So just rolled 800 miles since I got baiku, got one of those 'grunge brush' contraptions and cleaned the chain. Slicked her up with some 80w90 gear lube. The chain was a tad beyond 1" of play, so I tightened her up two turns. Engine oil is still right at the full mark on the stick, haven't seen a drop under her. The brake shoes were good when I put new tires on middle of last month. Only issues I'm seeing are a rear drum brake squeal at certain points, and a leaky fuel bowl drain needle. Replaced the needle, but no joy, so when I park her for the night I close the fuel valve and let her idle till dry.

Anything else I should be checking on a 35yo best baiku that just passed 13k (about 800 since last oil change/general checkup before I bought her)?

A lot of people buy used suits since it's pretty common for barely used suits to end up on eBay or CL when people grow out of them. I also learned this year that suits come out yearly, so January to March you can buy the previous years suits for a good discount from big places like revzilla, I bought an $1100 GP pro for $850, smaller size were $750.

Last bike I purchased was a used Harley at a Victory dealer in Massachusetts in 2014. It was October so close to the end of the riding season.

The bike was an 06 with 2,000 miles on it (had been traded in at a Porche dealership). Blue book was $11,800 and that was the price on the bike.

Told the salesman I only had $8,000 (insurance proceeds from totaled bike) and the salesman got the owner. Owner OK'd it on the spot. I then asked if he'd throw winter storage in on top of that ($300 value) and he said OK.

Never hurts to ask.

So...
>end of season
>returning customer
>bike not their primary product line
>probably stole it from the Porche dealership
>dealt directly with the owner

I'm looking to buy a new top-notch full face helmet for street riding, touring, and occasional track days to replace my collection of cheap shitty helmets.

There's a crazy number of helmet options out there, so I need to find ways to narrow it down. I'd like to start by limiting myself to a short list of brands that are well established, proven, and relatively commonly available. So far I was limiting myself to...

>Shoei
>Arai
>AGV
>Schuberth

Shoei and Arai are of course, the industry standards. AGV and Schuberth seem to have a solid reputation. Any other manufacturers I should be including in this list? I'm willing to spend up to $900 if it's the perfect helmet, but I'm probably trying to spend closer to $500.

you dont harden anything by adjusting preload. all you do is change the height.

if you gave it more preload on the rear the rear gets higher which makes it easier to get into corners but overall less stable.
>>
>>17326167
Yeah I guess that's true now that you mention it.

better than getting to much weight on the front while braking though.

its all about finding a middle ground. I personally added some preload on the rear recently because i was satisfied with corner stability and gained some agility for that.

you add too much and it becomes fickle and gives a feeling of insecurity.
>>
you should adjust the preload according to how heavy you are/your luggage
read your manual.
preload is nothing to do with handling. i.e the bikes suppoused to handle a certain way, and you adjust the preload according to your weight to keep it that way.
preload is not something you adjust to change handling characteristics.
>>
>>17325778
It's ECE. Not having separate models for Europe and NA just for Snell brand perception isn't a strange reason, it's only really Shoei and Arai that persist with it now that HJC has switched.

I've been led to believe it's generally ECE helmets that get used in MotoGP and WSBK (obviously the current race model AGVs, Sharks, HJCs, Nolans etc. only come as ECE) but they're destickered so it's impossible to tell if Marquez has an X-Spirit III or X-Fourteen or Rea is using an RX-7V or Corsair X without looking inside.

There shouldn't be too many places left that insist on SNELL ONLY but Murika gonna Murika. At least it's not MFJ bullshit.
>>
>>17326212
its meant to adjust max travel distance for your shocks yes.

Pics are from a ride I did a couple years ago, up the highway on the front, and down the OHV on the back side, then back to Tucson through Oracle. That's a great day ride, a bit over 100 miles total.

What if there's a cop and you lose your license? I'm more scared of that than crashing.
>>
>>17326785
Not him, but honestly if you're going 230kmph on a bike, you may as well just run. At that speed there is a slim chance they will get a plate.

Either way if you end up getting stopped you're loosing your license for a long time/possibly worse depending on location.
>>
>>17326785
Drop a gear and disappear yo
>>
>>17326785
At that speed no cop is going to try to chase you because they most likely wont catch you and they dont want to risk making you crash and die
>>

140 mph on bike, 150mph in car.
>>

speedos are not accurate

You were going a lil over 100 mph irl
>>
>>17326809
>>17326805
That sounds like retarded bro advice. Surely they'll call other cops saying they spotted a bike going 2fast in some direction.
>>
>>17326785

Anons will feed you a bunch of bullshit, but the truth is that's actually the greatest risk. You're not going to magically run and get away with it every time. No matter how fast your bike it, or how skilled a rider you are, you're going to end up in a jam with no way out eventually. When you do, and you get that triple digit criminal speeding charge or evasion charge, you'll learn the hard way.

After losing my license twice, third strike would have been jail time in my state. That's about when I decided it wasn't worth it, and now I drive like a saint, following traffic law to the letter.

The only exception being the occasional full throttle folly, only in the absolute middle of nowhere, on straight roads with good visibility where no officers could possibly be hiding. Even then, only for very short stretches.

It's more than worth it to buy a proper set of leathers and attend track day.
>>
>>17326825

I know it's not accurate, which is why I stated that it was pegged (as in, actually up against the peg and got there before I ran out of revs, and I kept accelerating a little bit beyond that).
>>
>>17326830
Yeah maybe if youĀ“re dumb enough to to speed that much in a city with cops on every corner, go out to the country

Nobike to training bike

training bike to 500

500 to 600 i4 sport bike
>this is so fast how can anything be faster
etc
Basically just skip straight to a turbo busa
>>
>>17327069
Should I really bother getting a training bike? I was thinking of jumping straight to a 700 cruiser. As long as it handles well and I can put both feet on the ground it's training,r ight?
>>
>>17327084
Cruisers are slow regardless, the only problem for beginner is that they are heavy.

Cruisers?

>this is super slow
to
>this is a little slow
>>
>>17327084
The training bike meme really only applies to powerful, fast, 4 cylinder sportbikes. Starting out on a 750 cc or even a 1200 cc cruiser isn't gonna be too bad except for how heavy they are and their horrible turning radius which might cause you to ride straight off the road in a hard corner (has happened to my friend when he was riding behind me on his Shadow 750 -- my bike took the corner just fine with plenty of lean left and his bike scraped hard parts and caused him to go off the other side of the road).
>>
>>17327110
I like sport bikes because they look cool.
>>
>>17327113
>The training bike meme really only applies to powerful, fast, 4 cylinder sportbikes

If even that. It mostly applies to high strung 600s and insanely powerful liters aka supersports. Something that doesn't hunger for throttle is usually fine, ie:

>Ninja 650
>suzuki bandit
>honda VFR

Racebike, sportbike, pretty big difference. Motorcyclists tend to do the equivalent of starting in a miata instead of a toyobaru because the RUF Yellowbird is a fucking bitch to drive without dying so all sportscars over 1.6l must be deathtraps
>>
>>17327110

So basically I'm better off going for an FZ-09 instead of the R6? Currently on an R3, first bike.
>>
>>17327145
get an hour of test riding in on an R6 and you'll know
>>
>>17327145
Naked bikes don't feel like sport bikes, even if they have good performance. Just try both, also consider what kind of riding you do. As far as low-end torks goes just get a 750 because suzuki a best.
>>
>>17327113
>>17327141
I want a bike with a bit of potential cargo space, so I'm still strongly considering a cruiser over a sport even if it does handle poorly.

I'm new to motorcycles if you couldn't tell.

I didn't pay attention to it when I watched the 2015 race, but it's actually really neat how these 250s are narrow enough that the foot controls stick way out and you can really see them working the shifter and brake. Also kind of funny looking at the mix of race and street patterns.

The #4 was the Motegi track champion in 2016 and he does the world's worst leg dangle, like he's kicking the thing off to do a motocross turn.

>we have a second date tomorrow, my WRX is torn apart for suspension work and I realized my shocks are blown, so got a set coming in tomorrow

I'm not advocating a holocaust or anything, there's still hope for some. I am, however, advocating the constant motivating pressure of public shame.

No

If you stop riding to rest your feet on the ground you won't git gud

>>17327604
It's better to start on a bike that allows you to easily have both feet on the ground. Most dual sports are really tall so you usually end up with just one foot on the ground but they're also pretty light so they're fairly easy to hold up with only one leg as well.
