Thinking about getting a 1985 GPz 550 as a step up from my 250 first bike. Does anyone have advice about the GPz? Is it a decent middleweight bike? I'm 6'1" 150lbs.

Took my HD out into the sticks today. I had to navigate harsh terrain. As an American riding on an American icon I accepted the challenge.

On the wings of Abraham Lincolns blessed spirit I overcame the perilous obstacles. DESU I'm thinking of selling my KTM now. As Harley truely is the only bike I will ever need.

>who the fuck replaces ONE suspension spring with a Chinese copy?
>goes away a few days after he relists it
>tells me i should have contacted him the day he listed it instead of on the next weekend because he's going away for 2 weeks
>expects me to travel to the other side of the city to test ride it

I could get one from a dealer for this price, just without the "brand new custom seat!" and without a long history opf him calling his bike a lemon 6 months ago

he's acting like it's rude of me to ask around about his bike and find out it's actual history of mysterious leaks and mismatched rear suspension, and that it's VERY rude of me to be asking around for people to help me source a different one instead of waiting around for two weeks before buying his.

I am currently running a moto guzzi v50 (500cc) as my first motorcycle. Luckily it is a project bike so we had time to work on it. We re did the jet's and fixed the timing, as well as add a hall effect ignition system. After that we have been doing some other mods, but it runs fine. Of course having 2 carbs to mess with is ok.
What I will tell you is that it can be ok if you have some money and another bike to ride incase something goes bad.
We had to put in a new starter, and do springs up front and a new shock in the back. I also weigh 185 and am 5'10.
TL:DR if you have other transportation to your job, and am ok with having to wrench it is ok. Otherwise good luck.

Took my cafe racer for a spin today.
I don't fit into any certain molds or trends so this style of bike fits me the best.
I went out to the local Bruhaus and slammed a couple delicious craft beers and talked with my peers about the simplicity and true riding experience you get from cafe racers.

On the way home I stopped at mommys house and she gave me a 20$ to go pick her up a couple things. ( kept the change)

Took my Super sport bike out for a.

Serious ride. I take this shit way too seriously. All of us look the same and wear the same gear. We gather on forums where we share our groupthink circle jerk logic.
It's not made in Japan it isn't reliable. If u start on a liter bike you'll die.
Why do 600's have better resale?
Insurance.

Did you know Harley's can't actually go faster than like, 10mph out of the factory?

They are so de-tuned to get passed emissions, they can barely work, the dealers reload the computers on them. it's a loophole that allows them to sell old inefficient engines.

It's Enfield.
As in the bicycle, motorcycle, gun manufacture.
Had a huge role in WW1 and 2, Pre WW1 British colonization, made rifles that are still considered war worthy.
Also I like the look and smaller engine size for easy riding.

ok so im the guy trying to decide between a Vtec and a non Vtec Honda CB400

if the main difference is fuel economy in lower RPM, the price difference is aobut $1000, more than 50% more for the Vtec version

$1000 would give me more than 600L of fuel
600L of fuel on a CB400 would take me 12,700km

Doues anybody know of any real differences between the 1999 Vtec CB400 and the 1998 nd earlier non Vtec versions?

Other than fuel, VTEC is fun to play with. And in poor weather you can essentially put the power back into the can.
Is there a model forum for the su-four? Maybe look around their for other major changes.

I know, for example, the 500 twins got lowkey improvements to the cooling system, ignition cylinder, and other long-term ownership niggles when they redid the bodywork on the cb500f and cbr500r. Honda improves manufacturing year by year, so you may even want to look between major design iterations.

Old bikes are for cucks.

If your bike is older than 1986 you are officially a faggot and belong with the cafe racers.

You can not tell a modern retro from an old shit bike...

The only reason to own a pre 1986 bike is hipster faggot points.

I mean even in Australia the white trash people or bogans as they are known here often have facial features that are unique to them.

I don't know why but sometimes I can just tell someone is going to act like white trash just from how their face looks... I noticed this when living in an area with lots of white trash.

The being able to tell white trash facial features tend to show more in females and the males are more likely to look normal...

I'm kind of getting the vibe that american white trash has the same kinda features.

I had to go to an employment place in the australian version of a ghetto.

One bogan lady went up to the employment lady and said "I'm ere faw a fakin job aye" in the most bogan voice possible. I'm not making this up.

There were some junkie looking people that were genuinely trying to turn their lives around though.

"I want to get a job and turn my life around but I am covered in shitty tattoos and can't talk properly"

I actually admire that kind of self awareness... a lot of them don't have that.

Like they had a training class for job interviews and stuff where they were trying to teach people not to speak like bogans and you could see some were really trying...

Like they were genuinely struggling to talk normally without bogan slang though.. it's almost like a language to them.

There are some good ones but they are statistically make up a lot of the prison population despite being a small minority.

Drug and alcohol problems are really big for aboriginal people and many even sniff paint and petrol.

I don't disike them and I know there are some good ones as well as bad ones.

Also they get heaps of help from the government that non whites don't but still blame the white man for bringing them down.

If they could criticise themselves and their actions a bit instead of blaming all their problems on the evil white man they would be much better off.

6'1" you will be a bit cramped for the legs on it but you should be used to that coming from a 250 so shouldn't be a big deal. Rider triangle should be decent. iirc these make around 65chp at a little below/about redline...figure torque about 35-40lb/ft or so at probably around 8-9k. A little heavy for what it is but not too bad. Decent handler with goofy rim tire size so might limit your choices with the bias ply selections...but afterall it is an 85. Pretty good mpg figure around 48ish depending if you flog it or not that will go down. This bike is a classic old school that predates the newer 600's...you can almost see the evolution into the newer bikes as they kept bumping compression/cc's/carbs and dropping weight ala gpz600r getting quicker and faster and getting better and better handling. I had a friend with a mint one of these in his barn that I wanted for quite a while just to flog around on but he wouldn't sell it to me. Good little bike if cared for and maintained. I would just run the bike almost completely stock personally...just make sure all wear items are in good shape.

If you want this thinking it is almost a 600...well yeah in cc size but remember that this bike would be lucky to break into the 12's and tops out prolly around 120 or so. Not bad but nowhere near a newer 600...think of this as a good trainer for the bigger faster bikes. You will get used to the higher rev inlines and the weight (and them some) of the newer 600's

Age isn't a huge problem on bikes. I would focus on how many years the bike has been sitting. They will probably need a new battery, maybe brake pads soon, tires, and depending on the recent use can need a fuel system cleaning.
Fuel injected or carbureted. Time out of use is what hurts machines.
Also, check online on the forums for things that go wrong with the bike beforehand, and ask if they have been addressed when purchasing.
>>
>>17604111
Make sure you remember the statistics like blood alcohol content, and just read the handbook and memorize. For me the car part was the hardest. I took it 3-4 years ago and the random facts were lame. I would do the msf course for cheaper insurance and some riding experience.

So far I only keep low beam on at night, and high beam on during the day.
>>
>>17604943
why, retard?
you switch on the high beams when you start taking over someone so he notices your actions in the critical moment. having them on all the time is retarded, annoys other drivers, and is dangerous.

Which CBR? The 500R is basically a fared street bike [ergonomically]; the 650F is a nice introduction to I4s (though I'd advocate looking at the naked version too, those downpipes are a work of art, it's a shame to hide them); the 600RR is a twisties monster and the Blade is, almost paradoxically, more relaxed on the road than the 600RR (assuming you are disciplined with the throttle). I wouldn't advocate purchasing the latter two if you've been riding for 10 months.
>>
>>17604966
Seriously? The guy at my msf course said to just keep them on during the day.
>>
>>17605001
Following a car with your high beam on, even during the day, is unbelievably shitty and dangerous because it will force them to ignore their wing mirrors and, even if they do flip their rear view mirror, they'll lose context as to your location because they won't be able to see anything but your silly light.

At best, you'll end up rear ending them when they brake too hard and, at worst, they'll fail to appreciate your position when you overtake and you could end up under their wheels or forced into an even less forgiving obstacle (like a tree).

i know that some people do this, i did it myself after i got my license, but i realized its actually pretty dumb.
the dude you follow doesnt have to see you all the time, the important thing is that he sees you when you pass him, and that he knows what youre about to do. as the other anon already said, you dont want to force him to ignore his mirrors.

when i ride, i flip on my highbeams right before taking over. that way i force the driver in front to notice me in that crucial moment.

Woke up late today and still didn't feel like leaving the bed so I resumed reading TOTW2. I've been riding for about a year now, and never been to a track day. Most of what's in the books is completely useless to me. The parts that are not (countersteering) were described much much better and briefer in the california safe riding pdf someone linked yesterday.

I don't remember how I got to TOTW but I remember buying them even before the bike to have something to think about before riding. I kind of wish it had been that pdf instead.

It can but it looks like a bit of a kludge to do it. Leddit has a community (/r/gpdwin). It's called a GPD Win, I got mine from Banggood but it's probably worth shopping around.

The thumbsticks serve as a mouse and scroll wheel (shoulder buttons act as the left and right mouse buttons) but the switch makes them emulate either a Dinput or Xbox 360 controller.

So just to be clear, for counter steering, I literally just apply pressure on my handle bar on the side I want to turn? And I should avoid actually steering by rotating my handle bars past 15mph?
>>
>>17605251
Yes. But please try it out on an empty parking lot or something, it might be tricky at first.
>>
>>17605251
You won't even need to think about it before long. The absolute main point that will be drilled into you in any riding course is to look where you want to go, and the bike will follow. You'll countersteer without even thinking about it as long as you're keeping your arms loose, knees gripping the tank, head up and looking through the turn.
>>
>>17605251
Have you ridden a pedal bike?
It's the exact same
>>
>>17605251

Counter steering is what it takes to initiate a turn.

The faster you go / the tighter the turn => the harder you push (or even push and pull).

It also works while you are riding at low speed, but it's not as obvious since natural negative feedback that stabilizes the bike once the turn is initiated is much less and steering angle / turning circle is tighter.

V-twins are unique enough to have multiple cult followings, and being midsize bikes they are cheap and easy to ride, and exceedingly easy to upgrade once you wanna go fast

The reality is more complex than that.

Speaking about road bikes (supersports/superbikes) you generally initiate a turn by pushing, or even by pushing and pulling if you need to turn really fast. Once the turn is completed and you are picking the bike up you better pull the bar, that way it's easier to recover if rear is starting to slide.

the bottom line is: go to a fucking track and learn to ride that thing. take classes. hire someone. read books

>Turns his indicator on and slows down, think sweet and start to move
>Turns indicator off
>I dont process it and just keep moving
>He slams on brakes and honks
>I ride off trying to escape from the embarrassment and turn off the first side street
>>
>>17605251
you press the bars enough to make the bike lean over and start turning
when it is leaned far enough and turning in the way you want it, you should relax the pressure on the bars enough to keep the bike on a steady line

the bars will always rotate, but it's not like steering a tricycle or car.

the bike leans first which requires the front wheel to point out of the corner, opposite to steering (countersteering)
then the front wheel points back into the corner and tracks at a natural angle to follow the line through the corner.

it is a far more subtle movement than you will read of.
>>
>>17605327
I don't think about it. In 5 minutes after that fall some girl in a BMW catched up with me breaking the speed limit only to send me a kiss, that was kinda cool. (little does she know that CB400 is a cheap ass bike and I'm no match for someone who drives a BWM)

How the fuck do people go on week-long camping trips on a motorbike and not bring at least the equivalent of a pair of saddlebags and a luggage roll? I mean the fucking sleeping bag already takes up one of the saddlebags, the roll (a small one in my case) is taken up by tent + mattress + bits and bobs for maintenance, which leaves 1 tiny saddlebag for clothes and shit. I don't think I can leave my backpack at home...
At least I won't need the tank bag this time and I'm leaving the blanket (green bag) at home even though it was comfy as shit in my tent.

you're packing too much
people go camping by only carrying things on their back
take this approach, only take what you can carry on a back pack and you will find out what is truly essential. then by convenience of saddle bags you can easily pack more for comfort.
>>
>>17605364
The kind of people who go camping on foot are the kind of people who spend hundreds on a tent or sleeping bag to get the tiniest and lightest one possible. I'm on a budget. Plus on a motorcycle I have to bring chain lube and cleaner, gear, rain liner etc.

>what is truly essential
That's the thing, the essential things are
- tent
- sleeping bag
- mattress
- bog roll
That shit alone takes up one saddle bag (or entire backpack) plus the luggage rack.
I actually am leaving a lot of shit at home that I brought last time (the pic is 2 years old). No need for an air pump when I have healthy lungs, a tire fixing kit when it's unlikely to get a puncture, a full body rain suit when zip-in liners work fine etc. I still can't get below 2 saddlebags + roll on the rack. Might as well fill up the back seat with the backpack (which is handy for the day off and for exploring the towns I'm staying in on the way down and back up) and pack some convenience stuff like pants that don't make me look like a bum, walking shoes, repair manual, ...
I'll go down and load up and snap a pic for you.
