $60k

Is that the same Southeastern with the red trucks? I always wondered about them and other companies with lots of daycabs like Averitt. I heard Old Dominion isn't bad either.

We have another company like that called Wilson with these green tractors. All their trucks are super shitty tho so idk if it would be worth a damn.

Is engine braking better than regular braking when hauling a load twice as heavy as your powerhorse?
>>
>>17773726

Depends on a few things, the grade you are going down (or up on) and if you own the truck or pay for the new brakes

I lease, which means I pay for the brakes, down hills loaded I like to ride them down in 8th gear at 1700 or 1800rpm with the jake on, if I don't have to touch my brakes, cool, but if the jake fails I'm going slow enough to not cook my brakes on the descent.

The weight of the truck is not the deciding factor, the weight of the load and your gross weight, coupled with the rate of descent or deceleration decide whether you engine brake, service brake or both, I've gotten to the point to where I can jake all the way down to 5th gear before I apply service brakes.
>>
>>17772000
Aussies don't need to sleep though, if they fall asleep and veer off the road they'll just continue driving through 8 hours of outback until they wake up with minor dings on their trucks from bushes and Abbos.

>>17772271

>>17772376

>>17772530
Well, MAALT has garbage reviews and I'm not too sure about Steven's. If there are any for sure good companies in the oilfields I'll be there. Odessa would be best since I have a friend that lives there.

>>17772865
If they pay well and their home time isn't absolute shit. Plus what are the governors set at? 64? Nanny cams?
>>
>>17773738

65 lease and O/O 62 company

No nanny cams, you do have Bendix and Meritor though which is kinda cool in low visibility situations. Coast over 77mph for less than 30 sec., you're okay.

Hometime for lease is unlimited but that truck payment hits whether you drive or not, company drivers get good hometime too.

Prime starts their greenhorn rookies higher than most bottom feeder companies cap their company drivers.
>>
>>17773737
I should clarify. I'm using a small pickup to tow a load that is as heavy as I am.

Say I'm going down a 30 degree and I have a 5 speed and need to brake from going 60 to 0. How likely is a fishtail if I just slam on the brakes and shouldn't engine braking just provide reverse thrust and push the trailer back (instead of a rapid deceleration?)

Pls be patient, I am new. I always thoguht that clunk sounds came from a sudden brake causing the trailer to bounce up and down and swing side to side.
>>
>>17773767
Downshift before you hit the hill. Light steady pressure on the brakes, downshift when revs drop, reverse thrust??? Lol Not really sure what your question is desu
>>
>>17773763
Idk man, I don't really want a mega. I'd rather go with a smaller company that pays a bit better. New Sound is offer 41cpm, Kold was offering 40cpm both hauling reefer.
>>
>>17773893

Dude, Prime starts their noobs who haven't driven anything bigger than a Prius out at .44cpm, .49cpm if you go with a lightweight.

I'd bet the farm our Millennium terminal in Springfield blows the doors off of New Sound or Kold. We have a movie theater, basketball court and gym, Northstar Grille even the Springfield cops come in for lunch, we have laundry, 12 bunks, showers, nature trail, they have an in-house barber, Springfield has a ton of shit to do nearby most drivers call it the black hole because of all the stuff to do here and how hard it is to leave, we have caves pic related I shot that and it's 12 miles away, we have long-term vehicle storage and our CEO is 66 and can probably outrun you on the basketball court.

Now I know some of you faggots are going to harp on me for shilling Prime but I've been here 2 years I would have left by now if I didn't like them. I have the credentials and experience to go home and get a local job that pays as well.

Seriously, call a recruiter and come on over. We have guys that get their license at bottom feeder companies and then come to Prime after their contract is up. We also have a Texas regional account that pays pretty decently and several other regional accounts as long as you don't live in Florida or some fucked up ass place. DOT usually leaves you alone because they know your equipment is up to snuff and if you pass Level 1 it's like 100 bucks for lease or O/O and 25 for company drivers that Prime pays you.

Get your shit together and come get this guap

I'm like "Man, you know it's all the same shit and when you want the comfy local gig, they will take the guy who stayed with Cheney Bros for 2 years over the guy who worked for 6 different companies in that same time."

That shit almost looks as bad as long employment gaps on the resumé. And if you put in some time at a shitty or mediocre company, the good companies know that you will stay with them for years if you tolerated that other BS for so long.

Me neither. If they paid something good like $120k-$150k, I would consider doing it for a few years. But to make $40k-$60k, I would rather take a local job making $30k. And a local job making $50k+ and only working 40-45 hours a week, hell yes I will take that over living in the cuckshed.

If I was 23 and a NEET and about to get cut off from my tendies from mom, I guess OTR wouldn't be so bad because you can still play videogames and have more money for action figures and don't have to worry about any real bills.

Sucks for Whiney tho. He needs to just find a straight regional position where he's only sleeping on the road a night or two a week since he says all the local gigs are like $10-$15/hr. Seems like enough shit runs thru Texas to find something decent. Or he could stop doing retarded math and find a place that pays local drivers $17/hr, but has benefits and guarantees 50hrs a week. Being local and working 50-60 hours holding a steering wheel would net some decent OT pay and you still get to sleep at home.

No shit? I've heard trans am doesn't even do background checks. My problem with otr is I would have to start off at the bottom payscale because I've been local only and I have a major problem with that. And I'm afraid only shitty companies would hire me, so I never tried. Had 2 jobs in 12 years, and only bcuz my boss retired.
>>
>>17774285
The pay scale is pretty close for all newer guys. It's like that for us too, the dudes who have been around for awhile are still making the same salary and commission per case as newer guys, but we get better routes and can get 600 cases off in 9hrs while new guys are working 12hrs+ to get 350cs off the truck.

So just pick something with halfway decent reviews and then put in your time until you figure out the system and can run 3000mi a week while other dudes are struggling to hit 2000mi.

Only local place that would pay around $17/hr. here are Western Refinery, USPS, UPS, or FedEx but they're all super fucking difficult to get into since everyone is actively seeking more than a $12/hr. CDL job. And yeah, enough shit runs through Texas but all that freight comes up from Mexico to the Midwest. Anything local here is done by first generation immigrants who almost shit their pants when they see $7.25/hr. jobs and gladly work any job for that. So any job not requiring a degree here pays as such.

Border towns to Mexico will always be shit holes because of this. Look to Laredo, to Nogales, to Yuma. If most industry was American based, these cities probably wouldn't exist since they're just intermediaries for raw goods to go down and complete goods to come up (i.e. Kenworth)

It's not too bad, quality's decent and the customisation isn't too bad.

Wouldn't pay money for it personally, but that's more out of principle desu.

So, have there been any new accidents since I stopped following these threads?

Last I heard, Whiney-Kun ran into the back of some car and M&M got fired after taking out a utility pole.

>tfw a roughly 10 000$ hydraulic torque wrench fell out of my cabinets once, and someone drove it over

I couldn't believe I wasn't piss tested, I got lucky and reported the a loose latch a couple weeks ago and they didn't fix it so it was all good.

>even though it was 100% my fault for not double checking it actually closed right or putting in the safety pin

Lucky ducky. When I was coil tubing our cross shift left our hydraulic setup outside in the rain, and no one noticed it for almost a whole shift. Our field supervisor was fucking pissed.

What were you doing for work that you needed a hydraulic torque wrench? Well control?

A handful. It's always at like 5:30am too when somebody swaps tractors around and dudes go to pull out of their spots only to find out it wasn't locked.

But they just go grab two forklifts. It's loud as fuck and wakes you up real quick, but not the end of the world.

EF bulldozed his cuckshed when returning home after driving for 33 straight hours

Bepis killed an entire Haitian family when he plowed into the back of their 1990 Toyota pickup - all 19 of them

Optimus Primefag re-read his lease agreement, did the math right this time, and promptly drove off a bridge, committing sudoku

TF swerved into a toll booth in Chicago while getting road head from ZF, he then paid her approximately 1.65 billion dollars to repair his Columbia

Whiney wrecked his Toyobaru while whispering sweet nothings to his dakimakura in the passenger seat

Oilfag fired up his heater truck and it exploded, but he lived long enough to shitpost about it one last time before succumbing to the full-body 3rd degree burns

What? I didn't wreck my FR-S. Timing chain broke and since it's an interference engine it destroyed the right half of the block. So I warranty repaired it and sold it.

Keks I was just shitposting. I had even forgotten your Toyobaru grenaded itself.

>>17778581
