Do flexible oil lines harden with age?

I have a DR350SE (dry sump) in Peru that's reading super high for oil. I assumed this was gas leaking into the oil, but after draining the oil the amount seems normal and can't detect any gas in it.

So I'm left thinking there's a clog in the drain lines from the reservoir, but I'm afraid to take them off since they're fiberglass-wrapped looking things that have been on there for near 20 years I fear will fall apart if I mess with them.

>>
>>17421833
checking the oil level on a dry sump is weird. If you just fill it up until it shows on the dipstick it's way too full. The dipstick will show little to no oil when the bike is cold. After running for about 10 minutes the bike pumps most of the oil up into the oil tank and it will then show the proper oil level. After sitting a few hours it will appear to be low again.

That's assuming it's similar to the DRZ oiling system.

Im well familiar with the weirdness of measuring dry sump oil level (nearly a year into riding down from Canada), but in the last week the level has been crazy high (basically maxing out the reservoir). I assumed it was the super high altitude / low pressure causing a leak in the carb, but there really didn't seem to be any extra volume (i.e. leaked gas) to the oil, so either there's too much oil being pumped up into the reservoir (in the frame on the DR350, probably the same on the DRZ) or it can't drain back down normally.

You'll never become a good rider starting out on something so powerful.

Just like you'd never be near as good a driver if your first car was a Corvette (vs something like a Miata).

You'll always be afraid to use the power, and won't develop the confidence with things like deep leans and quick 'flicks': you'll be trying to control the bike, instead of actively controlling IT.

If you have the money to buy new, look at something like a RC390 (sport bike) or DRZ400 (dual sport) that will still be a handful to learn on (anything more and you better update your will), but that will allow you to learn near the limits.

75hp is SUICIDE SUPER BIKE territory only 20 years ago.

For a first bike anything over 40hp is really excessive.

Consider that your dads first bike probably had 15hp and he was scared.

The power produced by cars and bikes has massively increase the last two decades (new economy shitboxes make what sports/pony cars did 20 years ago), but while cars have compensated with a million drivers aids to keep you from killing yourself, you'll be lucky if your brand new bike has ABS (traction control, something standard in cars for a decade, is a luxury item)

>>17421994

it' s probably useful to spend some time practicing at the limit of your bike's capabilities, especially if you want to git gud, and it's a lot safer and easier to do that with a little bike than a big one. but you really shouldn't be doing that on the road anyway. "get a small bike" makes sense if it means "get a 125 dirt bike and beat up your local motocross track (or put scooter tires on it and take it to the kart track)", does not make much sense if it means "get a ninja 250 instead of a Harley 883 for your commute".

also you'll probably drop your first bike so bear that in mind before buying some brand new shiny dream-sled

>40hp is really excessive
That's retarded. An SV650 has 75hp and my short incompetent GF can handle hers just fine. The the amount of trouble 75hp can get you in over 40hp is easily offset by the ability to get you out of trouble because they can actually accelerate and overtake, as well as typically having better brakes than 40hp shitbikes.
There's nothing wrong with getting a 40hp shitbike, I've owned plenty, but there's no reason not to get just about anything sub 100hp imo

A small-displacement scrambler-looking bike?

The idea of a modern scrambler seems to be to take a big heavy bike and make it *look* like a small light one.

Take a look at the tu250x. Not exactly a scrambler, but you could 'fix' that with an aftermarket high pipe.
>>

40hp what bike though?

A DRZ400 has 32hp and can accelerate out of trouble pretty easily.

I had a problem with that the other day. Was installing a new clutch cover that replaces the huge chunk of metal oil spinner with a normal filter. Found out the spinner requires a special tool from honda, a socket made for the grom spinner and the grom spinner only, to release a single nut holding it in. A buddy and myself beat on it with picks, bent needlenose pliers, and eventually had to take a 24mm socket and dremel the shit out of it to make our own version of the special tool.

Good thing it went straight in the trash, that nut was totally fucked up by the end of it. Looks like yours enjoyed a lot of frustration as well.

Local dealers have only last year's models, and this year's models in shittiest color schemes/options. Told me "we just cant sell them. We won't have a 2017 GSXR this year. Are you interested in this new 2014 CBR600RR????"

Why is no one buying new sportbikes? Is it one of those things like internet ninjas post a lot of talk about how great the new Panigale is, yet no one has the money to put their money where thier mouth is???

>tfw just want to buy 2017 Gixxer but no one will sell me one :(
>>
>>17423349
Was just browsing CL and figured you might be interested in another project.

If you are not regularily moving large things, a bike IS the most practical vehicle period.
>>

Oh, no, I'm broke as fuck. The DRZ is halfway through a frame up rebuild and my 701 needs maintenance, and I still haven't paid off my credit card from my Moab trip.

Did you play with Legos, Erector Sets, and other building toys/games as a kid? If you did, then you will be fine. If not, then have a friend who can help.

Oh, an idea for an addition to the sticky: a full checklist of tools and associated items.

Depends on what's actually wrong with it. The ad says 'water pump shaft' which probably isn't the issue because the water pump probably isn't on it's own shaft. Replacing the impeller is pretty easy.

It's most prob the seals on the shaft, dependant on shaft age, it could be grooved too.

Same. I also feel a lot safer riding even though I know it's not the case, mostly because I can accelerate or stop super fast compared to a car, and if I swerve I'll fit in between things, unlike a car.

Carby needle leaking? Some bikes with a crank case breather that is on the bottom of the air box will draw fuel into the case. With a blocked overflow on the Carby and I worn needle fuel will have to go somewhere. Sadly fuel mixes well with oil so it unlikely of would notice it on a dip stick or window and is poor as a lubricant so can cause damage fairly quick if left. Iv seen a few different bikes do it now. Mostly kawi and suzi ag or dual sports.

These two points I want to agree with but it's hard to.
I'm somewhat less stressed, but that's just cause I like riding, the only reason I get stress on the bike is the reason I don't always feel safe, the fucking drivers here.
At least once a week I have someone try to push me off the road or into another lane, and thats in my truck, now it is easier to get out of in a bike, but that's just one bit of fuckery they like to pull out here.
>>
>>17422439
yeah fancy earplugs arent going to fix that issue the howard leight max 30 are the best ive come across for throw aways i can hear someone talking to me in a normal voice at 5 feet over moderate to large PAs blasting away its really great when you can have a normal conversation with someone that also has them in at a concert while everyone else is screaming just to hear themselves

Hello guys, new rider here.

I am still trying to grasp countersteering. But as far as i understand, pushing the right side of the steeringwheel will push my bike over on the side at an 45 degree angle which allows me to lean right.

Is that the correct way and thinking of countersteering?
>>
>>17423560
Riding along your bike is like a gyroscope. So you push the bars and wheel left the bike will lean right and swing back
>>
>>17423560
Over ~12mph pushing on a handlebar will make the bike turn that way. Don't think about it, just understand that it works that way.

Not to attack you specifically, but how is this not instinctive? I've literally only thought about countersteering once in three years.
Yesterday. Just to see if the shit works, I "pushed" into the next lane at a 2 lane exit.

Well, i've had some issues turning on curved roads in 40+ mph. Once i ended up slightly in the oncoming lane. Because of my fear of laying down too much, and my father who rode behind me told me i need to be able to react better when turning like this.

Because, if i fuck up a curved road. And i try to turn right with the handlesl on my way into oncoming lane then my bike will stand up and i will die.

A 13 year old weasel walks into a bar and approaches the counter. The bartender immediately notices the underage weasel.

"Sir, you look extremely young. I can't serve you even a single beer."

"Oh c'mon. You can't just slide me one?"

"Can't and will not serve to anyone under age."

"Fine. Well what other things do you have?"

"Well for non-alcoholics I have tap water and bottled water, I have coffee, and I have pop. Which would you like?"

"Pop." Goes the weasel.

Why would you brake with the rear brake anyways? Especially at speed?
>>
>>17423627

>>
>>17423595
You could get stupid and start trying to shove your face into the pavement.
Go to a parking lot, lean off a bit, and push your comfort level in a closed environment. Once you're used to getting close enough to make yourself uncomfortable, you can dial it back when you're in traffic.

Countersteering is meant to initiate a lean, not for using throughout.
>>
>>17423627
To settle the suspension while entering a corner.
Or, to slow/stop in a shorter distance.
>>

youll probably want to upgrade soon tough

someone just stole my a ninjler 300 in my area, I'm worried about me and my gfs bike parked outside in the apartment lot

right now we chain them front to end in one parking spot with a fuhgeddaboudit chain so they'll have to either break the chain with 40" cutters or find a van long enough to lift them both. Does this seem like a reasonable means of deterrence?

Same reason people are allowed to continue riding motorcycles in general despite critical injury/fatal accidents. It's our choice to do so.
It's up to them if they want to search for the edge and push their limits.
>>
>>17425438
Because unlike the retarded germans at the burgerking, the people of the IOM TT believe in personal accountability for injuries caused doing dangerous shit.

You're going fast and there's no margin of error. if you go too fast you're going to die. Everyone that signs up recognizes the risk, and the ones that don't take it seriously don't get another chance.

They do, though it's a fairly negligible distance on sportbikes.

Everyone dies. Some of us enjoy tasty lives first at whatever risk level we choose to accept.

A few early deaths isn't shit. Don't go and you won't be one of them. Now go visit a home for the aged or a hospice to see how long boring lives end...
