How much do you earn and what's the max you would be willing to spend to buy a car?
>>
>>17689471 (OP) #
Household income of 60k

Buying one for 50-60 next year.

Most I've spent so far was 20k, have always bought used. I'm 24 and it will be my 8th car. This will be my first new purchase.

I've always argued buying used, and still say it's the better way to go. I want a vehicle that I know exactly what's happened to it for it's whole life since it got off the lot. No rattles caused by somebody's Mickey mouse fix, no scratches from people setting shit on the roof, etc.
>>
Household - $190,000-$200,000

Max - $80,000

Currently 2017 BMW X5 ($67,000) is my most expensive

$10k AUD a year (uni student on government payments)

Currently I wouldn't spend more than $3-4k, but if I land a decent job I wouldn't have a problem spending upwards of $80k on a car.
>>
>>17689471
Income £48K (personal, also household as I live alone)

Max I'd pay at the moment with the mortgage and other bills, about £30k
>>
$50K net per year. Max I would spend is somewhere around $25K. I like to tune cars rather than buy something that's already pretty fast.
>>
>>17689471
11k. No more than 10k
>>
>>17689550
I'm going to buy my wife an x3 or a q3 depending on what's around. Women love those things
>>
Not much. $10/hour.

At this point, I probably wouldn't bother to look at any cars over $20,000.

I bought my Lexus for $16k. The styling holds up pretty well, so casuals probably think I'm some well-off professional lol
>>
>>17689471
Household $190,000-$210,000

Just bought one for over $100k

So did the wife, unfortunately.

>No rattles caused by somebody's Mickey mouse fix, no scratches from people setting shit on the roof, etc.
>He thinks cars are magically made by a wizard and not assembled, and often fixed before leaving the factory, by human hands
Early failures are much more common than ones after a car has been out and about for a year or two
>>
I am a freelance software dev, so my income changes a lot. Last year I grossed $84k though, year prior to that it was about $56k. I am on track to hit $70k this year I think with the current project I am on.

I wouldn't spend more then $300/month on a car payment + insurance. Outside of that seems like a waste to me.
>>
>>17689471

This seems like a bad idea.

You're going to be paying that off $20,000 vehicle for a painfully long time at $10/hour.
>>
Make about 50k right now. I bought my toyobaru new(ish) for 21,500 with 5k mi on it
>>
>>17691075
I actually got the title back in April.

You can have nice things if you save up.
>>
Over six figures

Max probably 50k, but it would need to be something I really need or want

Cars lose value quick, so it would suck to pay that much and lose it all since I decide to keep the car longterm..
>>

Hey there dataminer! I earn $-10000 every fortnight and I'd be willing to spend $3.1415926 on a car.

$72,500

I spent $5600 on my 04 Mazda 3 6 years ago, $3400 on my wife's 00 CR-V 2 years ago, and $2600 on my son's 94 F150 3 years ago.

With 158k gross income, I could get a ~65k car with 20% down and 0.9% APR.

I'd still never go that high. I don't think I'd ever spend more than 40k. Not worth it

i have 3 ivy league degrees and am a physician, make 350k a yr, spend only 20k cash on a car

absolutely NO REASON anyone making less than 250k a yr should spend any more than 20k on a car. cars are the worst way of spending money possible. basically 99% of americans have no reason to be driving anything better than a 1k civic.

I make a little under 250k. 200k is the max I'd spend but only as a one-time thing for my dream car and only after my savings goals had been met.

Current car was about 110k, and I plan to keep it for 10 years, at which point I'll either buy my dream car or just keep my current car forever.
>>
>>17689471
>Individual income $45k

There's nothing new that I like and is in my range, so under $15k for an older 4Runner is what I'm looking at.

~$100k. Bought one for $30k after taxes, etc. recently. I have low rent & can't buy a house unless I strike it rich, so fuck it.
>>
>>17694315
So I see the bait here but this is actually pretty close to my situation. My wife and I are both in professional specialized fields so we pull in around that much.

We have old cars that we got years ago and I finally just bought something around 20k. I probably will buy something fun and more expensive at some point but I see no reason to at the moment, gotta keep stacking my chips.
>>
About 30k a year

Unsure what I would spend; got my car a couple years back and plan to not get another til I -need- to (should be another 5-7 years), so a lot can change between then and now.
I'll calculate my budget for a car when its required.
>>
>>17693115
I'm in the same boat as you. I make just as much except I never liked spending more than 10 grand for a car.

If you notice the underlying trend in this thread: the more more you make, the less you spend on cars.

People who have money have money because they're smart with money. You don't go blowing 1/3rd or even more of your annual income on something that loses value. That's just fucking stupid.
>>

About 40k.

I'd spend about 15k max.

The amount you earn is kind of irrelevant. Out of that 40k I have about 20k of spending money because I live cheaply, while some people claim to be living paycheque to paycheque at 100k.
>>
>>17695493
>If you notice the underlying trend in this thread: the more more you make, the less you spend on cars.

You saw that with Sam Walton and Mr Buffett. They both hung on to their old cars except Mr Buffett had to get a new one because his wife kept on nagging him to get a new one with modern features and accessories.

http://www.cleverdude.com/content/lessons-on-humility-from-the-life-of-sam-walton/

Even though he was a billionaire many times over, he drove a Ford pick-up truck, and he lived in a humble house in Bentonville that almost anyone with a job could have afforded (Michael Bergdahl, What I Learned From Sam Walton, (New York: John Wiley & Sons, 2004) p. 114) and he purchased many of his clothes from Wal-Mart. Bernard Marcus, chairman and co-founder of Home Depot, recalled going out to lunch with Walton after a meeting in Bentonville: "I hopped into Sam’s red pickup truck. No air-conditioning. Seats stained by coffee. And by the time I got to the restaurant, my shirt was soaked through and through."

Sam Walton was made in america but sold mostly chinese goods.

/thread and the money saved paid off my homes early. Disposable income and no debt is very nice.

I took my cue from used car dealers. I met many very rich dealers at auto auctions and rarely do they dump money into personal cars because they have wiser priorities than pissing away cash.

One gent who owned a 200 acre salvage yard would take the tags off whatever he was driving and skin it out if a customer needed parts. He's a millionaire several times over, owns a house in the Bahamas, and gives zero fucks. He's famous locally for building a road through what was technically wetlands. He asked if he paid the fine could he keep the road. He did, he did, and the fine was around a million bucks. He's also known for shooting and killing two dindus who tried to rob him in separate incidents over the years.

Even if you aren't rich you can copy success.

Probably no more than 50% of my yearly income before taxes, which is a little over 60k at the moment.

Just bought a new car though. Financing about half of it. Yes, debt is "bad" but I'm using it to build my credit. When I do buy a house they'll look at my credit history and having a large loan like car payment will do nothing but help. Especially because I'm diligent with paying things back.

I could easily afford the car payment too since I'm currently saving over $1700/month after my IRA (already maxed) and 401k contributions. Figure I could put some of that towards a new car because fuck it. Life's too short to drive a boring car.

Currently making 50k while living off mommy and daddy, my only expenses being gas, insurance and school. Parents pushed me into spending 26k cash on a new accord. Honestly would have rather saved the money for a house, or other investments. No reason to drop more than a 1/2 a years wage on a new car, especially when a top of the line one with leather seats, a v6, and other fancy shit costs less if it's only a few years older. Reading this makes me even more depressed that I folded.
>>
>>17697755
>Life after 50 is fucking horrible.
It's great. I didn't smoke or become overweight. My joints and back are in great shape. But a lot of others that are close to the same age are overweight and have bad knees or backs. Taking care of your health is just like taking care of your car (change oil, wax, scheduled maint, good gas). Human bodies and cars can have bad luck, but ignoring the lemons and bad luck, both bodies and cars can go on in great shape even when older.

There are people here in the 70's that walk around fairly spry. Probably a key thing is they have medical plans courtesy of their jobs. If you only have minimal medical care from medicaid (many doctors don't "accept" it), then life is tougher. Lots of Practices have evolved tricks to legally discriminate against patients who have lower profit potential.

>Why put so much money into a depreciating asset?
Because there are a lot of people who love that magical first year of owning a new car. And there are even more who enjoy that first 3 years of bumper to bumper warranty. So those people eat the depreciation for people like you who then benefit.
>>
>>17700758

Would spend $1.5m max, would have to be a good deal though

My income isn't fixed and I haven't had much work lately. Last job I did was for my aunt and I got lowballed. I don't really have to pay for shit so I wouldn't mind spending as much as I could earn on a car. Currently, however, I'd only be able to spend about 5k on a second car. I was thinking about a Miata or MR2 since I want a different experience from my heavy Volvo S80. It's decent for road trips but it's not nimble at all and has a 4 speed auto.

>How much do you earn and what's the max you would be willing to spend to buy a car?
OP, I sure as hell don't buy a car to impress the types of social club golddigger girls you showed in your picture.
