copypasta 'cause I',m slow

alright, I call "reputable" the brands that control their own manufacturing, rather than just have a contract manufacturer in China put their name on something and send it over. So that would be NOT be distributor house brands, some brand only sold in a particular chain shop... A few years ago BMW had to recall a helmet because it was made by some outfit somewhere, and BMW is not in the helmet manufacturing business, they are in the accessories sales business, what do they know about helmets?

And of course avoid stuff named "outlaw", "leather up", or anything else that markets itself as being the least helmet you can buy. Bell, HJC, Shoe, Arai, Shark, there's others, those guys just make helmets. That's what you want to look for. If the helmet says "TMS" on the outside and "Zhejiang Bio industry & trade co LTD" on the label on the inside... Just say no.

You could have a hidden switch that routes the high-voltage-to-sparkplug to the handlebar.

Traveling in Vietnam I had the ignition barrel go to shit on a shitty bike, so I put a wire by the handlebar so I could ground it out to stop it. Worked fine until one day it POURED raining and I started getting that through my hands. Fucking SUCKED.

I'd have to get up around 5 or so, or even just a little earlier to be able to take advantage of the lower temperatures. It's definitely an option, but I'm not sure I'm that dedicated.

>>17370839

I need to get something like that, it's planned for the future. Just so much shit to spend money on right now. I live in the desert too, evaporative coolers are pretty effective as long as it isn't monsoon season.

>>17370842

It's too hot outside here to ride for at least 4-5 months out of the year usually in my opinion. On the plus side, the rest of the year offers pretty consistently perfect weather.

>>17370861

Not even, I only consider helmet and gloves absolutely necessary, but when it's over 100 degrees and the sun is beating down there's no escape. In full gear you'll roast like a shwarma kebab, and you'll burn in less than an hour anywhere the sun can touch. Only option is to wear your lightest long sleeve clothing to keep the sun off, but you'll still sweat your balls off. Next week is supposed to reach 117.

Not terribly powerful, and the power is predictable and easy to control. Breaks are Meh, they take a firm grip. The pic looks like recent rubber, and modern bias tires are not as sticky as radials, but light-years better than what I rode around on in the eighties.

It's a little heavy but low and the upright seating position will give you good control.
>>
>>17371047

Nah, old 650 standards like that will be pretty manageable if you don't try to go full retard the first month you're riding. Just respect the machine and don't try to ride beyond your ability. You'll be fine.

The only other thing is make sure you're tall enough and strong enough to move it around easily. Nothing worse than a bike that's just too bulky and heavy for you to properly get out of a parking spot or something.

My parents were pretty resistant to the idea of me getting a street bike (had dirtbikes previously to that). That said, once I turned 18 and moved out they didn't have a say in the matter anyway.

They reacted a little nervously when I purchased my first, but apparently it didn't make them nervous enough to offer to help pay for gear or anything.

Now my dad is a pretty handy reference for information on old bikes, he never rode regularly or anything, but he was an exporter back in the 80's.

Dad used to race motocross and spent six months or so writing for a bike mag--stopped riding before I was born, but has been very supportive, wrenches with me, bitches about the price of "classic CB500s" and such on Craigslist. ("They weren't worth that even when they were new!") If he gets a raise he'll probably get a bike and we can hoon together.

Mom has been astonishingly supportive given her general neuroticism and total lack of familiarity with motorcycles, even up to taking a small accident (in which I broke my foot) in stride. I suspect she's putting a lot of effort into it. Either that or she wants me dead or crippled, I guess.

desu I can see the appeal, it certainly depends on like where you live and what sort of riding you do. I've had my SV650 for a month and I love it, but I can definitely see how people would want a super comfy cruiser. I've sat on my dad's V-rod and its gloriously comfy. I mean shit, the SV isn't really a supersport but after an hour or two my butt is still sore. And I live in arizona so 90% of the roads are just straight lines.

Cruisers are honestly great for long term comfy non-aggressive riding. Sport bikes are what you want for taking corners fast and quick maneuvers but in the long rides they get uncomfortable far more easily than "relaxed" bikes.

Comfy non- aggressive riding is best riding

I mean, I thought it was pretty comfy. And he got it for like, $8k from a friend because they were really close friends, and I guess jarheads are bad at math or something idk. That's a pretty good deal for a bike that's usually 18 grand, and it's in perfect condition.

>>17371960

ex. Speed limit is 35, I'm going 37-39, car behind me rides my ass, they end switching lanes and gunning it past me.

Now I can understand one car doing it every now & then, but it's been happening to me all the time in the last year. Is my speedometer broke or what? Or are people just being dicks?

Motorcycle speedo's usually show 10% faster than you're actually going, so you're probably going slightly under the limit and pissing them off.

The cb350 looks best, but he's right about part availability. At that price, you could get the 91 nighthawk 250 from that bird in gig harbor (900 usd offer up), any selection of Magnas (~1500 at dealership), or the off-brand scooter I'm selling in Tacoma. (Bajaj legend. 300 usd and a new petcock)

Expand your search area a little. I don't know if you're from here, but public transport will get you fairly well anywhere. Draw a 200 mile circle, then ride back.

I didn't know /o/ had a motorcycle general but it's convenient. I'm doing some writefaggotry and I know next to nothing about bikes. Thankfully it's just a background prop but I feel I should go the extra mile and at least make it appropriate.

It's 2005/2006 in south east Texas, and two knucklehead high school kids in a small town are building/repairing a project bike they bought for a fifty spot from some dead beat. What kind of bike would it be, for that time period and area? All I know about bikes are dirt bikes, Harley Davidson, and sports bikes so streamlined and angular they could be believably be passed off as the independently functioning dick of a Transformer. Oh, and mopeds I guess.

Apologies if it's a dumb question, but I felt I should at least ask people who might know then writing "It's a harley hurr hurr."

I try to at least always wear helmet (full-face right now) and gloves. Thinking about picking up a 3/4 helmet soon but it's so hard for me to find one that doesn't look stupid as fuck to me. I've seen some with clear face shields that you can flip up or down similar to full-face that don't look quite as bad, but I'm not sold on it. Aside from that my only other real hard no is flip flops, I will never ride without close-toed shoes of some sort.

Making an accurate speedometer economically is actually quite a task. Final drive or wheel driven speedos provided reasonable accuracy for reasonable cost. For absolute accuracy, you'd have to account for (at the very least) actual tire circumference, which will change based on wear, inflation pressure, temperature, etc.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that the first thing I thought when I saw this bike was "You know, I actually want to ride that." I like how it looks. Fuck me, though; I don't know shit about riding bikes or have the money to get one. Just another thing to add to the list of 'cool shit to do eventually.'

It was just a collection of posters that said "WEAR YOUR GEAR, OR WEAR THE ROAD"
The one that stuck out the most was this picture of a bike laid out on its side, an ambulance driving away, and it looked like someone had dumped a barrel of kool-aid onto the road.

Some guy saw me staring at the poster, and he nudges me on the shoulder and goes, "Nobody bleeds that much. They're just trying to scare people from getting on bikes."

You've got to be joking thinking you'll ride a bike like that in SEA traffic.

A 250 dual sport is perfect there imo since it's nimble and eats up potholes and can jump curbs, but still has the power to get out of trouble.
>>
>>17373106
I'm a noob, but wouldn't an large air-cooled engine really, really suck in SEA climate? Just my little 234cc bakes me pretty well.

They're designed off balance for "character."
I'd rather build a more robust m/c industry than eat shit for another 80 years. They bought out the only American sportbike maker, and promptly ran it aground...
Shit for 80+ years. Compare any Indian, ever.
Leaves you roadside. Only saving grace is passing grandpas who carry entire garages in their saddlebags.
Comfortably swinging around 1200cc minimum? I heard they may make a 500, with GIANT FRAME FAIRINGS...
I totally want to fit in with the other orthodontists in the cul-de-sac. That's life goal no 1.

Meant to ride somewhere today, got bored in the morning and decided to work on the bike a bit.
Spent the entire day working on it.
One small thing turns into I should do that that other thing. Literally started with I should check my fluid levels. Honestly prefered it to be honest, bikes run better than it has in a while. Was indeed a productive day.

>>17373238
only if you mount the front tire backwards

I think the helmet fits fine, but maybe I'm wearing at the wrong angle? Or I have no neck. It's pretty thicc so I don't think I could fold it comfortably.

God #($&ing #($&it Mr. Bun-Bun! I was having a wonderful night ride. Went through the twisties in the gardens, spooled on over the industrial park and just fucked around with the empty roads, generally having a lovely evening. But then, Mr. Bun-Bun jumps out in front of me. Saw him way the fuck off in the distance, and switched lanes. Then he hops over into my lane. So I switch back to the far side. Everything seems great, but then not 10 feet out he jumps right back in front of me. *thump* What the hell man? I don't need this shit on me. Why the hell couldn't you pick someone else to assist your suicide? WTF Mr. Bun-Bun?
