That's it though

>>
>>17406168
are you kidding me

I had to do a 50 question exam and 4 tests.
>>
>>17406195
ye, and like 4 days of tuition to pass the riding tests.
>>
>>17406188
Technically all you need to ride around is a permit which is 25 questions. There's a bunch or restrictions like not being able to drive at night. Not sure about other states, but in CA the MSF waives the riding test.
>>
>>17406145
Licensing is carried out by the state, not national government. In my state you take a 20 question multiple choice test to get your permit. A permit allows you to ride whatever you want but you're not allowed to ride at night or with a passenger. To get your full license you wait 6 months then take a skills test. Skills test involves cone weaving, controlled stop, quick stop, and uturns in a parking lot.
>>
>>17406188
You dont need it to get your 'learners permit', on which the only restriction is no pillion passengers.
Although here the legislation is on a state by state basis, so it's different in every state.

>>17406195
>>17406200
Sucks, I paid $35 and took about 15 minutes to get my permit and rode on it for a year before I took the driving test to get my full M Endorsement, which was another hour and $75.
So grand total of about $110 and a little over an hour
>>
>>17406188
MSF if suggested and allows you to skip the skills test, but not required.
>>
came close to asking a girl out but instead I just rode about my self. good choice or not.
>>
>>17406012
Yea i've ridden all of them plenty of times, i've got the sidecar right not, borrowed it for a week or two since he never rides it.
>>

>>
>>17406188
MSF is a good starting point for someone who's never ridden a bike before, it also gives you an insurance discount and can be done instead of the DMV test (it's the same test just depends where you do it)

Also in some states if you want to get an M class under 18 you need to do both.

Foreigners will never know this feeling. Take a 25 question test and there's nothing stopping you from riding a liter bike.
>>
>>17406232
I find the restrictions over here frustrating but that is just ridiculous, you shouldn't be allowed to just take a 25 Q test then be allowed to ride something like a busa or K1300S

FFuuuucccckkkkk! Chain breaker finally arrived so I popped the worn out old chain off my CM250C... Three different manufacturers (Volar, DID and JT) all list it as a #520 104-link, but the one I just took off is only 98 links. WTF?

Current Project:

Running barn find 1972 Bridgestone MII RS, with clean title.

All it needs is new controls, a clutch pack, and a headlight to be street-legal.
All electrics work, brakes are oversize and also work, oil injection works, no leaks, etc.
I heard that these things were little rockets in their day, what with their rotary valves.
At 25 horsepower and 300 lbs wet, hoping this will make a good first bike.

Ive flipped bikes more times than i can count in the 20 years i have been riding.

no man just no. you're gonna drop it, wreck it, or be terrified of dropping or wrecking it and never really use the power you're paying for.

imo keep it around or below 50-60hp for your first bike famalam - plenty to have fun with but much harder to accidentally kill yourself. supersports are tough to learn on, too. consider a standard/naked bike with less to break on it, and easier handling.

not at all, they're nice enough. You definitely can't ride those twins without getting a smile when you crack it open. they are just overpriced, overwhelmingly owned by a wealthier version of your stereotypical gixxer rider.

they also aren't really best in class for anything. why get a 1200 monster when you could get a superduke? why get a panigale when you could get an RSV4, s1000rr, etc. the hypermotard is alright i guess but there are better adv bikes too.

Don't do that man, I'm not one of the sorts of people to steer others away from sport bikes, but don't buy a near new Ducati with no experience.

It's not worth the risk of throwing away all that money if you drop it or dump it. You're better off buying whatever the cheapest bike you can find on Craigslist is and tooling around on that for 6 months or a year and then using it as part of your down payment/ putting it toward the next bike.

Mechanic did a $650 major service, lubed all my bearings, replaced spark plugs that were fucked, did a carb sync, etc.

He then asks if I want him to clean the carb jet that's clogged and makes my bike run on 3 cylinders at idle, and also if I want him to replace my fork seal. He tells me it's going to be $1100 with those jobs added.

Obviously I'm going to do it myself, but why on earth would it be so much for what are relatively simple jobs? He also said my 'rear wheel bearing needs doing', any ideas what that means?

We do:

25-50 common sense questions
Cone swerve at 20mph, turn from a stop (your wheelbase must not leave the ~2ft guidelines), 2 parking space figure 8, emergency stop, 20mph obstacle swerve and stop.

People who bring in sportbikes inevitably fail because they must need more counterlean at low speeds to accomplish half of it. People who bring in cruisers also fail when they lose balance and drop it due to the weight. So, most people take a $100 course that provides ultra-lightweight dual sports that are nothing like the bike you'll actually ride.

Our problem is not a lack of tests but a lack of tests on YOUR ACTUAL BIKE.

I gurantee you, we would all be riding sport nakeds, adventue bikes, and dual sports if that was a requirement.

Why own a sportbike if you aren't going to the edge of the tire at least once a month, track or not?

>pay a premium for consumption of fuel and big fat sport tires
>short and long distance discomfort
>more plastics is just more shit to break and more shit to take off for oil changes, but sportbike fairings are not sport tourer fairings and may not actually keep the wind off you for comfort purposes, since they're for track use and probably just control how air currents spoil around the bike for minimum drag while retaining cornering stability in crosswinds instead of keeping you dry and happy
>premium "you'll notice it on trackdays" features like traction control, USD forks, stiff springs adjustable for rebound/damping/etc instead of just preload
>no centerstand because MAX LEAN ANGLE BRO

How old are we talking?
Insurance and compensation rates are way up in my country because old dogs jump on a 600cc thinking nothing on it, because their 600cc 50 years ago had 20snailpowers and they die.
>>
>>17408403
Age and maturity really aren't correlated for men past the age of 16. Some stop aging, some mature and then go back, some turn into their mothers.

The best motorcycle licensing system would be to have a person take a prolonged skills test on their personal bike covering a full range of low-speed and high-speed maneuvers, followed by a period of electric surveillance via random GPS speed assessment that ends after anywhere from a week to a few months to determine if they are responsible enough to ride on public roads.

but that would be so expensive a government might have to cut other programs like free library cards for black gay transgender syrian refugees, or worse, make it extremely expensive to get licensed at all, not counting training, so we get "lol u 2 young" or fucking nothing.
>>
>>17408403

US here, at 25, rates drop dramatically. Also some antique insurances puts a stipulation that someone under 25 is not allowed to drive the car.

Do I proceed? It felt very comfy on the test ride anyways but something feels really cucked about a lowered seat.

Textile has made leaps and bounds and beats leather where it matters.

leather only wins if you crash many, many times and slide on the same patch of gear or crash at track speeds, and tracks require leather bodysuits anyways.

Better to save your money for better armored, better fitting textile. The best textile you can afford will protect your body in likely crashes much better than the best leather you can afford.

Icon. Otherwise hunt around for sales.
I prefer not to be a walking billboard, so I wear Rev'it for most of my gear. They're pretty reasonable too.
>>17408628
I would love to be able to crash dozens of times!
You are an idiot if you don't share this sentiment.

And it's nice not having to buy a new jacket. Textiles have improved, so I rock icon's DKR set to keep warm in the winter--but otherwise leather is an investment. Everything else is just precaution.
>>17408524
It'd probably save money anyways, with the comparative cost of fairings. Thanks.

Buy a Corbin. You have an excuse.
Or, if there's a custom sculptor in your state, ask how long you're going to be keeping this bike. Would it be worth it?

In the NW of the US, there are two shops I know of that do this. They literally have you make a four hour appointment and make the entire seat using you as a measuring tool.
See if you can find something similar. Maybe go into family repair shops, or browse German language magazines for recommendation.
https://youtu.be/lfRk3YETUkI

Also, while you're here, know of any free, online, German language motorbike magazines? I have to learn a second language for university, and think relearning would be easiest. (2nd generation. My mother banned me after my father pointed out I was swearing at the other Americans...age 4.)

from what I read, it was 7am and he was traveling westbound, so the sun was to his back. Truck must have had the sun in his eyes and never saw him and turned in front of him. Dude left a skid mark over 100ft long and hit the rear tires full tick.

Why don't we see more belt drive?

>lasts longer
>zero maintenance
>same power delivery as a chain
>less chance of catastrophic failure
>it it snaps for whatever reason it's not going to absolutely destroy the insides like a chain would

I can understand it being needed for supersports where every single bhp is required and obviously it's not suitable for off road but I bet 90% of riders would benefit from it.

Packaging and drive ratios

Chains can accomodate insanely small sprockets. Pulleys need to be so wide, and so, need a really fucking big rear pulley to get the same drive ratio as a bike with a modest rear sprocket. They also need to be wider the stronger they are.

It's fine, really, but a lot of motorcycling is about tradition and looks even for rice rockets, so chains it is
>>
>>17409064
>put belt drive on 150HP sportbike
>it's three inches wide
>whole belt and tensioner system sticks way out to the side to clear the tire
>rearsets up and out of the way or moved further out, no other choices
>sudden failures happen

budget bikes, belt ok, your 50hp nc700 does not need a chain
sportbikes no
>>
>>17409064

dumb question.

so im pretty confident my undertail is exhaust is causing my ECU to overheat on my bike and because of that about an hour into riding it my bike loses all power and wont start until it cools down again. so basically is it safe to ride without an exhaust? at least until i can get a shorty pipe install or reseat my ECU under my seat or something.

I ride a superior Fireblade. If I wanted a V Twin sport bike I'd buy an RC51. Ducati ergonomics and valve maintanence are a joke. I can ride my sportbike all day like it was a comfortable sport tourer. How long can you stand to be on your Italian torture rack? Ducatis are fashion accessories. Nothing more.
