Then why does /dbt/ shit on detuned bikes
>>
Starter motor problems guy here.

I took apart my starter motor and two little pieces of plastic fell out from the bottom of it that broke off of it. I don't know what anything in there is called, but I can post a picture of it, but I feel like that doesn't matter since I can confirm that something in it is broken. So I'm guessing I was right about my starter motor being fucked.

Where can I buy a new one? The cheapest place I've found so far is amazon
>>
>>17761866
Because some top end is still desirable and detuned bikes have less of everything and race-losing pigfat and floppy chassis/suspensions
>>
>>17761819
Till you factor in trying to get knee down in a city is an awful idea. Pot holes, Police and Pedestrians.

You'll definitely be good at braking hard and clutch control. You're not going to really learn how to take a good "racing" line though.
>>
>>17761879
That is not at all a necessary skill to have though
>>
>>17761871
I bought mine off ebay, but it was for an old obscure bike, so that was all I could find.
If your bike is common you should be able to find one at whatever website supports your bike.
I get parts from multiple sources that specialize in certain manufactures. Look on forums for your bike.
Or go the ebay/amazon route.
I got one from ebay that sucked, while another works fine.
>>
>>17761879
>tfw friend got a 65 over dragging knee on the citys only curvy road at 3am

I still have no idea why he stopped. Even if they got the plate, worst case scenario would have been a 1000$ registered owner ticket. (No demerits if they canr prove who was riding)
>>
>>17761902
Was the one from ebay that sucked new or used? The cheapest I can find is on ebay. Everything else is about $100 more expensive. It says it's new and has the right part number and they offer free returns though
>>
>>17761906
>hey you, stop enjoying yourself at no cost to others.
Cops should give coupons for the HIDEOUSLY FUCKING EXPENSIVE track days you get in the US instead of tickets, honestly.

Or track operators should lower prices. It's bad enough that the pavement on any track not actually used for motorsport is garbage (and even then, some popular tracks like the burgerring have bumps in corners that fuck with bikes). You have to pay like $300 just for a total hour or two of riding and 5 hours of sitting in the sun. The best part being that your average track might have five corners and will definitely have a huge straight because the track is mostly used as a drag strip.

The connector had what looked like glue at the base. After putting it on and taking it off like 3 times the positive end would wiggle back and forth. I then ran a test on it and it wouldn't spin. It was shit, luckily on my escapade I found that the relay was the failed part, and could use my old starter.

That starter looks pretty good to me. Not underpriced, free returns and its for a common bike.

once you're going 60 you're 3/4s of the way to redline. highways speeds are normally clsoer to 75-80. your engine lacks the power to pass. corollas are faster. you are condemned the the clusterfuck of the slow lane/merging lane and probably going to die because you can't be statistically safer and go 5mph faster than traffic.

Out of curiosity, what kind of symptoms was your motorcycle showing when you got a new starter? How'd you find out that it was the relay?
>>
>>17762025
Thats why you don't get it for 60+mph. For a short stint in the right hand lane on the freeway it would be fine. It may lack the power, but he can rev the shit out of it all the time. I can't row through the gears with a 90+hp bike and not be worried about a ticket.
I commuted on a scooter for 2yrs under 60mph. It was great.

>>
>>17762040
I was having problems tuning a carb that had a cv carb that had the slide break apart.
After getting a new slide I cleaned the carb, then ended up starting a fuck ton to get it to run right after some tuning.
Then it wouldn't want to start. So I went through the power lines and found they were fine, pulled the starter and verified it worked. Before this the bike was starting fine, then it would just go click, I think I ran a multimeter on it and didn't get any hard evidence so I just said fuck it. Then bought a relay, slapped it in, and it started fine.
I am currently trying to tune this carb, but shit has been getting out of hand.
The good news is I learned a lot, and it was on a shitbike anyways.
>>
>>17762028
Depends on your ergonomics really.
And the tiger is a completely different bike from the XSR and Streety.
Manlet = Street Triple
Regular = XSR 900
Lanklet = Tiger
>>

>>
>>17762058
I mean the only shitty part is starts to get annoying sometimes, but how is it a weak justification.
I don't enjoy a heavy ass bike with "sit up and beg" positioning that has loads of power. A non heavy bike is probably fun though.
>>
>>17762081

>>
>>17762086
Get a turbo busa and do it yourself
>>
>>17762082
You want a track toy but you want to ride it on public roads. That's dumb.

The most popular road bike (a harley) isn't a top speed sports monster either, I mean cruisers top out at around the same spot as most family cars, but it does have a fuckload of torque and acceleration 300s and 250s lack because

>muh shiftan gears
>it's a sportbike i swears
>i know how 2 ride lol
>>
>>17762065
Sounds kinda similar to what's happening with mine. Starting it only makes the relay click, too. I tried jumping the battery directly to the starter motor though and it wouldn't move. I also checked to see if the battery was making it to the starter while it was on the bike by using a multimeter on the negative end of the battery and the positive end of the starter and it was definitely picking up voltage. So I'm assuming with mine, it actually is the starter that's fucked up.

Also I took apart the starter and found a couple pieces of plastic broken off of something on the inside, which I'm like 95% sure I didn't break while opening it

But yeah, I've learned a shit load about how my motorcycle works from dealing with this just today
>>
>>17762039
It really is. The only thing really throwing me off is going minimalist the dash is. Probably gonna pull the trigger on it if I can find a good deal next month
>>
>>17762076
Not if I have a slow bike with low gearing while not shifting at the top of the power band. At the very least I enjoy using a decent portion of my engine and having a small bike. Is that unfathomable for your guys? Is it Go big or Go home?

Tiger 1050

800 is more of a all road bike. If the huge cart wheel in the front didn't already show you that.

>>17762068
Tiger 800 ergos aren't neccesarily comfy for a lanket. Despite being very upright. It's like your knees are in a vice after very long rides and everything above is kinda detached from that. Thought the streep triple was better imo.
>>
>>17762101

>>
>>17762098
I don't understand what's so enjoyable about massively accelerating engine wear when you're not even going fast. What a waste of good metal.

If I'm going to be topping out my 600 it's either going to be at a track or I'm going to be breaking the law
>>
>>17762099
I'd expect turbo lag to be somewhat dangerous but otherwise yeah the busa is comfy for what it is
>>
>>17762090
Just because its popular doesn't mean I want it. Also I enjoy the canyons/touge and am somewhat of a shitty/newbie rider. It's easier for me to run a lighter bike with a managable power band than some 100+hp bike.
I rode a bike with a large amount of torque throughout the rev range. I am just not into it yet, maybe after 5 years+ of more riding I might be.

>>
>>17762106
the thing about the non linear power memes is that you learn where it is and how to expect it very fast, usually in first gear when it's not going to put you very far over 80mph, during a purposeful highway pull.

people seriously overestimate motorcycle throttles. even supersports require a conscious effort to rev to death, and you're not going to whisky throttle over bumps unless you are literally holding it wrong.

>>
>>17762095
I agree that it is the starter due to the act of broken shit coming out of it. You verified that it was getting power, and you tried starting it outside of the bike with no luck.
The relay click means it is sending power/functioning. I think mine wasn't sending full power or something
>>
>>17762116
Yeah, I'm hoping you're right. If it isn't the starter, that means I accidentally fucked it up without realising it and forced myself to buy a new starter without even fixing the original problem haha

I'll probably have to buy a new relay soon though too. I noticed the voltage reading after the relay was a tiny bit lower than before it. Only like .04 or something, so not enough to matter, but I feel like that's a sign that it might need replacing down the road soon
>>
>>17762105
I mean I usually wouldn't rev up to the redline, heck in the fun roads I run at about 50% rpm's because that is where the power is.

>If I'm going to be topping out my 600 it's either going to be at a track or I'm going to be breaking the law
That's just like, your opinion man.
If I was running a 600 I would almost never use full potential.

I got a 1050 sport, borrowed an 800 xr a few times for semi-long rides. It has it's merits but the 2013 + tiger 1050 is a better bike for the street. Took a street triple for a test drive. Though your experience may differ. It's definitely small, but your whole body hugs it. Thought it was more comfortable. Here's something for the aussies on their p plates.

Just took one of the triumph street triple learner legal bikes apart to see if we couldn't get it to make a bit of power. Got the throttle stop off it to see if the factory statements were true (that it would just dump fuel, etc).

Ran fine, no fault codes, probably making about double the power now. Just like the ducati, all you do is pull the throttle stop and it's basically sorted (probably chuck a PC5 on for good measure to sort the fueling if you're keen).

These things are a little too easy to just derestrict. I doubt they even do much in the ecu either (considering you can get it up to 220 w/ restrictor removed).
>>
>>17762355
Annnnd now you need to get it engineered to be a LAMS approved bike again, when you go to sell it you can not list it as LAMS approved by doing what you did.
>>
>>17762383

I think you might just put the throttle stop back on instead mate.

>>
>>17762391

Insurance would be a pickle - they'll check that sort of thing. This bike is just ctp, so different story.

For ctp they can't terminate the contract for modifications, even illegal ones, because it is a statutory scheme that works on civil liability act negligence tests. Would be a question of whether the derestriction was the cause of the accident (so if you get t-boned, it just won't play in).

There is a Transitions visor available for the RF-1200/NXR that'll automatically tint in the sun and turn clear in the dark, at intermediate lights it'll have less of a tint than during the middle of a bright day.
It's the single best motorcycle accessory that I've ever purchased. Once you've used one you'll never want to go back to separate clear/tinted visors.

What's teh consensus on the CBR500?
>>
>>17762449

Not sure about consensus, but I've seen a couple about. Cheaper end of the Honda game, so what you're getting is a reliable platform that is just stripped of glamour. Finish is average, motor is likely bullet-proof, suspension would be on the poor side. As a commuter, sure. If you want something to have a bit of fun on, wouldn't recommend it (it's a gs500f that won't rust as badly).

Mates I just bought a little 2 stroke dirtbike for my nephew and then got told by a friend that I need to replace the piston rings every 20 hours? Not sure where he got this little piece of trivia but since I dont know an awful lot about 2 strokes I was hoping one of you could help me out. No problems so far (except a slippery clutch) and the bike runs fine with the previous owner never doing this and only keeping up regular maintainance such as oils and the like. Any ideas?
The bike is a 2003 KTM 65SX

It's a cheap parallel twin for commuters who want to pretend to ride sportbikes. If you have an ounce of pride in you, you'll leave it the fuck alone because it is not a lightweight twisties carver any more than other cheap 500cc bikes. If it had a sportbike chassis, suspension, and brakes just with a weaker but lightweight engine it would cost as much as an actual sportbike. And be an aprilia, not a honda.

I lost any thrill to filter through traffic. Last couple of days I only slowly move myself to the stop line on a red light, other than this I behave like a car.
Yesterday I rode down a big highway with almost no traffic and a biker cop catched up with me and looked at me surprised like "why aren't you speeding here?"
Am I becoming an old fart at 26?
>>
>>17762714
I filter like that too. You don't actually get anywhere any faster unless cars are stopped.

Also it's illegal here and every argument I have for it when angry 30 year olds in econoboxes yell at me helps

>weren't you just going 5 over the speed limit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmrZpQw2xxM
>>
>>17762723
>>17762740
I actually do get faster. If I'm filtering aggressively I can beat car's time on my daily commute by half, getting there in 13 minutes instead of 25-30. And even then most of my maneuvers are legal (except for crossing the single solid line when I'm changing lanes in a tunnel).
I just don't feel like it anymore.

Small drop is no big deal but you were wise to check it for reference.

Also make sure your power and ground connections are good. I unbolt the grounds and apply anti-seize to the bolt threads.

I always jump to the starter first then work my way back.

Also know your battery resting voltage. Comes in handy. Usually about 12.5-12.7 volts. A 12-volt battery showing 12 volts even is not charged.

what about gixxers, cbr, ninjas etc?

>what about gixxers, cbr, ninjas etc?

All made in Japan. I think it's just the 390 made in India as well, I really doubt they are putting the 1290 together in Bangalore (even benelli still assemble their show bikes in Italy).

Learn how to do compression tests and don't go by operating hours. Compression testers are cheap and will tell you top end condition. (Also great if buying used bike. Bring spark plug wrench and extensions when doing that because owners rarely have them.)

Get factory manual. It won't be all that bad.

You wouldn't and the opinion of anyone who cares about anime is the opinion of a fool, but drag helmets are fucking stupid on a bike because no air managemet. They are designed to keep your face from melting off for long enough to egress the car or be put out by the safety crew.

Buying helmets for style over function is nigger-tier stupid. You aren't typically staring at yourself from the side while riding. Just get a well-fitting quality helmet and stop thinking silly thoughts.

Or build a drag car to go with the Simpson.

Until you want to go on the highway then dear god you suddenly realize why people like harleys that run at 3k RPM all day long

the #1 argument against big bikes isn't that you'll accidentally throttle, it's that you'll do it on purpose and fail to cope with the next turn. Or person turning out. Just get something that doesn't limit you and doom you to becoming an N+1 fag.

There's shit you can treat your shield with to prevent fogging internally. Raindrops on the outside..uhh... you mean you DIDN'T but a proper set of gloves that have a small little ridge on the left little finger to use as a windshield wiper?

1. Properly ventilated helmet. No cheap shit.
2. Treat your faceshield
3. Gloves with a wiper.

with a 300cc you can even cruise better at 110-120 km/h

anyone else too scared to wheelie?

i ride a drz but it doesn't feel as though it could even lift the front wheel without dumping the clutch at redline.

It can power wheelie, but i shit myself every time it happens and even though i try to concentrate on keeping rear brake covered i always end up losing my footings and freaking out.

ive started slowly practising off road but again i only get it maybe 5cm off the ground and then drop it again.

I just really struggle to sit back and relax into it.

help.

Nah I bet you have those who drive on the right on 60 miles per hour.

Honestly ive never kept a motocross so not sure what kinda bike or how many cc's you riding.

Around 25/30km in first gear I two-finger jerk the clutch whilst giving it decent gas. Keep your foot on the rear break if your angle gets too vertical you can hit the rear break and the bike will come down.

Just watch some youjewb vids on how to wheelie a DRZ. Some mad whoolers there

ive done literally countless hours of that and i understand the process to wheelie, but i always bitch it :( just dont have the balls to pop it up and not give any fucks.

>>

It's hard for me to learn how to do a wheelie too mostly because my bike is my only ride/commuter so if I loop out I'm fucked. On a bicycle I can only wheelie like 20ft before I fall to the side so I can't see myself doing any better on a motorcycle.
I've gotten spurts of confidence to try a wheelie on backroads but every time I drop the clutch my bike just bogs and then accelerates quickly. I've done popped the front tire up by yanking the throttle in first but that's a recipe for looping.

YOLO FAGGOTS

Also you dont have to wheelie on a bicycle to learn how to wheelie. My first wheeli was on the R1 before that I had the ZX7R and before that the CB400 & even before that the 125 and never once did I wheelie. You either have it or you don't but if you don't try as often you'd never find out.

Whenever I let my hand off the throttle (to reposition, to give it a rest, etc) the bike slows down A LOT, lurching me forward. Is this normal or something else? It's my first bike and when I drive a car, letting off the gas does slow the car down, but I'm not lurched forward by deceleration.

I got a TaoTao 50cc a month ago that needed some work. So far I've replaced the carb, ignition coil, spark, solenoid, fuel lines, petcock, and replaced the battery. The guy who sold me the carb said it was serviceable, though, and that was bullshit; even though it was a KeiHin and they're supposed to be decent. I got it running, before the carb started to flood every time, but it was accellerating by itself and not by throttle. It kind of worried me, apparently that can be an air leak somewhere. So gonna order a new carb for myself, and a throttle cable/new air filter/ gas sensor and get back to it.

I did pick up a Flyscooter Il Bello 150 today, too, for free. Its been sitting in a neighbors yard for a year and she wanted it gone. Its going to need serious work, but it has the potential to be a gorgeous scoot. I also plan on getting ahold of a daily driver, so I can have transpo while I fix the two projects.

Cant wait to get some free time to go to motorcycle school now and save up for a real bike, and hang with the cool /dbt/ kids. In the meantime, hell yeah scootbro
