71 Valiant, and yeah, apparently its almost bottomed out....today I'm gonna try jacking the car and loosening that bolt, hopefully I can slide it back to correct position. (Hopefully it WON'T have a lot of damamge, I'm pretty sure it's been that way since I got it a year ago)

I like the car and im gonna keep working on it, but im starting to realize that the 50s cars were just too slow for me. I got spoiled with my 66 dart that could atleast go on the highway.

Am i unreasonable for wanting $3500 for it?

Pros: pretty solid body, rebuilt flathead and trans, new carb, electronic points/ignition/fuel pump, new plugs and wires, 12v conversion, all lights work, gauges work, original interior/rims/hub caps, overhauled brakes.

Cons: rust in fender, driver window needs replacing, locks dont work, needs paint, needs new tires, needs speedo cable, gas tank needs to be cleaned and hooked up, and needs door pannels.
>>
>>17611392
Same dude, Has anyone ever installed one of those "vintage air" ac and heat units? They look kinda cool. Plus since all my ac stuff including the box in the engine bay has been taken out it might be easier to install one of these rather than piece together an oem unit.
>>
Anon with that 280 again. I thought I had it sold almost then the guy texted me today with:

>definitely still interested, but I have some bills I need to pay
k-k-kill me
FUUUUU
>>
>>17612868
>50s cars are too slow
It's because you bought one with an anemic flathead v8 that's already at its limit for reliable power and then coupled it with a body too heavy for the engine
>>
>>17613356
^this, sorry dude but he's not wrong
>>
>>17613356
>>17613367

Ya... but it sounds nice... and the engine is almost worth what i paid for the car.

I got offered a rusted to shit c10 and a 63 Polara (4 door) with a 318, but the guy stanced the shit out of it. Guess ill just keep hoping some boomer will want it.

Honestly i love the car, just wish an OD wasnt so expensive. Honestly its a great drivable project.

And of course the moment i put mine up for sell, a few others all pop up. Theyre either shells for 2500 or restored ones starting at 12k, going up to 30k.
>>
>>17612868
>Am i unreasonable for wanting $3500 for it?
I think so.

You've got a Ford 2 door sedan that doesn't have any desirable qualities beyond being old and also needs everything. If it had been at least a hardtop in a desirable model, or a Chevy, you might've been in the ball park. As it is I think that if you can get $2K for it you take the money and run.
>>
>>17613442
I don't know if 3500 is a good price keep in mind it's not a hardtop and it's not a shoebox Ford and not a later 55+. It falls somewhere in a grey area. It's neither here nor there.
>>
>>17613447
Well, thats like your opinion man. But thanks for the input
>>

Because by the time they came out with the 350's Trans Am's weren't a thing and nobody bought them anymore.

Just buy a 305 slowmobile and 350 swap it. Even if you found one of the few 350's left the engine would probably be getting tired by now anyway.

a lot of them are well worn, I got lucky with mine. Turns out it's got all the WS6 parts on it (bigger swap bar, 4wheel disk, and factory ratchet shifter) Anyway, my 403 was hopped up a little with a new intake and headers plus I tuned it up pretty decent. Still slow tho, stock these are better cruisers than muscle cars but they are fun to drive. I love wrestling the car through turns on windy roads or even just cursing down the highway they ride pretty smooth for an older car. If you've never driven a classic car before you'll be surprised with how much attention you'll get. Like no joke at gas stations you'll meet a lot of new people. My ex girlfriend hated the attention because people asked her all the time about the car and she was totally not into cars lol

Can't wait to get a little more work done on her. What a great ride. When the shock mounts broke, I replaced the air shocks with regular shocks, and I think it rides a lot better. The new wheels eliminated the shimmy she had at highway speed. New exhaust and a tune up and I think she'll be good until I get into some heavier shit this winter

Thanks man.

I love your truck, and the slant 6 is a great motor. I loved tinkering with mine in the 65 Dart I had. That engine was used by Chrysler from the 60s until 1984. That's a pretty good run.

I took the International for a spin the other day and it ran so good, sounded great with the new exhaust. It really pains me to sell her, but I just don't have the room. Maybe I'll rent a storage unit for the winter if she doesn't sell.
>>
>>17616192

Thank you. Yeah, I just got back to work this week after being out for 2 months with 3 herniated discs, sciatica, numbness and weakness. It sucked. This is just lower back pain tonight, guessing it's weather related, but I've been charging port hard at work and having been out for two months has got be a lot softer than I was when I went out.

1948 MG TC
Frame up resto
haven't done much for a while but its slowly marching forward I think

Question: should I choose one of the original colors, none of which I really like, especially not for that year, or should I just say "fuck the collector's value" and paint it the color I want?
>>
>>17616206

Follow your heart, bro. I went with a different color for my Impala and glad I did. It's my car, collectors and purists can fuck off.

>>17616205

I wouldn't pay 10k for a truck without a proper bed. Just my opinion.
>>
>>17616228
Some make purists don't give a fuck about colors. I know for Oldsmobile Club of America judged events as long as the color of your car was offered by Oldsmobile that year you can't lose any points for it. You also however lose points for not having a fire extinguisher or not wearing enough Oldsmobile Swag. I imagine MG guys would have a similar outlook
>>
>>17616205
Nah fuck that you can get a almost halfway decent one of that year for $2000 from some rednecks and have it painted up however you like and have the original bed.
>>
>>17616205

>>17616205

I can definitely see a whole ton of work put into the truck, but why he rebuilt this specific truck is beyond me.

>3/4 tons hold less value, everyone wants half tons because they are the best cruising truck
>inline 6 is a nice engine but a chevy V8, especially a big block will always be worth more
>manuals aren't desired or very fun to drive in old trucks
>modern buckets look out of place
>that wood flatdeck takes a ton of value away from the truck, finding a rust free bed and restoring it will cost thousands

I think you can find something that you'll like more and that's a better investment for 10k.
>>
>>17616237
Probably has something to do with the tendency of Oldsmobile owner's not to be turbo-autists about cars because they actually care about them. Although putting a Chevy engine in vintage olds will probably get you shot

I've got a question that's been on my mind for a while now. I'm a torquelet and haven't driven something with a lot of torque hard. What would happen if you totally floored it from a stop in a car with >300ft/lbs of torque? I know the wheels would spin like crazy, but would you actually lose control of the car?

Pontiac engine question, I bought one of those Hi torque mini starters for my 79 trans am. I'm swapping motors from 403 to 400 but is the starter compatible with both? they're both 166 tooth flexplates so they should be interchangeable right?

I've got baby moons on for now until i find some 67 dog dishes. I agree with you on the paint, i said i would, but I've been a lot more careful with the 65 since i had it painted. I already dropped a clamp on the passenger side rear door and left a millimeter sized mar. I guess it's hard to avoid that feeling after you invest a few grand in your car. I will have to have at least the passenger rear quarter color matched, i ordered the patch panel last night. It's got some crappy fiberglass work that a dog decided to chew on.

I absolutely agree. It will be getting all new exhaust from headers to rear bumper as soon as I've got the cash. Went and saw my exhaust guy today and offered my old wheels (all six) and tires as a sort of barter for the work and he bit. So now i just need to find out when it's happening.

Funny thing is, when i told the seller about all the issues i was going to have to fix, he got a pained look on his face when i mentioned the exhaust. He must have done it up himself, and it looks it, incomplete welds, clamps, leaky, and obnoxiously loud.
>>
Since some were comparing engines earlier, how about the 390 version of the FE block? Seems like it has potential but is choked by stock heads/manifolds being anemic even with 4 barrel carb, but what are your thoughts?

I've also heard that its intake manifold is much wider than usual, so gets an unusually good weight savings if swapping in an aluminum one.

Pic related is not the car's original engine, but it is an S-code car, so I don't wanna do a swap or anything, but I would like it to work a little better before I take it on the road.

>>17622264
If you have a soldering gun, use that to melt holes into it where bolt holes are, instead of cutting. Much easier, that's the only advice I can give
>>
>>17622264
Get the carpet trimmed and placed correctly. Get a straight pick, heat it red hot with a torch. Stick it through the center of the bolt holes from the bottom side of the car. Get a hole saw of proper size and drill out the carpet...this is a two stage process if you have insulation on the bottom. Drill the first time with the drill bit in the center to make the hole. Then take the bit out and use just the circular part of saw to finish cutting through the insulation.

Thats how I did my bronco and ot worked well.

Can anyone recommend a book on the math of making power in V8 engines? Whenever I research builds it's always nonspecific crap like "it needs to breath more" or "more carb." Surely there's a calculable optimum for these numbers? I'd like to build up my 318 but I'm not sure where to even begin to understand the interaction of the various components.
>>
>>17625906
The secret for a 318 is to throw 360 parts at it until you get the HP you want.
I can give you the quick and dirty which is more air=more fuel=more power. I know you already know this though. What sort of build are you going for to begin with?

>>
>>17625976
>The secret for a 318 is to throw 360 in it's place

ftfy.

The 318 is Mopar's equivalent to the 305 and has the same issue with bore shrouding of the valves reducing airflow and therefore top end power. The 340 has a large enough bore to make avoid that and the 360 is larger still.

>>17626099
>moar cam

That's the Chevy answer but I'm not convinced on a SB Mopar. The old style heads are right down there with a Windsor Ford in terms of flow. More cam on such a head ends up meaning it runs poorly down low and doesn't pay off with any power up top because no flow.

Not that I've ever heard. Factory 318 bore size is 3.91 and 340 is 4.04. that's a pretty big jump on what should be a modern thin-wall casting so I'm betting not.

Oh and I made a mistake earlier, the 340 has the largest bore size in that line at 4.04. The 360 is 4 inches even.

318s were never "thin wall casts". Jumping .13 is insanity though and i wouldn't try it.

As much compression as you can get. Stroke is more effective than bore. Ported heads/big valves. Ported intake manifold. Headers. Massive fucking cam.

I'm not going paint it...yet..ish. At least not at this point, until I'm out of an apartment complex. I don't want to be worrying about my expensive body and paint work. I'd like to have a place to put the truck first.

Once I have a house, I'll revisit the idea. But for what the truck is, it doesn't look terrible anymore now that it's been scrubbed.

But there's also the issue of offroading. That truck won't see much of it, but for when it does go off road, I'm going to be afraid of messing it.

Also, if anyone wants a '73 240Z, I'm selling mine... I know I'm asking a little much but honestly I'm half hoping no one will buy it, it's such a beautiful car. But it's also my farthest from being on the road. I'd probably make a better deal with you guys, I know a lot of posters are in TX.

Nice Zcar! I have an '82 that I've been trying to sell that looks worse than yours. A shame yours is a salvage title :/
>>17629105
A trailer? You can rent a truck if you don't have one.
>>
>>17629105
Take the hood off
>>
>>17629795
That probably won't help cooling at all and may just make it cool worse. A car is designed to have a hood on and it's designed to have air flow a certain way.
>>
>>17629899
Taking the hood off creates a negative pressure zone inside the engine bay, effectively making it overheat even more. Or so I've been told. Roadkill and Top Gear claim to have cooled an engine down by removing the hood, so I really don't know.
>>
>>17629899
On old cars, and my truck in particular, warm air builds up in the engine bay and doesn't flow out well. There's a significant heat reduction when I have had the hood off.

Furthermore, the dude will be stuck in traffic. He won't be going fast enough to create negative pressure.

Not sure of any book that covers that topic because I don't really read that subject material. What i can tell you is that Engine Masters is pretty good for describing some theoretical aspects to making power and there are some Roadkill Extras that go into technical details about some engines and whatnot. I kind of just learned all piecemeal.

I've given up that idea, but, I'm lusting after a '68 Cadillac convertible pretty badly.

I could trade the Excalibur and come out $10,000.00 ahead.

Third gen firebird with a 350 tpi. Changed my oil today, when i took off the filter the piece that it screws in to came with it. It screwed back in and I got it tightened, I have good oil pressure and evreything seems okay. I think this was probably just caused by the PO overtightening the filter, anyone else with this car/engine ever have this problem? Something I should worry about? Once I screwed the piece that came out back in and tightened it everything seemed to be in order, but I haven't had this car for long so i'm no expert.
>>
>>17631756
Not uncommon. I used to have that happen to me often when I did oil changes on VWs
>>
>>17631769
I'm assuming it would be extremely not good to loctite it in place. I doubt it would happen again at this point since I plan to do the oil changes myself, but is there any extra precaution I should take?

It's a 1978 Series III Phaeton SS with just a tad over 80k miles; not that you'd know it. It's got a lightly tweaked 454 and, while a little rough around the edges, has the soft top, hard top, tonneau top, and all,the side curtains.

It's insured for $35,000.00 and worth around that, but I have roughly $25,000.00 into it.

Hello everybody...... Does anybody have any good ideas in going about giving away solid body mount bushings for my T/A I don't need them because I put in polyurethane ones in, they are from pro-touring F-body and I'd love to pass them on in good faith, I have no need for them and it's to late to return ten..... TL:DR. I have some extra solid aluminum body bushings for fbodys and I want a creative way to give em away to my fellow /o/ ccg goers
