Agree, but according to some sources, apparently there isn't a market for a two door SUV... I don't know if that's true or not.

If they do go with this, it's literally just going to be a body on frame Explorer that no one really asked for. Another unneeded midsize SUV imo.

Got the newly rebuilt rear-end with truetrac in today, it didn't go well. Mid way through the first drive, under moderate acceleration from a stop/through turns, something feels like it's binding up and sounds like grinding, only occasionally happens during the shift from first to second (TH350c). Ran out of time to fuck with it today, drove fine other than that happening, did it twice leaving a light in a straight line under moderate acceleration too.

>used conventional 80w90 without LSD additives
>let run on jackstands for ~10 minutes as per shops instructions
>went to parking lot and did mild figure 8's, drove home, let rear end cool before going for a second drive

Fuck.

fucked up 79 Trans am dude with another update. I did it, I bought a 400 block and it's currently being locally built by a family friend who builds motors for sprint cars. Long story short my dad talked to him and no joke he had an extra 400 block sitting around that was ready to build. Anyway, while I'm waiting on it I'd like to rust protect my trunk since It leaks pretty bad. Can someone help me pinpoint where it's leaking. Also is it too far gone for one of those POR15 floor pan restoration kits?

This is the worst and unfortunately it's probably in a really bad spot. I wonder if the por15 kit would be better than welding in this area since it's got some difficult angles plus I'm awful at welding.
>>
>>17592225
>>17592217
Look for where the rust goes, be it between panels, up above shit, or from a hole, it's getting in somewhere, all else fails get someone to hose the outside down, climb inside with a light and wait.

Don't just por15 that, get the grinder wheel out and start taking shit off, it's easier to patch it right once than it is to half ass it and then have to do it right later when it's gotten worse.
>>
>>17592248
Gotcha, I'm gonna have to learn how to weld floor pans soon enough so I might as well get some practice on something small like this. Surprisingly this car is pretty damn rust free aside from that area in the trunk. Also if anyone has a trunk light on their trans am could you provide pics of where it connects to? Mine is there but the wire has been snipped.

I replaced the accelerator pump on my truck and it still bogs down on acceleration. In park it has a bit of a miss when the gas pedal is hit but when put in drive if the gas pedal goes anywhere past 15% throttle the truck starts to bog down and die. It's got an electric fuel pump.

Some people say weld patches instead of the fiberglass but with a relatively small area like that could I get away with just the fiberglass? Later tonight I'll do the flashlight method.

>all K-series trucks have been beat to shit and will require a shitload of money to get back to drivable
>pool is even narrower because I want something pre-83 so I'm inspect exempt

>>
>>17594017
Either way works. I like fiberglass because there's less chance of leaving pin holes. I also have very limited access to a welder and I'm not very good with it.

With big holes like that it's important to use the wire mesh backing. Fiberglass over both sides, sand flat(ish), and paint both sides. You want to paint it very well because that bondo-glass compound is porous and will absorb moisture. The bondo glass is kind of clumpy and hard to get completely flat and molded exactly how you want it. So if there are any extra small spaces that need filled, you can use the straight body filler to fill it in.
>>
>>17593517
Rebuild the carb and change your fuel filter. It sounds like you have dirty jets.
>>
>>17594103
Thanks! I'm awful with a welder so I'll see how it works out. The other part that leaks is somewhere above the passenger side foot well. I've herd the F body kick panels can be problematic and cause that to happen. Once I get new seats I'm going to sound deaden and re do the carpet so I'll try to locate it then.
>>
I'm planning on giving my 1986 Bronco II Eddie Bauer edition a new paint job. But I don't know if I should keep the originial dark red & tan scheme.
I would love to have it painted on the Red-white-red other Bronco IIs have.

I already had the carb apart to replace the accelerator pump and it was clean inside. The fuel filter is new, and it can't be dirty gas because the gas tank has been cleaned, and the fuel filter is new. In fact it has 2 fuel filters, the one on the electric fuel pump and the regular one on the line.

If it's carbureted why does it have a fuel pump? Usually it's just vacuum.
Anyway, you float bowls could be messed up, jets could be not spraying as much, or getting a poor mixture of air and gas. Timing is another problem. I'm betting it's not timed right bud. If it's firing wrong that would explain the miss at idle and bogging under load. Hope this helps bud. Remember, I am an idiot just trying to help

The motor is a 460 from an RV. The mechanical fuel pump isn't being made anymore because Ford says fuck you so I had to go to an electric fuel pump. Only pushes 7 PSI. It idles perfectly fine but the moment you touch the gas pedal it bogs down a bit then takes off. The float bowls looked perfectly fine. It could be either tune or timing or both.

Not all, but then you're going back to the brass era. The most famous example would be the Model T, but many cars of the era used a pressurized or vacuum tank instead; some of which were primed by a hand pump. Other vehicles had individual bowls atop the cylinder that had to be filled and dumped into the cylinders to start the car.

There was supposedly some "inside information" that claimed it would be based off the aussie everest platform, but with removable roof and window panels. So going off that information, its highly possible it will be 4 door, but it could also be a 2 door. Ford still hasn't actually said anything.

On that note as well, mine is a 4 speed big block...it is a good feel my man.

My problem is I want a woman of comparable attractiveness that I can tolerate living with and hasn't had children yet.

Here's a fun ponderance; if you were given $50k to spend on a classic car, what would you buy?

Not repairing your own car, but you have to use the money to go out and buy one; you don't get to keep what's left, either.

Honestly my friend that whole floor looks like it needs to be cut out which means it's too far gone. You're probably going to spend triple what you paid for it in body work, before you even get your engine and tranny and since it's a challenger, whatever body shop you take it to will assume you're loaded and charge accordingly.

It will be an honest to God miracle if the fender wells don't have gaping rust holes in them, look at the pictures as well, the floor is wet, so until you get taken care of, it's going to rot out and these old Mopars leak from everywhere. It has also been crashed at least once. I can't tell from the pictures but judging the state of the trunk the rear quarters are rotting out as well.
I'm not trying to discourage you or anything but that $4000 is only the beginning with something like this. Transmissions aren't too bad to find. Mopar engines are getting harder to find though.
If you're going to look up the Vin, the sixth digit should be a 0 (zero).

>>
>>17595477
Damn, that sucks.I was always told you keep your first car. That's what my dad told me and my brother. My dad sold his first car which was a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner and always regretted it. You ever think of getting another 1978 Ford?
>>
>>17595710
I'm not going to buy that one, I'm more interested in a 2nd gen charger. I also have access to my grandpa's garage as he's probably done building cars forever. I also have access to all of his knowledge, he built a 550 hp 67 Chevelle that he drove daily for over a decade. He has welding and painting equipment. It's impossible to find a charger shell for less than 10k that doesn't require the entire body to be replaced. I'm also fine building the car over like 3 years.
>>
>>17595715

>>17596164
So if it's an SUV you want the GM squares always rusted out on the back windows. Water would get in and rot out the floors in pretty much the whole rear end. The trucks always rotted on the bed sides. As far as engine/wiring. Both are pretty simple. Stay way from 305s. You'll want a K10, 20, or 30. I can't speak for the Toyotas.
>>
>>17596191
One more thing: parts are dirt cheap for the 72-88 trucks. Rust? Buy a new floor pan for 50 bucks. They are cheap to own and the aftermarket is full of stuff
>>

I have stacks of those catalogues...
>>

Manual or Auto? I prefer manual but can go either way.

Yep you can get manuals in just about all configurations. Even in the SUVs. They would have 4 speeds. The automatics would have turbo 400s I think. Also in 87 they switched to gen 2 small blocks. stay away.

5. I found another 67 non SS for sale today that's way worse than mine and they want 5500 firm, so I still don't feel bad. Mine is, well, was driveable. Hopefully I can get it fixed this week.
>>
>>17596625
That's pretty good for an SS. I think your plate says Maine, do they use salt there? In Wisconsin it's extremely hard to find something without rust. What does it needed besides rear upper shock mounts?
>>
>>17596665

Yeah, I'm in Maine. The paint is single stage and leaves a lot to be desired, it has some fiberglass body work on the rear quarters, and it has a floor pan that was patched with a road sign, though it's actually quite solid and I have the replacement pan. The interior was completely redone and isn't terrible, but they used a 65 console for the 4 speed. It was a factory AC car and I have all the parts, but God only knows if I could get it to work. Overall it's a solid car, and with a year or two and maybe 8ish grand I could have it looking pretty cherry.

Despite all its flaws, this thing turns heads. I watched guys heads track me everywhere I go, and I've already had 3 chicks come lean in the passenger side window to tell me how great my car is, one of whom would have been burnt to a crisp if my wife had laser eyes. Chicks fucking love this car.
>>
>>17596721
So they took the Roadkill approach to fixing rusted floors. If I were making a rat rod that would be the perfect thing to do. If you can get the AC working that would be great for the value of the car. Are you going to keep it forever or until you get bored of it?

I'm on the "Everything classic GM" Facebook group and randomly had a guy from Iowa offer my 10k for it yesterday, even after I listed the issues he said he was willing to pay 10 if I'd sell it. He already had a 67, but wanted a true SS model. I turned him down. I'm going to keep it for a while, although I'll admit the biggest thing bugging me now is how the fuck I'm going to make a Saginaw 4 speed work with a 67 console once I find one.

Roadkill approach is right, at one point this car was roached. The restoration was complete, but less than quality. Most of my work will be redoing/refining the work that has already been done.

supernatural fans are the worst, imo. "IMPALA!!!!! XDDDD I WANT ONE!!!!"

but yeah man, four doors are still the same. just look at roadkill's crew cab chevelle. they accept the same parts as 2 doors. my old man's looking at a 73 chrysler imperial a few towns over that's been sitting in this dude's driveway for forever. i told him that it needs a big ol 440 and a 4 speed. stealth mode four door that blows shit away. i feel the same way with my car (except the speedo doesn't work since it's engine/trans swapped unfortunately. i would like to convert it back to a carbed 350 and turbo 350.) but the glow of the dash and cruising is the best feeling. you just don't get that same feel driving an econobox

Sweet Jesus. My advice is: invest in an ozone generator. You will need it even if you replace every part of the interior.
>>
>>17597369
Yup that's the plan, doesn't need much of anything for a safety so it'll be on the road as soon as i get my seats redone.
>>
>>17597389
Is it that bad?

I was just planning on replacing all the mouse eaten parts, disinfecting the rest and using some stronger chemical to clean up all the metal.
>>
>>17597423

Yes. It's nearly impossible to get the smell out without one. Best you'll ever do is have a car that smells like whatever air freshener you like plus mouse piss and shit, which will make you hate your favorite air freshener. I bought an ozone generator from Amazon for $70 and it works wonders. I've run it a total of 8 hours, 2 hours in the cabin and 2 in the trunk twice and the smell is completely gone. I only ran it twice because I found a nest in the back seat after I read it the first time and cleaning the nest out stirred up a new smell.
>>
>>17597455
Damn. alright then, another thing to add to the ever growing list of things I need to buy. good thing I have a solid job.

Current car goal is to make 25mpg highway, so I can actually drive my car more than once a week without killing my wallet and also so I can actually drive home without setting me back a few hundred dollars each trip.
Aka new engine rebuild, new transmission, and probably committing a sin by switching to fuel injection. Hell I might as well put in a tac and fix my gauge cluster so it actually works when I'm at it.

Yeah they pretty much only go back together one way. But you should take lots of photos to be sure.

Oh and carb kits usually come with several different gaskets for different variants of the same carb. So watch that, and try to match the new gasket with the old one.
Of course, it's not always possible to take the old gasket off whole. In that case, you need to pay special attention to all the little vacuum passages and make sure they're open on the new gasket.

Of course, once you have it back together, check that the throttle opens and closes freely. You really wouldn't want it to stick open lol

tl;dr use your brain and you'll be fine.

Truetrac's don't have clutches in them, they're gear on gear internals. Eaton recommends plain ass gear oil, no synthetics, and most reviews complaining of performance of them either used synthetic, or used a gear oil with LSD additives.

Upon further testing, pretty sure the what was perfectly fine TH350 is shitting the bed. Truck shudders on hill stops under any moderate throttle, and rear end makes the noise I was hearing. Throw it into first instead of drive, and you can put it to the floorboard without issue.

Jesus christ. I'm so glad almost all of the wiring on my truck is in tact. Different story for the Fury... Why are people so terrible with wiring? When I first went to see the truck it wouldn't start because the battery was obviously ded, but the guy insisted it was a bad connection. I think so? I popped the inner door panel off and you can see into the door cavity where it's dented if you roll up the window. I would try and pop it out with a 2x4 or my jack handle, but I can't seem to find either of those at the moment. It's in a bit of an odd place so I can't get at it with a hammer.
>>
>>17603225
You can get door skins but would have to have a body shop put it on. Or rockauto has the whole door shell for 140. Try using a 2x4 and a hammer at the end of that.
>>
>>17602281
This car has without a doubt some of the most hackery I've ever seen done to the wiring. I can't help but laugh and cringe at some of what I've found.

This guy knew just enough to be dangerous. I can forgive the wire nuts, the vampire connectors everywhere, I thought that was the worse of it, but then I started seeing the little segments electrical tape everywhere.

Fucking guy must have got a brilliant idea one night while he was chopping shit up,"wait a minute, I don't need connectors I'll just tape the wires together". Found atleast 10 of his creations so far. The one above at the ignition was truly his finest though.

I would buy a new wiring harness but I'm too cheap so gonna make it work in the mean time.

So, I'm tackling odd jobs around the Bronco, and one thing I noticed when doing my oil pump was that the timing chain was stretched. Didn't measure the slack, but it was enough to cause me some concern. It's an 89 with the 302. How much of a massive pain in the ass is it to replace the timing chain, roughly how long would it take a single person with basic hand tools to do, and should I even consider doing it if I'm planning on dropping a new engine in there in a year or two?

Externally, it's a beautiful car; behind the wheel, it's boring. The gauges are the worst of all the GM offerings that year and the ride is virtually indistinguishable from a Chevrolet.

I did the timing chain on my bronco because I was already doing a water pump and everything was off. It can be a pain on an old car like that. Mine had slack so I replaced it and drove a couple hundred miles. Then my fuel pump shit the bed. I'm a machinist. I used a tax return and a profit sharing check to go to AZ to visit family and purchase this truck. I needed a driver and wasn't about to buy one in NY because of rust. The truck looks great but need a lot of mechanical attention. I'm better with engines and trannys than I am with body, so I got one with a good body. I picked it up for $2500 plus tires and exhaust. I drove it back to NY, so add gas to the price and a hotel room (I have friends across the country, where I can stay). Three day drive back. I used all my vacation. This was April, '16.

That is actually basically 100% the plan. Depending on how things go, I may build the two engines to be identical, or use the block I have in there presently as a higher powered version, or (unlikely) sell it off to recoup some of the funds from building a new engine.

Switching to electronic ignition fixed everything.. It's never run this good, it's like a whole new motor

Does yours have automatic choke? If it does, check and see if it's failed, leaving the choke on indefinately. The symptoms you are giving sounds exactly like what my 78 did to me. Heat tube from the block to the carb completely sealed itself with carbon, and no feasible way for me to fix it. So, I put a manual choke cable on, and fixed the problem. Good luck buddy, and sorry I'm a bit late

In other news, got to meet the owner of one of the only other gen 1 brats in spokane county! His is an *absolute* POS though, but just more evidence that mine is legitimately the nicest around.

The.... 'interior'

>no steering wheel face
>dash assembly is nonexistent
>heater core and blower motor are simply strapped down to a mess of 2x4s bolted to the firewall
>no carpet or flooring of any kind
>seats have been to hell and back
>aftermarket radio is bolted to the bottom of his heater setup... has antique computer speaker hanging from the firewall
>gauges are balanced on the steering column

Still, it is driving around... and with how shit these boxer 1.6L engines are, I have to give him credit...

Got the car back from the mechanic finally, dash lights/gauges still don't work, but the blinkers do. He also left bracket for the emergency brake loose and tried to blame me for it. Even though my brother and me confirmed that was not the case, he fixed it but probably never bringing it back to him for repairs, 3 weeks and 780 for for blinkers fuck that.

Also the door panels arrived so I placed the drive side set on., along with the arm rests. Will put the rest on tomorrow, and apparently my carpet will come in tomorrow as well so I might have some cool before and after pictures to post here soon.

Armrests where original, just took off the chrome cleaned them up with soap and water, gave them a light sanding and used this on them https://www.onlinefabricstore.net/rust-oleum-fabric-and-vinyl-gloss-blue-.htm?gclid=Cj0KCQjw--DLBRCNARIsAFIwR25ldQ4BBEuDKQk40M6269d4s0_qB5__suyJ5_MKIv83Iazl_BXzXXkaAlIsEALw_wcB

As for the panels, couldn't find any original style for under 300 bucks, so I got these from this guy https://www.ebay.com/i/263107433697?chn=ps&dispItem=1

Came out great, which reminds me need to go post a review, and give a 5 star rating love em.
