So far only Honda, kawasaki and Aprilia have tried it
Honda has their DCT and hondamatic (2spd)
Kawasaki had a dsg
Aprilia has their CVT
They all failed for offering no benefits and way too many drawbacks

I can actually expand on this if you're interested instead of just baiting

most people who drive cars do so for convenience and necessity, motorcycles however are for fun (along with most bike owners own cars) .

and yes there are exceptions, thats why scooters exist.

what are the drawbacks of you learning how to shift your own fucking gears?

always fun trying to discuss a simple topic on 4chan
>>
>>17465418
nice deflection

But being in the wrong rev range at the wrong time can actually cause you to have the wrong amount of power in a turn.

Automatics are shit at knowing when to shift. If your bike decides to upshift while you're accelerating while in a turn, and you lose the ability to maintain downward force on your rear tire, you could crash easily.

"Muh power control" isnt a meme for bikes, or cars even. But for cars it isnt life threatening
>>
Instead of shitposting, can I know if yesterday after I posted my email I've been added to the SEM group?

Because no one contacted me yet.
>>
>>17465429
you call my post deflection
yet you posted >>17465412 this piece of shit
nice talking to you

btt
automatic does not mean that you can't shift anymore btw
shift down in/before a turn, it will only shift up again after you rev up again, not sooner, that's how automatic works
automatic is probably way better than you at shifting
the scenario you posted there will never happen
>>
>>17465407
It can't see what's coming up ahead and shift accordingly
>>
>>17465449
but you can
like I said, for special cases you can still shift yourself, you just do it with the press of a button instead of a lever and the clutch
and you don't have to worry about suffocating your bike when you have to make a hard stop
>>
New to motorcycles.

I still don't quite understand how to effectively change gears.

When I change to a higher gear it always makes this "bump" breaking thing.

Do I have to slowly release the clutch while throttling? Or do I just stop throttling and change gear while releasing the clutch?

Fuck, someone help me.
>>
>>17465443
Automatic transmissions are less reliable, more complicated/expensive and in a motorcycle they offer no tangible benefit IMO.

Motorcycle trannies are bretty good as they are and bikes will aways get moving anyway, so the benefits of a DCT aren't as great as they'd be on a car.

Not only that but in a bike of all things it pays to be attentive to what the machinery is doing/about to do.

So fuck that crap.
>>
>>17465469
You should always be VERY SLOWLY releasing the clutch. On some bikes take a good 5 seconds to do it.
>>
>>17465407
For starters
DCT is entirely computer dependant, if any of the speed sensors is faulty or reads anomalies it'll throw a transmission code and shut off
You can't change gearing, wheel size or even tyre aspect or the ECU will throw a fit

DSG is just a normal transmission actuated by solenoids, it won't shift any smoother than a careful rider, but it will gladly eat through clutches like bisquits

CVT is your standard scooter transmission
I love the simple ones because they're entirely mechanically actuated and can be tuned easily and for cheap
They are completely unable to take any torque and offer virtually no engine braking

Standard motorcycle transmissions are dog gear sequentials, you already have only 2 options: shift up and down

The lag automatics introduce and their inability of correctly judging a situation means they'll always be inferior from a performance and safety standpoint
This is why they are exclusively used in commuters

Look no further than what happened to Guy when his transmission unexpectedly disengaged mid-corner and you'll understand why
>>
>>17465298
Come on now, lets all do meth like true bikers.
>>
>>17465462
What's the difference between that and your foot? You don't need the clutch to shift once you're moving

got my bike stolen exactly a week ago, but it's been found. someone called the police on it when it was standing on a parking lot for a while. apparently the culprits couldn't open the tank so it ran out of gas after they managed to reach the next city. instead of red-black it's matte-black so I'll see how that looks, I should have it back by tomorrow.

This was an interesting read, thank you. I have had the possibilty to test two scooters this weekend and it was quite comf, but the throttle was squishy, starting to move was weird and either slow and smooth or unpredictable.

I don't think I would feel safe riding a fast motorcycle that I couldn't manually shift. If auto was an option, I might use it but if I couldn't go back to safely controlling the thing I'd be worried.

Because bike manuals are easier to operate and bike autos are actually somewhat confusing and possibly dangerous.

Cars traditionally have H pattern shifters with a neutral between every gear, and used to not even have synchros. This made shifting actually a huge fucking pain in the ass. Even synchronized H patterns are hard for some people to shift, and the gearing in most cars means you need more of a delay for smooth shifts, and the delay you need is all over the place for each gear. So, the automatic was born, and normies stopped grinding gears after every stoplight. Fast forward to today and modern car suspensions are so hard to upset (you can spin out and not flip over! trucks exlcuded) that shit like shifting in corners rarely matters, especially with lolfwd, and automatic is better for most people.

Now, motorcycles. The shifter is easy to operate. It's one click up or one click down. The ratcheting mechanism pretty much times the shfits for you and the only long delay is first to second, usually, and you don't go below second once moving. For some reason, a 13 year old girl can shift a dirtbike like a pro but a 23 year old man has troubles being smooth in a manual car. Also random down or upshifting in a corner could very well kill you on all but the most fancy motoGP-tech-laden bikes.
>>
>>17465601
>>17465476
insightful post but wasn't what happened to guy a false neutral? I'm not a specialist on that but at most an intelligent auto could even prevent something like this
>>
>>17465745

You can pull the clutch, pop it up a gear, then release the clutch in a very quick, smooth action and return to applying throttle. On the street it's not really a big deal for it to take a second or two at your own pace. Just do whatever you feel is comfortable. I only use the clutch to upshift like 5% of the time, if that.

you shift to have the bike sound a certain way. when you get it, you'll get it, but it's all about how the bike sounds. if it sounds right, it won't be lurching either. learn the song of your bike. it'll sound pretty cool.

shifting is a lot like playing a rhythm game so if you play weeaboo phone games like love live, idolmaster, and bang dream you should get it down pretty fast.

I got to ride a dct bike a few years ago, the way it would work is it would only down shift for you when engine RPM dropped to less than 2k like when your coming to a stop. It would also downshift if you pressed downshift button. As for upshifts it wouldn't do anything till you pressed the button telling it to up shift. It was a very intuitive system and gave the rider a lot of control over it.

That being said I couldn't really justify the extra cost of the system. From what I remember it was 3500 extra and the extra cost of maintenance. The only use I could see for a system like that is if someone had lost a leg and still wanted to ride a bike.

Good sunday, DBT.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding where I can buy reasonably priced parts for my Katana 600. I desperately need a rear brake rotor (looks like the previous owner put new pads on expecting it to smooth out...) Are there any good places or websited that can sell me used parts so I dont have to pay 150$ for 1 brake rotor?
Anyways here's my off road junker

This actually has made me interested in motorcycle brand distribution in Germany, so I opened up our largest ad platform and looked up the German ads for each of the following brands:
Honda - 14.084
Yamaha - 13.476
BMW - 11.803
Suzuki - 10.865
Kawasaki - 8.477
Harley-Davidson - 6.913
KTM - 4.931
Ducati - 3.937
Triumph - 3.119
Aprilia - 2.125
Moto Guzzi - 1.194
Husqvarna - 854
MV Agusta - 548
Royal Enfield - 203

So this should theoretically reflect the popularity of bike brands in Germany pretty accurately.

You can buy from the junkyards (which means Ebay, if you don't have one close) or China aftermarket (which also means Ebay if you don't want to wait forever). Like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/252526390083

Suzuki used the same rotor on almost all their street bikes for decades, Is your bike on this list? http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/suzuki/SP-69211-21E00.html
If so, then you can search Flea-bay for a used rotor for any of those bike. Maybe find a nice one for $20 shipped.

Even better, stop using your rear brake.

Yeah, but there are better ways to do it than to hurry down highways for days on end. Their 48 state challenge has a limit of 10 days to complete, and even the most efficient 48 states routes take almost 7,000 miles. That's 700 miles per day over ten days. The 50cc coast to coast challenge sounds fun though, especially due to not having a time limit.

Yeah, the entry level ones aren't bad, and there are some single day single state ones, but then you get idiotically long, idiotically timed ones like the 48 states or coast to coast. The 50cc coast to coast challenge does have a 50 hour limit after all for a 2400 mi trip, making it a continuous ride at 50 mph which in my eyes is impossible for 50cc.

Is a 250cc powerful enough for urban/rural backroads, if i plan on keeping the bike for 2-3 years at least? I don't need to be on the highway ever because my city is small enough to take main roads everywhere quickly... and nearby cities are accessible by some scenic back roads with 40-50 mph speed limits. I'm not afraid of speed (i drive like a bastard) but I reallly don't want to expose myself to more risk than is necessary and also want to spend under 2k on a bike (am cheap as shit).

Ninja 250 would be perfect, and there's enough info out there that if something went wrong you could find a forum where someone's already dealt with the issue. Spare parts are plentiful.

If you're new to bikes and buying used don't get anything with "carb problems, needs a clean" because it's never just the carbs, and read up on how to check tyre manufacture dates to make sure it's not still running around on the OEM rubber it came with 10-15 years ago.

The "cheap as shit" bit is fine, but make sure you're budgeting some gear into your purchase. Even a 20 MPH smash has the potential to crush your ankle between the bike and a gutter, or send you sliding for long enough to regret wearing jeans.

Ninja 250 is a good 250, though I'd also put a word in for the Honda VTR 250. Not the cheapest, but they have good torque and are bullet proof, so you can be cheap with maintenance.
If you're willing to not bee too cheap, get a Ninja 300. They just have that little bit of extra oomph and EFI is handy.

If you are a bit taller like me (6'5"), you may want a bigger engine bike, like some kind of 500 or 650 that is learner friendly.
That's how I chose my CB400... which I just wrecked today.

Yeah. Front forks are bent to the point where full lock left with the handlebars is straight with the wheel. I think it's burning radiator fluid, too. She still switched on and the dash fully works despite dangling from the cables.

Generally, get as new and few k's as you can afford. Do keep in mind it's a general rule, though. Remember, your first bike is not your last. Just get a bike that's reliable the first time around.

My CB400 looked like an old UJM which is what you're after, but I'm not certain they sell them in America at all. I think they stopped porting them into Australia recently, which is a shame. I might even attempt a few of them myself even though I'm in Europe and can't do many of the iconic American ones.

Central Germany, about 100k from the geographical center of the country. Have only gotten interested in motorcycles recently as a more affordable and involved experience compared to cars, and I'm still on the fence about committing so I might not even have a license and bike before the end of the year, nevermind attempting a polar winter ride as a beginner. Maybe the winter afterwards.

Cross leaning is actually okay for slow speed manoeuvres, you see a lot of moto gymkhana guys doing it.

You shouldn't drop it in corners but understand that it may feel a bit understeery compared to a dirtbike as they can change direction very quickly, and you're often turning using berms rather than flat corners.

You'll adjust soon enough, just learn your limits and take the time to make yourself a better rider. Nothing wrong with being a novice anon, just don't push it too hard too early.

The XR650L exists because it is grandfathered in on emisions standards from the 90's.

The XR650R would never make it passing modern emissions.

Changing anything about the XR650L motor would require it to conform to modern emissions standards as well, which it would never do.

The 650 single bikes are never going to change, then they are going to disappear. Same can be said about the DRZ400. They only exist in their current form because they are grandfathered from an era of much less restrictive emissions.

Completely redesigning a single cylinder bike and motor from the ground up to meet extremely restrictive emissions standards is not lucritive enough, especially considering the mtors cannot be used across the maufacturers range like most parallel twins or inlive 4's are. There is no incentive to update these bikes.

They will continue to sell them as is until they no longer sell, then they will die and not be replaced by anything other than an 'adventurized' version of one of each companies parallel twin street bikes, and they will weigh 400lbs+ and be shit offroad.

You will need more than one camp grill to cook for all the people, otherwise it will take you 2 hours only to cook.

I'm no expert, you guys tell me. I think at that point it's just better to go buy good bread, speck and cheese and some veggies at a supermarket. Problem is that as I understand it SEM will be the weekend and supermarkets here are closed unless you are in big places.

2005 r6

Took my bike to get 30K mile serviced and for ruff idle, running on 2 pistons.

Service put new spark plugs in, fixed it. Picked the bike up and road home, super smooth engine, ran fine.

Get about 8 miles down the road and sitting at light. Ruff idle. starts missing. Ride around town or 15 minutes. Issue seems to be only at low idle 1 - 4 rpms and lower speeds. No missing when I am going 50mph on the highway.

Decide to ride back to service. Explain it all. They said it could be a bad spark plug even tho the plugs are new, they don't think its a coil issue but tell me it could be 1 of several things and they will take the bike back and let mew know something in a few days. They are at least going to put a new spark plug or 2 in it.

Any ideas from you guys? Gas is fresh.
