I have seen it suggested that you should lock the "chock" of your heel onto the peg in order to put as much pressure on the tank as you can and "lock" your leg in under braking to keep you as stable as possible and take work away from your arms.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeMSfgb5tks

(this is a very long video with some coughing bastard in it but good info)

I've tried that and I can't really do it so I just leave it on the ball which is most comfortable for me, on road you don't really brake hard anyway and rapid direction changes are more the order of the day so it's probably best to leave it there anyway.

Other anons pointed out the fact your body position looks weird and you look uncomfortable but not telling you why and to me it looks like you're sitting very far back on the seat, when you're cornering you want to be completely crowding the tank, about an inch back at most, your legs use the tank for leverage and it puts you weight wise in the middle of the bike. You almost want to make a tank shaped hole with your upper body and slot it in.

Other stuff like getting your lower and upper body further off are (sort of) important but I'd say that the front to back position and balancing out the pressure on your front and back tyre is more important, being in the right position up against the tank will make it easier to lean more off too.

Question: What jap team did you start on and what bikes made you appreciate other jap manufacturers?

Me: Started ownership team Honda but learned to appreciate Yamaha after riding a few R6's, an R1, and finally a WR250X. Good bikes. My little bro bought the 250x and I think he wants to get rid of it...maybe i'll buy it it's so fun to throw around. Had to ring the necks on both the R6 and R1 but good chassis and build quality. R1 I rode was 106indicated in 1st and didn't wake up till around 9k.

The gixxer 600/750 and DL/DR/SV 650's helped me to really appreciate Suzuki, even rode an old GS 650/Canotuna 600 a bit. The 600 is a well sorted chassis and good motor/confidence inspiring. The 750 is a 600 on major steroids. Still lust after a K5/K6 1000 to pimp out. The only analog animal that could hang with my 10R. DR is like a good old school bike...not new tech but solid and good for play. Would appreciate a major update. The DL/SV motor is a great motor. Prefer the 650 to the 1000 versions in both flavors.

For Honda it was the Blackbird, CBR600RR/1000RR/RC-51. Hell I even liked riding an old Goldwing, shit was plush. All great bikes in their own respect and good build quality. The RC has aggressive ergos and the CBR1000RR is geared short but liked the HESD.

Kawasaki started on a meh 600R that I made my purpose in life to surprise better riders on better bikes. Little 16" rims with skinny tires/not great power but felt like I could throw the thing around. But then went to the 10R. HOLY FUCK the 10R motor is bonkers. That was the first bike that legit scared me. They didn't knickname it the widowmaker for nothing. Almost fucking died on it in the city one day just riding to my gf's house. Had a legit tank slapper because of the perfect conditions and almost ate shit hard. Kept it up and remember getting off the bike and smoking a cigarette and just staring at the thing. The brakes were meh at the time but the MOTOR...good god the motor.

Anyone got stories?

My F4i has low pegs so I have to keep the ball of my foot on the peg and kind of push my knee up with it to keep my knee in the dips of the tank if I want maximum knee grip. I've done it both ways though and it didn't seem to make that big of a difference so I will just leave the pegs in the arch of my foot if that's how they are when I come into the corner.

What kind of mileage do people get out of KTM dual sports? I have a gut feeling they're not designed to last past 20k.

Also, re: BMWs, while I wouldn't worry so much about them self destructing (they're presumably too heavy and overbuild), how bad are part prices? Again, having no first hand experience my guess is extortionate.

KTM is supposedly p reliable for what they are. However as with any higher-strung dirtbike they have short maintenance intervals, so just expect that. Any bike will last long if you maintain it well.

>>17620832
That's exactly what happened actually. Kinda wanted to buy an S1000RR but after checking out a local BMW's back storage I found the MV and picked it up for $6, which isn't too bad considering most of the 1000s I see on cycletrader and shit are sitting right between $8-$10

their actual dual sports (LC4, 600+cc) are actually fairly reliable and long lasting. Their smaller ones are basically racing dirt bikes with some compliance gear to get license plates and might last 20k but probably not much past that unless you're really easy on it.

Are +250 Japanese dual sports dead for good?

The DRZ is the most modern by far and it's near 20 years old. You'd think at least one of Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha/Kawasaki would see a market opportunity in offering something lighter and more powerful in light of technological advancement (and in light of what KTM/Husky/Beta are doing), but with the Nipon Seal of Quality.

I think she just didn't want to damage it, like risking it falling over or something cause she'll feel bad. Is it still possible to do a compression test with an auto decompression cam? I am getting 40 psi on my drz400 and adding oil to the cylinder gets me to 60 psi. I am thinking this is low but could this be due to the auto decomp or just shit rings?

I have the airbox open and throttle is open as well. This would still cause low pressure? I was having problems with the bike stalling while accelerating from a stop. It had problems starting after I reinstalled the carb until I added oil the cylinder.

Clutch baskets on fz's are ass, ive seen a couple posts on fb pages about them randomly shitting the bed.

You can get a billet replacement out of australia, almost double what an oem basket is but at least it will last forever and you can stop worrying about it.

Do a lot of clutch-ups? Just wondering.

Yea, that's what I figure. The cost I'm not too worried about, was looking at something like a CRF 250 or WR250R as a first one. Used in decent shape or new (they aren't that much new). Something small and light I can throw around, not worry so much when I drop it. Not so much for highways but tooling around town/neighborhood, and trails.

A standard would do just as good for most purposes, but if you're serious about single track, the CRF250L is a good choice. The rally version has an expanded gas tank, too.

I took an automotive painting class in college. The painting itself isn't hard, just about being smooth and not going too heavy on any one coat. The rest is prep and making sure your surface is clean, which is very very very important. As to your question about masking and sanding, it's hard to sand and not fuck up any sort of masking without being super fucking particular. Best bet, especially for a motorcycle with not a lot of paintable area, is to just start from scratch and paint it how you want it.

Dunno how strippers would fuck with any sort of masking, didn't do too much with that.

For everybody's elucidation, I'm thinking of hitting up carmax and having them match the orange, green, and white from this. Doing a fat stripe in white, then a thin and lower portion in the other two. Alternating by side.

Known him my whole life, get invited to dinners, eeryone that works there knows me by name. It is Yamaha's insurance that is the issue. I can ride whatever bike at the dealer I want though, which is exactly what I did when they turned my down the first time.

Oh, you won't let me demo an r1? I'll just ride this s1000rr from the dealer instead :)))))))))))

They saw it too. Fuck those guys.

My tigger gets noticeably light and a bit wobbly at the front-end at 140mph/225 km/h.

Is that normal?

Notice it was very windy out, I've never taken another bike up to these speeds and wasn't really putting my weight on the front.
>>
>>17622472
Not 200% on how they're usually prevented, but older bikes got speed wobbles somewhere around that range.
>>
>>17622472
Pretty normal.
My bike does that at 140km/h if I don't have a windscreen on.
>>
>>17620733
Older for cheaper would be a 06-09 SM with 7-20,000 miles for $3-4,500. Granted, likely will have mods.
>>
>GSX650F is basically perfection

Is there any non-pigfat 600c baiku with full fairings and standard riding position that can be had for 4-5k?
Alternatively how hard would it be to fit lower fairings onto an FZ6? The half fairings are uggo af.

Depends a lot of bike and riding surface.

If your bike's gets notably light at 120km/h and wants to fall into corners too much, your steering bearings could be dying.

But that's 120, not 220. Light steering at those speeds can be normal.

>>17622539
Steel chassis CBR600F F2 and F3 from 91 to 98
CBR600F F4 and F4i from 99 to 06
FZ6, as you mentioned. Yeah I also find it kinda ugly. Also, very upright.
SV650S
2nd gen FZ1 has a wet weight of 220kg, borderline fat, but still 20-30kg less fat than GSX650F. Not full fairings though.
Ninja 250/300s maybe. Actually the ergos of the Ninjas are all over the place, but one of them could fit your bill.

Actually reading my list I just realized these are all on the sporty side. You can fit a gigantic universal aftermarket windscreen on any naked bike. Just see what's around you and check cycle-ergo.

Don't forget ergos can be adjusted, see pic related.

>how hard would it be to fit lower fairings
If you can find them googling, you should be able to install them.

The appropriate question is how much are you willing to pay for them. FZ1 has fairing lowers for about 360€, but I'd rather spend the money in something else.
>>
>>17621564
For the benefit of my non weeb friends of course
>>
>>17622539
Its not that bad anon. You only feel the weight at lower speeds. Its incredibly stable at highway speeds because of the weight.
>>
>>17619675
Super late reply but they are H4 according to the manual and some light googling.

H7 bulbs are two pronged if I remember correctly with only H 5 and 4 being 3 pronged and 5 base is too big to fit in there.

>>
>>17622637
License laws make it so for roughly the first three years of riding, 650cc is max in Australia and most ~600cc i4 bikes either arent allowed or are restricted. :) And the 650F isnt a bad bike. Underwhelming suspension, heavy, but its certainly not a bad for the price.

>>17622639
Like any other windshield. Its not overly effective if you are tall though, but if you have a decent enough helmet its okay.
>>
>>17622643
I have an AGV K3 and when I ride my MC22 with a loud exhaust and I need earplugs because the exhaust drones like crazy. It sits at 10k rpm at 110kmh and the wind noise is awful. It doesnt whistle, but the wind noise is fatiguing.

>Don't understand the earplugs meme

Have you ever been on a club/disco and your ears were ringing afterwards?

Try riding on the highway for 4 hours at 120km/h and tell me how that feels. Well no — don't do that. You'll feel like you were punched in the ears. Several times over.

Try riding with an aftermarket exhaust without the baffles either on the toogay, the highway or the track. It will feel awful too.

My 250 was rated at 83db with the stock exhaust and I rode a lot around town. Ear plugs were pointless doing that.

My leader bike is rated at 95db and I ride it 100km a day sometimes on the freeway. It's a loud environment.

After your first case of post-ride tinnitus and general fatigue you may come to understand it.
