Used ducati (they can be seriously cheap because nobody wants to buy an out of warranty ducati), and put the rest away in investment funds that mature as the maintenance intervals come.

I've got a relative who did that. 899 panigale, about 50k miles on it. Ended up not using half the maintenance money because he put away extra for random failures.
>>
Ok /dbt/

Lets get some opinions goin' here. As the resident asshole oldguy who has owned it all... I'm buying a new bike. My 1198SP got totalled two years ago and I've been getting by with just my KTM Duke, but I need a fairing so I can go the distance comfortably. Being a sail in the wind sucks.

I'm real close to pullin the trigger on an MV F3 800. Rode the Brutale 800, and it manged to assuage my fears of owning an MV; since I and my buddy have had. bad. experiences.

So what I need to know is... do I get it in black over red, or white and black over red?

I'm sorry.

I didn't ask if you took care of your shit. I asked how much maintenance you are willing to do. KTMs require a lot more attention than a DRZ.

Buy a KTM or another DRZ. You have practically no other options. The 690 does not require the same level of maintenance as a 450 or 500. The 525 RFS motor is well known to be quite reliable, however the 690 is a much better street bike.

>>
>>17584287
I have an RFS KTM. It's a great bike but I still wouldn't want one as an only bike because the miles rack up quick on the street. I used it a lot on the street for a while but it just wasn't worth the hassle or money to use it as a street bike so it spends almost all its time on the trails now.

>>17584350
Bang for your buck is a DRZ in california. In other states, I'd say a plated WR450f. If you buy a KTM, you're committing to more frequent maintenance and stupid shit like changing 3 oil filters at once and laying the bike on its side for an oil change.

For something more modern, consider a WR250R or X, depending on preferences. I think a DRZ is a better bargain though.
>>
>>17584401
>>17584380

its not made to be raced yes.

If you are a somewhat decent rider you will still be able to keep up with the liters on the twisties.
>>
>>17584409
>my KTM is just as reliable and requires infrequent maintenance, just like the DRZ400 boat anchor

No but when compared to another bike in the same class like a WR450F, it requires about the same amount of maintenance.
>>
>>17584423
The only KTM that is close to the 5 valve WR450f is an RFS KTM with its 3 oil filters and on-its-side oil changes.

How do you get girls to get on your bike? Is driving with a passenger on a sportbike difficult? First year rider btw so I´m not 100% confident in my riding, more like 80-85%
>>
>>17583878

>>
>>17584434
It is only 2 oil filters unless you count the screens. The WR has oil screens too but you just don't see them when you change the oil. You can even replace one of the paper filters with a reusable mesh filter if it's that big of a deal. Also no, you don't have to turn the bike on its side to change the oil.

Btw, the WR426, which comes from the same era as the RFS bikes, is complete garbage by comparison.
>>

>How do you get girls to get on your bike?

>Is driving with a passenger difficult

>Not 100% confident in riding
Do it if you want mane. If you fall they're gonna get torn up tho.
>>
>>17584350
When you are talking "like the DRZ but faster " you are looking at pure enduros or the 690.

Pure enduros, change oil every 500 miles, check valves every 2k or so IF you keep the air filter spotless until you know they aren't moving because you are doing your job maintaining the bike, then every 5k. KTM is pretty much the only game in town. You can play the game to plate other bikes, kind of a pain but doable. Still quite a few plated non factory bikes available but expect to pay a 1k premium on anything that is hard to plate in California. 40-70 lbs lighter than your DRZ, 10 to 20 more HP

690, stay with recommended oil intervals of 3k miles, swap rocker arms every 10k when you check the valves. about the same weight as your DRZ, 25 more HP.
>>
>>17584070
About $9700 with 16k miles.
>>
>>17584363
RFS is a good motor, easy to maintain and yes you will stack hours on anything if it's something you ride.

Put 350 hours on a RFS supermoto in a little over a year only riding it one day a weekend. They stack up fast.

Notice how I didn't mention the 426?

WR450s for the same vintage as the RFS have in-frame oil tanks and screens. Aluminum frame bikes don't have one.

You can buy a fuel injected WR450f for the same price as a GOOD RFS. That's what I did.

My bike also has a reusable screen oil filter. I'm not crazy about the idea.

Pic related.

Having to brake 28 meters earlier to hit your line on a track is the same as having to brake 28 meters earlier to not fucking die on the road.

There's something to be said about having a bike with good braking distances. Fucking econoboxes outclass most bikes. ABS equipped middleweight supersports are the only bikes to even fall in the same bracket as cheap family cars, while sportscars stop on a dime and laugh at the bikes that are still rolling on down the road.

>>17584513
>Having to brake 28 meters earlier to hit your line on a track is the same as having to brake 28 meters earlier to not fucking die on the road.
>i ride as fast on the street as I do on the track
No, you don't.

With that said, ABS is nice.
>>
I thought about buying a VFR800 since I had a 750 and liked it, but apparently it has some sort of linked braking system. Is it good or awful?
>>
>>17584522
>i ride as fast on the street as I do on the track

100kmh (that's 62 miles an hour in freedom numbers) is the average speed of my daily commute, city slicker.

>>17584524
The rear activates the front. It's shit. Modern honda sportsbikes with CBS at least keep the rear isolated.

>inb4 it's a "sports tourer" because honda doesn't want to drive the price up another five grand with lightweight racey components
>>
>>17584507
anything that covers up the engine is shit anyways.

i fucking hate those bellypans, they only work if the rest of the bike is almost completely naked.

Radiator covers always look bad.
>>
>>17584536
i like bellypans. they let you go on tracks with half decent safety rules, keep dirt off your engine and headers (add a fender extender for more clean bike cred) and save your rear tire from spontaneous leaks.
>>
>>17584533
Yeah doesn't sound so good to me either. It's a shame really, I could buy another 750 but I'd have preferred fuel injection.
>>
>>17584533
The highways here are posted 75mph, I still go quite a bike faster than that on the race track.
>>
>>17584524
Linked brakes are designed for people who don't know how to brake and just mash their favorite lever until the bike slows down.
>>
>>17584557
And shitty brakes at 75mph make a huge difference in safe following distance. And keep in mind, it's traffic, so nobody will let you have all of that following distance. Ever. After all, their car brakes 50 feet sooner than your "sensible" bike. Why would they accomodate your choice to take a shitty vehicle into the fast lane when you might dent their trunk at the worst?
>>
>>17584524
Linked brakes always sounded like compensation for those who can't walk and chew gum, but if
>>17584533
That makes the bike nearly unuseable.
The rear has a real purpose, doubly so at low speed. If it does activate the front, rip that shit right off.

Otherwise, the 800 sounds badass. And the new one looks like sex.
>>
>>17584511
>You can buy a fuel injected WR450f for the same price as a GOOD RFS

Yep, I gave 4600 for my 2012 with 730 miles on it about a year and a half ago. All in to plate it in California playing the game with a non resident plate through SD then transfer back was an extra 500 for parts/fees/taxes.

Having had both an RFS and the WR, the WR is the better bike. the 12 and up forks on the WR are sublime.
>>
>>17584570
>tfw you crashed a VFR800 trying to do a moderate speed U turn in a gravel parking lot using the rear brake

bike was okay
ego was not

went out to a paved parking lot and did the same thing five times over, bike stayed perfectly upright

and to think, adventure bikes come with that shit.
>>
how to lean?
>>
>Tfw almost got into an accident today because some old bitch decided to just pass me on the right, through most of my lane, without warning.
>Didn't see her until suddenly there's a Corolla a foot to my right, nearly clipped me
Fuck everybody. We were going 100km/h, I would have gotten absolutely fucked up.
>>
>>17584579
Also, this was after owning a regular bike that didn't fall over in gravel. It might have also been the weight, but fuck if those things aren't poorly suited to anything but highways.
>>
>>17584606
You countersteer and the bike starts to lean, then you lean into it.
It's not about just muscling the bike over.
>>
>>17584579
There are conversion kits for the older bikes, like the vfr800... to get rid of it and make it conventional.

With all the new computer control, cant really do that. Unless some companies have gotten around to hacking the ecus and abs systems...
>>
>>17584616
is it fear that prevents me from hanging off?
>>
>>17584632
maybe its dignity?
>>
>>17584635
>>
>>17584627
The conversion kits that actually work instead of giving you too much brake everywhere are basically half front end swaps and a bridge hose+new MC for the rear. Apparently just doing the fork lowers and matching brake calipers from a VTR or F4i actually works, but the fender doesn't fit. And then you have to run entirely new lines from the new front MC to the two new front calipers, and they have to be custom made because the distances and clearances on the VFR aren't found on the bikes you're swapping brakes from.

Altogether it's at least a $500 expense for a 20 year old bike when you could just get an F4i or something. The v4 memes aren't worth it.

Test rode some Suzukis at an event today, was pretty interesting. the SV650 felt smooth, torquey, and handled great. However, it was extremely quiet (I could barely hear it even after I opened my visor) and the rear brake felt like it had no fluid in it whatsoever. I don't need a bike to be screaming loud, but I don't like looking down at a tach to tell what rev range I'm in because I can't fucking hear anything. Rear brake isn't all that useful, but I needed to come to a faster stop at one point because it was my first ride of the day and I didn't know the route, came up to a sharp corner too fast. I went to push on the rear brake and for a moment through I just missed the pedal because I felt nothing and the bike didn't respond in any noticable way. Tested it later in the ride and confirmed it was doing absolutely nothing.

Also rode a Gixxer 750, felt pretty damn good. Steering dampening is on point and it felt extremely, extremely smooth. Power band was solid and was just an outright fun ride. I'm not particular to sport bikes, but it definitely left a smile on my face.

Last was the Vstrom 1000XT and it was garbage in my eyes. First bike of that type I rode ever and I absolutely hated it. Could feel how heavy it was, the throttle was unresponsive to the point where blipping downshifts was impossible, I would rotate the throttle and it'd take what felt like a quarter of a second for the engine to respond. Shifting was clunky, I would give it a solid flick up and still manage to just get stuck in neutral when going from 1st to 2nd. Didn't help that the clutch felt inconsistent with a friction zone that didn't kick in until the lever was almost entirely pulled in. I suppose most of those issues could be adjusted, but it was just an extremely unpleasant ride and felt like I couldn't throw the bike around. I've ridden my friend's R1 and I can flick that around despite the weight, the Strom just felt like a huge immobile turd.

A guy e-mails me and says he wants to know how to take his rear wheel off but can't figure out how and he has no shop manual 'cause money's tight. Then he asks what aftermarket exhaust system will give him the most horsepower. He doesn't have money for a $30.00 shop manual, but does have money for a $300.00 exhaust system. 2005 GSX600F will stall in 1st when I have the clutch pulled in and letting go of throttle trying to let it idle at say a stoplight or something, but idles just dandy in neutral. I just ran some Sea Foam through it today and have cleaned the carbs before but this problem has persisted since I bought it two months ago. Any ideas? Should I be in neutral every time I stop? I'm pretty new to this sort of thing but as far as I know this isn't normal.

>>17586245
Not sure what I should do to it then. It does it even when it's all warmed up. To be fair I only paid $1200 for it but still most of what I've seen from it were really trivial fixes. Like a loose hose on the petcock, but this still bugs me that it's a thing. It seems to make it easier to stall when I go from stopped cause not enough throttle, and harder to take off without going wide ass open.

fix it and commute for years on it, lanesplitting and parking where you damn please while other 'tards are spending tens of thousands on new corollas with half the character and many times the expense just so they can commute with one of the five seats used up (most of the time). .
>>
>>17586323
my mate told me a story, they needed to do some welding on a fuel tank. They drained the tank for a long period of time and put a cork in it. Apparently there was vapour left remaining. They commenced welding where it exploded and the cork flew across the room like a bullet, embedding itself in the wall.
My mate reckons that pros actually fill up the tank with a fluid to prevent combustion.
>>
>>17586445
It will still be flammable, but especially if your bike is fuel injected it wont leak enough fuel vapor just sitting there to really be a fire hazard. Still wouldnt want to keep it in the furnace room, but should be safe enough.

for fuck sake run normal mirrors. Bar end mirrors are usually worse than useless and make your bike wider (harder to lane split).
No mirrors just makes your bike look ugly and you look very silly. Even more silly if you end up crashing which is always on the cards.

1987 650cc jap cruiser as my first bike? Or should I just slit my wrists now? I'm not looking looking to ride aggressively or race, just commute and have some power available to me. I know how to drive manual and have been on a 400cc dual sport before and killed it my first time, I just didn't feel comfortable about the ride height, hence the cruiser idea. What are my chances of getting busted/towed if I ride at night with only my permit?

I'd love to practice during the day, but we get up to 115F basically every single day by 10:00 AM. It's just infeasible to be outside for any amount of time and not die. By the time it cools down below 100, it's already dark. I kind of don't have a choice if I ever wanna git gud.

>Back in 1981, 3 of us set off from England for a 2-week touring ride around mainland Europe. I was on my T150V Triumph Trident and the other 2 had Z1000 Kawasakis. Before departing, giving more thought to the fact that we would only be away from home for 2 weeks rather than the fact that we would be putting in some serious mileage, one of the guys decided that with a fairly worn rear drive chain, he would remove a link to provide more adjustment should he need it. 5 days and 2500 miles later in Athens (yes, Greece!) the photograph shows the result. As you can imagine, the last 300 miles or so, were only achieved by tightening the chain to provide friction drive with what was left of the sprocket. Indeed, such was the strain on the chain, that the rollers had flats worn on them by the time we arrived at our final holiday destination.

Cables on a bike is thin and designed for a specific ampere. If you keep adding stuff you hopefully burn a fuse or in worst case the wiringloom. If you want to use the ignition, wire in a relay and add a new fuse.

Is there a difference between US spec and European spec motorcycles?

I'm a besatzungstruppen here in Germany and I have an old shitty KLR650 as my beginner bike from 3 years ago, it has refused to die but It's too slow to accelerate at higher speeds and it's brakes are way too shitty to safely take on the autobahn, imo.

I'm thinking of buying a more street-oriented bike here, a used one, but I need something I can take back to the states. There are no dirt roads to speak of in Germany so the KLR is kinda pointless. They even pave the damn logging trails and firebreaks here.

yes because these days you got better alternatives, back then you wanted to go fast you had to take a UJM and add a cowl, clip ons, remove the rear-seat and move the pegs to the back.

Its not like you could just buy a racing replica and those guys didnt ride for style reasons.

I don't care about "the culture"
