So I have a cheap helmet (HJC CL-17) that's godawful with road/wind noise and the OEM chin skirt does fuck all to help

I was thinking I could sew on a sleeve to the bottom of the helmet that would go down my neck and into my shirt to help reduce wind noise
would this have any appreciable effect?
Do any of you guys have experience with something like this?

Anybody know what's the deal with this shit? I've never even seen this sign until today.

The other day, a couple friends and I went out for a ride. Toward the end of the trip on our way home, we got stuck behind some old dude in a pickup truck, going 10 under at the least. The road has a 45mph limit. We definitely obey the speed limit whenever we travel the road because of the fact that cops like to sit around the area as well as an EMS station that lets out onto the road. It's just a single lane road with a double yellow line. Anyways, long story short, we decided to pass the guy when we saw it was clear and he didn't seem too happy about it. I just noticed the same sign as pic related at the side of the road today, wasn't there yesterday and I'm just wondering if we're the ones that caused this. I mean, if the guy beeped at us and whatever, I'd imagine he probably went home and called the cops.

You can't. The two guys that administer it are completely useless, but any time someone tries to set up a new map they get autistically shouted down by either the original map creators throwing a fit even though they refuse to maintain it or by other /dbt/ posters mad for no reason.

I've emailed both the contacts to get added to the map, and more than two weeks later my marker isn't up.

Might as well give up until we get a new map that actually works and people accept it.

how much does a ninja 250 cost in running costs (gas, insurance, maintenance), If I have it insured.. say 6 months a year?

Thinkin of gettin one, but not sure if I can afford it. I dont wanna run out of money and go "lol I guess I just wont do my chain/plugs/forks/etc" and ruin the thing
>>

Seattle, Anchorage is just too remote from the rest of the mainland US. At least from Seattle you're hours away from different climates. In Anchorage, you're days away from a change in climate.
>>
>>17266874

Depends where you live, how you ride, how often you ride, how well you maintain your bike, and how much of the work you do yourself.

Insurance can be $90/year or $2000/year. Everything else is all over the place.

FZ Anon here.

I had never ridden a cruiser before and I've always been curious about how they feel to ride. I've always been turned off by cruisers since they're outdated, expensive, and have shit performance for their size. However, before today I had never actually ridden one so whenever I talked shit about them I felt a bit guilty for not actually trying it firsthand.

Well today I went on a test ride with a used 2006 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom just so I could experience it. The result kinda shocked me. When I dismounted the bike back at the dealership I realized I actually really enjoyed the ride. Sure the controls weren't comfortable for me because I wasn't used to them, there was quite a bit of frame vibration, and it cornered like a tank, but it was actually really enjoyable for riding on the highway (where most of the ride took place) and the sound with screaming eagle muffled exhaust was fucking tremendous.

I'm now considering getting a cruiser for a second bike to go along with my FZ-07. Am I crazy? I feel crazy for saying that.

That enjoyment you felt is just the novelty of having never ridden a cruiser. I went down the same path as you desu.

Had a CBR600 but wanted max comfy. Luckily a local Harley dealer had a demo day coming up so I tried out the Sportster 1200. Really like it so I sold my CBR and bought a Shadow 1100. Sold that in a month and got a CBR929rr.

The comfy and the sound get old when you hit a twisty road and want to have some fun. Also, there's no warp speed for easy over taking. Oh and braking took more planning since the shit is heavy and already has inferior to brakes to a sports bike.

Best dirt bike for $1500 or under?
My only experience in the dirt is on a ttr125 as a wee little boy. I want to get back into dirt but I'm a poorfag. Been eyeing XR250Rs and CRF230Fs mostly, anyone else have other recommendations?
>>

To add: I'd prefer a 4 stroke because I live near a lot of tight single track forest type stuff and don't want it to be limp dick until the powerband hits. Although there is a lot of high desert country not far from where I live

hey dbt, have you ever had something shipped using uShip? From a quick glance over, it looks like a shipping for the "sharing economy" (like uber for taxis or airbnb for rentals) - you post listings that say "i want x picked up here and delivered there for $xxx" and then someone decides to pick up your contract (sooner or later depending on how much you offer).

Anyone have an experience with this at all, good or bad? Looking for options to buy bikes that are futher away (would still go to inspect before ofc). Chevy Sparks don't have hitches so uHaul trailer is out.

Shame, your best bet would be something like a kdx200, anything else in that price range is probably fucked.
also most 2 stroke enduros can be lugged around in lower gears, not like they are 125cc mx bikes without a power valve.

2strokes arent that bad if you throw a flywheel weight on, and it helps teach tou throttle control anyways. Ide get a 250 older 2stroke mx bike or a 200 trail bike (kdx,wr)and take it easy on it till you get used to it. 125s are pretty peaky, but hearing 125s make my dick hard, one of my favourite sounding bikes fore sure

I only know the very basics of how and whiy internal combustion engines work, and all I know about the difference between 2-strokes and 4-strokes is that 2-strokes are so small it looks like part of the engine is missing and are also loud as fuck (I think).

Can you explain, using short words, why using a funny shaped exhaust pipe widens your powerband compared to using a straight exhaust pipe?
>>

Sonic wave supercharging.gif

>>17268461
it changes the RPM where the engine is supercharged making the power band in the lower RPM giving more bottom end and mid range but less top end.
>>
>>17268461
A 2 stroke engine has the gnarly looking exhaust pipe (called expansion chamber) shaped a certain way to give the engine a certain power curve, it's all about back pressure. The diagram >>17268477 posted is pretty good.
>>
>>17268461
Two strokes have the intake and exhaust open at the same time, allowing some unburnt air and fuel to pass straight through into the exhaust, the funny shaped exhaust directs sound waves in such a way that they push the unburnt fuel back into the combustion chamber. Changing the shape of the exhaust can change how it does this and at which RPMs, effecting the powerband, FMF gnarly in particular boosts low and mid range.

thanks anons, that's pretty cool
>how do the sound waves push the air/gas mix back into the chamber but still vent the exhaust, instead of doing, say, the opposite?
>>
>>17268517
Because of the shape of the expansion chamber, it is a large opening then a big air chamber followed by a very small exit as shown in >>17268477
sound waves bounce the gasses off the sides of the chamber pushing unburnt gasses back into the explodey bits all like "bro you aint done being blown up yet"

>>
>>17268538
yeah looking at the gif more closely it looks like the key is that the exaust (naturally) enters the pipe first and the mixture enters it later (because of the offset between the two valves and also because the mixture has to travel all the way across the chamber but the exhaust doesn't)
so the backpressure is timed so that it starts applying after the exhaust is pretty much out but before much of the mixture has gotten out.

What do you guys know about powder coating?

Ive decided to strip the paint off my magna frame to get rid of the little patches of rust in a few places but idk whay kind of coating or paint to use.

Are there any aesthetic mods i can do to this to make it look less gay?
>>
>>17268629
Longevity, it's nearly impossible to scratch, it doesn't fade, and it protects against rust much better than paint. My dad has a bike with a powder coated frame and 20 years and 40,000 miles later it still looks brand new. Powder coating is cool as fuck, aside from a few abrasives specifically meant for it or deforming the metal underneath it's almost impossible to damage it.

>>17268757

>>
>>17268668
>it's almost impossible to damage it.
Not really. There's different grades of powder coating, and commercial aesthetic ones aren't that crazy. Better than any paint still, but if you do say a dirt bike frame, it's going to get scratched by rocks and shit.

Also, it's way heavier than paint, you could add a dozen pounds to your bike if you start coating everything.
>>
>>17268757
During the break in period it matters for seating the rings.
Maybe if you're riding balls out on a bike that gets really hot it would make a difference to let off and cool the cylinder with overrun every once and a while but basically no, never.

I'm not quite 5'10" in my work boots and have a 32" inseam.
With the stock seat I can flat foot it.
With my Seat Concepts which is slightly wider, I can't unless I really squeeze the bike.
If you're spending $14,000 OTD on a dirt bike you can drop the extra grand to get it lowered by a suspension shop if it's a problem for you, but I think it'd be manageable. You could also get a Kouba link, but you can't get a lower seat or even shave it, it's only about an inch or two thick stock.
The kick stand would be annoying though, it's very long and swings out far, I'm going to cut an inch off mine.
With my Enduro wheels on I basically can only touch and one side and have to kick through the footpeg to put the stand up.

The bike is wonderful stock, totally nutty with intake/exhaust/tune. Can't imagine getting rid of it for anything else available today. I might change my mind when KTM comes out with the 790 platform next year if it's 100hp and 400lbs.

You say that like 51k is a lot.

Noice, I got mine with 91k now it`s 98k. Great bike, very different to my KLR. Only thing that bothers me is it gets far less kms per litre.

My KLR has 115k, but the odometre stopped working at 84k. I only know what I rode because I autisticaly tracked myself with GPS everyday.
>>
>>17269960
Kek that's sweet, has your bike been showing any problems? Mine has been fine except for the usual BMW electrical problem
>>
>>17269948
I have 55555 km coming up, hope I don't miss it.
>>
>>17269990
Oh yeah, it`s completely fucked in everyday. Zero maintenance of any real kind ever done. I have never completely changed the oil ever on it. Valves have never been looked at, engine never taken down. The electrics are all fine, expect the back indicators which sometimes get lose. Mechanically I guess it is ok, the engine seems fine enough. It is low on power, probably due to the clearances among other things. It was a shit bike to start with, but I have never taken care of it. Shows how strong it is to just keep on going under such conditions.

I got it as a secound bike to replace my good one after I was hit by a car. My first KLR 650 had 87k when I was hit, it was basically brand new. I am still sad about losing that one, maybe thats why I treat this KLR so badly. I took care of the first one properly.

Kawasaki Eliminator 125 good for an around town bike?
I know it's slow because lollawnmowerengine, but My CB1100 is too heavy for downtown errands/sidewalk parking and is not great on gas. Gonna try to talk him down to like 1600-1700.
Also it'd be good for my GF to learn on since she's literally 5 feet tall lol

Any experience with these?

>tfw you've been riding for ten years and you smoke almost anyone on local touge with your V-strom.

Just to rain on your parade a bit, a lot of people don't speed on the road because they're worried about getting booked. You're not necessarily faster, just less scared of getting a ticket.

I've seen guys that were slow on the street pump out very decent laps on a track. It's hard to tell who is fast without taking police out of the equation.
>>
>>17270334
Also you can't discount the guys who just don't want to push it and crash because jose spilled some lawn clippings right after you did your sighting run

No man, that's not how it works. If you start on a slow bike and get the confidence to go full throttle, it makes you a better rider. I know because after three years of learning to corner on a ninja 250 i got on a ZX12 and went WOT everywhere out of habit and fucking smoked everyone.

People get literally autistic over parking

Like the kind of autist who doesn't know why, just that it has to be done that way, no argument, they're right. You know, hand him a sandwich cut horizontally and he can't explain why it's supposed to be diagonal but fuck you anyways, you're taking him out of his comfort zone.

Hopefully it's not too hard to find one that's just a headlight with a small bikini fairing and windshield on it that can be clamped to the forks. I was hoping to dig something out of a junkyard and attach it to the front of one of these to cover the instrument cluster and wiring clusterfuck. The stock headlight mounts to the fairing which looks out of place without side cowls, but the instrument cluster looks fine without the trim meant to blend it in with the front fairing.

I dunno CC, I have no problems riding my XR650L off road, which is well known for being obnoxiously tall. I only have a 30" inseam and I have to choose between tip-toeing and putting one foot flat with the other on the peg.

Maybe on a turbo-pigfat ADV bike or something it would be a bigger disadvantage.
>>

You're asking about a 125cc during murrican hours, most of us start on at least 500s, if not bigger.

None of us know shit about scooters, but it seems like for that segment no matter what its going to be slow so just get whatever fits you.

Anyway, it'll probably be fun. I've never ridden a two stroke that was smaller than 200cc, but it was old and gutless so that will probably be comparable. You'll be able to pin the throttle pretty much any time you want without shitting your pants.

Ignorant about small bikes maybe

Nanny states use their citizens to pay for their other citizens, so anyone who is likely to die or come to harm is a loss for others if they eat it and a burden for others if they sruvive. The US isn't a nanny state so we're not so adamant about taking away freedom for safety.

>europe: you must start on a 125! you might be a good rider, you might not, we don't know, so everyone must start on a 125 so fewer idiots die! idiots pay taxes too! you pay taxes for idiot's hospital bills!
>buy a turbobusa idgaf you have private insurance, just wear a helmet to reduce the likelihood of the state having to pay to scrape your corpse off the road due to a minor accident

inb4 "lol american healthcare". the problem with healthcare is the actual cost, not how we pay for it, and that can be traced all the way back to the growing cost of tertiary education that doctors are trying to pay off for the first decades of their career.

Are there any good way of taking doggos on the bike?? I have an fz-07 and I would love to take the bike up to see the gf on weekends (about an hour and a half away) but I'm stuck with the car to take my buddy with me. He's a 35 lb dachshind mix. I was thinking of getting one of those chest toddler carriers to strap him on to me and get some eye/ear pro so he doesn't hate it. Any other easier ways?? Or should I just not do it because I'd be devastated if I ever crashed with him on board..

You know the same blatant corporatism is just as rampant in the EU, right?

The only difference is how the expense is distributed among the population.
>>

At least find a jacket with some vents. I ride a dual sport around a coastal town, it's really fucking tempting to just wear regular summer clothes when I ride but I don't trust the out of state drivers enough to not kill me.
I get more comfort out of knowing I won't turn into pulled pork if I crash than feeling a cool breeze.
>>
>>17270667
I can take all 18 airbags and the backup camera out. And also the cat, because my county doesn't enforce emissions.

>THICK
It's not that they take too long, it's that they spend too much money. That piles on top of fallacious entitlement (i worked hard! i deserve more money!), so they have to earn more than they already wanted to do cover their debts for a few years. And then you throw insurance in, effectively increasing what you can sanely charge for a service or medicine without losing customers, because your customers are constantly mindlessly paying into their premium and the insurance company can now cover a $1200 stitch that would have been $200 in a patient-paying world and even less if tuition and therefore student debt were not sky high.

Economies are complex interactions and it's sad when people try to solve them by just redistributing money instead of considering how culture and current business relations affect it
