If you have a 1967-2012 ford and want to know what you're vehicle was from factory here is a resource I found : http://www.martiauto.com/martireports.cfm
I'll be getting this for my truck when I have some cash saved up. These people are licensed by Ford so all info provided is official.

Good news is i got the camaro back together and it no longer leaks oil! (Still burns some but im picking my battles).

....but now the new water pump is puking water out of the left gasket... i threw in the towel and took it to a shop for them to deal with it (and to check my work while they have everything pulled off again).

I told my coworker to check the oil while i filled it up... he proceeded to rip the stick tube from the block... stuck it back in with a healthy glob of permatex and hope it doesnt cause any problems.

Part of me never wants to deal with this PoS again... the other part wants to keep it out of pure stubborness and spite.

Welcome to the world of classic car ownership.
>>
>>17763770
Right? In 6 months im on my 3rd! The best one was a crusty 4 door dart. Fixed the master cylinder and never had a problem with it. Shouldve just kept that one.
>>
>>17763769
Softly screaming.
>>
>>17763769
I opened my trunk after a week of opening my car. Got a spare front tire (no rim), 6 floor mats (none match) and a starting pistol... not sure why that was there.
>>
Other thing that made me fed up.
>new water pump was too thick for the power steering pump bracket, spent an hour filing it down while in the engine bay.
>went to adjust idle bracket on carb, immediately lost the little pin. Tried using a staple and a paper clip (they didnt work), found a piece of metal that would fix it then immediately dropped it and lost it. Finally got a rubber gromet on it that seems to be doing the trick. Got my lope back.
>still burning oil, decided to take it as a part of life and hope its not a crazy amount.
>every time i dropped a tool, had to climb under the lift. Always just out of reach.
>>
>>17763792
A starting pistol? Hahaha. Did the fellow you buy it from seem like a racer or something? I know years ago that mailmen used to carry cap pistols to scare off dogs.

It reminds me of Driver's car, which was a 1973.

1973 seems right. I got the VIN and it has a 3 in it which matches the year.

Im at ATC Mobile Alabama. Its a 1975 body with god knows what drive train.

What cutter and where?
What rate do you wanna go/did go?
Post pics and all if you get the firebird..im gonna take a guess, you just got out of basic/a-school, and youre spending your signing bonus on a toy?
>>
>>17763766
You probably fudged some of the RTV during the process of shoving that bastard timing cover between the block and oil pan. The old school water pump design is kind of fucky, sandwiching the cover between the block and water pump. That shit really annoys me.
>>
>>17763490
Okay, new question. Did Ford make Ranger XLT Explorers? Or was it Custom, Ranger, Ranger Explorer, and Ranger XLT. I've looked everywhere but still haven't found an answer.

CGC Decisive, Pascagoula Mississippi

No firm decision yet, mostly looking at AMT and SK

Graduated basic on Friday with Tango-194, and yeah pretty much

Pic related is prospective firebird

Mind if I ask your rate/rank?
I forgot to in my last post

The car looks nice. But if youre looking at doing that (i was gonna get a 66 el camino, but it sold before i got out), i suggest waiting till you get here. Cars in gulfport/mobile are cheap and plentiful, plus there is a classic car dealer in gulfshores that has some very nice stuff.

SK is really easy from what i see, but AMT is also a good rate. Go AMT if you hate cutter life, never have to see it again.

Ive had a few friends on the decisive, seems like a decent ship.

I was X-Ray 193, who were your CCs?
Im going MST, so ill be at the "non-rate" resort for 2 years it seems.

Yeah, I know. The water passage runs through the timing cover, you know that, right? Not only do you have rtv the oil sealing portion, you have to rtv the two coolant jackets on the timing cover as well, both sides. That's why I say the old school design is fucky, there's literally four fucking layers of gasket just for a damn water pump.

Well, i had a pretty bad go at it (fell down stairs, getting fucked on the run, etc). But i was so hopped up on pain killers, it barely effected me. I couldve gone RHE (basically you do nothing, but stay at basic till youre healed up and then continue training) but im from an island in Texas, and the average temp at the time was just above 20... so i wasnt gonna stay. Everyone knows basic training is difficult, but nobody ever mentions the injuries.

Don't just replace it, take it apart and clean it all, make sure everything is contacting.
I did that on my 68 Continental, the Dashlights did not work at all.
I took it apart, cleaned all of the contacts and put a dab of solder onto the little arm that touches the rheostat for the dash light dimness and now they work. Or at least they did last time I worked on it
>>
>>17766410
I disconnected it before sending the car to paint, lights worked but dimmer was bad, now putting everything back together all im getting from it are the headlights, no tail, brake, instrument, dome

you ever get tired of your lincoln Drac? I feel like I'm chasing my tail with mine. I recently replaced the dizzy, got it to run but it ran like utter shit. Thought I might have put the rotor in the wrong spot so took it out and moved it a tooth, now it won't fire at all... I get spark from the coil to the distributor, but nothing to the plugs. My mechanic is stumped too. Ignition coil is new and was working before. Returned the new dizzy, got a replacement, same shit. This all because I was trying to solve that stumble/misfire, and thought it might be the ignition module. TPS is new as well. I thought about putting in the old coil and see if that works, maybe the new high-output model is burning out the new distributors...

All this plus the fact random vacuum lines and electronics seem to go out on a weekly basis, I'm getting frustrated... all that's keeping me interested is that luscious ride and those cheap and readily available ferd parts

>tfw didn't sleep

I'm putting AC on my truck soon, extra load on the motor is going to kill drivability unless I make an upgrade. Truck came new with a horribly parasitic direct drive fan with no shroud. Cheapo electric fan is $114, cheap thermal clutch+mechanical fan+universal shroud = $98. Electric fan is likely to draw 25ish amps at full speed, my ancient alternator puts out 40 or so. Clutch fan won't draw amps obvs but it will only save about half as much power as the electric fan, and it's way bulkier than electric. But there's no wiring involved...

>>17767366
I wouldn't cheat, if for nothing else I would just feel horrible about it. But damn, I'm not gonna stop myself from looking. They're putting something in water these day (or maybe the cornbread and sweet tea)

carb rebuild, fuel system cleanup, new fuel pump.

Change the oil and antifreeze. (Change the oil again after it's run for a bit, like 500 miles or less)

Inspect the wiring for rodent adventures.

That's about it.
>>
>>17769622
This. Don't even try it without replacing the fuel pump. It has gotten me multiple times. Also, it will be a good idea to drain and inspect the fuel tank, make sure it isn't rusted through. Also ensure the heater core and radiator haven't rusted through.

I'll keep that in mind when i pull out a plugs tomorrow, Haven't had a signal stalling issue since the new plugs, hell I haven't even needed to use the choke when starting, just 2 pumps of gas, and slight pushing on the gas and she kicks into life no issue, its been pretty much night and day difference. Also the heat never goes past half temp after the thermostat/thermostat housing change, which is another big win.

Another thing ever since putting the lucus transmission fix, my amount of transmission fluid loss is nearly gone. Still loses some buts nothing compared to before. I was and still am fairly worried about the long term on that stuff though. Hopefully it all works out fine.

Sounds like It's running like a top. I'd get another person's opinion on the plug, but I think it's safe to ride for now. Yeesh. Wood grain, faux or genuine is pretty difficult to restore by yourself. I've gotten pretty good at recovering simple items like door panels, dash pads, and the like, but wood grain is out of my expertise. Might try getting a light brown spray paint, and doing a respray of just that top section of the door panel where its faded. You'll have to remove it and tape it off. Or touch up paint. It's going to be pretty difficult to make it look factory again.

Might try searching online though, sometimes you can get a faux stick on wood grain film to cover it.

If it were real, I could give you all the advice you need. For fake, get yourself a vinyl applique, take the piece off, pull any Chrome or extra bits off of it, stick the appliqued to it, replace the trim bits you pulled off, and put it back together. That's about as good as it gets.

Grab a radioshack brand FM modulator (not a transmitter, those are fucking ass), it plugs in to your antenna cable and splits it into two signals, the regular FM channels and an RCA input at a designated frequency (usually whatever frequency doesn't pick up anything in your area). It's like you don't even car.

But seriously, get an ammeter out and check between the battery post and the clamp. If there is a leak, it'll show up there. Then start pulling fuses.
Put the ammeter across the empty fuseholders and find out what circuit that current leak is on.
If there is a leak. Might be a poopy alternator or voltage regulator.

It's an '89. Posted it a couple times before, but I mostly lurk. The engine needs to be rebuilt, so what I'm going to wind up doing is hitting a JY and pulling a 5.0 block from an Explorer or something with low miles (hopefully) and also snag the GT40P heads while I'm in there. Then clean it up, put some nice parts in it, and slowly build the thing in my garage until this one gives out. Main bearings are shot, and I have almost 0 hot idle oil pressure.

Here's a thing I'm not sure of, though in case anybody is feeling helpful: Pitman arm seal on the steering box is leaking. Needs some stop leak since I don't plan on rebuilding the damn thing just yet because this is my daily. PS fluid is also overdue for a full replacement. Stop leak, and then drain and flush, or drain and flush and then stop leak? I doubt there's really any difference in it, except that doing the drain and flush before putting stop leak means I have the stop leak in my system in case another leak pops up. Still, I'd rather ask 1000 stupid questions than make 1 stupid mistake.
>>
>>17779155
Addendum, I suppose: Does anybody happen to know what the deal is with the paint on the '89s? I've read the last gen Broncos have single-stage paint, where the "clear" and "color" are mixed, but I can't find a whole lot on the 4th gen. Is there a clearcoat, or is it the same single-stage deal? I want to wet sand, polish, and wax and get my bby looking nice and shiny again.

>>17779155
Right, I remember. My main bearings are similarly shot. I did the rear main seal and confirmed this.

Those pitman arm seals are easy to do, you don't have to tear it apart completely to replace it. Just pull the snap ring for the gearbox seal out, start the engine and turn the steering wheel over to full lock, and it will blow the seal out. I did the stop leak on my 94 Bronco, it didn't help it all. Just do the seal that method, you won't have to pull the box apart.

>>
>>17779420
Fuckin' hell. If it's that easy, I may wind up doing it the 'right way' after all. That said, yeah. I confirmed the main bearings when I was doing the oil pump. I was *hoping* that replacing the pump and cleaning the pick-up would buy me a few PSI, but alas. I pulled the further main cap from the pump and it was all scored to fuck copper with a mark ground 'round the crank. Still, at least I confirmed my initial diagnosis. As much as it sucks being right, there's still a small joy knowing that I do actually have some idea what I'm doing.

>>
>>17779524
Honestly, as long as it isn't making noise it'll run for a long time to come. I'm not too concerned about mine. I put some of that engine restore additive in my oil, lots of people swear by it. Maybe it will at least stabilize the wear.

As far as the seal goes, here's the full procedure:
>leave wheels seated on ground
>remove pitman arm nut and use a small pitmam arm puller like pic related to bust the pitman arm off of gearbox shaft, leave the tie rod links bolted to the pitman arm
>remove snap ring
>loosely put pitman arm and nut back on gearbox shaft just enough to hold it on
>start up engine, full lock steering, blow seal out
>remove pitman arm
>replace seal, its a two piece seal, ensure you get the first piece seated all the way before installing the second, then install snap ring
>reinstall pitman arm

I'm sure you didn't need a full play by play, but I wanted to be as clear as possible. That's exactly how I did the one on my 94 Bronco.

I'm not liking the way the panels don't fit anymore and in a manner that suggests the frame is twisted. Look at the pics that show the left side and how the door, hood, frame cover plate down at the bottom are all kinds of fucked up. Also when the headlight doors don't fit anymore that's a serious problem with the pivots, usually from rust, and it isn't an easy fix.

I'm thinking it's a parts car now and way too expensive for that imo.

>>17780065
Thanks breh, I'm fine. Don't believe I was all that close to death, but I appreciate it.

>>17780141
That's very fixable. There's lots of different methods, some better than others. All of which involve removing the dash. You'll have to grind into the crack, and sand it down to bevel the edges flat, then use padded dash filler or bondo to fill in the crack. Sand that flat, and then you may want to go over it with some kind of resin to strengthen it. Then re-finish somehow with paint or some other method.

There's tons of online tutorials, but you have to sift through the bs.

why did lincoln not put any offset on the rear wheels of these panther cars? They stock wheel placement looks so bad. I got some spidertrax wheel spacers for mine, made for a jeep, at least it's a real brand so I know they're not made of chinesium and going to explode on the highway

Kind of wanted wire wheels, but then I realized, I could spend 500-800 on that, and not increase the value of the car, or get my buddy to fix the body damage for 800 or so, and maybe increase the value by that same amount
>>
>>17780202

>>17780204
60%? Nah, good luck on that. Maybe if they are expensive, beefy offroad tires.

>the parts were shared across platforms
This I understand, it's more the fact that they probably could have put an additional 1.5" of offset on the rear wheels, slightly impractical, but at least it would have improved the look of the extra wide body on the relatively narrow Panther chassis, imo. It's especially noticeable looking from the front at an angle, doesn't sit quite right to me

that turned out pretty good. after the bonded leather bullshit I bought some vinyl, but it had a fabric backing to it. It didn't come out too good either. I already pulled the vinyl off, I plan on just bondoing over the entire thing, sanding it down and then painting it.

>>17781117
bonded leather is actually only really around 10% leather scraps that have been ground up and glued onto a fabric backing. I didn't know this when i bought it, so I was wondering why the hell this stuff wasn't stretching at all to conform to the dash pad.

ever see an old "leather" couch that has the leather peeling away to reveal a fine cloth mesh underneath? Yeah, that's bonded leather. It's really shit. The only reason they use 10% ground up leather scraps is so they can call it """"leather"""""" and mark the price up on it. Apparently there's a big ethics debate over calling it leather in industry.

>>
>>17781163
Just a word of advice about that bondo, if you're not an expert body man it will be nigh impossible to sand it straight so it will look good when its done. I just bondo'd mine to hold the old shitty foam together and keep it from falling apart.

I have a few block sanders and stuff at my disposal, if it doesn't come out right, fuck it. I can just sand it down and try again.

But I also have been looking up dash pad covers, which aren't bad for my galaxie... $120.

but all this is so far off, first i gotta fix the rust holes on the body, strip the paint, paint it red, reinstall the engine, transmission, put the carpet in, install the headliner, clean up the homemade wiring harness, find a new windshield, install a new windshield, put new weather stripping on the entire car, ...there's a few other things I'm forgetting I'm sure.

The secret to good MPGs out of a '70s barge is a complete MPG tune; hotter coil, but narrow plug gaps; catless exhaust, large tires, feathering it off the line, coasting whenever possible, avoiding the A.C., and using premium nonreformulated gasoline whenever possible.

should I get a 76 f150 4x4 that needs like 800 in sheet metal but is apparently a daily for 2800?

I am a little hesitant about this engine though... so much on it... but ac would be awesome here in alabama.

Avoid. That thing will not go down the highway with those tires, probably didn't regear it, and the suspension will constantly be falling apart from all the stress.

I warned you.

the sheet would be pretty fuckin expensive from lmcuck but I think I could maybe hammer some of it out
I know fuck all about older fords, I did my research on squarebodies but those were rarer than projected so I may end up with a ford

Yeah no, looking like that it's not worth that much.
Not to mention these things are notorious for rust and he mentions nothing.
The only thing it's got going for it is that it's standard and 4x4
>>
>>17786146
thanks dude. I've been hurting for a work truck so anything fullsize, pre-83 (inspect cutoff) and 4x4 makes the list.
fords are fucking retard cheap here too.
>>
>>17786127
Well youre in new mexico... doubt it has rust. You can buy used fenders for pretry cheap to fix it. But that ash tray... oh god.

2k, max. And thats if it runs great and has no rust.
>>
>>17786249
yeah, that rigs gonna need a deep fucking cleaning to make it tolerable, but it seems alright.
I'm somewhat concerned about the fuckedupness of the rad/engine bay given that front end damage though.

that doesn't seem too too bad, my brother drove his caprice home and then over to my place like this so i could fix it.

it looks like it just needs a new front grille, possibly a radiator support. doesn't look like anything structural like the frame.

Replacing a rad support seems like a big job, but it's something I was able to do in about 2 days.
>>
>>17786288
yeah, I hear you. to me it doesn't necessarily NEED a new grille, chicken wire and zipties work for me. I just want to make sure all the metal is decent so it could be functional even if it looked like shit.
I gotta do some pondering on checking it out but I wouldn't take it home for more than 2500. at 2k I'll have to put a grand in it to get it right anyway.

So I tried tuning my carb by ear and at first it sounded ok but now it sounds weak as hell, like it's on the verge of stalling. Anyone got advice?

screw the idle mixture screw(s) in all the way to finger tight, then back them off 2½ turns, that's the universal ballpark for carbs.

after that adjust the idle screw on the linkage to find your desired idle RPM.

You should pick up a vacuum gauge, they're fairly cheap and help out diagnosing a ton of different issues.
>>
>>17786263
Hell, there is so much room in those things, i almost gurantee thats just cosmetic
>>
>>17786396
That's what I did but then I turned the mixture screws to make the rpms go up as far as they could and then turned the idle screw to get a decent idle. Should I just leave it at 2 1/2 then?
>>
>>17786422
yeah, I'm not 100% certain on this but you're supposed to leave the mixture screws in the ballpark and set the idle with the linkage screw when tuning by ear.

With a vacuum gauge you're supposed to adjust the mixture screws to the highest vacuum at your desired RPM. since the RPM will rise or fall with those screws there's alot of 'hunting' you do to find the best possible tune

Ok; then, where did I go wrong?

>>17784967
To me, it's one of the best cars ever made; the mechanicals are all solid and easy to work on, wear components (brakes, gaskets, etc.) are dirt cheap and plentiful, it's got a Ford 9" disc rear and front disc brakes, I've got it tuned for better than brotruck MPG, it's comfortable, fully-loaded, and distinct.

However, from a personal perspective, it's better than the '59 Cadillac I had because it knows how to make you feel behind the wheel. You look for miles across that massive hood that has lines blatantly stolen from a Rolls Royce like a king surveying his kingdom. The Lincoln hood ornament is slightly reminiscent of crosshairs for the unworthy as you exert your dominance over the road.

Should you desire to avert your eyes from this sight, your gauges are elegant and easy to read; adorned with the Lincoln crest and your clock is a Cartier with Roman Numerals that's as large as the speedometer because you're an important man who has to get where he's going in style and on his time.

I love how every instrument cluster from the Ford malaise era is generic parts bin, just dressed a little differently.

Initially, that was a turn-off for me and kept me away from these cars for a number of years; but I've since learned that it aids tremendously in the restoration of these vehicles. Parts like switches and printed circuits interchange and are readily available. It makes using one as a daily driver so much easier.
>>
>>17786733
Call it fedora-tier if you will, but, I have the experience of owning enough diverse vehicles that I can make such statements.

Think im gonna trade for the olds 98. Talked to the guy, he seemed autistic about his cars (like very mad about not having the right wheels) and is desperate to have a camaro again, enough to take a hit on this car. Gonna drive down to pensacola beach to meet him.

Only think im worried about is i havent gone faster than 50-60mph since i fixed the timing chain seal, so hope it doesnt blow on I-10. Also curious about my mpg.

Guy said he gets 18-24 on the 98, so that would be a nice change. A/c, decent paint and interior, and only rust is in the trunk pan.

>>17786811
More details and photos of the 98?

The transmission in the 61-64 Olds are terrible. The roto-hydramatic is probably one of the worst transmissions GM used
