Wear full gear. Get a top box/panniers for your books. When you arrive, switch book bag for overpants and helmet. Stow jacket/boots in panniers if you care.
Show up in spaceman boots and power ranger jacket, people will either ask what the occasion is or just figure out you ride.
If you can only afford the topbox, stow overpants, blouse jeans, wear jacket, carry helmet. It's fashion, you don't need to understand.
t. Bought $300 Dianese boots, a week later my threes started leaking at the sole. Dailied boots for two winter months until I could get new sneakers.

My friends and I have had great luck with Ducs and Apes of varying types.

Italian bikes must be more reliable in the Australian climate then
>>
>>17692026
Ethanol gas fucks errything. Messed up my KTM tank, and is a big reason I got the 1198SP Ducati; for the kickass auminum tank. RIP, Duc :(

I usually keep VP C9 on hand so nothing with ethanol sits in the tank for any length of time anymore.
I fully expect this RSV4 to be every bit as reliable as the other 50 bikes I've had over the years.
Well.. hopefully better than the K1200 BMW that got stuck in 3rd gear with less than 500 on the clock. But yeah, I don't expect any issues on this one.

Hey /dbt/ could you help a brother out.
So my bike stopped turning over.
the only noise it makes is a single click when I try to turn it on.
I located the noise and it's coming from a "Hella 4rd" relay. Would replacing this relay fix my problems?
>>
>>17692316
a single click? not multiple rapid clicks?

>>
>>17692321

>>
>>17692084
Yes indeed!
>>
>>17692336
Yes, too low. You just need to charge your battery. Clicking means too low of voltage to crank. You might be able to bump start it if you know how.
>>
>>17692138
When you live in certain states you have no choice. And Acerbis, the maker of all these afflicted tanks, should have used a better plastic.
>>
>>17692344
thanks brother!
>>
>>17692353
No problem br/o/. Good luck. If you're leaving your bike unattended for long periods of time you might want to look into a battery tender. You can install a little pigtail plug so that you don't have to take your seat off or whatever to use it every time.

The bike has been sitting since march because the belt pulley on the rear wheel had all the bolts back out, stripping the threads on the rim as well as breaking the pulley. I started it every two weeks. But then it would only turn over and not start. Now the battery is dead too I guess.

Yeah, starting and not actually riding or idling for 45minutes will just drain it faster than if you'd let it sit. You likely killed your battery. Try charging it, but I wouldn't be real surprised if it didn't hold a charge for shit.

>>
>>17692506
This is my first real motorcycle I've owned (dirt bikes before this), I've had it a total of 5 days so far. I certainly do like it. The exhaust could be louder and the brakes seem a little weak, but other than that it's very nice. A lot of people have come up to me to complement on the look of the bike.
>>
Getting new tires and bike has old inch standard sizes. What's the conversion for 3.60s19 and 4.10s18?
>>
>>17692537
I know what you mean on the exhaust. My 690 sounds like a lawnmower or a crappy gokart with the stock pipe.
The brakes.. eh.. they are a downspec version of brembo. If they still suck after bedding in and getting used to the bike throw in a more aggressive set of brake pads; should be fairly cheap for a single caliper.
>>
If I've ridden dirt bikes for 10 years do I really need some shitty 250 or 500? Pretty sure I'd want something bigger after the first ride.

I need to preface my story by saying that I have no mechanical experience and I am extremely incompetent working with this kind of stuff.

I bought a 2007 Honda Rebel almost a year ago and its been giving me tons of problems. The clutch ended up going out and asshole mechanics tried to charge me 400 dollarydoos to fix it. I attempted to fix it myself, breaking two clutch assemblies. I decided today that the bike isnt worth the the time or effort to fix by myself. I installed the latest clutch assembly, but I mustve reassembled it incorrectly because the clutch had no tension. Either way, I was planning on selling the bike after it was fixed to get a brand new one.

I want to upgrade to something more powerful, at least a 500. I like the classic style of the rebel or bikes like that, but I also like sports bikes and I'm not really sure which kind I want to buy

here are my options:
> New Honda Rebel 500
new take on classic style, but after dealing with the bullshit that was the internals of my motorcycle, I dont really want another rebel
>Kawasaki Ninja 650
>Honda CBR 650R (or maybe the CBR 500R)
looks like they only have one color scheme for them though now which sucks
>Yamaha YZF-R6
my buddy has one and swears by it, but I dont want to break the bank
>some kind of cruiser or cafe cruiser but I dont know any in particular

Things that are important for my purchase:
>dont want to break the bank
>motorcycle/manufacturer must be reliable and well made
>has to look good obviously, color options are important

I dont know much about motorcycles, but I love riding, please help

>>

Buy used Yamaha. Used is a lot cheaper, Yamaha is pretty reliable, and worst case order new fairings in the colors you want they aren´t that expensive
>>
>>17692848
I haven't yet. I purchased the bike at 1300 miles and I've put 1.5k on it myself.

When I change brakes I will likely do lines. The rear brake especially has very little feel and is not strong, and the front brake is a little less vague but has little bite until it's really pulled in.

>>17692863
For normies, the orange frame/wheels are flashy and catches their eye. For experienced guys they just like that KTM is different (around here at least). I've seen one other duke 390 at a meet, and one RC390 at a stop light, but where I live they aren't often seen.

You'll see a lot of 390/200 Dukes and RCs in the developing world (Latin America, South/Southeast Asia), since they're the one and only 'big', 'njce', 'expensive' bike sold in a lot of markets (since they have distribution through Bajaj which is everywhere).

The 1200 is a great touring bike. In no way a dirt bike. I work at a bike shop and the amount of 'dual sport' posers that come through is embarrassing for the sport. They think they are the kings dick because they ride in the dirt. Americans are always so jelly on the Australians.

Hey /dbt/,

Would I be crazy to get an air cooled monster like the 797? I want a lightweight bike with some character but isn't too much of a maintenance burden so I'm willing to compromise a bit. People keep telling me that "modern ducati" is good and that the air coooled engines actually are rock solid.
>>
>>17692940
She is an absolutely solid bike. It's great for filtering, it's really narrow, and extremely nimble. It's a peppy bike for what it is. I get about 100 miles out of the 1.5 gallon tank, and that's because I ride it like I stole it everywhere.

I would buy this bike again. I'd like an updated version, with led console light, a disk brake in the rear, and better gearing.

I have a '09 696 and it's been pretty rock solid so far. However, it radiates heat like a motherfucker. If you get stuck in traffic or at a long light, you're going to cook. I just went from a nice ride to on the verge of passing out from heatstroke because I got stuck in traffic.

I haven't had to do any of the big maintenance items (picked it up at 2900 miles, have only put a few hundred on it) but oil/filter changes are straightforward. I plan on doing belt maintenance myself and at least checking the valves myself, whether I do the adjustments or not depends on if I have a garage by then or not.

It handles great but the lock-to-lock on the handlebars is fuck all. AKA: minimum turn radius is garbage and you'll have to be doing multiple point turns in tight parking areas like a fucking car.

and 3 of these https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/726/19196/Tusk-15%22-Curved-Tire-Iron
Maybe a couple smaller tire irons/spoons too since these are rather thick and can be hard to slide under the bead
>>
>>17693351

It's not horrendous but it's basically the turning radius of a sport bike, not a naked bike. It's also a more aggressive body position instead of super upright like on the FZ-07/09, which is a pretty good thing IMO.

It is absolutely possible to fit a cooler. The mounting points and even the outlets on the clutch are there. You basically just have to buy the cooler and a bypass that replaces a cylindrical oil screen, forcing oil through the cooler.

I love the aesthetics of naked bikes but prefer the body position/handling of sport bikes, that's basically what the monster is.

The feud has already started anew. The Scout has been kicking Harley's ass on flat track racing. It's just glorious to see.

What I wanna see is Indian send 3 Scouts to compete in the Isle of Man TT like they did back in 1911.
In 1911, The brits were making fun of American bikes for not being sporty enough, and for being too heavy> So, as a response, Indian sent 3 bikes to compete in the Isle of Man TT race. They took first, second, and third. Even if they don't win anything, it's be great symbolism and marketing for Indian.

That would be amazing to watch. Either they throw a racer on their normal bikes and just do it as a stunt, or Indian actually tries to make a race bike. Either way, I'd watch the shit out of that.

Even though the base scout is pigfat, the engine itself is great.

Theyve got a heavily modified scout to compete for a land speed record at bonneville. Im stoked to see what theu can do.

Idk if the scout engine can compete at the Isle but Indians head is in the right place.

Thinking about it the FTR750 engine might be able to be modified for that level of competition.

>>
>>17693919
Indian went out of business in 1953 and has had several lackluster attempts at revivals since.
The current revival is the only successfulone because it's the only one to go to Indian's roots and revive that ideology.
In 2011, the rights to Indian were purchased by Polaris, the snowmobile and ATV maker.
In 2013, Polaris relaunched Indian at Sturgis for the 2014 model year with a new Chief and Chieftain motorcycle.
At Sturgis in 2014, Indian relaunched their most iconic model, the Scout, for the 2015 model year. Indians are much higher quality than Harleys and MUCH more reliable. Polaris knows how to make small reliable vehicles.

And in order to concentrate fully on Indian, Polaris is actually shutting down Victory Motorcycles just to concentrate on indian.
And ever since, they've been playing up the "we're back" bit, and the "Muh heritage" in their marketing.
Good bikes overall.

I had a klr650 for a few years. Great reliable bike, Look up the carby mod where you glue one hole and drill out another on the carby slide, Great mod, also you might want to firm up the suspension with some after market suspension. Other than that they have a nice big fuel tank and are super simple to fix. Check the electrics for and faults (lights not working) Also check the air box on the motor side of the air filter. make sure no dust had gotten past the filter. Best to cover the hole at the top of the air box and put an intake hole in the side, just under the seat. then use some mesh to keep bugs and rocks out. They have a big following for a reason. Cheap simple fun.

Are group rides any fun? Where do you find some if you don't know anyone else who rides?

I've had my motorcycle for about a month and put 600 miles on it, but most of those miles are just me going on impromptu trips around my house, and about 200 are from an actual trip to a family member.

look for social clubs on shitbook in your area
look for city / state / country bike forums and a lot have sections for local rides
look for local motorcycle clubs on google or meetup
talk to random riders you see stopping at scenic spots in the mountains / getting fuel / coffee and just ask what they think the best roads nearby are, maybe they'll show you through them

nobody would care you have a ninja 250 unless they're really burning around and if they aren't willing to stop and wait for a second if you get behind they're not worth riding with

Went for a 1.5+ hour drive last week. What do you guys do for entertainment and shit like that? If i dont have music in a car, 20 minute drive feels like 2 hours.

Also how appropriate is it to have my left arm like resting on my leg while trying to sit up? Still getting used to having seat time on a road bike, dirt bikes have a more upright seating position. Hard to ride for an hour straight for on an off-road plate only dirt bike.

Chief classic (naked)
Chief vintage (gay fringe)
Chieftain (hard bags, fairing)
Roadmaster (full touring with trunk)

And in the 2018 lineup they have the option for the different front fender and rim

So anyone here made fiberglass body panels? I have a good part that has some cracks in it, so I can make a mold from that (positive mold?). How ugly and expensive is it? Anything special need to be done to have a good exterior finish that will take a nice paint job and gelcoat?
>>
>>17694318
Get some helmet speakers or low profile ear plug headphones.

Depend on the state not having both hands on the bar maybe illegal. I do it becuase I have carpal tunnel and my hands will cramp up. However, you really need to focus on using your legs to pinch against the tank and using your core to hold yourself up, alternating between the two as you get tired.
>>
>>17694244
naturally that's the first thing i did
but there isn't enough space around the sprocket to really pull the chain off easily, maybe if i get a bar in there and bend it but dunno if it'll fuck my chain

>Went for a 1.5+ hour drive last week. What do you guys do for entertainment and shit like that?

Nothing I just generally don't do boring rides, I have earplugs in and no music.

>Also how appropriate is it to have my left arm like resting on my leg while trying to sit up?

not too bad, I mean we all ride one handed every now and then.

Trick with sportsbikes is to sit forward, you want to be about an inch back from the tank, then you can grip it with your legs when braking etc.

Try practicing braking with one hand and holding on the tank to stabilize yourself etc. and you'll get the hang of it, the forward position just behind the tank is also not just comfortable but the best position to be in when cornering for control and balance on the bike, the back of your seat on a sportbike is only for tucking in and braking on track where every bit of help could make a difference.

If you look at a racer they will 90% of the time when not braking or going down the straight be glued to the tank.

Nobike here.
Within the next 2 months or so I'm planning on getting my first bike, a beginner bike and going up from there. I have a friend who's experienced who will be taking me out riding with him soon.

What I want to know is what are some good places to check out for jackets and helmets and boots and all that? What's a reasonable amount to expect to pay for a leather jacket and a decent helmet?
>>
>>17694648

$500-800, don't forget boots and gloves though.
>>
>>17694648
Can get a decent leather jacket for like $100 on craigslist, and a helmet for $200.

Depends on where you live as to where to buy the gear but you should get your helmet or at least size one up at a brick and mortar store to make sure it fits properly.
>>
>>17692214
you should be able to swap something like a 50,70 or even an 80cc kit onto the bottom end safely enough. You can get kits and stuff like that online; just make sure you get gaskets and set your carb/efi to match the new bore and possibly change the exhaust if you're using it for bucket racing or the like.

And try to get /quality/ parts; sometimes it's hard to find them you'll want them otherwise you'll be buying a new kit in no time.

i found a pair of these on kijiji (canadian craigslist) for 60 bucks. Having velcro makes me feel like a child again, but they're waterproof and designed specifically for motorcycle riding.

On dirt bikes i exclusively wear running shoes, tried wearing MX boots and it was RETARDED. First time i rode a road bike i was wearing shoes, it felt super weird having that much wind getting shoved into the top of the tongue. Rode around with steel toe boots for a while, was uncomfortable because shifter peg always ended up hitting my toe and not the toe cap.
