Nope, I bought it already restored. I guess it was just a hobby project for some rich guy. Got a thick folder of all the receipts for powder coating, rechroming, replacement parts, etc.

Got a pretty good deal on it, too, because the guy said he was sick of turning away people that wanted to make it into a cafe or bobber project. I just had to promise I wouldn't make a retarded custom out of it.

I got in a pretty solid wreck when I was still a kid learning to ride on the street on a 200.

Good rash on most of one arm, and most of my back. Severely sprained knee, ankle, and hip. No broken bones though, and didn't take a blow to the helmet.

After talking a little bit with the paramedics that responded, I choice not to receive treatment. Took a bit to collect myself, twisted the bars as straight as I could get them by bracing the front wheel against a post and yanking, and bent my shifter back into a vaguely usable position.

Rode the bike home and treated my wounds there. No infections, no long term issues, no severe scarring. Personal first aid is a skill you should have.

Get a pair of leather Dainese or Rev'it and you'll look fine, textile armored motorcycle pants are way too bulky to look good on muscular legs, I work out a fair amount and used to mountain bike and backpack a lot and I look like a metalgear in every pair of riding pants because of the hip pads and my sexy hips.

Michigan is a good place for /out/ this time of year.

You want to get a dual sport motorcycle of some kind. Don't be scared of getting something "too powerful", dual sports are all fairly tame, but you do want something that you're comfortable on to start. Seat height and weight will make a difference here. I'd recommend something in the 200-400cc range.

Beyond that, just start finding some trails to ride. State and national forest land tend to be good for this, as you can find forest service roads that are generally perfect for beginners. Power line roads are a good place to start too.

Once you're comfortable riding on those kinds of trails, just fill your good pack with gear and start strapping stuff to your bike. You can get racks or saddlebags which will make it a lot easier, but you can cram quite a bit of gear onto a bike with just bungies and straps too.

whats the range of the electric motor?

poornobike noob here, what resources besides kijiji should I be using to find a used bike? (ontariofag) I'd like to find a wr250r or drz400s and I want to figure what a good price should be. From what I've seen its made me ponder the choice of the klr650 because I think I can get it for a bit less, and it might have better long term returns due to the size difference.
On that note, if someone might be able to provide some insight, as a beginner my minimal research + here suggested the wr25/drz400 would be a good choice and I definitely agree, but where would the klr650 rank against them? If it requires a bit more care to start out - that's fine, I'm not getting this to race around. But due to its size is it a lot more on insurance?

an i4 typically has a 180' crankshaft (except for the R1) and as the crank rotates around to top dead center and bottom dead center the pistons which are reciprocating all stop at the same time (two at the top, and two at the bottom) this causes a stutter as there is no moving reciprocating mass to transfer energy back into the crank to get the pistons moving again. So to get the pistons moving the crank transfers energy to the pistons, as a result you have a constant back and forth of the pistons putting energy into the crank and then crank putting energy back into the pistons

the thing is crossplane i4's (or v8's for that matter) need heavy crank shafts to balance the motor, because the two pistons on the ends of the crank shaft are opposed to each other and one goes up as the other is travelling down, which causes the crank to want to "wobble" like a seesaw in the crank case to fix this the the counter weights for these pistons need to be much heavier than in a 180' crank.
