>Here's a thing to discuss, what insurance companies do you guys go with?
>What are some things I should do or avoid when purchasing insurance?

i'm 24, male, reasonably cautious, with a 12 year old sport bike worth 2400 USD and basically no experience

i decided to just get minimum liability and matching underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage until i get a couple years of riding under my belt and i can get better rates. i'm parking it in a garage atm so no theft insurance and comprehensive was too expensive for what the bike is worth.

i started looking at online quotes. a couple of them had fields asking "what insurance did you have before?" with dropdowns to choose from like 15 different companies - why thank you for telling me the names of your competitors, company, I'll be sure to get quotes from them, too.

i went with Nationwide, which was the lowest rate I found. My family has car insurance through USAA, which partners with progressive to sell bike insurance. Might check them out if you have a vet in the family, it was second lowest for me I think. Progressive by itself was also ok. Geico was a bit more than I was expecting. I found lots of smaller places in my area but most of them wanted to quote over the phone, or you submitted a form with your info online and they said they'd call you in a couple of days with a quote. I only checked a couple that way, but I'm a procrastinator so I had to buy insurance FAST to make the deadline for the title transfer form.

Does this seem like my drz piston rings are shit? Compression test shows 60 psi. I added some oil to the cylinder and got 100 psi. There is an auto decompression on the exhaust cam but the Suzuki manual gives compression spec with it actuated at 135 psi. The compression increase after oil makes me think it is the rings.

Will try a leak down test tomorrow to see where it's leaking from.

hey dbt

im a massive car guy and ltierally never done jack shit with bikes, but there's 1 bike i've always wanted: a harley V rod

I want to get one but because i have no experience with bikes i think im prone to fuck something up/ drop it/ maybe die

what are some good starter bikes, or does that only really apply to port bikes? think i can just straight up get the V Rod? at the end of the day it's mostly a cruiser.

As far as I can tell, Urals (and Dnepr, etc) are hobbies. Not a bad hobby to have if you can afford it and have another bike to ride, but a hobby nonetheless

the gap, you need a vernernier caliper to measure it though.

Are you a big guy? Harleys are heavy.

They're also expensive for what they are. Dropping something expensive stings a bit. Google to find an MSF basic rider course in your area; that'll give you a couple of afternoons of structured riding on a 250 bike that you don't need to worry about dinging up. If you're lucky they might have a couple of different types of bike - mine had cruisers and groms; i've heard of some having dirt bikes, etc. This will at least let you try out riding before investing too much.

there are jap cruisers that sound like harleys and look like harleys (to me, anyway, who knows almost nothing about cruisers) but that don't cost like harleys or break like harleys. research before buying, as always.

cruiser displacement != sport bike displacement; starting on 750 or 800 is fine. Heck, leaf mechanic anon started on a sportster 1200 and he's still fine last we heard.

basically unrelated but

Yes they are fast. They are consistently faster than most Harleys because most of them sit in a pool of oil on the driveway.

WAAAAAAATTTTTTT

Animation studio SILVER LINK is celebrating ten years in business with a new series due to come out in October. Titled Two Car, the original series will focus on the world of sidecar racing.

SILVER LINK is the studio behind shows like Baka and Test, Kokoro Connect, and the current summer series Restaurant to Another World.
Two Car stars character Yuri Miyata and Megumi Meguro, two schoolgirls who are each other's exact opposites in both appearance and personality. The pair join forces to become motorcycle sidecar racers, challenging similar mismatched teams all across Japan.

There are already plans afoot for multimedia tie-ins for the series: a manga adaptation, game, and more yet to be announced

Cruisers are the special Olympics of motorcycling.
>can't go fast
>can't go off road
>a Ninja 250 can go straight all day if you ask it to
They're a redundant motorcycle. They're specialized in the easiest thing a motorcycle can do well. Just have good build quality and handlebars. Done.

Torx are not necessary for going 60-80mph for 8 hours.
Also Ninja 250s sit bar stool straight. Swap out the clipons for handlebars and you can easily ride in a straight line until you're bored to tears. A natural result of any cruiser riding.
So if the point of a cruiser is not necessarily to go fast, then the best bet is to buy a bike with high reliability and build quality. And probably a good price point.
Thus, Japanese cruisers.

Torx are necessary for accelerating from low speeds with a lot of weight on the bike.
Riding position isn't just your upper body; leg position plays a big role in riding comfort over long periods of time.

I agree about foot position. That's the big downfall of using a standard bike as a cruiser. Luckily you can shift your feet on the pegs, open your legs, or grip the tank, and stand up or kick your legs out. So you can do something about the riding position messing with you.

Literally any Japanese motorcycle with no fairing, also called a Naked bike, does the same thing.
Buy a Suzuki GS500 first. Find one with low kilometers if possible. They're a pretty cheap, no frills beginner bike.
After that bike, you'll know what you want.
>tfw I have a Ninja 250

Ayyy lmao I should buy a Kawasaki Versys or a Vstrom
Kinda digging the Versys 300. Every review says if you pull the ABS fuse out, gear it for torque, and put a rock guard on it, you have a capable dual sport.
Maybe those will be on the 2019 Versys 300...
Of course I could also man up and buy the 650s, but I also like having to keep a tiny engine revved high. It's a challenge.
But, off road, I'll probably want the 650.

Power cruisers would kill hurrley because none of the kids these days want a hurrley so Americans need to believe a cruiser has to be a half tonne chrome behemoth that makes more noise than power.
>>

They are the same price as an ABS FZ07 but only have 2/3 the power, barely over half the torque, and are 45lbs heavier. If they did sell them outside of Japan and Cuntland you'd be bitching about them being an overpriced underwhelming Honda like the CB1100.

Big One is being merged with the CB1000R next generation, so that will be a global bike.
>>
>>17641514
cb650f competes with the fz-07 and it makes 89hp to the fz's 75hp but the fz-07 wins in weight with the cb650f weighing 208kg with fuel/oil and the fz07 weighing 182kg wet.

Personally i would have neither bike.

>Now, how bad/good are Urals in terms of reliability?

They are well known for the ease of maintenance (because it's a military machine) if you're willing ot get yourself dirty as well as the high frequency of required maintenance.

Nobody drives them in Russia, they are used as a toy to play around in the garage. Although you're probably talking about 1990+ Ural, we don't have them (export model, too expensive). Pre-1990 costs ~ $500 here and if you think that they have made a huge progress in the last 40 years then think again.

Being a man is about providing a foundation for your family and your community.

Riding one lump of metal over another has nothing to do with it.
Making money isn't half the task.
Watching this era's circus actually distracts from it.
Eating an excess of animal carcasses makes you less capable.
Being concerned with your image and comparing it to another are both antithetical to manliness.

Related: The bike I ride because I need to head the next generation of my family. It's cheap and reliable, because as student, soldier, janitor, firefighter, telecommunications worker, factory worker, cubicle rat, or NEET I need to be there for 40+ family members across three cities.
And those are the ones who aren't in prison right now.

So, tell me again how choosing the nondescript,
unglamorous, or frugal path makes anyone less of a man. I'm all ears, Jim-berb.

Whenever i try to lift weights, i feel a sharp pain in my arm after i got in a wreck...

I ran into some sand on the road in april while turning right, it was after the snows melted and there was still alot of sand on the road. bike slid and i tried catching myself with my right arm. I assumed it would heal in a few months but its been almost 4 months now. Im fairly active and have been trying to work it out but i still feel a sharp pain and can only do half the reps i used to before it becomes too painful to do it.

Any suggestions?

Where the bicep meets the shoulder, i dont feel any pain unless im trying to lift weights above my head or do dips, pull ups, something of that nature. Sometimes if i move the arm too fast i feel a sudden jolt. The pain has never been that bad but its enough to not want to continue doing whatever i was doing and take a small break. I feel like working it out has made it less severe but i still feel a minor pain.

But the government forces everybody to have insurance now. Take advantage before it's cut, and get your shit fixed. Exercise improving the situation suggests the problem is musculoskeletal in nature, so it may never improve on its own.

sounds like it's probably a rotator cuff injury because of falling you might have mildly torn a muscle from the impact. lifting weights irritates the muscle (strain on the slowly healing torn area + overworking the healthy area) and then hurts. give it some rest and just do light range of motion type exercise, no heavy lifting involving the arm for at least 1-2week.

I'm considering buying some road flares for twisty rides so shit like this doesn't happen. Usually I ride in a group of a dozen but having someone flag down traffic in general is dangerous and impractical. In the video they didn't even have anyone extra to flag down traffic for them. Yes flares are a fire hazard but you're supposed to be them back on the road in a visible spot before the corner and away from any leaked fluids. They're not likely to go off in your bike even in the event of a crash if you keep them under the seat since they have protective caps. I checked with my local PD and they said they're legal for civillians and I mean they'd be fun to play with too, aside from the dripping.

Any thoughts?
>>
>>17641977
Thanks, I planned on lubing it first before buying any parts anyways. Cable lube is handy to have, but I do like the color options of the clickers. I'll probably still buy them eventually but a sticky cable is a sticky cable regardless. It'd be odd though if it's a lube problem, it's a brand new bike. I'll call the dealership and ask them as well, I'm fortunate enough to live by a very friendly and well-priced one who don't mind giving advice.

Oh yeah I just remembered something completely off topic, a few threads back someone was curious about what it was like in a civilian psych ward.

Well one of my roommates (underage) was found dead with 16+ bullets in his head in a park and another guy (mid twenties) I knew drowned his mom in a swimming pool. I'm sure more's happened but out of the ~1000 patients I've met those are the only stories I've heard of. They don't allow us to talk about it on campus obviously.
>>
>>17641985
Where are you grabbing the clutch lever? The lever on that picture looks like it might be a bit hard if you're grabbing it right near the pivot point.
Also like the other guy said just check it's not kinked anywhere and that it's adjusted properly.

How is the clutch return on it? Is it just a hard pull or does it also seem to resist coming back out?
What bike too? Also maybe it's just a lot harder than what you're normally used to, if it came with any 'bonus aftermarket parts' they might have thrown in super stiff clutch springs
>>
>>17642016
That picture is from google, but I do understand your point. It's a stock lever so it goes all the way to the bar end but my pinky and ring fingers are pretty useless anyway. The freeze cramping happened mainly on the middle finger.

The return action flies out to the point where it makes the brand new tires squeak alarmingly loud. People I was riding with were like what the fuck you cant be braking like that dude. Good question though, that'd lead me to think it's more the cable itself?

It's a brand new bike wth 120 miles on it so maybe the cable needs to break in? I'll definitely lube it and inspect it though, it'd be a real shame if it came from the factory in such a state. Yamaha is respectable in my books.

It's a stock 2016 R3 with 120 miles, I'm transitioning from a CBR250R with 5k+ miles. Pic related shows a hole in it but it's irrelevant.

just don't go WOT in wide lean angles in the first 50km.

remember, we are in 2017. if new tyres were as dangerous as everyone thinks they would be forbidden
>>
>>17642028
Just take it back and ask to try pulling a brand new clutch if they say it's fine. The clutch on that bike should be quite easy to pull so unless you have absolutely no hand strength you shouldn't be having any problems. I dunno what you're doing to make the tires squeal but you release it quickly, but under control.
Take it to the dealer before all and just get it checked, worst that could happen is you get mocked for struggling with a perfectly normal clutch but mistakes are made at the factory all the time and it could be a few things.

>>17642031
Get that thing away from your tires right now, I hope you're joking. You just ride it to 'scrub in', just go easy (no super fast tip-ins or hard flicks from side to side) but get a feel for how it behaves as you lean it more you know.

Any idea why a loud squeak when I downshift? It's most likely coming from the tires and could be related to me letting out the stiff clutch too quickly due to fatigue. I just hope it's not coming from something internal. I thought up till now it was a combination of poor clutching and a new tire.

you haven't driven a non abs bike, do you?
is it the same squeking you get when you slam the rear break? then it's your tyre.

in principle you are using your engine brake to the amount your rear tyre skids for a short time.
this also will happen with a tyre that is broken in.

does it happen all the time or only when you are driving 'with the knive between your theeth' ?

Yeah, but its never been ridden. So that's why, what do you look when you check out a bike that's barely been ridden. All I can think of is if the bike runs cold and for rust in the fuel tank

Personally I think the XSR900 looks pretty sweet, though I've not done too much research.

Unrelated, what's /dbt/'s opinion on Ryan F9? From my perspective, he has one of those faces you kind of just want to punch, but his reviews seem well done. Any recommended motorcycle youtubers?

Yes I thought so too when I first watched him but he's bretty cool and they make fine videos.
Have you watched their review of the XSR900?
>>
>>17642971
Yeah, just the other day I believe but I forgot most of the details; basically that his take was that it's a good bike, but for a niche that doesn't really have much application or place or something like that. I'd love to get the chance to try one myself though, as much as I want to get a sportbike next I really like the look of the XSR and it seems like a perfectly adequate "sporty" bike as well.

I rode an XSR900 at a Yamaha Demo Days a few weeks ago. My boner hasn't gone down since then, the doctors can't explain it. It was my first ride on anything stronger than a 46hp v-twin, so I was not expecting the front wheel to come up when I went to pass a farm tractor in first. It was in standard profile, traction control on. It had the full Yoshi exhaust dealer option, the sound was amazing. Did a good bit more engine braking then I needed just to listen to burble-burble-pop. Unless something amazing happens, I will be getting one at the start of next season.

I also rode an FJ09, which didn't seem as well behaved (twitchy throttle), but I was told that someone probably left it in sport profile.

I think jumping straight to a V Rod is a bad idea if you've never ridden a bike before. Like other Anons said, try something lighter and less expensive first. You will fall down at some point and it will most likely happen in the beginning. It's best to let it happen in a cheaper bike than a Harley.

Once you're comfortable you can then sell it and buy a Harley.

I myself started out with a Honda CBR 125cc, then a Suzuki Gladius 650 and only a few years later did I get a Harley. I don't think I would have made it if I had the Harley from the start.

Just my 2 cents. Stay safe and ride well.
>>
>>17643008
Man, now you're getting me excited. I think the dealer near me has one now that I recall, may even be up for test rides, so I may have to stop by again soon. Though I can't exactly put myself out to buy something newer, even if I do trade in my current ride, unless the price is really good.

It was nice starting out on my V-twin, but I just want something more fun now, and the XSR seems to have fun in droves without limiting itself by riding position to be completely averse to long distance trips as well should I want to visit some buddies.
>>
>>17643029

Can't hurt to try, good luck anon. Vacation trips with dads are always pretty good if you're on good terms and doing them on bikes is even cooler. My dad stopped in his 40s when I was about 12. We did one day trip when I was 17 and allowed to ride a 50 cc moped, that was already pretty fun but he hasn't touched his bike since. Now I'm 25, have my own baiku and convinced him to get rid of the old junk heap that would cost like 3k to get running again, found him a good deal for a beginner bike (because he hasn't ridden anything with more than 20 hp in like 20 years, and that was just his friend's CBR for like 20 km).

On the topic of heavy clutch pulls, I've been looking into tweaks for that on my sv. I'm not sure how to lube a cable yet but it can't be that hard. Do braided cables help?

>>17644679
You take your engine apart being autistically careful about the orientation of the camshaft and pistons, and you stick progressively thicker little metal strips into each valve in each cylinder one at a time until a strip won't go in. If it's wider than it's supposed to be, you stick a little thingy under the valve head until it isn't.

The first is for cable clutches, the latter for hydro clutches

There are little plastic adaptors to squirt lube inside the cable, but i think you can do it without (just dirtier)
