Would this be a good bike to daily as a supermoto and occasionally ride in dirt trim? I know the DRZ400 is the "standard" sumo, but is this example too old to make a solid, reliable dual-sport/supermoto?

Also, if you were to offer a 2006 SV650S with ~10,500 on the clock for this DRZ, how much (if any) cash would you ask for on top of the trade?

Who makes the best "sport bike"?

Kawasaki Ninja 300r
Honda CBR 300r
Yamaha r3
Suzuki gsx 250r
KTM rc390
>>
>>17490733
We ride bikes, talk to each other about bikes, and there's a painfully obvious reason you don't get the jokes...
>>
>>17490768
None of those are sports. Don't waste your money on any of them. Get a 750 gixxer. Ride it in cuck mode if you have too.
>>
>>17490768
Those aren't sportbikes, but the rc390 is the best of those.
>>
>>17490774
What makes the suzuki a best?
>>
>>17490768
Go-fas: Ninjette
Not blow up after five hours at redline: cbr300r
Cheat on engine displacement, then fall apart anyways: ktm
Best minisport: cbr250rr, old. Second; cbr250rr, new.
>>
>>17490781
Suzukiphilia, obviously. These people are irrational.
Are you after a sub-500 for licensing? Trying to get practice on a smaller displacement before real riding® ?
If it's for the street, buy the Honda. If it's on a track, ninjette.
>>
>>17490781
Test one and find out. Price is a huge factor where I live. Gsxr750 is cheaper by thousands compared to cbr600/r6 (gsxr600 is even cheaper still but you may as well get a 750 since it's as small and light as a 600 with torque like a 100). It's my 4th Suzuki and never had a mechanical problem even on one with 100,000 miles>>17490783

Is there anything wrong with leaving my rear shock at the highest preload? Will it wear the shock out faster?

I just want a little bike to tool around on.

I probably should just bite the bullet and find a drz 400 for my second bike.

Don't know your street to dirt ratio, but would a cb500x work for your purposes? It's cheap, economical, and can handle just about any beginner dirt rides. If you decide to commit further, there's even a rally raid kit to turn it into a proper mini-adv.
I think leftovers are still going for somewhere around the cost of a new cbr300r...

You don't need to worry about how the plastic looks to you or other people because you can only see the mirrors, handlebars, and gauges and other people can only see a vaguey bike shaped blur.

One of the reasons italian bikes look so good is because they spend so much time parked.

I'd accept two sides to a swingarm if it were set up to keep the axle perfects aligned for chain adjustments, or if it was a shaft drive.

>>
>>17491608
One of harley's more famous prototype bikes was a high revving watercooled V4 with an underseat radiator. It was only not made because it didn't fit their brand name and was a potential flop and more cruisers was guaranteed cash.

If they bought ducati, they could make such bikes under the ducati marque, only throwing unreliable italian design to the wind and using nothing but American™ engineering (and austrian engines, and italian suspension, and japanese brakes....)

>>17491615
Learner restrictions are retarded because motorcycles are more complex than their engine displacement or power output. Rider position, handling characteristics, CBS, traction control, slipper clutches, turning circle, all non-issues as long as you have ABS on the front wheel and a small engine with 40HP. Like that's going to save you when you try to be rossi because it's a learner bike and will surely take the flogging, or when you crash into traffic trying to do a U turn on your sportbike with a steering damper and a steering lock smaller than your dick.
>>
>>17491629
ABS is for chumps, how is someone supposed to learn brake control if they can never feel where the wheels lock?

if you learn with ABS its pretty much making any bike ever made without it a no go for you because you will end up gorilla gripping the brakes and flipping it or something.
>>
>>17491629
Ducati reliability and maintenance has actually gotten way better in the past 10 years, they don't need americans for that.
>>
>>17491633
Because the point of learner laws is not learning, it's not dying. Why do you think the licensing schemes are expensive? Why do you think the limits are so low until you're an older adult? To reduce the number of people getting into motorcycles in the first place.

If you want to learn you pull the ABS fuse

>>
>>17491641
the oil leaks are intentional

it keeps the chain lubricated and the oil supply fresh between crud flushes and filter changes
>>
>>17491645
ABS adds a hydraulic relay between the lever an the brake
Meaning every time you squish the lever you're asking the computer to apply pressure
It takes away all feeling and promotes a "mash and pray" technique
But go ahead, nobike tells us how 20 years of riders saying "this is shit" are somehow less valid than a bureau of moms wanting their chilluns safe

You mean any bike with ABS that isn't a BMW with partially integral C-ABS?

Because most non-bimmers are pretty much like that. The japs don't do much well except make a good chassis and an engine that won't shit itself. The CCT on the other hand? Shits itself.

I definitely gotta do something about that seat but I'm still unsure which way to go.

Cheapest option would be to suck it up and be miserable.
Second cheapest option is the Yamaha comfort seat for about 210€.

From there on it gets expensive. The cheapest Top Sellerie seat is about 320€ without shipping. A custom one is about 400€. A Sargent seat (which has the best reviews) shipped from the US would amount to 450€ give or take.

Ah, decisions...

I really want to take a drum braked, air cooled bike and go ride rings around some cliched US noob on a 600 supersport. Dude, tire profiles.

Besides the suicidal nature of trying to ride one of those hard (are you pro enough to handle the in-corner wobbling?), or riding anything with drum brakes, sportbikes with sport tires and fat tendies lean as much as one of THOSE bikes with almost no tendies.

Next time you walk past a cruiser, admire his small chicken strips. And them remember the limited lean angle on those things.

Also, I mostly see blotchy strips on sportbikes, indicating that they leaned at least once but don't do it very often, probably because the nearest track is $150 a day and only accepts bikers with one piece leathers and better than DOT helmets just for lapping it.

having a small engine does not make you immune to the way traction works. 80mph round a blind corner is 80mph round a blind corner. 80mph into the back of a truck with a flat feels the same on a 400 as it does on a 600.

you can talk when you go against other guys on the track. people on the street will "pussy out" (let sanity get the best of them) even in stoplight races because racing on public roads is dangerous. everyone has a limit to how dangerous they are willing to go, and it's not the same as the limit of how hard they can corner.

There are a few possibilities.

1) fuel pump is going bad

2) bike needs a tune up. At least replace spark plugs and air filter.

3) you're not generating enough electricity at idle to get a good spark. You need to replace some electrical components. Check battery first. It might not be holding a full charge. You may also have to replace your stator, flywheel, and/or voltage regulator.

Get out your volt meter and your repair manual and start checking things.

That gunk doesn't magically get on the chain... it's all the excess lube and road grime that's flung off.
It's not a bad idea to clean the sprocket cover, but it's not the reason a chain wore out. Maintenance can mean the difference between 10k- and 20k+ miles on a chain.

I have a 2005 GSXR 600. It's my first bike. I went down in the early hours of 4th of July. A lady was texting on her phone and hit my back tire and I swerved a bit and I got sent into a median doing about 50mph (speed limit of the street). I rode about 3/4 of the median and flipped over the bike and rolled about five times. She took off and some of the boys caught up to her though. I'm obviously gonna fuck her day up like she fucked mine. This is my first bike, I've been riding for about six months and I've been trying to keep up with maintenance on it. I still have much to learn. The bike is fine, aside from a few minor scratches on the frame and a broken mirror and missing license plate holder. The problem I'm having is that the bike does not start. When I pull the clutch in and start it, it just constantly clicks and the sound is coming from the the battery area. I've been a few different things such as needing some OHM resistors to bypass the tip over sensor, jump starting the bike because it doesnt have enough of something to crank the motor, anyone have ideas or maybe point me in the direction where to exactly narrow this stuff down at? It's my first bike, my baby, I wanna save her. Appreciate the help fellas.
>>

A 125 currently so it would be a massive jump.. 16x the hp, and 2x the weight. So in effect the machine would be 8x more powerful.

Reason I'm considering that bike is because there's one near me for very cheap, and the insurance is not that much for some reason.

It's fine. I think people forget that the bike only does what you tell it to do. Just don't ride it like an asshole and you're fine. You can hamfist into a car on lesser bikes just the same. Calibrate your hand and your brain.

dunno m8. Thats a lot of power for someone who has only owned a 125. The fact that you're asking tells me that you're worried about it.

I think you can do it, but please be aware of your boundaries.
>>
>>17492839
You'll be fine. It's not like the bike explodes if you give it too much gas or something. If you take it slow you'll have no problem learning to ride a powerful bike.
>>
>>17493019
>You'll be fine. It's not like the bike explodes if you give it too much gas or something.

No but in wet/slippy conditions it will go out from under you and possibly crush your legs (speaking from experience).
>>
>>17493024
>in wet/slippy conditions
If you go slow and keep it in low RPMs that shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>17493024
Then don't take it out in bad conditions until you learn how to ride it well in normal ones. Its not that hard
>>
>>17493033
>Then don't take it out in bad conditions until you learn how to ride it well in normal ones. Its not that hard

you don't know until you try, guess I am a bit reckless sometimes.
>>
>>17492961
Right. I mean yes you still need a couple prerequisites. Have a brain and don't be an asshole. Is it going to be a shock? Maybe initially. But just take your time and get to know the bike and how it reacts to rider inputs. Familiarize and acclimate yourself to the throttle, weight, transitions, acceleration, braking, etc. It's not rocket science. Having said all that if you are a moron then not only should you not get the bigger bike, you should probably sell the 125 and stick to a cage. It is not necessarily an ideal jump, but it is absolutely doable. Only the rider being honest with themselves can say for sure if they can handle the additional responsibility.

My philosophy with bikes is to ride anything I can get my hands on so I have experience with all kinds of bikes from small to huge, forward controls to aggressive sportbikes, barkaloungers to death machines LOL. You do yourself a disservice when you only ride too narrow of types imo. Get out there, try them all, try inlines, twins, thumpers, 2 and 4 strokes, big small light heavy. Live a little. You will also usually realize that you will gravitate towards certain preferences...how else will you know what you really like if you never tried the options available?
>>
>>17493024
>>17493044
Are you the same anon? Have you had your legs crushed?

>see gap and reckon I can make it if I give it lots of throttle

>rear wheel spins up and bike literally does a backflip
>lands on my leg

luckily nothing was broken but my leg was very very sore and bruised for a while.

I am very lucky, my leg was wedged in the gap between the seat and the tank and it had a crash bung. Brake lever is a little bent but works ok still. It could have been far worse like a footleg going into my leg. Ever since then I respect the power of my bike.

I have friends to ride with, but they scare the shit out of me. All three are brothers, they all got bikes and started riding 5 months ago, they all started on supersport bikes for their first bikes, they all have crashed repeatedly.
I'm usually the ride leader because I've been riding 15 years but they lack any sort of skill to ride we'll, and they all keep their bikes in terrible condition. One dude has the Kevlar patch showing through his tire and refuses to spend the money on buying a new tire. On top of that, their bikes run like shit so every time we ride it turns into "let's play mechanic" because their bike dies or won't start. It adds hours to the trip every time.

What the fuck is wrong with Americans?
>>
>>17493174
yeah you did

The 650/500/300/250 is the not dying before you have a chance bike. It's essential for a month or so until you have throttle control and basic BP down (anchor with legs, not with arms), and also an understanding of how dangerous it is to rip on public roads. Takes about one immature bout of acceleration and someone pulling out on you, with barely enough time to brake and swerve.

And then after getting a big bike and riding like an intelligent person you get bored with the power if you don't do any trackdays, so you go back to a smaller bike.

>be me
>have prior experience

You don't need wide tires when you don't brake, barely accelerate, have only one corner radius, and the bike and rider combined weigh like 250lbs.

Of course it's also pro Autorace riders that make their living racing that against JSBK guys doing it as a PR event and have barely if at all ridden the track before let alone set the bike up for it.
