shifter issues.jpg
1MB, 3134x1080px
Straightening my shifter rod made the lever stop getting stuck when upshifting, but I couldn't get into 1st after I put it back together. Only neutral, 2nd and up.

Thought I put the pinch nut back on the shaft going into the engine rotated by a notch or something, so took it apart and messed with it, trying different pinch nut positions and different placements of the lock nuts on the rod, but nothing changed.

Now I'm thinking it's actually that the lever is running into a frame bolt (indicated in first and last pic) on the way down, limiting its range of motion (maybe it wasn't happening before because the connecting rod was effectively shorter when it was bent).

Given the frame scratches (first pic) it seems like the bike was dropped, bending the shift lever in and scratching the frame. From what I can tell, it's this lever http://www.ebay.com/itm/Outlaw-Racing-OR2380BK-Gear-Shifter-Lever-Pedal-Suzuki-SV650S-/181794460061 and it's not supposed to be as bent as it is.

I've never used a blowtorch and never heated and bent any piece of metal larger than a paperclip; how hard would it be to bend this back? I could get a torch, but don't have any vices or anything. I have pair of vice grips, various pliers and crescent wrenches, a ball peen hammer..

Also them cracks in my rearset mount... I'm thinking that's a high prio replace, right?

That's not even the stock shift lever, it's the $15 Flea-bay replacement. It bent that far without breaking, it will likely bend back. And if it breaks, you get to wait for another $15 shift lever to arrive from i5motorcycle or equivalent ebayer.

At least it's a dry heat in Cali. Here.. it's like driving through 100+ degree soup. When I was at AIT in AZ, running felt okay because the breeze was cool and dry, but when I attempt what could be considered as running at KY, it's the worst experience ever. Driving with windows down is terrible, and riding a bike in the summer is just awful. Your love for bikes has to be greater than your discomfort for humid heat if you wear gear. In town I can only wear a helmet and some leather gloves, and hope my gf still likes me after I tear my skin of my arms and legs if someone rekts me.

so, where do you get your parts?
think I remember an anon saying that partzilla is pretty good and reasonably priced, but there was another site (maybe european) that had lower prices but higher shipping, so it was better if you were buying a lot of things at once (maybe it was a clothes site not a parts site though).

I was supposed to be at college but I was bunking off to go to a theme park
my scooter died on the way and I had to push it back to campus because my mum was going to kick me out if i missed any more lessons

I can't remember what was up with it, but I think I didn't put the tranny case back on right. The nut holding the flywheel on was rubbing against the cover, the nut wore down and the flywheel came off.
Made a proper mess and the nut had to be welded to a socket to get it off the crankshaft.
Good times.

Bro got too sketched out by that and didn't want to try again. Would have been better if I wasn't an idiot and just held the strap in the center.
>>
>>17592407
That sounds like a shit time m8. At least some parts of the route were downhill so I was able to just ride it down and use the built up momentum to push it with my right foot like a skateboard.

I had a bandit before this shit heap and I had to push that thing to a nearby tran station after I got into a crash. It took both my bro and I 1hr pushing it 3 km. The handlebars were proper fucked so it was hard to right the bike while pushing. Idk why I still ride bikes.

They're not infallible. I have a few friends who are committed Yamaha riders and, while the mechanicals are fairly solid, the finish doesn't last like my Hondas have.

A couple had to get trickle chargers because they weren't riding their bikes during the week while my bike started up after 3 months under a cover (neck injury) like the engine was still warm.

One way to bend rods, levers and pedals is to slide a crescent wrench over the lever as far from the pivot point as practical then twist the wrench using another wrench or visegrip or rod (you get the idea) until the bent item is straight enough to do its job.

I'd order a replacement for anything that's damaged but it's an old, effective method.

As far as trans work goes, it's usually cheaper to buy an engine that's still 100% good off a totaled bike and drop it in yourself (more like drop the frame onto the engine)

They normally run under 2 grand. Older, shittier bikes can run under a grand per working engine.
>>
>>17593425
Seems unlikely. Where I live, Ninja 250's are more common on CL than traps on /soc/, and yours predates the remodel that turned them from looking like 80's bikes into 10's bikes.

>>
>>17593386

Somebody tell me what to buy.

I think I want a 600cc class upright-ergo naked-bike sort of multicylinder motorcycle of some sort to motorcycle around on. I want something with mild off-road pretensions but not a V-Strom. The lighter and faster and cheaper, the better.

The market is saturated with similar types of motorcycles idk what the fuck to even start on. I currently ride a KLR and I love many things about it, but its slow as fuck.

Saw a guy on a Harley or something haul ass down a hill run a redlight and plow into some soccer mom's SUV on the driver's door. It was a yard sale. I don't typically blast down 45 mph zones with full throttle into people's cars, so it didn't really dissuade me.

Left turners are Satan's little helpers.
I've never seen a fatal motor cycle crash so I can't say how it would affect me, I treat every single car on the road as if it's going to try to kill me intentionally and have only had a few close calls due to phonedrivers merging without looking etc
>>
>>17593898
I used to hate it to, then one day it became incredibly good looking, like flipping a switch, and apparently this is how most people feel about them, so just wait for your day anon.

Most people are not trying to kill you. I hear that idea thrown around alot but I think it poorly prioritizes the things that should have your attention and situations that are more dangerous than others. Certain situations are dangerous, others are not.

Never ride next to cagers and be ultra-aware when you are approaching a left-turner and no other cagers are around.

Be real fucking careful stopped at night.

Don't ride slower than traffic, you are safest moving always slighter more aggressive and faster than all the other traffic around you. Ural and Harley riders beware of this. If you can't keep in the left-most lane at all times, you don't need to be on that road or on that slow of a bike.

Most other shit you can avoid because you're on a motorcycle, I feel like.

>>
>>17594005
You might be thinking of the New Mexico DMV handbook. Guns are illegal in California.

If I remember correctly, there is only one randomly generated question on the exam about it and the correct answer is to throw your NMDOT-approved ninja caltrops with an over the shoulder motion with your left hand before drawing your side arm with the same hand.

It's a little too hot for overpants, and a little too poor for outside kneepads, but I'm going to salve those bad boys up and see if that helps. I'm sure once the salve has worked its way to the pads, like a well-used skillet it will absorb the healing qualities.
>>
>>17594042
Whew, lad.

I'd start looking at prices for replacement gaskets and seals for your obscure obsolete sportbike.

If it's more than a couple hundred bucks, I'd ask around if some shop will fabricate them for you for cheaper.

Or if the repairs costs more than your bike, I'd just run it into the ground until it dies.

Went and took a look at this thing yesterday. Man, it's fucking gorgeous in person. Guy selling it works for microsoft and is crazy rich, just getting older and doesn't ride anymore. 2009 696 with only 3500 miles on it. He refused to sell it to me yesterday on the grounds that he insisted on taking it for a full service (fluids, valve and belt checks, brand new battery installation) before letting me take it. Didn't raise the asking price at all to compensate for the service.

I think it's kinda funny how I was considering buying an FZ07 just a few days ago for 6500, getting the monster for 5000 and the dude is even throwing in the white fairing set.

NM4 is cool. Vultus sounds like grimdark Evanescence fanboy tier.

(Pictured) is out for delivery right now. I've got a two-part.
First, how do I clean a bike? I've seen people at the spray wash, but they all had faired up sportbikes.
I've got an aircooled standard. Do I just not clean the engine? Wait three hours so it will cool?
Part two: Application tips for a tank pad? I don't think it will be hard to smooth, but I'm wondering if I should prepare the surface somehow...

It's funny you have your bike with the American mil-style paint on your murkan bike made in murka with it's underperforming and overpriced characteristics and you post here trying to make it sound like you are better or more murkan than those of us who ride other bikes (shots across the bow of the jap bikes in particular) and something occurs to me:

Do you know who William Deming is? Do you know what the Deming Prize is? Funny thing, post WW2 after murka decimated Japan we actually sent Americans to help them rebuild and better themselves. One of which was this man, William Edwards Deming. An American of astute pedigree; Deming received a BS in electrical engineering from the U of Wyoming at Laramie, an MS from the U of Colorado, and a PhD from Yale. Both graduate degrees were in mathematics and physics. He wrote books and philosophized in fields such as sampling techniques, and in general was a GOD when it came to efficiency and improvement procedures to better companies, products, and ultimately lives.

While murka sent Deming to Japan to help them relearn what was needed to have successful businesses with quality products, our own country was developing a different strategy, one I call the UNION, "Good Enough" philosophy.

How fucked up is it that while we sent an American to Japan to turn them into a powerhouse of innovation and industrial performance churning out quality products ultimately consumed more and more by Americans, American businesses were outright rejecting these core principles in favor of mediocrity?

This is what you represent Hardley Ableson rider, mediocrity. You talk about your murkan products when the true spirit of America was exported to JAPAN. And while Deming was largely neglected and ignored stateside people who knew better praised him for his high accomplishments and philosophies, even going so far as to honor him by founding a Deming Prize handed out to those companies who adhere to that TRUE AMERICAN SPIRIT.

FAGGOT
