Confirmed. Honda doesn't seem to care too much about the US market, actually. If they did, they'd have updated the XR650L or released a new bike based on the XR650R to replace it. We love big thumpers.

It's really, really tempting to buy a CB1100, but I would much rather have something more like he CB1300.

Nope, I bought it already restored. I guess it was just a hobby project for some rich guy. Got a thick folder of all the receipts for powder coating, rechroming, replacement parts, etc.

Got a pretty good deal on it, too, because the guy said he was sick of turning away people that wanted to make it into a cafe or bobber project. I just had to promise I wouldn't make a retarded custom out of it.

I'm going to install a cup holder, phone charger, and GPS. Just the way god intended.

This.

I got in a pretty solid wreck when I was still a kid learning to ride on the street on a 200.

Good rash on most of one arm, and most of my back. Severely sprained knee, ankle, and hip. No broken bones though, and didn't take a blow to the helmet.

After talking a little bit with the paramedics that responded, I choice not to receive treatment. Took a bit to collect myself, twisted the bars as straight as I could get them by bracing the front wheel against a post and yanking, and bent my shifter back into a vaguely usable position.

Rode the bike home and treated my wounds there. No infections, no long term issues, no severe scarring. Personal first aid is a skill you should have.
>>
>>17270997

Bikes literally crash themselves.

Basically, if you buy anything but a top of the line sportbike you have an unstable 'good enough for the job' suspension and chassis that will work itself into a knot and slam itself into the ground with glee if you don't have the reflexes and intuition of a motoGP rider.

Major crashes can be avoided by starting on an adequately powered motorbike and exercising a sensible riding style. Minor crashes will happen to almost any novice rider, which is why it's a good idea to start on an cheap, used bike that can get scratched up, and not a brand new bike. The unluckiest of folks get into crashes when someone else runs into them to no fault of their own, but it can't be prevented other than to dress visibly and being cautious at all times.

Toxoplasmosis causes males to give fewer shits about social standards, which is what it takes to like motorcycles. You're louder, noisier, it's less convenient, people assume you're an overgrown child, and if you don't wear gear people will look down on you and if you wear gear people will laugh at the guy walking through walmart in leather pants.

Getting into motorsport is what killed EBR the first time, they didn't have the money to keep up and it bankrupted them. MV is so poor they can only keep one bike in and Aprilia has the backing of piaggio, they've got money coming out the ass. Plus all the japanese companies are private "factory supported" teams, not real factory efforts, no one gives a shit about WSBK on a manufacturer level. Sadly we no longer live in a world where what wins on sunday sells on monday, bikes are sold on hype and spec sheets.

Get a pair of leather Dainese or Rev'it and you'll look fine, textile armored motorcycle pants are way too bulky to look good on muscular legs, I work out a fair amount and used to mountain bike and backpack a lot and I look like a metalgear in every pair of riding pants because of the hip pads and my sexy hips.

Michigan is a good place for /out/ this time of year.

You want to get a dual sport motorcycle of some kind. Don't be scared of getting something "too powerful", dual sports are all fairly tame, but you do want something that you're comfortable on to start. Seat height and weight will make a difference here. I'd recommend something in the 200-400cc range.

Beyond that, just start finding some trails to ride. State and national forest land tend to be good for this, as you can find forest service roads that are generally perfect for beginners. Power line roads are a good place to start too.

Once you're comfortable riding on those kinds of trails, just fill your good pack with gear and start strapping stuff to your bike. You can get racks or saddlebags which will make it a lot easier, but you can cram quite a bit of gear onto a bike with just bungies and straps too.

Seems like a pretty solid strategy to gain attention from a celebrity if you can time it right.

Hey /o/ I need to borrow your expertise. My friend bought a ninja 250 about a year ago, he doesent know much about bikes so his uncle went with him. Anyway he is selling the bike now and I asked him what year ninja, condition etc. He said pic related is an 07 ninja 250 running perfect. Now I'm still a bike noob but that does not look like an 07.

What model is pick related actually? It's some variant of a zx? He would sell to me for $2200 AUD is that a good deal?

That's not a ZX-RR, at any rate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Ninja_ZX-RR) - for starters, the one in your pic has mirrors.

This is what the internet tells me a 2008 Ninja 250 looks like, so I'll go with that.

Should I tell him that or should I try and talk down the price to 2000 seeing as:

2. Its been dropped on the right side.

How much would fixing/replacing the ride side fairings cost?

I wonder why it has a zx-rr sticker on it?

If I'm looking to buy a barebones cycle, basically a beefier dirtbike, what terms should I be looking at?
I'm sick of my inherited pigfat shitheap bike and I want something a little more minimalist, but outside of my own bike I'm not super familiar with them.
Searching 'bare bones motorcycle' and such just brings up custom shops and kits.
>>
>>17273286
dual sport?
Older supersports are pretty bare bones too. They're obviously bloated with plastics but everything is functional.

hybrid, can run on gas/disel/jet fuel and switch to electric when it needs to be quiet.

>One of DARPA's goals in asking for new prototypes: reducing the weight, while retaining all the added functionality.
>Off the shelf, an Alta Motors electric motorcycle weighs 270 pounds. With everything added to the first prototype, including two-wheel drive, the hybrid engine, and the control system, the total weight is 350 pounds. To get that heft back down, Logos is going to need to rework part of the hybrid engine. Originally built for the Parahawk unmanned aerial vehicle program, the engine is liquid-cooled. A new air-cooled engine could do-away with the radiator and shed pounds in the process.

poornobike noob here, what resources besides kijiji should I be using to find a used bike? (ontariofag) I'd like to find a wr250r or drz400s and I want to figure what a good price should be. From what I've seen its made me ponder the choice of the klr650 because I think I can get it for a bit less, and it might have better long term returns due to the size difference.
On that note, if someone might be able to provide some insight, as a beginner my minimal research + here suggested the wr25/drz400 would be a good choice and I definitely agree, but where would the klr650 rank against them? If it requires a bit more care to start out - that's fine, I'm not getting this to race around. But due to its size is it a lot more on insurance?

As I type this I realize I am high and have a lot of questions, but not a very good format for my questions.

>narrower

>smoother
an i4 typically has a 180' crankshaft (except for the R1) and as the crank rotates around to top dead center and bottom dead center the pistons which are reciprocating all stop at the same time (two at the top, and two at the bottom) this causes a stutter as there is no moving reciprocating mass to transfer energy back into the crank to get the pistons moving again. So to get the pistons moving the crank transfers energy to the pistons, as a result you have a constant back and forth of the pistons putting energy into the crank and then crank putting energy back into the pistons

it's some what analogous to engine braking causing the rear wheel to lock up under deceleration, except it happens in fractions of a second where the crank is accelerating and decelerating every revolution

crossplane.jpg
234KB, 955x714px
>>17273578
the thing is crossplane i4's (or v8's for that matter) need heavy crank shafts to balance the motor, because the two pistons on the ends of the crank shaft are opposed to each other and one goes up as the other is travelling down, which causes the crank to want to "wobble" like a seesaw in the crank case to fix this the the counter weights for these pistons need to be much heavier than in a 180' crank.
tl;dr
>smoother
but
>heavier
>slower revving (than an equally well engineered 180')
>>
>>17273618
it's a bike for special forces operators. i'm not special forces, but i did grow up in equatorial congo, and i can definitely see how a bike that can burn any of gas, diesel, or petrol/jetfuel, plus act as a generator to charge my satellite phone, laptop and gps would be useful.

titanium rods, so less weight that needs to be balanced compare that to the gsxr 1000 which hits the same 14500 redline but uses regular stainless con rods
>>
>>17273676
ooohh, cool!
but does hondas design even result in actual better performance? or do riders just assume they get the same wheel lock in deceleration and never bother using its potential?
>>

>>
>>17273543
also where would a dr650 fit into all of these. I suppose it might help if I mention I'll likely be using this bike for something like 60% road 40% off. Planning on 1-3 3-4 hour rides per month.
>>
>>17273696
klr is heaviest and more street oriented
dr650 is a little less powerful but a lot lighter and stil has mediocre suspension though
wr250 has the best suspension and is the lightest but also the weakest engine.
drz is mostly meme, not really good at anything but not terrible either.
dr650 is my personal choice for playing around that involves moderate trails and roads
>>
>>17273722
Thanks anon. Hearing that the klr is more street oriented is actually kinda good in my case. After thinking about it a bit more, I realize that its more likely I'll be riding something like 80% road 20% trail. At least until I get out of my box and learn how to adventure.
>>
>>17273690
keep in mind they only ever used the V5 in their MotoGP bike, and mechanical success at that level is partly determined by how much money you can throw at a problem (ahem Kawasaki) and it's not about wheel lock on deceleration, that was just an analogy I was using to describe the interplay between the pistons and the crank. Its about the overall mechanical traction at the wheel eliminating the stutter caused by the 180' crank that jerks the rubber back and froth essentially.

here's a fun video where you can hear a problem caused by the 180' degree crank
https://youtu.be/j0i_jqCddW8

these guys were swapping a hayabusa motor into a miata, and in the process removed the sprung hub that connects the balance shaft in the motor since they didn't think they needed most of the gearbox parts from the engine. They didn't know though that because of this stutter the sprung hub actually kept the countershaft engaged and damped the stutter some, but after deleting it there is a crazy clatter from the gear lash as the motor hits about half way to its redline

it's hard to say, talent at that level is arguably more valuable than technology, it was easy enough to see when Rossi bounced around between Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, and brought his talent with him, and while tech can be good enough to fill a gap or create one it's up to the rider to put it to use.
