Hey /o/ I'm really wanting to get into riding and was wondering what y'all would think of this bike?
YouTube and my mechanically inclined brother would help with the carb. As for riding I'd take a course and I have a coworker who said she wouldn't mind showing me how to ride.
What kind of questions should I ask or should I consider something else as a beginner?
I've heard that as a new rider it's better to start off on smaller bikes

Pretty good,

Friday night I rode to the top of a local mountain, avoided getting ticketed by 2 cops in unmarked cars when my spidey senses started tingling. Met some dude on a TL1000 practicing Japanese u turns up at the top, chatted to him for a bit and raced him down as soon as we passed the cops.

Saturday rode to the beach for a friend's party, then took off and went for a 2.5 hour ride to the next city and back on a curvy cliffside road

Today I had to work but left my heated grips on last night so the battery was dead. Took my brothers 80s sport bike to work which was fun hammering on with all the fairings rattling around.

>What kind of questions should I ask or should I consider something else as a beginner?

You'll tear your hair out trying to make it run right and you'll end up not getting much joy out of it. I've been there, done that and yeah you'll learn plenty about bikes in general pouring money down that pit, but you won't learn to ride till you buy something that works.

You'd be better off with something that's been dropped a few times to the point where it's ugly and cheap.
>>
>>17359129
>>17359292
Agree totally. Shit idea, brother, no offense. Buying a broke down bike to learn to ride on is like buying a project car to learn to drive. It will likely end up a garage queen and I know exactly how frustrating that is. Anon's idea to buy an ugly but functional beater for cheap is spot on. You'll probably drop it, too, so you'll never notice. If you want to tinker, fix the beater up.

Post some pretty pics of your bike /o/. Show and tell, wanna know how you like yours and tell me what you want to tell about your bike.

This is mine, bought it with 93kkm on the odo, it was all original aside from turn signals and hugger. I put in a projector HID into the original light housing, swapped the rear light housing into a clear one with integrated turn signals and got turn signals with integrated tail and brake lights. Getting new rear tire today. Gonna put on a louder exhaust, bar end mirrors and new grips soon.

Try a rebel/nighthawk or magna/saber depending on size preference. The 250's hover between 9-1200. The 750's around 1500.
Both are tough as nails, 100,000 mile engines. Only problem with a Honda is weak electricals, but the four come old enough for two-wire operation. (In an emergency, run straight to ignition and back)

And, parts will always be plentiful.
In an pinch, only acceptable suzuki is the Katana. Don't let these douchebags tell you differently.

I don't ride, but I want to, a friend is selling a kawasaki kz400, for 500 dollars, I've seen it run and know it's in working order looks decent but I didn't take pictures.

Can I go fast on it though? I don't know much about bikes yet, but I'd guess that 400cc won't take a grown man very far very fast.

A beater is a beater. You want something that has been crashed, but also owned and used long enough to necessitate being FIXED.

Hearing things like "new tapered roller steering head bearings" and "resprung forks" from the seller is good shit, even if it's a naked ninja 250 with a dirtbike headlight and no working tachometer.

hey!
how's it going fags?

question: now that i've got my permit, how can i avoid ending up on the organ donor list?
i've had a car since i was seventeen, got into 2 minor and one major accident until now, one that would tear me up if i was riding the baiku. being the huge metalhead that i am, i tend to listen to music whilst driving and i usually end up going very fast. there are no speed limits here in ethiopia, nor are there speeding tickets so i'm fairly certain that i'll end up mangled at this point if i don't take precautions. what are some often neglected but necessary rules that you find hard to follow despite knowing that you should? think the equivalent of not wearing seat-belt whilst driving.
baiku is yamaha dt175 btw
>>
>>17359626
if you are turning, never let off the throttle. if the throttle opening must change it must get bigger.

this simple rule is the difference between lowsiding when the front tucks/getting "lucky" and highsiding when the lightened rear skids at 25% lean and making it through a basic corner.
>>
>>17359635
>if you are turning, never let off the throttle. if the throttle opening must change it must get bigger.

this is simply not true.

>>
>>17359640
It's good advice for a beginner. If you don't do it right, the front might wobble a bit. If you really don't do it right you'll die, especially in hard corners.

The nuances shouldn't be given as advice. You figure them out yourself.
>>
>>17359644
don't get me wrong if you are going wide round a corner the best advice is generally just lean in harder but you should not be afraid to gently let the throttle out if need be. Going too hot into a corner that you didn't know tightens can be just as bad as dropping the throttle if you are too afraid to slow down to an appropriate speed mid turn.

Do you guys know if there is anything special I have to do with this rear mount bolt passage? It isn't budging even though I removed the bolt already. I wonder if it's seized
>>
>>17359670
Generally, people crash when they lean more and then start to cut the throttle to slow down because that's what they'd do in an FWD car to eliminate that imminent understeer feeling. You can't add lean and cut throttle. I mean, sometimes you can, but sometimes you can't. You kind of feel it before it's too late.

But you can always add lean and maintain throttle (maybe add a a little, you won't speed up if you needed it), and add throttle and lean, but not too much throttle or you'll flip.

>>
>>17359892
It's called riding, not driving.
You join some forums (you're in one right now), introduce yourself, ask if someone's from your area and meet up. Alternatively, go to a cafe / restaurant / scenc spot near the touge and chat up people at random.
git gud by practicing, don't get cocky. Stay away from trucks when merging.
>>
>>17359903
Do people enjoy riding with beginners? Or do you need to practice a lot before riding with normal riders?
>>

It depends on what kind of riding you're doing but where I live people are pretty nice to beginners. If you're too slow for them just let them ride ahead and don't push beyond your limits; they'll likely wait for you at the end of the stretch of road.
Me, I like riding through the city with any type of rider; nobody really gets left behind regardless of skill and you still get to dick around on bikes.
In general, it can be refreshing for "old dogs" to watch newbies flail around trying to do something correctly and having fun doing it.
>>
>>17359779
It needs to fit your head shape. Cheekpads can be replaced if they're too tight/loose, but a pressure point on your forehead because you blindly bought a helmet online can't be fixed. Ignore brand (within reason - you don't NEED a Shoei/Arai, but check safety ratings online) because fit is 100% the most important thing. Some points to consider:

- Internal sun visor
- Type of strap: I won't go back to a double D ring after the ease of use of a ratchet system
- Older model variants: you can generally buy a 2015 or 2016 helmet that's functionally identical to a modern one, but with lower prices. Only difference will be the graphics.
- A properly fitting helmet should feel snug. Don't confuse that with "painfully snug", but don't get a size up because it's slightly looser and more comfortable.

Go to a store, tell them you're keen on buying, but you want to try stuff on. Find something that fits you well, ask them to leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Talk bikes with them, dick around on your phone, but get the thing on your head for a while to check for pressure points.

99% of the time I stop behind a vehicle I pull either to the left or the right depending on spacing, stopping as if I was going to lane split. Basically if a hit comes from the rear I won't get pancakes between two vehicles.

Also always keep it in gear at stops. Sometime if three cars are stopped behind me I'll relax in neutral because it would take a full speed semi to overcome the inertia.

But yeah, even atgatt doesn't keep you from getting crushed.

pressure point on my nose was the problem with a helmet during practices so i understand the importance of "not being annoying" (tho my ears were red as fuck and it hurt me .
not paying attention for brand , i'm leaning towards shoie for price/quality (from what little i know)
i wont pay for "brand new helmet 2017 helmet" if i can get the exact same helmet with a different color from 2016 for 10€ less or 100€ less
practice helmet pressure point was ears , maybe because i have 2 piercings at top of each
>internal sun visor
ok thats something i didn't pay attention
>>
>>17360164
600rr is way too much money for how scraped up it is.

I would personally go for the f4i, but SV650's are good bikes too - I had one for 3 years with no issues. Just depends if you want the vtwin grunt or i4 power.
>>
>>17360195
Pressure points will sometimes go away though with time as well. I had horrible, horrible pressure points on my ears with an fg17, eventually the foam in the helmet wore enough there that it was still a bit uncomfortable after a few hours but not painfull. Wore the helmet for 2 years.

Had some mild pressure points on icon alliance GT hat replaced it, but I only really noticed them after wearing the helmet for 14 hours straight. The return trip had no pressure points at all. Honestly I like the alliance GT a lot more than the FG17, its not a bad helmet considering the price of it... Flip down is awsome for touring and earplugs are cheap.

uuuh it would be a major disappointment if not, i mean the 690 is under 150kg dry so one extra cylinder and a lot less frame shouldnt result in much more than that.

Most people are poor retards that don't realize the vast majority of insurance rates are comprised of the collision/comprehensive coverage (which is optional). If you finance a bike, the lender will require you to have full coverage. If you buy a very expensive bike, it's typically in your best interest to have full coverage. The issue is that no one is going to insure your new BMW HP4 or Panigale 1299 at a fair rate considering how much more accident prone motorcycles are.

So you end up with what you see in pic related.

The best thing to do is just to buy older used bikes that you don't care about so you don't waste money on comprehensive/collision. A ninja 250, GSXR 1000, and GSXR 600 all cost me around $500/year to insure

my bike doesn't have a max or a min line. it just has a plain circle and the manual says you should be able to see the oil level in the top half of the circle.
If I fill it to the point where the oil level is halfway up when warmed up, it will fill past the top of the sight glass when the bike has been turned off for a couple hours and the oil flows back down from all the passageways into the sump.
>>
>>17361230
not turned on and having stood for a while is when you should check (on a wet sump).

If its to high you should drain some out.

So I'm a bit concerned... About 600 miles ago, I lubed up Baiku's chain and tightened it up a bit as it was just over 1" of slack. Now that I'm back from a longer (400+ mile) trip I just gave her an oil change (yuck) and cleaned the chain. Her chain is super loose again. I can tighten it up, but should needing two turns after around 600 miles concern me? The rear sprocket doesn't look like the diagrams in the 'worn sprocket' page of the service manual.

similar situation here. went to pick my son up at his apartment complex and when I pulled in there was a Ninja on its side. We picked it up and my son found the owned.

The owner had bought the bike right after a divorce, put 20 miles on it from the dealer to the apartment and realized he had made a mistake and was trying to sell it. It had been sitting there so long the kickstand had sunk into the asphalt causing the bike to tip over.

How to check oil level and fill oil on wet sump? I am confused now
How long should I wait after having it run for some minutes to get it to temperature?
If I understand correctly, waiting this amount of time is needed so all the oil flows back into the oil pan. Why not check it when it has stood for some hours then? Is it because of the expansion of the oil when warm?

>if you hurt your hands in a crash they fall off
Broken fingers and wrists are less life altering than broken ankles. No one's going to notice you can't hold a coffee mug the same way, they might notice you can't walk a mile anymore because you have a club foot.

>>17361838
Who cares about road rash on your legs? Again, severity matters. Kevlar jeans with little pads aren't going to be the deciding factor in a broken leg very often.
>>
>>17361900
I'd rather lose my legs than my hands 2bh, you can't do shit if you don't have hands, at least there are alternative ways of getting around with fucked up legs/feet.

I know someone who got really fucked up in a bad wreck and broke practically everything in his body. He seemed to heal up fine everywhere except his left leg. It pains me to see him walk.

>>17361604
I do most of the time, but I lost my gloves somewhere when I went off-roading yesterday. My hands are really fucking rashed up from the rough grips and my fingers were sliding all over the place because they were muddy.

>>17361822
>riding pants
>not important
They're more helpful than a jacket in my opinion. In most crashes the first thing to hit the ground will be your hips and they will take most of the road rash.
Still, I don't wear riding pants 99% of the time because they're a hassle compared to a jacket which I can just throw on top of a shirt.

When I shift down on my ninja 300, sometimes I hear a bit of a grinding noise on one of the gears, is this something to be worried about?
