>DrivingLarge Vehicles For Fun And Profit, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Personal Hygene:

Find a community college or specialist 'school' that can get you a CDL, either finance it or pay out of pocket, then get on board at a company that offers tuition reimbursement.

Stick out your two years in the meat grinder to pay your dues, then decide once you're debt free whether or not you want to stick around.

There are also companies that will train you in exchange for you signing a (typically) 2-year contract, and while these are generally regarded as a total shitfest, it's not the worst thing in the world if that is your only option.

That said, aim for a recognizable company - Swift, Prime, and Schneider all get a lot of flak for being 'puppy mill' companies, but the true shitters are companies like CR England, CRST, and a handful of others that aren't coming to mind.

Nine times out of ten, a smaller, locally-owned-and-operated 'Mom and Pop' company will be your best bet.

On e-logs all breaks are 10.5 hour breaks, cause you gotta show 15 mins on both ends for """PTI's"""
>>
>>17743206
How does post trip inspection work, anyway? I never do them, but I used to log a 15 minute post trip just to add 15 minutes to my 10 hour break if I was being run hard. Someone told me if you log a 15 minute post trip that I wouldn't have to do a pretrip, I could just start driving after 10 hours break. I don't even bother anymore, my dispatch has pretty much figured out I like to run hard during the day with minimal breaks and fucking around and when I'm done I want an 11 hour break so I get run accordingly.
>>
>>17743244
You're supposed to pre- and post-trip exactly the same but nobody ever does either unless they ended up with an unfamiliar truck or trailer. And even then it's only until they learned the particular quirks of that equipment.
>>
>>17743258
So will dot fuck me for not logging a post trip? I log a 15 minute pretrip while I clear out trash and shitpost. I actually do the pretrip before I log it so that if I find something wrong I won't have started my clock yet. I never log a post trip. I'm on elogs btw.
>>
>>17743274
>So will dot fuck me for not logging a post trip?
They can.
>>
>>17743244
My pre trip consists of scrolling thru like 20 questions. If nothing is wrong, you just tap one button and good to go. It must automatically log ot as 15min. And the post-trip is done right as I'm logging out, so pretty much as I'm walking to my car in the parking lot
>>
>>17743244

The past two weeks, I have had so many fucking problems like that. One dude has been on vacation, so Tues and Fri I have to cover his route to do this university with a bunch of stops since nobody else knows where to go. So Mon, Wed, and Thu his trailer isn't loaded and guys are swapping tractors around all the time. So I get in Tues and Fri and the tractor on his trailer is whatever broken piece of shit some lazy nig driver put on there because theirs was broken and they just took another one instead of bringing theirs to the mechanic.

Then the next day I get back on my route and should be in my trailer, but my tractor has been in the shop for a week and nobody seems to know why. So they load my route on whichever trailer is empty and has a tractor, and once again I get left with some old POS because I don't come in at 4:30am and steal other people's shit like a nig. So one day this week I try to pretrip the truck and I can't because it had a work order for a burnt out fuse. Instead of just asking the mechanic to change it, they put a note in the little log system and it locks out the truck but the warehouse doesn't know and still loads it and then it takes fleet forever just to clear the code from the system. Then Friday I'm in another POS tractor and trailer, and I can't pre-trip this one because some driver downed it on a count of old wiper blades (shit like that, you can make a note to have it fixed without listing it as a critical defect and downing the tractor) so once again I had to wait around for the mechanic in the morning (he is a nice guy but overwhelmed at 6am and doesn't know all the ins and outs of trucks or the retarded computer system we use) and an hour later I can finally pre trip the truck and go.

And I would've just taken another tractor, but there was only one Kenworth that runs fine until you get it on the highway and it acts like it had a 45mph governor. It has had the issue for months but they don't know what the problem is.
>>
>>17743868
>>17743929
Oh, and then in true Billion Dollar Company fashion, they realize we are short on trucks. So they bring in 5 "new" trucks about a week ago, 5 fucking International 4900s that are 20 years old and none of them have working AC (it's hot in South Florida in August when you are unloading a 46' trailer full of drinks) and we haven't even been able to use them because they all have some critical issue like trans problems on 2 of them.

>have old shitty fleet that is always breaking down and mechanics can't keep up
>need moar trucks
>solution- bring 5 more old shitty trucks that will constantly break down
>>
>>17743929
>>17743937

Kek. Somewhat true

>>17743947
Because if I went and did the same shit at a different company, I would be the new guy again and probably be stuck in a POS truck with a different name on it.

But I should get on something else. I saw another listing for Sunbelt Rentals. Or the fuel companies. I have enough experience now that I could get out of there and move on to something better.

And with those trucks, when I have my own route everyday, sometimes I can hang on to a KW that works or at least that old ass 8100 with no AC but at least nobody would touch it. It has just been screwed up lately because I haven't been on my regular route with my regular trailer 4-5 days a week between hot shots and covering other dude's route and taking a day off.

And the one girl, it's not even friendzoned shit, she just can't make up her mind so I put some distance on that and told her I'll buy her dinner when she figures out what the fuck she wants to do.

>>17743937

Maybe the old trucks are just a stopgap until new trucks arrive?

We're in a similar situation at the bus company, currently awaiting replacements for 2 of the F550 buses. The company has already dumped $13K in repairs on one and it just blew a turbo plus two of the recently-replaced injectors are sticking (courtesy of our local top-notch Ford service department)

So for the time being corporate is loaning us an old '07 GMC 6500 Duramax which has 220K on it. Interior is trashed as fuck but the motor actually has some grunt unlike the gutless 6.7 PSD in the Fords.

Supposedly we have some new Freightliner M2 buses coming in at some point and they can't get here fast enough baka

So much ignorance.

Regs say nothing about pre or post trips.
They say you must perform and log on duty at least one vehicle inspection on any day you have drive time.
Some days I'll drive for an hour then log "VI" at my first stop.
Been doing this for years, had multiple log audits. All good.

It's not the power cord coming off the truck friendo, the dolly has two hardwired power cords that go to the front and back trailers that also control the lighting and ABS on the dolly. No, I don't carry those because we pre trip shit before we leave and mechanics check every trailer on the yard on a daily schedule.
The dollies and trailers are fedex' equipment, not ours (the contractors). I brought a good dolly to the exchange, so I made him bust down his trailers and I broke down mine, took my good dolly back with me and made him deal with his fuck up. Not my problem. He can call fleetnet and wait on them

They literally don't go fast enough to benefit from aerodynamics. Things like spoilers and skirts increase in effectiveness as speed increases, but below a certain point, they're just dead weight.

I highly doubt that aerodynamics play no role at 56 mph and then magically appear at 61 mph.
>>
>>17748460
Maybe the distances travelled in general are low enough that any potential fuel savings compared to the added weight and cost of the skirts make it a losing investment.
>>
>>17748644
55mph is where a truck burns as much fuel moving its weight as it does pushing the air. American trucks usually design for aerodynamics around 70mph, which is realistic with sidewall ratings at 75mph. I could legally run 70mph just about every day.

You're also comparing top speed to average speed. Your eurobox can go 55, but you don't average 55. American trucks average speed is commonly close to their top speed. Trucks in the West can go 70mph all day.

They're both mechanically very similar since they're both made by Paccar, and they have some shared parts, so it really just comes down to personal preference with the styling. Personally I like the Pete 389 more than the Kenworth T800 or W900, but would be happy to drive either.

The front overhang is actually no worse than on any other modern setback axle rig. It merely suffers from unfortunate boxiness because it was introduced in the '80s when aerodynamic styling was still a complete novelty. The first aerodynamic Pete also looks a bit weird.

I've thought about doing the school bus thing. In a rural area of course. I'm more interested in the time off than being a bus driver to be honest. As I recall mornings are pretty quiet on a school bus but the ride home is just a touch noisy. How do you handle the ever-changing stops though?

>>

What >>17750893 said. The downsides are
>worse traction on any surface that isn't dry pavement
>can't limp to a tire shop if one blows
>more expensive than just one regular tire when one blows
There's probably a few more, but apparently the fuel economy savings for a fleet full of trucks and trailers on super singles outweighs these drawbacks. Skyline even uses retreaded super singles, which are more likely to blow out but are cheaper. Don't know how well it's working out for them.

I'm a school bus driver although I also do mini coaches and occasionally a full size motorcoach.

Routes aren't that bad if you're in a smaller district. Some of our routes only take 20 min tops, which is nice when you're getting paid 2 hrs minimum every time you do it.

There's lots of school bus work that doesn't involve driving routes desu. Lots of our drivers stay busy doing athletic trips or other charter trips.

Mostly just part-time in nature, also highly seasonal and mostly old retirees are the only ones doing it.

Some cities have top notch transit departments with lots of OT and decent to great benefits. Others suck ass. YMMV. Good job if you like being home a lot.

> Greyhound type bus

Motorcoaches is the industry term for them. Intercity routes suck ass, you will deal with 40+ niggers or junkies for hours on end.

Charters can be decent. You go to lots of cool places, everything from week long trips to the Rocky Mountains to professional sports team trips and everything in between. Pay can suck or it can be good if you're with a union company.

For the same reason that anything else wheelies. More torque at the wheels than can be translated into forwards movement at that moment (in this case due to high attached weight), but too much grip to break traction, so the torque starts spinning the vehicle around the drive axle backwards.
>>
>>17757229
And in that pic it's the same deal, but the torque also starts rotating the vehicle around its driveshaft.

>>
>>17755530
I wish we could mass execute anybody who's ever used tinder
>>
>>17757480
>>17757483
Doing a wheelie because of euro levels of torque is no problem as it only translates into full weight on the rear axles, which are designed to carry weight.
And an angle between the road surface and the rear axles is also not a problem, that's what suspension is for.
The frame-twisting torque lift of the left front wheel is more of a problem. It's a movement that is not supposed to happen and the truck won't be designed for that. (body panels might start to rub and what not). the fact that american trucks flex so easily is a worrying sign that although they might use strong beams, the connections are significantly weaker. This will undoubtedly result in shorter wear-life.
>>
>>17757971
How can I get to be as good as you at talking complete bullocks?
>>
Kenworth or Peterbilt? Who are the jews?
>>
>>17757971
The worse frame twist in American trucks may have to do with the longer frames to begin with. A standard European tractor is about 5.95m or 19.5ft long, an American tractor varies but is rarely less than 23ft long for daycabs, usually 28ft to 30ft long, and as much as 40ft long for custom builds. The longer something is, the more easily you can bend and twist it.
>>
>>17755638
You probably smelled like open ass and needed a shower
>>
>>17758095
longer frames certainly lead to larger total twist. (end to end)
deformation per unit of length is what it's all about.
As European trucks are designed to carry weight on their frame and usually have options for heavy haulage strengthening of the frame, they are far more resilient to flexing.
US trucks do all the carrying on the rear axles so between the cab and first rear axle nothing really happens in terms of weight lifting. (except off course pushing the cab forward/steering the rear axles). When an excessive moment is applied at the very front of the frame by the engine that moment will have to be transferred all the way to the suspension.
lifting weight requires much, much stronger beams and with 4 axles within a small distance off each other you can expect a lot of cross-members that increase rigidity.
Also: the higher center of gravity of COE requires more rigid anti roll bars.

truck stops need power hook ups. so you can run your AC and Reefer with out running an engine.

I was at a Pilot truck stop last night on I75 in Tennessee. dozens of trucks parked and all running their engines all night.

Trucks need small diesel APUs and many thousands have them because they pay for themselves in fuel savings.

Where American trucks actually need tougher frames it is common for owner operators to order rails and assemble their own. Most common for wrecker/recovery and other specialty operators and very interesting fab.

http://tow411.yuku.com/directory has some amazing shit. Also many wreck photos. If you are a trucker this is a great place to learn how not to die.

how many kilowatts would it take to keep your cab's AC and creature comfort electronics running for the 8-10 hours a day you would be stopped and sleeping at a truck stop?

US average is 12 cents per kilowatt hour.

electricity costs would be inconsequential. the real expense is the tens of thousands or more of set up. to have electrical hook ups for dozens of trucks.

most state laws don't let anyone but electric utilities sell power and by the kilowatt hour. so the truck stop would just charge a flat session fee for access. A few bucks but not more than a price of a gallon of diesel.

But we've tried this bullshit before, the idea sounds nice, but in implementation it is a losing game.

http://www.shorepower.com/savings/

They use exaggerated numbers to make it look appealing, but in the end it's not really much of savings when you factor in the newest models of diesel engines have active cylinder deactivation under idle and most likely use less fuel per hour now than even the best APU's do.

I think they mean the truck can be used in multiple situations. making it a flexible..use truck.

What a faggot you are. You're making payments on all that shit, with interest. Better yet, your daddy probably cosigned on everything or even paid for all/most of your toys.

Everybody in this general knows that and spamming pics of your "possessions" and that ugly trailer park slag isn't going to change perceptions, ever.

Could be registered in a state/province that only requires rear license plates, so the front ones are basically just decoration.

In Alberta you get lots of """""clever""""" and """""unique""""" drivers of European makes, usually Volkswagens, that will get a fake long thin European style front plate to show how """""clever""""" and """""unique""""" they are with their choice of automotive brand.

Yes, but a fake European plate on a Canadian car isn't the same as an incorrect but potentially valid American plate on an American vehicle.

Could it be that aussies are even worse drivers than burgers?

Should have just turned into the impact, and taken it on the nose. The more text-drivers you kill, the less attractive it seems to the rest.

>Gee Bill, how come your mom lets you have five license plates?

Yeah, fair enough. Maybe the thing is just a museum piece now.
