Please ensure these threads are up until at least summer 2018. I'm currently dumping my money into crypto and savings so I won't have time to take the course and purchase a bike/gear while it's still warm out this year. I will use these threads to look forward to the semi-near future.

I'm nearing my $4 grand budget and I'm having trouble deciding between:
SV650 - ~$3-4k
DR650 - ~$4k ( or new - $6700)
DRZ400 - $?? havent seen many postings
KLR650 - ~$3-4k
It's been 2 years since I last rode and it was only dirtbikes on back roads. I like having off road capabilities but haven't found many trails so It may not be worth it to go enduro. biggest thing is I plan on doing long distances. Streetbikes aren't very enticing because my life revolves around a clean driving record (CDL, etc) I'm leaning toward a DR650 because it seems like the best in-between, my dad said just keep a set of enduro tires for the SV650 and call it good Any thoughts?
>>17249171
Get the DR
>>17249171
Honestly anon, you listed 4 bikes and three of them are dual sports.
Get the DR650 and don't look back, you'll enjoy it. DRZ400 is fun if you want a supermoto, but I've got a special fondness for 650 thumpers.

Also you think it's worth it to go new? It's like 2k more and I can build some credit, I want to eventually save up for an AfricaTwin though (
~14k) so it might be worth it to put the extra 2k toward that
>>17249171
>>17249246
If you're already looking at the DR650 and KLR650, you might also look at the XR650L. The KLR is the most road oriented of the three, but if you're used to dirtbikes the XR will feel the most familiar.
In stock form, it's got a little less oomph across the entire RPM range than the DR. It's also really tall, which is a pro some places but a con for riders with an inseam shorter than say 30". More suspension travel, shorter wheel base, wider gear ratio. Similar aftermarket. You can find them everywhere for cheap because they haven't changed in something like 20 years.
Both bikes are easy to squeeze a little extra power out of.
Whatever you buy, I don't think it's worth buying a DR650 or XR650L new. The used market has a ton of them and that $2k is better spent on gear, upgrades, or saving for a new bike. I got my 2005 XR with 1400 miles on it in 2012 for either $4200 or $4800.

Dual sports are for wheelies and illegally riding up on footpaths. They're uncomfortable, vibrating pieces of shit with short fuel ranges so that's what road riders use them for.

you don't need sticky road tires to do wheelies and violate the idea of dedicated travel areas. sumos are for supermoto racing, nothing about them makes them better for hooning except for the fat front brake that improves your ability to do a stoppie, and most sumo kids are too shit to do a stoppie anyways.

Nu-Adv bike aka starbucks racer = Road bike modified for light offroading, may have callbacks to rally racing. Two+ cyllinders, standard motorcycle HP for the displacement, heavy with normal streetbike amenities, powerful brakes, dirtbike-like suspension travel and wheel choices
Adv bike = True 50/50 compromise like a KLR650
"Dual sport" = Used to mean 50/50 bike, now means an MX racer-like chassis with a more detuned single cyllinder engine that doesn't need a rebuild every two races even though it's a four stroke

Carbs could be out of sync. Cleaned them a couple months ago and just kinda bench synced them but never with a sync tool. It doesn't make sense the problem would just start now though... I thought unsynced carbs just made idle inconsistent, not BALLS TO THE WALL

>There aren't defined lines between the segments of motorcycles.
>>17249664
>So how are you defining dual sport?
did you read what he just said?
>>17249728
I KNOW the carbs are completely fucked out of sync on the CB. When I got the bike it idled like shit, stumbled and missed, and bogged / died if you gave it too much throttle too quick all the way up to ~3500 RPM. After that it ran fine.
After the carb cleaning (assuming I didn't fuck anything up in the process), the bike started and idled a little better, but would die immediately with ANY throttle at all.
Fiddling with the sync screws produced results from 6000rpm on start to wouldn't run. Best I managed was a 2000rpm idle with it running ok. Now I'm waiting on a Carbtune II that I ordered two weeks ago to get here.
>>17249721
KLR650 is shit, it's also a dual sport.
>>17249694
>nothing about them makes them better for hooning
Except the massive amount of on road grip afforded by the sportbike tires on 17" rims. The very point behind a supermoto.
Hooning on knobbies is sketchy as fuck unless you ride like shit.
/dbt/ pls help
Trying to put a bike back together, but I can't figure out what this (circled in red) is supposed to connect to. The parts diagram helpfully refers to the tube as "tube", and the connection as "3 way jointset", neither of which tell me anything about what it's for.
There's a vacuum port on the front of the #2 carb for the fuel shutoff, fuel line connects to the item marked 4 in the diagram, and the overflow lines all connect on the bottom. I have no idea what's supposed to go here.
Ideas?
>>17249752

>>17249777
Uhh it's a fuel tube. It delivers gas to all the carbs.
>>17249771
>knobbies
dual sport tires are fine for everything that's not hard cornering
>>17249784
because it's still a precision system like FI, but instead of plugging in the numbers you have to adjust several screws, once for each carb.
>>17249793
The connection marked as "4" in the diagram is where the fuel line connects, and what delivers fuel to all the carbs. It's also a different size.
Are you telling me I'm supposed to install a splitter and connect different size fuel line to each place? Seems wrong anon.
>>17249700
>not having a Schuberth with an internal sun visor
Guys, on the recommendation of an anon here I just sent my bikes ECU to Bauce Racing for a derestrict and retune.
Should be about a week and a half turn around time. I'm pretty excited as it's supposed to really wake the bike up in the midrange and allow more than 50-70 percent throttle.
It's also unlocking all the GYTR race ECU features like the quickshifter, lower engine braking, higher idle, lower fan temps, fuel and ignition map tuning, opened up throttle map, disabling all the emissions shit, increased redline, optimized velocity stack, etc.
Cost me $185 plus shipping the ECU there. Pretty excited and thanks to the anon who recommended it.
>>17249784
Considering they're purely mechanical, it's impressive they even work as well as they do.
>>17249801
>dual sport tires are fine for everything that's not hard cornering
>hard cornering
That's half the fun of hooning a bike like a supermoto around.
>>17249784
>Ugghhh why are carbs so gay?
>>17249801
>because it's still a precision system like FI, but instead of plugging in the numbers you have to adjust several screws, once for each carb.
yfw muticylinder fuel injected bikes need their throttle bodies balanced in pretty much exactly the same way a multi-carb setup needs to be balanced.
>>17249820
except the VAST majority of supermoto riders never come close to cornering hard enough to break free even the hardest, cheapest dual sport tires.
>>17249835
cool unfounded opinion bro.
In my experience that's complete bullshit. Supermoto riders typically ride harder than any of the other dudes in the canyon from what I've seen.
>>17249835
You must know some pretty shit supermoto riders.
>>17249824
But you won't accidentally fuck up the tuning by taking the injectors, rails, and throttle bodies out to be cleaned of carbon and fuel gunk. You'll just restore the system to its original state.
To properly clean a carb you must start from 0 with everything that's not jet selection.
>>17249848
I do
>>17249843
congrats
>>17249815
yeah I heard thats really good on the r6
>>17249815
You're going to love it bro. Really makes it come alive. Not a ton of gain at the top but the midrange gain is night and day.
>>17249852
By no means am I saying carbs are fun or better in any way. Just that throttle bodies must also be synced to work properly.
Because you hardly ever (read: never) have to disassembly the fuel injection system on a bike, syncing throttle bodies is something you might do once or twice for the life of the bike. And all it involves is hooking up a manometer and twisting some screws.
>>17249875
You never have to dissasemble a carburetor either if you follow best practices and actually have a fuel filter (surprise: some budget nip bikes don't.)
>>17249815
Thing is higher throttle openings at low RPM doesn't do a whole lot with those engines. I have a 600cc I4 with mechanical throttle bodies and in the low-mid range it makes literally zero difference between half and full throttle.
>>17249526
Significant safety gear is not really practical on a bicycle while unless you're going full ADV uncle most motorcycle gear improves performance given its minimal impact on power:weight ratio and positive effect on comfort and body positioning.
For what it's worth even in commuting in the city a 50cc scooter is like 60kph top speed unless it's downhill and 30kph max around any kind of corners while the bike I might see 75kph and the same corners can be 50, plus the possibility I might end up going somewhere faster without stopping at home. The former is also somewhat less likely to be crashed from operator error and isn't nearly as problematic to fall off of or under. (CE armour isn't exactly rated for collisions anyways) T-shirts and flip flops is still dumb but I'm not going to say they're exactly as dangerous regardless.
>>17249904
Yea, it still doesn't give you full throttle in the lower rpm where it wont matter anyway. Only past 6000 or so RPM are you actually able to give it the beans. Stock throttle maps these bikes dont really have any snap below 9,000rpm. Once derestricted they have a ton at 9,000rpm and starts pull hard from 6-7000rpm.
Difference isn't only from the throttle map either, the electronic throttle trumpets (YCCI) are retuned for midrange as well. And the bike's ignition and fuel maps are retuned for your mods.
>>17249895
This is so wrong.
Especially as carbs get older they're very likely to need some work other than just cleaning out dirty fuel. I've had lots of float needles/seats/orings/gaskets that failed. Also they have to be taken off/apart to be retuned any time you make a modification to the bike, unlike EFI where you simply plug it in and upload a map (if any change is needed at all).
>>17249928
>16000rpm
>>17249933
By the time that shit fails by use instead of neglect, your injectors are probably squirting instead of spraying
The only unavoidable disadvantages carbs have are efficiency and how much of a PTIA it is to tune and retune them

Still waiting on my service manual in the mail, hoping to get a little carb guidance...
'82 Honda CM250C - Threw a tach on it and found it was running a bit fast at idle. I backed it down to where it should be, and then realized that I was actually working the fast idle adjustment screw. Apparently the prev operator had screwed it in far enough to actually open up the throttle plate a tad when the fast idle wasn't even engaged. I have a basic plan of attack, and wanted to make sure it was reasonable...
Warm up the bike. Back the fast idle screw all the way out so that the throttle plate is fully closed. Adjust the idle air and mixture screws to get the correct idle speed (1200±100), shooting for as lean as possible. Shut her down and let it cool. Get it started on choke, and adjust the fast idle speed back to spec (2500±100).
Does this seem correct?

What are the basic differences likely to be between a boots branded as "sport touring / adventure" and boots branded as "sportbike / race"?
Things I've seen so far:
>The sport touring boots seem to usually be closer to a neutral angle and the race boots are going to be more aggressive to accommodate shifting/breaking from a more tucked position
>The touring boots seem to have simpler construction and less stitching; the sport boots are going to be more complex and have more hard plates/panels in rubber/metal etc.
>Sports boots are, by and large, more expensive.
I guess my main question is, is this a tradeoff situation where sport boots are strictly more protective / less comfortable and touring boots are strictly less protective / more comfortable?
I don't plan to offroad at all; would I be paying for any features on adventure/touring boots that would just be wasted on me entirely?
>>17250582

>sport boots are strictly more protective / less comfortable and touring boots are strictly less protective / more comfortable
Basically this, yea. You'd be surprised though, some of the more racey boots can be pretty comfy. You gotta find a pair that fits just right.
>>17250591
Just get it fgt
>>17250613
maybe uncomfortable/comfortable was the wrong metric to choose there
i mean, the quality of being designed to be worn while and only while riding a motorcycle and being good at the things it needs to do there (provide engine feedback, allow easy braking, shifting, hitting pavement at high speeds, etc)
vs the quality of being design to be worn on a foot while the foot is doing foot things (including but not limited to riding motorcycles, walking, not slipping when you step in oil, getting rained on, wearing in the office, walking on tile floors without squeaking, etc.)
>>17250402
Looking for cheaper.
>>17250647
Eh, yea. A lot of the more regular boot styled touring boots are usually good for wearing around for more than just riding. The more sporty stuff can still do that, but you wouldn't want to wear them like regular boots or something.

I'm assuming they never made a fuel injected 750? My father has a carb 750 from 1999. It's ok. It's the beater around town and surprisingly fun to travel long distances on in its "own way" but it is anemic. It's just super easy to ride. Probably the easiest bike I've ever ridden. It is comfortable and forgiving but is slow (5 speed tops out at 95ish and that is fucking screaming) and is very boringly predictable. It just doesn't have ummph. I compare it to the tractor like parralel twins I've ridden, not really what I was expecting with a v-twin.

There are dual sports that easily keep up with traffic on the highway, your assertion is without merit.
The fact is if you want a low cc bike a dual sport is a far better and more practical option than a slow useless fake sportbike.
If you want something with fast acceleration and top speed. You're not cross shopping a bunch of slow ass 250cc/300cc shitbikes. Full stop.

For the price of a 250/300 you can easily get a used 600 and be acknowledged as a real rider. If you need to cite statistics and shit because you're buttblasted over getting left behind every group ride and having to ride full throttle in top gear to just keep up with traffic get a life and a real bike.
>>17251529
>tfw masculinity is based purely on genetics and not on how manly you are
>>17251502
You're missing the point that you dont look at bikes anywhere near that displacement if you care about 0-60 times at all. They are all similar flavors of slow.
Once you've accepted that a 500 or less cc bike is just going to be flat slow you start looking at their other merits if you still want to buy in that bracket.
a dual sport or a supermoto will simply be a more enjoyable and versitile bike than some fake wanna be sport bike. it will handle in traffic and around town better and it will only be slightly worse on the highway.
Plus all the added utility of being able to ride off road.

>It does still matter because it's an indicator of being able to pull out into traffic without getting assblasted.
Which any decent dualsport can do.
>Based on what?
lighter, taller, narrower, better visibility, better steering lock, great low speed steering geometry.
>I love the added utility of a road bike doing something I don't give a fuck about a road bike doing
You're missing the point... again.
If you want a bike that's exclusively good on the road, a 250-300cc fake sportbike is a shit choice. Just get a better road going bike, like a 650 twin. hell, even a 500cc learner.
The ONLY good bikes in the 250-400cc displacement range are supermotos and dual sports. Period.
250-300cc fake sportbikes are shit, period.
>>17251667
You don't typically take a bone stock dual sport for trans continental trips. They are decent commuters and good for connecting trails stock but not meant for long distance off the showroom floor.
If you do want to do a long distance trip pretty much every single dual sport out there has the option of a high capacity tank for just a few bills and would be just one of several modifications you would make to prep a bike for long distance travel.
Your point is moot.

This is the truth. There's no reason to get one of these shitbikes besides cost and you're deluding yourself by trying to be convinced otherwise.
They're just bikes made for third world countries and don't even have sportbike geometry.
Are i3's the worst sounding bikes?
Not as much scream as an i4 and not as throaty as a vtwin. Just some lame middle ground.
why would anyone get "sport" bike if its not even fast?
isnt the whole point of shit ergonomics to be fast?
>>17251816
I've put about 1000km on a ninja 300 and I thought the ergonomics were fine but if you have a low powered bike and you want to increase its speed, improving its aerodynamics with fairings and riding position makes a lot of sense to me.
>>17251840
Makes even more sense to just not get a slow bike if you don't want to go slow
>muh speed
you people realise there is more to do on bikes other than go fast in a straight line right? Cause there's a whole lot of "you can't have fun differently than me or you're dumb" ITT
>>17251680
How about the i4 250s?
>Needed a rare and unusual complete engine you need for my rare baiku.
>was $1,300 to buy and import it(125cc)
>tfw you see a guy selling one 1 hour away because he wrecked his bike with the same engine.
I just saved myself $1,000 and got a spare set of wheels and instruments lads
>>17251773
Thank you.
Everybody always calls me names when i mention how horrible I3s sound to me.
Its just a boring brbrbrbrbr on low revs and a nausiating frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on mid and high range.
And triumph actually uses the "unique" sound of their engines as a marketing tool.

My Z750 has twice the fuel of a Harley 48
Who wore it better?

Here's how a p-twin sounds.

welcome to /dbt/, enjoy your stay
I actually kind of wonder why /dbt/ and /o/ are like this whereas, say, /k/ and /diy/ (lots of overlap between car/bike guys, gun guys, and guys who like to build shit) are not. Leaded gasoline exposure? Some tripfag who poisoned the well early on?
Best countries to drive motorcycles in:
From worst the best
>Austrilia
>New zealand
lots of restrictions to drives, you need special motorcycles license to drive on the left shoulder, lane splitting is ilegal(I tihnk)
>USA
>Canada
lane splitting is legal on in one or two states
Can ride on right shoulder
>West Europe
You can lane split but riding on the right shoulder when there is traffic is not acceptable
>East Eurpe
>Israel
>Turkey
You can lane split and police turn a blind eye on riding in right shoulder.
>>17252180
Lane splitting is illegal here in ausland, lane filtering is however legal in the states that matter; I.e QLD, NSW and TAS. the othere states afaik are either still undecided or i can't be stuffed searching the info.
The licence grades are pretty similar to Europe though; dunno what's dragging ausland down that badly. Heck, our class R licence never expires unlike the English A whatever
>>17252193
>lane filtering
Lane filtering is when you goin to the front on a trafic light? or just passing cars in small spaces
>>17252215
yeah, slipping through the traffic at the lights. you can also use the side of the/breakdown lane of the highway if the traffic is moving below 30kph in qld to 'split' too.
>>17252227
here's a link for my states laws on the matter,

>tfw I might have to cycle to my cbt in full motorbike gear
I'll be the safest mother chuffer on the road
What's /dbt/ thoughts on Cleveland CycleWerks
>>17252291
just another chink bike
>>17252291
Reportedly riddled with low (terrible) build quality and/or notably unreliable and prone to failures.
They'd been around for a little while now and they still haven't sorted out simple stuff like the speedo failing withing 5000miles on their heist.
Cheap Chinese crap sadly.
I had a dream last night where I was motorbiking through a shopping center, I was lost and trying to find a place called the "reality zone". I never found it and ended up being killed in a car wash, which is when I woke up.
Is it a bad idea to buy a 2nd hand helmet?
I want this Shoei Qwest helmet that is 2nd hand for £120, normally it is between £300-400.
https://www.gumtree.com/p/clothes-helmets-boots/Shoei-qwest-helmet-/1235837735
>>17252425
Very bad, internal damage can be hard to spot, and they only last so long anyway, second hand helmets are a false economy.
>>17252425
guy says on the advert its brand new, not worn, and certainly looks it so I will take the risk.
>>17252180
>burgerland
>can ride on right shoulder
This is news to me
>>17252464
Same here. MN shoulders are authorized buses and emergency vehicles only. And the shoulders are usually so dirty I wouldn't want to anyways.
>>17252082
If we bought bikes based on sound we'd all be riding honda V4s.
>>17252432
Yej, it's only your life, so clealy not worth full price.
>RIP Nicky
>>17252529
>spending money unnecessarily
>>17252193
splitting/filtering are used interchangeably here in the US. When we talk about the legality of it we're generally talking about any act of moving between lanes of cars, usually at low speed
>>17252272
>ATGATT for cbt
when i did my cbt they provided all the gear required, which for a 125 is only helmet gloves and a jacket
