I broke a (hydraulic) clutch lever once staring at some fine yoga pant booty. Rode halfway home with a pencil found on the side of the road attached to the remnant with duct tape (roll kept under seat). The repair failed.

If I had to stop and restart I either shut it off bump started it (on sufficiently long and steep hills) or put it in neutral, got a running start, and clunked into second.

To this day, second is a little fucked and it bounces back into neutral if you don't shift just right.

Just carry a spare clutch lever and the needed wrenches under your seat and keep a spare cable routed and ready to go if possible. Probably wouldn't hurt to have a spare brake lever, footpegs, and gearshift if you can replace the shifter that easily. It's actually a valid use for those $15 chinese sets that never fit right.
>>
>>17404071
I have a GPS app (OSMAND) running on my phone a lot of times when I'm riding. When I'm just out riding around it's nice to be able to glance down and see which directions the roads are going when I'm coming up to an intersection out in the middle of nowhere so I can decide if I want to turn off or stay on the same road.

When I'm on trips far away from home and need to cover 400-500+ miles to get to my destination that day then I'll program in a route so I don't have to constantly stop and look up which road I should take. On long trips like that I usually have a long travel day of ~500 miles followed by a couple days spent in that area just riding around for fun, then another long travel day to another area to do the same thing.

I looked into them a few months ago. The ergos are the same as basically any other standard/sports tourer.

pros:
>DAT belt drive
>good wind protection
>factory luggage available
>ABS

cons:
>overcomplicated BS on the handgrips
>that nice luggage is an expensive option
>the parallel twin is nothing special
>pretty sure there's been recalls
>bmw's reliability record with the k16, k12, r12, and f650 has been shite

Get a ninja 650 or something a little more zesty to keep yourself interested imo.

All you need to carry is a small set of vise-grips with you. If you break a lever then you just clamp the vise grips on the nub that's left really tight and gently ride home.

I have a 12v and USB power port installed on my bike to keep my phone charged while I'm riding / camping. I'll carry USGS maps as a backup for remote areas where I plan to go offroad but for paved road / highway navigation I find that GPS is superior.

there's a blue 2006 one for a good price, low mileage and comes with all the luggage already.

I test rode it today, very comfortable for me.

The sensible man inside me sees the amazing mpg, belt drive, cheap insurance and price and says go for it, but the boy racer inside me says get something more powerful -- who cares about the money.

As a commuter with long distance capabilities (exactly what I want) it just ticks all the boxes, but something inside me says I should keep looking. I don't know why, because it ticks all my boxes.

I would consider a 2006 bmw to be a liability. I can't comment on the F800 in particular, but did you know that you need to drop the coolant to change spark plugs in the k1200? Then you need a BMW tool to refill the coolant. Madness.

Vstrom is a 90-10 bike.
Consider a dr650 or xr650 if you actually want to go offroadan, but the weestrom will definitely be a more comfortable highway bike
Basically just figure how you will actually be riding
>>
>>17404602
Wee strom is not really an adv, more of a tall standard. But if it's just dirt/gravel roads then it'll do fine.
>>
>>17404626
>90-10
Isn't that a pretty accurate summary of most "offroad" road trips? 450 miles go to there, 100 miles of dicking around in the dirt, 450 miles to go home.
>>
>>17404662
It's not really meant that literally, a 90/10 bike isn't going to fly if you have 900 miles of highway and 100 miles of Erzberg.
>>
>>17404626
Yeah, that's why I figured something like a V-Strom would be better for my friend. He'll be riding paved roads / highways most of the time along with some national forest / fire roads occasionally on trips. I'm just worried that the V-Strom won't be able to do some of the roads / areas in Big Bend. I've got a DR650 which is already a handful when it's loaded down and things get a little rough, the V-Strom is like 100 lbs heavier than my DR which is a bit concerning.
>>
Hey new rider here, what is the best way to do gps for a motorcycle?

I can get around town easily enough since I know the roads but if I want to travel anywhere I gotta figure out something for gps.
>>
>>17404662
That depends entirely on how you plan your route.
Its not really an "offroad road trip" if you go there on the road, is it?
>>
>>17404693
use your phone and google maps, just plug some headphones in and keep the phone in your pocket.

That way if it rains its not a problem, and you don't have to worry about it flipping out of the holder in the middle of a ride (happened to me once).
>>
>>17404678
Yeah he may want to get something more trail oriented then... The weestrom is a good bike but it's not designed for trail riding
If he's mostly commuting though, it may be good for him
Again, it's up to how he plans on riding

>>17404693
Get a RAM mount and wire up a USB hub to your battery, and just use your phone. The other solution is buying a dedicated gps and mount which will be more than 4x the cost

They are simple to install. Just mount the USB port somewhere convent and attach the wires to the battery. The one I have had a small blue LED on it, though. It would slowly drain my battery so I bought a $3 switch at autozone to cut power to it when I wasn't using it.

If the speed limit is 45 you should expect a lifted truck to be going 45. 45 is not a limited access road speed either. so, what makes sense about legally allowing something that's lucky to break 20mph in the middle of the fucking road?

That and entering first gear/actually getting the thing started.

In slow, just relax your body once you reach point of no return.
At speed: Fucking let go. The bike can go wherever it wants, but it doesn't need to take you over the rail with it.

I am genuinely, academically curious about both the formation of this "cuckhold" fetish and the reason it became the standard intraracial slur among white supremacists.

I mean, y'all must know how stupid you sound, right? I'm almost inclined to believe white women are extra thirsty not because of any medical or mystical property we've got.
You all just act like bitches.
It's like you show up to the starting line in everything, wailing about defeat that has yet to happen.

Starbucks is too mainstream, I only buy my coffee from grizzled old Greek delis with JUST the right amount of a down trodden look about them.

How else would I impress my Instagram Followers?
>>
So, I've been looking for cheap old Guzzis and the like to get into restoring, then realised I have no money, then realised I already own an MC22 that, while pretty, could use a little more work.

My first job is to paint the exhaust. It already has new fairings and I've removed all the rust I can find. Any other jobs you'd recommend? I think I'll eventually do some suspension tuning and really make the machine even more of a joy to ride.

I try to avoid having an accident every time I ride already, I don't know what else they expect me to do.

Guys, I've never bought a motor vehicle before and I've never messed with anything that involved titles/insurance/registration or the government in general, halp

Do I have all this straight? I guess what I'm asking is if you bought a used bike from a private owner in TX and something different happened, tell me about your situation.

>meet CL guy to take ownership of bike
>he fills out the date and odometer value on the title, we both sign it and I take it
>we both fill out and sign our portions of the title transfer / registration form and I take it (http://www.txdmv.gov/reports-and-data/doc_download/998-form-130-u-application-for-texas-title-and-or-registration)
>he fills out and signs a bill of sale and I take it (optional: he makes a copy for himself)(http://www.dmv.org/images/bill-of-sale.pdf)
>he gives me his most recent Vehicle Inspection Report if it's less than 90 days old
>he removes his plates and registration sticker from the bike (source http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/buy-sell/buying-selling-faqs.php)
at this point we part ways and a 30 day clock starts ticking for titling/registration. I can't *legally* ride on "public highways". what about parking lots?

>I buy insurance and get a pdf to print as proof of insurance until my card is mailed
>if seller didn't give me a recent VIR, I take the bike to a shop, show proof of insurance, get it inspected and get my VIR
question: so, I ride to the shop for the inspection without tags??
>since the bike is newer than 1996 (2005) and less than 50k miles (32k) it's exempt from the emissions test my county normally requires (http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/TN/htm/TN.548.htm#548.3011)

>i drive (in a car) to the county tax office with my:
>title
>title transfer / registration app form
>proof of insurance
>proof of inspection
>many dollars
>i get a plate with a registration/inspection sticker on it
>the seller gets refunded any full years of registration he had left and I get whatever partial year is left

good anon.
only a troll would say it was dumb to buy a ninja 300 as your first bike. The new ninjas are very nice and reliable. Yours got ABS? It's very smart to start with a bike of that caliber.
I was debating on an R6, but I'll be picking up a Ninja 300 or an R3 by the end of this week. 5.5-6.5 0-100km acceleration is fine and it's nice and controllable. I'll upgrade to the R6 in 6months to a year but I want to get a LOT of experience in first.
Have fun with your bike drive safe anon.
>>
>>17406930
I recommend drivers be like, age 24 minimal unless they have been driving their whole upbringing and really know. Still it's kind of a toss-up there, too.
You just don't have a proper mentality under that age, even at age 20 you're still phasing out of that teenage mentality. A lot of people don't (thanks to alcohol and drugs before they had fully developed brains).
I also agree with >>17407870
be safe anon always be aware when riding don't ever ride when you aren't calm and awake and alert. Have fun be safe.
