I've always been curious. Why do girls never stand up when riding dirt bikes/motocross, or even bicycles for that matter. I feel like it was instinctual for me, but I see so many stupid crashes/wrecks from girls because they refuse to stand up..
>>
>>17607353
Poor core strength.
>>
>>17607339
The fuck is happening to the seat?
>>
>>17607353
Matter of confidence, not gender. What sort of accidents would be avoided by standing up?
>>
>>17607342
what bike
>>
>>17607366
The sort where you jam your face into an engine block when grandma pulls out in front of you at 60 mph. Instead you go over, slide a bit and laugh it off because thick leather jacket eats road rash.
>>
>>17607366
Plenty when dealing with technical dirt tracks. It's not so important on street riding
>>
>>17607379
Oh sorry, I read that incorrectly, I didn't know you mean dirt.

>>17607373
You are better off taking evasive maneuvers with your bike rather than your body, hardly anyone's reaction is going to be to stand up and supaman that granny as you go over the bars.
>>
>>17607339
the windshield fits it strangely well
>>
>>17607387
If you're going to run into the side of a car, you can
>brake
which compresses the forks, gives you downward momentum and leads to your body digging into the obstacle,
>try to evade
which at high speed has a high chance of doing nothing substantial or making you drop the bike, in which case you're at the perfect height for kissing metal, or
>stand up
which catapults you over the car and gives you a good shot at surviving.
People's instinctual reactions in dicy situations do more harm than good (watch TOTW sometime).
>>
>>17607402
braking will lessen the impact significantly though
>>
>>17607415
Would you rather ram your head into an engine block at 40 mph, or slide across some asphalt in leathers at 60 mph?
>>
>>17607402
Or 4:
>do a willy
Which makes you riding across the car, and nothing happens
>>
>>17607422
Anon how the fuck are your riding your bike that your head is at engine block level?
>>
>>17607422
more like hit the windshield at 30 vs fly through the air doing a double-somersault at 100
>>
>>17607429
That's for advanced riders only.

>>17607430
>front wheel hits car
>forks compress
>front wheel can't move laterally anymore
>bike's inertia has to go somewhere
>bike pivots forward

>>17607445
1) You aren't doing 170 kph on roads where people could pull out on you.
2) You aren't scrubbing off more than 100 kph in less than 20 m.
3) How are you going to hit the windshield when t-boning a car?
>>
>>17607461
Yammienoob could probably find a way
>>
>>17607461
>pulling out in front of me

meh, i dont see that happening, i go slow at all intersections and if there is a car waiting i always ready myself to avoid it.
>>
So my shifter detached while I was riding it. Pulled over and pushed it work. My coworker bolted it back on with a pair of plbut it was a pain in the ass because it didn't have a regular bolt, but a thin bolt with a cir clip. Thank you for reading my blog
>>
>>17607492
As you should be. We're talking about how to behave when you ARE going fast, and someone DOES pull out in front of you. Maybe you didn't notice the intersection, or someone runs over red at high speed, or whatever.

So last night I finally bought my dream bike. A 2018 ktm 500 exc.
My question is, since i need to change the oil at the 1 hour mark, how do I get an oil filter for this thing since the shops in the area are telling me that they can only order parts for 2017 bikes. Do the 2017 and 2018 model share the same motor that I can use an oil filter meant for a 2017?
>>
>>17607825
oil filters are pretty much universal
>>
>>17607640
my state doesn't allow that, the bike needs a NHSTA plate on it. So I'm limited to pre-82 stuff.
>>
>>17607833
not really, especially not with boutique bikes like KTMs

>>
>>17607844
You can put a yamaha air oil filter in a KTM :/
or any other brand for that matter...
turns out companies that make oil filters make them in all the sizes..
i had a kawasaki oil filter on my honda for a few months this year.
>>
>>17607862
It actually a good idea on a new motor, any swarf left behind in manufacturing ( accidental ) will be caught by the filter within the first hour.

Some guy on a forum once spoke about how the dealership just measured the oil filter of his bike with a vernier caliper and pushed him "the right one".

Bike engine seized 10k kilometers later, because the inner diameter of the oil filter was too small and didn't let through enough oil.

You're also talking about KTM, who more or less completely revamp their bikes every year. Get a filter for your make year and model.

>Ducati 1000cc V4 consistently 15-20 HP more than competition with the same size motor
Sure anon.

Speaking of which, what if Ducatis new V4 superbike has that kind of horsepower advantage? It's one thing in MotoGP where the bikes are let down by poor handling and Lelrenzo, but a 225 HP literpeter on the street will be a big fuck you to all the competition.
>>
>>17607883
KTM never changes their filters...
2012-2018 all use the same filter size.

I highly doubt a brand new engine would have swarf in it unless it's from some REALLY shitty manufacturer in china. Any speckles in the oil after an hour are probably from the rings and cylinder wearing in, a process which can take a few hundred to two thousand miles depending on the engine.

well it's more to do with this specific engine being very old and me being very cautious. it used a wire mesh filter for large debris and a centrifuge in the clutch to filter the oil. Thinking about selling my 2007 Yamaha v star 1100. Been looking at some sport touring bikes, specifically the Yamaha fj 09. I want something with a little more pickup and better handling.

Do you all think this would be a wise choice, or should i look around some more? The only reason that i don't want to go full sport bike is because I'm six feet tall, and it seems like it would be uncomfortable to ride all curled up like that.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Yes their 1300cc twin makes more torque and about the same whp as the inline-4 1000cc's. And frankly for it's price and huge displacement advantage it should do better. It will be interesting to see if they can make good power at ANYWHERE NEAR the same pricepoint as EVERYONE else. Their desmosedici was a 989cc V4 and made around 160-165whp with exotic bits on it and cost like 75k. The 215chp you quoted from the 1300cc is with a full ti akra system on it so the inlines still tend to win when they get to that even playing field (flash/system) even though they are down torque because of the massive cc/size difference they still tend to crush the ducs. Ever wonder why you don't see the ducs at the drag strips or in a lot of roll races on the streets? Because they lose. We'll see if they can finally offer something competitive at a similar pricepoint.

Their 959 'discount' Panigale costs more than a GSXR1000 so I'll bet my nuts on how this V4 will also be expensive af.

The price includes more than the engine. Those things aren't as mass made as the japs and they have really fancy frames/components. I don't see why they'd need to have a similar price.

They have 200cc extra, yes, but 2 less cylinders so none of that 'hurr durr it's unfair' nonsense, please. Nothing prevents the other brands from developing 1200cc twins themselves.

As for how those bikes perform when being modified, the Panigale is constantly seem fighting for the top of championships. This has been discussed at a /dbt/ not long ago.

Ducati didn't win 6 gorrilion superbike titles by not knowing what to do.

You mean they keep getting raped by Kawasaki? 1st and 2nd place Kaws are btfo'ing Ducati. Look at the points spread Kaw is raping with no lube. And in stk1000 Ducati is currently ahead by a single point. Out of the top twelve spots in stk1000 Ducati holds only 2/12 spots while 4 cylinders hold 10/12 spots.

Of course there are many more variables at play here like amount on grid and budget and quality of pilots but the fact remains

The grills would be a bonus but I have no clue what next bike I should look for. I was thinking some kind of sport tourer. I want to experience a 600 before they get killed off in my lifetime, I'm 21 so insurance would rape me and a 1000 would instakill me. After riding a dual sport, a cruiser would probably be really weird but I don't want a pigfat one, I'd want something along the lines of Easy Rider.
I commute my DS and ride around town on the weekends but I want something I can hop on the highway with and go on short road trips. And if I ever get a grill, then it'd be a nicer ride for both of us than a dual sport which can do 80mph but not that safely.
>>
>>17608786
>So its going to cost a shit ton more and offer about the same performance.

And that is what is expected by people. Because Ducati. Ive gone over this before...they get significantly more motor to accomplish the same tasjk correct? would it be fair if the japs got to run 1200cc inlines against the 1200cc twins? Well of course not that would be bloody murder. So Ducati chose an engine design that isn't as competitive to the point that it needs additional displacement just to compete in the class. So the japs have to essentially sandbag just to give Ducati a chance. Then you look at the pricepoints...Ducati is almost always more expensive even by your own admission.

Conclusion:
>Ducati overpriced/underpowered

boutique bikes

When the championship was created the rules allowed 750cc 4 cylinders and 1000cc 2 cylinders. The 4 cylinders eventually got a displacement bump, with the twins promptly following through because the Italians complained that it would be too expensive to keep a 1000cc v2 competitive against a i4 of the same displacement. It was agreed then that 2 cylinder engines would be allowed 200cc extra but would have a lower state of tune as well as a 6kg higher minimum weight.

Once again I must point out how foolish you come across when you say 'more motor' without taking the number of fucking cylinders into consideration. It would not be fair if the japs run 1200cc i4s because those would have completely different dynamics and throw away the balance these regulations created.

It would be fair, however, if they were to run 1200cc twins against Ducati's own.

But they don't.

>B-but it's more expensive.

First of all we are talking about two distinctly different applications for the bikes: professional racing, street, and non-professional racing. And then you have different types of racing such as LSR, 9/10th, 1/8th mile, 1320, etc. Ducatis are non-existent relatively speaking when it comes to drag racing. They are relatively non-existent when it comes to street racing. They are relatively non existent when it comes to LSR. They are minimally existent when it comes to non-professional roadtrack racing. They are primarily represented in professional racing. So off all the places we could see them, we see them in relatively few places. Do you disagree? On the streets that 200cc advantage in displacement becomes 300cc's of advantage or more specifically 286-287cc advantage when competing against a 998/999cc 4-cylinder. So how can we level the playing field? Well we can look at a duc 4 (street /because that is what WE buy) vs a jap 4 street. But what qualifies? Well, the desmo was a 989cc V4 and we know that it put out about 160-165whp compared to the jap 4's putting out more at the same time in history. But there is more to consider isn't there? WHAT is the PRICEPOINT? If a Ducati costs 75k and the jap bike costs 12k don't you think that is telling? So now even if the jap wasn't comparable performance to the duc what might a person do? Buy the 12k bike and upgrade it/personalize it to their liking while still spending less money to have a motorcycle that will outperform the much more expensive duc? YUP. Ultimately, Duc offers comparable performance at a significantly higher pricepoint. Do you disagree? Nope. What other conclusion can I come to? So for people to be really attracted to the ducs they have to be attracted for OTHER reasons than performance. That is to say: status, looks, etc. This is by definition a boutique bike. This is why those most interested in this class of bike are usually interested in a much better performance per dollar spent.

Right the japs don't run a 1200cc twin or a twin at all because they know that they get a better powerplant in the 4 cylinders. THAT is why they run the 4 cylinders whether that be an linline or a V4 and regardless of firing order, etc.

Duc has been focused on the twins for the torque advantage and then have tried to negate the initial drawback of the twin to begin with. Let me ask you a direct question: Why don't the 4's run the same cc size as the twins? Why don't the 4's get an additional 200cc's over the twins? Because it was decided that the only way for the twins to be competitive with the 4 cylinder powerplants is to get extra displacement. Right? Yes I say, "more motor" because they get to literally run a larger motor! The side effect right off the bat is more torque, no one is debating that. So you admit that if they were allowed the same size displacement that the Ducati would not be competitive correct? Answer that question. We already both know the answer to this don't we. a 999 twin would get anal blasted by a 999 4 cylinder. So again and finally:

>Ducati
>Overpriced (by your own admission)
>Underpowered (by your own admission)

Sorry to hurt your feelings. It's just the truth.

Are 90's bikes unreliable?

I know old bikes are considered problematic, but that's based on 70's bikes, which were unreliable.

This bike has new tyres and a new instrument panel, it looks like it's been taken care of. And it's the correct colour for a honda :^)

If the owner seems like someone who takes care of their shit and it looks like it's been taken care of you're probably good. If you're not mechanically inclined you should try and bring someone who is. Check for leaks and scratches, see if the controls feel good and all of the lights work properly, if the chain is lubed and how much brake pad is left, make sure it goes through all the gears.

CB 400's are great and a 90's one should still be reliable and give you many years of enjoyment provided it hasn't been abused.

like really yamaha, why not a hydraulic clutch, or a 300cc, fuck even an electric start
>>
>>17609844
Why? Yamaha is leaps and bounds ahead of the Japanese two stroke competition, because they are the only Japanese manufacturer still making two strokes. The only other competition is KTM, who they can't beat without investing more money than they'd ever get out of it, so why not keep doing what they're doing and getting all the customers who can't afford a KTM or believe the frame snapping meme.
>>
>>17609844
motorcycles are a niche market.
2 strokes in western countries are a very, very niche part of that market, basically motocrossers who are too edgy for high performance 2 strokes. Or perhaps a diminishing junior commuting market (less and less so).
It's on the way out.
If you want a 2 stroke I'm pretty sure KTM (DANGER, STAY AWAY) has a new 2 stroke with EFI.
