Thinking about trading my FZ-07 in for a bike that's larger and better for some light touring (highway trips and maybe some overnight camping) but still good to commute on every day. Budget is $12K or less, obviously less is better.

Any suggestions /dbt/?

I've been eyeing the FJ-09 and it looks like it might be a winner, but I'm not sure yet. I've been very happy with my FZ-07, so I'd be happy to consider another Yamaha.

>>17695014
>FJ1300
The FJ1300 is a bit out of my $12K budget. It goes for $16.5K which is quite a bit higher, I don't think I could fudge that much.

I'd honestly be open to a cruiser (never ridden one though) because I really like their style and I hear they can be quite comfy for larger guys like myself. I don't want to get into the Harley meme at all, so are there any cruiser suggestions outside of that brand? Indians seem like great bikes but I'm not a fan of their traditional styling. The Yamaha Bolt looks amazing but it's too small I think.
>>
>>17695032
Sounds like you're planning on buying new which I would recommend against unless you're buying a cutting edge bike since you're going to get raped by dealer fees and immediate deprecation.
I know fuck all about cruisers since they're too much of a handling compromise, but I'd look at the VMAX if I was in the market

f800st is the perfect commuter/light tourer

>amazing mpg
>belt drive
>good comfortable ergonomics

Kind of boring to ride though but it gets the job done. The more exciting option is the VFR 800, but has a chain and pretty shocking mpg. If you want to go down the VFr route you might as well look for a 1200 then if you can afford it.

>but boring and characterless bikes

Power is character. None of these bikes are boring. You will get 250 on a good straight and they are much quicker through the tight stuff than litre bikes.

On tighter circuits an R6 will lunch an R1 with the right rider.
>>
>>17695901
Call a Suzuki shop and ask for the price.
>>
>>17695894
Japanese I4 sportbikes could be ugly as all fuck and they would still be boring. Hell, the R6 isn't exactly sexy. There's also an ugly one (FZ6) that's even more boring.

The 600: Press the starter and it starts going "buzzzzz". It just goes buzz and goes faster the faster it buzzes. The buzzing speeds up at a fairly predictable rate. Buzzzzzz. You press the bars or shift over and it turns. The more you do this the more it turns. There are no surprises here, it's all 1:1. No character.

There's the kind of bike you buy to win races, and the kind of bike you buy to ride.

I have a pair of chinese made led aux lights (currently off the bike).

These arent in any way legal on the road here. Homologated ones cost more than 100€, have to be instaled by a shop and then past inspection, more than 200€ total.

If I put them on the bike and some cop in a control ask me about them, can I tell him I only use them offroad and get away with it? Or will I have trouble?

It's bulletproof, efficient, and leftovers can be had for roughly 5k.
If you're just starting out, go for it.
If you're experienced, ask yourself what you want in a bike. Use watchword for these is "competent," because it CAN do everything. It just doesn't do anything as well as the overspecialized competition.
Except maybe touring, and definitely commuting. Gets up to speed comfortably, well distributed powerband, lots of luggage options.

Oh, and if you want to take a wrench to it, it becomes a kickass adv.

I just had my rear wheel bearings replaced. $100 parts and labor. Brake lines are easy enough. You should do that yourself. Probably looking at $80-$120 for good braided lines. Valve adjustment will vary by bike and shop. $250 to $500 for a normal bike. $1,200 to a kidney for a Ducati.

You'll be fine on a small or medium. Supersports and above (600+) are just a poor idea unless you only ride in perfect weather, with a calm demeanor, and consciously avoid any kind of risk for the first couple years.
In other words, ride like your grandmother. And never get caught on gravel, rain, steel, or anything.
Honda's 500 p-twin series is ideal for American roads.
As a general rule, don't buy a Yamaha. Suzuki is cheaper, Kawasaki makes more power, and Honda will always be more reliable.
Yamaha uses low grade parts, like Suzuki. But because they are constantly falling short of Kawasaki's commitment to power, their bikes tend to blow up as soon as you're out of warranty.
Honda makes understressed, overengineered bikes that will last 100k under severe abuse. Suzuki makes ugly, well engineered bikes from paperclips and chewing gum. 80-100k, depending on how much you are willing to replace/redo.
Kawasaki will puke its guts out everyday for you. 60-buttpuckering-k.
Yamaha is not enough of everything to be good at anything. 70k.

If it looks like pic related it's easily worth more than 4K in the US. They are wonderful machines with a great owner community but other than lasting forever they aren't competitive with anything modern. Earles fork BMWs were easily the best built motorcycles of their era. Nothing else came close.

Old CB400s need proper love to be as good as they were new. Old BMWs are actually less fussy because less complex.

Old Honda wiring (including those fucking glass fuse holders) needs loving attention. I use dielectric grease on connections to exclude moisture and make disconnection much easier. The white plastic connector blocks in particular get dry and crumble. I replace fuse holders with modern blade fuse blocks and prefer blade circuit breakers to fuses. Switches age and corrode. They also benefit from dielectric grease which is cheap at any auto store.

There are plenty of vintage Honda forums and the VJMC (great display at Barber Vintage if ya get the chance to go) for support.

The rest of the machine usually does pretty well.

>>
>>17697918
More to the point, what does the bore measure if the rings are done? A machinist with a dial bore guage is the way to go before buying parts.

If there's enough cylinder wear (including taper which is best measured with a dial bore guage) to need cleanup then it's time for an oversized piston.

When in doubt bring factory service manual and cylinder to machinist. (Not every machinist has every manual and rules of thumb aren't always wise to follow with motorcycle engines.)

If going Wiseco then your machinist can measure your bore and tell you what to order based on their info. I do that with my jugs since my machinist builds auto engines.

Many motorcycle shops do not bore cylinders but outsource instead. If you ask where to find a good machine shop they'll often tell you, especially if they are independent shops.

Torque and usable powerband > peak HP

An 80 something RWHP FZ6S is about as good in traffic as its big brother the R6 unless you're darting between supercars on the fucking autobahn
>>
>>17698420
Right, they're better for 6th gear roll on at low RPM which is normal when highway cruising
>>

Lower power bikes are revving so high at highways speeds that they're already in the powerband for that

It's a better buy than a harley or any other cruiser but it's still a cruiser

The arr-rook-same japanese inline-something continues to reign supreme. The FZ09 even has the same peak torque, with an extra cyllinder an an extra 12hp, and stock handling to literally run circles around the scout.

People who ride moto gp do not have enough screws lose to ride the isle.
I believe an Australian is currently the fastest guy around the track.
and isle guys probably could race in moto gp and do very well in it but none of them really have the money or connections to get into it.
I wouldn't be surprised if the isle riders start getting picked up by KTM/redbull in the next few years though.
>>
>>17697863
I like wearing these on my DS, some weekends I'll ride somewhere and go for a hike or explore towns and do a lot of walking. Pretty fun.
>>
>>17698620
they are very fast, but they are skilled in dealing in imperfect race tracks with imperfect road conditions. motoGP riders run many more laps on much more perfect tracks, designed to be raced on that are also already known, so that a rider can better practice for the race.
>>
>>17698681
Also worth noting is that the super stock bikes with treaded tires get extremelyclose times to the super bikes on the TT

>>
>>17698720
neither, if you have a klr250 already get a proper dirt bike and put sm wheels on the klr or something.
>>
>>17698638
Nobody was claiming the Scout was the best bike you bench racing autismo.
>>
>>17698730
It's just a massive waste of money, so jap naked riders can pass you while being as/more comfortable and harley riders can laught at you at stoplights.
>>
>>17698740

Except that Indian is actually doing things and Harley has been stagnant for decades. And why would someone who buys an Indian want to compare their bike to a naked Jap bike? They're totally different beasts.
>>
>>17698740
Then dont spend your money on one.
>>
>>17698620
McGuinness used to be a circuit racer too but accomplished little of note besides a British 250 championship. Dunlop won a few FIM TT championships that included Isle of Man, the old Brno road track, and some regular circuits and had some decent Superbike one offs.
>>
>>17698726
The KLR is dying, so I was thinking of getting something relatively new. I don't want to worry about the thing having issues while I'm out and about.
>>
>>17698752
There's nothing wrong with showing concern for other people's decisions and inputting your tastes and opinions

Echo chambers are bad

>>17698751
They're totally different beasts in image, but the scout more or less competes with jap nakeds in function as one of the few cruisers with semi-respectable cornering ability and cheap power.

With a better suspension, especially in the back, and one more gear it would have been a more brilliant bike, laid back tuning aside (you can get more power out of it if you try)
>>
>>17698408
Why such an old bike?
>>
>>17698796
but better suspension means more ride height means no lowrider cruiser aesthetics means no stealing harley's market
>>
>>17698530
That's what I use on my memebike, like them lots.
>>
I want a $3500~ newer supermoto to compliment my '99 SV650 (I have to do fork seals/bushings, tune the carbs, and other bullshit, just want something reliable I don't have to do anything aside from fuel up and ride)

I came across a $3600 '15 CRF250L with 6k miles, Warp9 Wheels

https://cnj.craigslist.org/mcy/d/street-legal-crf250/6258669873.html

And a $3500 '08 WR250X w/12k miles that's likely been beat (stickered/riced out)

https://newyork.craigslist.org/wch/mcy/d/2009-yamaha-wr250x/6256197044.html

>Does anyone have any experience with CRF250Ls?
>Is the WR250X that much better that its worth getting one likely beat to fuck
>>
>>17698796
The scout has a 6th gear and the scout sixty doesnt need one.

Longer suspension is not hard to come by, but realistically the scout and scout sixty are indians entry level machines, they cut a few corners to lower the price and suspension is always the first to go.

The scout amd especially the sixty have major performance gains with new pipes and a tune.

But again, sometimes a bike doesnt have to be the best at anything to be a good bike.
>>
>>17698834
Dont street a CRF
Valves need adjustment pretty much after every ride
>>
>>17698834
WR would be the most reliable. I think valves only have to be checked after 26k miles
>>
>>17698836
Sometimes, a good bike is outclassed even though it could have been much better for not much more on the manufacturer's part. It's sad when that happens.

>the scout sixty doesn't need one
More gears is always better especially when you have a fuckload o' torks

CRF250L has the CBR250 motor, so its reliable just slow as FUCK. 23hp/320lbs for the CRF vs 28hp/295lbs for the WR

I think I'll just keep looking for a WR, just wish they weren't so expensive. The CRF was mostly being considered since they're newer (2013-2015 vs 2008-2009) with usually half the miles. On paper its inferior though, was wondering if anyone had experience with the CRF.
