I may have gone full autistic someone let me know if I'm too far gone.

Yesterday, I went to test ride a bike and was told that "motorcycle dealers" don't do test rides in New York. I called a few others from my work phone today and got told the same when I asked if I could schedule a test ride.

Today I doxed a huge swath of Yamaha Motors employees since Yamaha doesn't have a simple bleeding e-mail contact point.

I'm down in my cups right now halfway through a long diatribe about why this is terrible and what can I fucking do to ride a fucking bike before I buy it.

Is it way too over the top to blast these poor dozen or so souls with my drunk ramblings about the state of purchasing a motorcycle on Long Island.
>>
>>17362582

Its a fucking bike. If you like the specs. Buy it and stfu
>>
>>17362582

>>

Nope, 30 years old, licensed and everything.

I don't look or talk like a shitbag, I'm finally making enough to where I feel comfortable buying a new bike.

For some reason every Yamaha Dealer on the Island claims they don't do test rides, some bullshit about insurance and liability, yet Harley and Triumph do....

Engines are broken in at the factory or dealership.
You think anyone is going to force a customer to sit at 2k rpm for 20 minutes minimum to make sure the lifters are mated unless they wipe their camshaft smooth?

That being said semi hard break in is correct, plenty of people pussy foot about it and don't seat the rings and then burn oil.

Hey guys, got a bike 3 months back

I have a daily commute of 30~ miles (60 both way) mainly on the highway, and I had a few close calls where cars start merging into me and feel spooked, I ride around town but still.

My coworker suggested getting a louder exhaust so cars hear me around them, but right now I need you to give me confidence senpai

also pic is my baiku
>>
>>17362835
Go watch any manufacturer bike assembly and testing videos.
They run the bikes in on a dyno. Redline every gear.

Break in should be high load with low RPM

High load causes the rings to expand and seat
Low rpm keeps things settled until everything is seated
>>
>>17362835
Well the bikes are assembled and tested in Japan so they've been run at least once, but I don't believe in redlining straight away.
>>
>>17362842
is it your keys?
>>
>>17362835
>Source or you're a faggot
The fact that your camshaft lobes aren't perfect circles after 70 miles is all the proof you need.

>>17362866
>>
>>17362797
You do know most modern bike engines are designed to be broken in at normal running speeds?
And running them in at anything but causes damage to the bore/piston/rings and a short life for all three.
>>
>>17362850
Loud exhaust won't help when the cars are in front of you. Best bet is to be very aware and ride like cars are out to get you. And give em a ole honk when they inevitably try to merge through you. Use the bikes agility to your advantage.
>>
>>17362850
Loud exhaust is overrated.
I have a cruiser thats all stock and like that its quiet. Just be mindful and an aggressive rider if need be

Ask any engine builder who does dump break in. You think they run the engine like a pussy for 500 miles? Full warm-up, then run the living duck out of it. Same way you break in a virgin. Just don't hit the cervix too hard.

I've got a chunk of change that I could use to buy a used dual sport bike, or since summer would be almost done with by the time I'm cleared for 4 weeks vacation I might wait for spring 2018 and just enjoy my more expensive theoretical bike around local areas.

Impact driver *gently*, with a piece of wood backing up what you are hammering on. This is for the Phillips screws. If you mean the brass jets, if they don't come out with a blade screwdriver, best to leave them in and spray with brake cleaner.

Guise need advice.

Returning biker. 10yrs ago I was doing wheelies on R1. After a hiatus I want a new bike but im being inclined to go the cruiser route. Have a shadow phantom 2012 in sight but dunno it the switch to vtwin cruising after r1 would be a bit different?

I have never owned a vtwin cruiser. What am I in for?

It entirely depends on what you find desirable. If you want a wheelie machine, don't get a cruiser.

I mean, you said it yourself - you stopped riding a wheelie machine a decade ago.

Vtwins have power from idle to midrange then it tapers off, but being a cruiser the steering is a little eh and the brakes could be better.
That said, if a nice day out with the missus is on the cars, why bother rushing around? Just keep extra room for emergency stops and plan corners/maneuvers a bit better.

buy a shitbike for some months before, you will learn what NOT to do.
And believe me there are lots of things.

If you've never ridden, any bike is fun anyways, just get a drz400,SV650,Xj6...

Do the beginner mistakes with them, eventually crash with it and not die because they weren't big bikes, go to the Triumph dealer and buy the street cup, be happy you're not dead and you wont drop this one, or run without oil..etc

Second, the SV is already rather roomy. Indeed it has a longer wheelbase than the MT-09.
I think the mt series has more comfortable seats than your SV (I'm assuming you're one of those assholes who bought the al7, otherwise disregard this entire post) but it might be different with the xsrs.

It's a classically styled naked bike with more power and more goodies than the SV. Yes I do own an AL7, but I'm not the guy you've been replying to.

There really isn't anything I straight-up dislike about my SV, maybe that my knee-angle is fairly extreme. Just some more power and stuff like traction control and a rain mode since I am an all year rider.

The bikes in your picture are UJMs. They were, in a way, the sportbikes of their day before the retards in charge of marketing in nipland decided to split on perfectly versatile machine into sportbikes, sport tourers, tourers, naked, hyper nakeds, adventure sports touring, super naked sports cafe adventure, etc, to boost sales and encourage n+1. They also aped british style (but not british unrelaibility). They sometimes leaned a little towards western designs with forward pegs and sometimes they didn't. They had handlebars you could adjust instead of clipons with varying heights you had to replace entirely. They dominated over harley. They were the best bikes ever made, and now the closest thing you can get is a yamaha FZ-type.

You should definitely get one instead of a luiser if the last owner took good care of it.

I'm a 6'4", 286 lb (130kg) guy, would pic related a good beginner bike for me (very first ride)?
>>

To be fair, the average will be pretty close to the maximum if nobody cruises through there at walking pace and it gets recorded.

The Vstrom is a very good beginner choice, apart from the lack of memes.

AFAIK, any ~600cc machine is powerful enough for me, that's no concern of mine.

I'm asking the model especially, whether it's a good bike for a beginner guy like me?

My other choice would be a CBF600, it's surprisingly comfortable to me for a naked bike (I've been on a Hornet and a Suzuki GS500, those felt like I'm cramped on the bike)
>>
>>17365008
I'm not really in the mood of moving into Poland and becoming an elite couter-terrorist soldier...
>>
>>17365035
Really, any bike you feel comfortable on.
You are tall, with probably long legs. Most bikes are designed by japs, for japs so you will always feel varying degrees of cramped on almost every bike except ADV bikes (like the Vstrom).

Use the motorcycle ergonomics sim in the OP to get a broad idea.

In short: Yes, adventure bikes are good for tall people.
>>
>>17365035
Yes, the Vstrom has the perfect amount of power for a beginner. Enough to be usable, forgiving enough to not kill you if you twist your wrist a bit.
It's also reliable and I guess easy to work on.
Don't know about the CBF. Check cycle-ergo.com if you're concerned with riding position.
>>
>>17365035
Test ride each one for 30+ minutes. Get it hot, run through the gears, try powershifting at high revs (if you can't do it at all the gearbox is probably already fucked. worn gears/dogs just bounce off eachother after a while, and doom is imminent for normal shifting. second goes first.)

Don't fall for memes. Don't bother with cycle-ergo. Experience shit for yourself.

Thanks for the advices! Are there any common model-specific problems I should be aware of?
>>

I'm 6'4 and had the cbf600 as riding school bike - it's pretty boring, weirdly unstable at low speeds (had problems doing the walk-speed slalom test) and my knees hurt after 1.5hours of riding.
A friend wanted to sell me his vstrom, it's comfy but had too many miles for my taste. Now I'm riding a fz6 fazer which is quite nice, did a 4 hour tour last weekend without problems.

it's not the cost so much as the logistics, esp in a touring context--1000 miles ain't that much, am I gonna have to carry around a couple changes of oil all the time and find places to drop off the used oil every town I come to, etc.
>>
>>17365074
I met the CBF600 in riding school, too (also all the other ones except the V-Strom).

What do you mean "boring"? Sluggish?

Are you some kind of meme?

Just joshing, suzuki is alright. Honda is less reliable than the memes say and pretty boring. It's not as bad as the 919 (garbage for the money) but there are faster, cheaper, sturdier bikes out there and none of them say "honda" on them.

No, I literally had been riding 11 years in motoGP and had 7 years worth of trail-riding experience before I decided to get a license and buy a beginner-bike that I could compare back-to-back to another beginner bike

That's the point, you were shit at riding back then and had nothing to compare it to, so saying it felt unstable or whatever is completely pointless.

weight on legs, outside leg holding onto the tank

if the gee forces aren't enough to keep you planted you don't need to hang off and are just sperging out over lean angle reduction. protip: your contact patch actually gets larger with a bit of lean and most of your tread is probably on the sides of the tires.
