So if you take say an early 80s Honda Goldwing 1100 and strip all the fairings and junk off, does it serve as a decent nekkid bike, or is it still pigfat?

I'm new to bikes and looking for input. So far I've checked out the Honda Africa Twin and XR650 and the BMW f700gs. Between the Hondas I like the Africa Twin much better, but I like the f700gs much more than either. This will be my first bike aside from my grandpas 80's cb750 I learned to ride on. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome. I'm 6'2" and 235 lbs for reference. It will be used on the road 70% of the time and off road 30%. I live in rural GA where the roads don't get much maintenance(not third world bad though)
>>
>>17368775
the suspension and gearing are still the same so it will still be pigfat.
>>
>>17368777
F700GS is a great middleweight road focused ADV
AT is the best off road machine at that size, but not as good on road with the 19" front and soft suspension
>>
>>17368777
if you're looking at the BMWs, spend the extra little bit on the f800gs, the extra power will be nice and it's going to be a bit better suited to off road riding while losing almost nothing in on road performance.
>>

F700gs and the crf1000l are two very different bikes.

f700gs
>75 horsepower
>460lbs wet
>6.6ish Inches front and rear travel
>19 inch cast wheel front

Africa Twin crf1000l
>94 horsepower
>500-530lbs wet (standard versus dct)
>9 some inches front travel, 8 some inches rear
>21 inch front tire

One is a baby bike, the other a large dirt bike capable of highway speeds and traveling the world.

Husqvarna 701, or wait until the KTM 790 platform comes out next year and is inevitably way better than the F800GS.
>>
>>17368822
10 year old bike that hasn't been updated except for odds and ends. Over priced for what it is. The AT is the freshest and best out there right now, I'd say the triumph tiger 800xc is second. KTM is working on an 800 to fight the AT, I suspect BMW is scrambling to do the same.

Husky 701 doesn't come close to the GS bikes and the AT. He wants to do 70+% on road. Don't lie and tell me the 701 is comfortable for hours on end at 80mph cruising on the highway to get to off-road trails across the country, because versus the GS700 and up and the AT its not. It does probably handle off-road better though.

The review I watched on the AT said it was the best off road but one of the worst on road.

>>
>>17368836

>>
>>17368840
It's not bad on road, it's just not the best out of the adv bikes many of which are road bikes with spoked rims and dirt tires. Ever ride a Yamaha super tenere? Pig fat couch with off-road tires. It's a nice bike, but it's pointless off the road when compared to the AT.

It's the jeep wrangler versus a Cherokee argument. They both can go off-road "ish" in stock form but one is better for sure. The wrangler can handle highway speeds but it's not going to drive like the Grand Cherokee which is a lifted car.
>>
>>17368834
It's no Goldwing but it's totally fine, way better than my DRZ. I did 1000 miles home from Moab in one day and my ass didn't hurt. Unless you plan on doing a ton of long distance touring on the highway and no actual offroading the 701 is better imo, better offroad, better around town.

I think honestly if you lined up all the 800+ adv bikes they are all decent in their own ways and you could argue they are all capable within reason. Some are more suited than others all of them will get you to where you need to go.

Some guys need a 1200 to travel the world and carry hundreds of lbs of gear. Other guys get on 660 teneres (we can't get them in North America), KLR650s, old africa twin 650/750 and travel light.

DO what feels right, a KLR650 will get you up to 80mph for a few hours, but I'd rather be on a gs1200 with heated seat and gloves and cruise control. That same GS will sluggishly with enough skill make it through the terrain a KLR650 will, but there is a reason they have a "bmw" lift for picking up dropped couches on wheels.

I think ironbutt is the only major one.

Ive done 13-14hr 600+ mile days through mostly back highways / twisties, I think Im going to do the saddlesore 1000 this summer as well. Long distance is ez, just get some helmet speakers, a camel back, a wrist throttle rest thing (pic related) if you don't have cruise, and make sure you stop to eat every now and then.

Also pick routes that arent boring as fuck but still have a decent speed limits.

Tell them what you are looking for (color, type, internal sunvisor or not etc) and let them tell you.

I distinctly remember having this discussion before here, and it's the same thing everytime.

So, it's a scrambler?

>>17370184
works for me since now i know what i need to check , one question then
Quick Release or Double-D?
>>

You got excellent wear and value from those parts!

What the fuck are those rotors

what a hot mess.

I really want that, looks like it's based off of the brutale 800?
>>
>>17370193
Matter of preference I think, I like Quick Release. But try both and see what feels better for you

So I tracked down info on replacement sprockets and a chain for my '82 CM250C (was more of a chore than I expected, Honda numbers are all obsolete with no replacement numbers). About to order them up (JTF328.14, JTR279.32 and a JT 520.104 x-ring chain), and looking for the correct tool. Do most 'chain breakers' also act as master-link presses, or do I need to get a separate tool for pressing the new link?
>>
>>17370193
Doesn't really matter. quick is a pain to adjust the first time. D's come with a snap on the strap for you to cut off, as it whips you in the neck at speed.

>>17370223
Nope, and the proper tool is either expensive OR ordered direct from China.

If it were my cm250, I'd be ordering the "HD" non-o-ring chain and the non-press-fit spring clip master link. But that's just me, I lube my chain weekly.

First time posting here. Working on my 07 Suzuki Boulevard C50 and needed some advice. Trying to change out the spark plugs, but I can't find the damn things. Got everything off, but the only two places that look right turn out to just be hoses. Any videos out there that point me in the right direction? Checked youtube and only vids I found are for later models.

what bike do you ride, and what colour is it.
what jacket and pants will you be wearing?
You should consider this when you buy a helmet, just as you should consider what shirt you put on in the morning.
Plain block colours are best. Gloss is better than matte. Designs are fine if they are minimal and tasteful, and compliment the rest of your outfit/bike.
you don't need to look ugly to be safe.

They're all essentially just polystyrene encased in fibreglass for the most part lad. I got an £80~ one from that shop and have been using it for 2 years. As long as it's comfy then it's all aiite. A helmet isn't going to protect you when a lorry decides to drive over your head.

guess the more i drive the less i will care for a "high expensive more protective helmet"

Not necessarily. I was thinking of eventually moving onto a more expensive one at some point. Gonna go for my big boy license in about a week

The 1980's were full of them, Japanese UJM's with suffixes like L, K, LTD, CSR... This is a KZ1000CSR which Kawasaki sold as a Police bike under the name KZ1000P

That an XR in the back?
>>
>>17370381
Yeah its my buddies xr200. It is pretty beat and needs a new rear shock to be rideable which is why its apart. My first bike was the rm250 in the back and i learn a lot from riding that thing.
>>
>>17370416
I thought so, first "street" bike I had was an xr600 I made legal.
You honestly do get a lot from dirt bike, and you can thrash them around pretty good without too much worry.

more expensive != more protective, but the "reputable" makers all do pretty well at every price point with their full-face helmets.
>>
>>17370466
define reputable makers so i know which brands to avoid

whats a good helmet brand for round heads?

New shit.
>>
>>17370478
alright, I call "reputable" the brands that control their own manufacturing, rather than just have a contract manufacturer in China put their name on something and send it over. So that would be NOT be distributor house brands, some brand only sold in a particular chain shop... A few years ago BMW had to recall a helmet because it was made by some outfit somewhere, and BMW is not in the helmet manufacturing business, they are in the accessories sales business, what do they know about helmets?

And of course avoid stuff named "outlaw", "leather up", or anything else that markets itself as being the least helmet you can buy. Bell, HJC, Shoe, Arai, Shark, there's others, those guys just make helmets. That's what you want to look for. If the helmet says "TMS" on the outside and "Zhejiang Bio industry & trade co LTD" on the label on the inside... Just say no.
