I guess I never understood this either. Riding even the most lightweight, underpowered 125cc scooter scares me more than a litre supersports with a sticky throttle (poorly maintained Ninja, shit was horrifying when I had to wrench the throttle shut with my entire arm at 140mph). It's the lack of a tank to wrap my thighs around.

I could understand that if it were priced accordingly but it's only a grand less than a VFR800 in my market and getting dangerously close to the Africa Twin.

What puts me off is that it looks poorly modded. Plus replacement engine in unknown condition AND needing work. God knows what the fuck you can stumble upon there. Retarded jetting, poorly done wiring, stripped to fuck everything rust in the tank etc are all possible.

You could still get an aesthetic bike for a similar price with less red flags.

If you're feeling courageous let us know how it goes.

1. Learn how to set up a tarp (it's fuckin easy especially if you're not in the desert)

2. Buy this one: https://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Quest-Defender-Tarp-Square/dp/B01FKN766M/

3. Buy some small plastic stakes, or make them when you get there.

4. Roll up tarp, ground pad and wool blanket into one compact package. Lash to bike. If you need more padding bring a trash bag to stuff leaves in and put your pad on top of it.

5. If it's cold you can position the tarp to catch heat from the fire and get extra comfy.

You could also bring a small hammock instead, which is even more compact. Just string the tarp over it for rain.

CM250 here continuing dumb questions from the other night...

As long as I set it down gently, it should be reasonable OK to put the bike on its side for a while, right? Baiku is a very dirty girl, want to be able to get down under with the pressure washer.

She also appears to be tinkling a little gas when sitting. I forgot to switch off the petcock last night, but I assume that still isn't normal. Have a carb rebuild kit with new seats on order, but its two weeks out, coming from Taiwan.

I've been trying to find specs on the alternator, and all I could find was something referencing the charging amperage as being 6A at 5k RPM... Does that seem right? If so, I'm gonna have to rethink the new headlamp I ordered.

For what I read TKC80s dont last as long and are more offroad oriented.
Im looking for a 50/50 on/off that last a lot for touring.
>>
>>17231594
Spraying mud is fun!

>>17231597
>How? What happened?
Emergency braking on the highway, didn't have feel for the tires yet and completely locked up the front for 50m.
Fell at the last moment and love tapped the bumper of a qt grill.

Should have just went between the cars, but I was just stupid.

Just gotta budget and save.
>>
>>17231630
She did flip her hair, but didn't giggle. She was more concerned about me.

She asked me for my number, some how thought it was a good idea not to ask her number, even if she asked if she should give it.

>>17231632
Gooiergracht, which is like 2km in total, straight. That's it.
>>
>>17231597

They are a pretty soft compound, and they're fantastic off road. Highway lifespan will probably not be more than 6000-8000 miles, which is reasonable for a tire that performs the way this one does on both. I would call it a true 50/50.

There's no such thing as "a 50/50 for touring". What's good for off road will just shorten the longevity of the tire. The K60 might be the ticket for you, but it's more of a 60/40.

follow her for a few weeks and learn her patterns, take photos for reference and dedicate a wall to mapping it all out.
start bumping into her when she's out and about so she gets to know you.
Then steal her cat/dog keep it for a couple days and give it back with a story about how it came up to you in the street.
now she will fall in love with you out of gratitude and because the cat "likes" you (sounds dumb but all girls think their cats are a "great test of character")

Dumb(est?) Q of the day...
Motorcycle gear selectors are sequential, right? So if I am in first and pull up, it is only going to second, I can't accidently upshift past second unless I release the pressure and lift up again. And vice-versa for downshifting?

>minimum insurance covers next to nothing
LAND OF THE FREE

The minimum here is $1.26m for material damages and $8.41m for injuries, and still our insurances aren't noticably more expensive than those in the US. Ya'll burgers gettin' shafted by the Jews again and think it's freedom.
>>
Two n00b questions...

Checked the slack on my chain and it was a bit over spec (not to replace point yet). I left the bike idling and just turned off the petcock while I got my tools, loosened up the rear axle, adjusted the tension, tightened it back up, and adjusted the shock preload for my fat ass. It wasn't until about here that the engine died. Tried starting it back up and it failed, so it was actually out of fuel, not just a random stall. This seems like a really long time to run with the petcock closed, but I don't do motorcycles. Does this seem like an issue, or can they really run for 10+ on the fuel in the bowl?

Another thing noticed while working on this... I had the bike on the center stand and kicked it into 1st with the wheel up. The wheel had power on it, even with the clutch pulled in. I do not feel any pull when I'm on the bike with the clutch pulled in. Does this sound like adjustment is needed, or is it normal?

>>
>>17232832
With. Half faired bikes look incomplete unless they're vintage racers.
>>
>>17232830
Wheel spinning is normal since the clutch plates are always touching a little bit. Not sure about the fuel thing, i am able to ride mine for like under 2 minutes before it runs out of gas with the petcock closed
>>
>>17232832

With them.

Looks like fuel dripping on it from something caused the shitty paint to peel come off.
>>
>>17232840
>implying it isn't laughably easy to drive without insurance in the US
If I cancelled my insurance here the registration office would automatically be notified and the police would knock on my door to take my plates from me after a four weeks deadline for turning them in.
>>
>>17232850
>fuel dripping on it
Fugg, I can smell gas when I get close to my bike too. Am I going to blow up?
>>
>>17232830
The wheel spin is due to a phenomenon known as viscous coupling. Basically, even though the clutch plates are separated, the oil moves with the engine's plate, making the transmission plate spin a little. It'll disappear as the bike warms up or if you out any resistance on the wheel so the oil can't push it around, and it's not dangerous in any way.
>>
>>17232830

Both normal.

Wheel spinning a little is pretty normal, just the fluid in the clutch.

I can get a mile or two down the road if I forget to turn my fuel on before the bike starts to sputter, so yeah they can run a while on the float bowl.

>>17232858

Nah, you're fine. Wouldn't be a bad idea to see where it's coming from though. Might need to repair / replace your petcock or something.
>>
>>17232830
I find I can ride for around half a mile after turning the petcock off on my bike. So with the throttle closed, yeah, bikes will idle a while even on that little amount of fuel. If you know how carburetors work, you can understand why. It's basically spraying a fine mist of fuel/air so a little goes a long way in a small engine.

Thankies! Two more things I can knock of the 'oh shit why did I buy a 35 year old used bike as first bike' list. Have tires on the way from California, headlamp upgrade from Massachusetts, carb rebuild kit from Taiwan and a complete gasket set (don't need it right now) from Italy.

Probably, but I have a few things going on. Probable float bowl leak (tinkled a bit of gas after I parked it last night). It also has issues at the very load end of the throttle, like 1-3 curly hairs above idle. Stalls out, but fine above that. Guessing a dirty slow jet? It also smells really, really rich at idle (but I'm more used to FI truck engines).

You could always try to buy the individual o-rings and gaskets for your carb since the jets and other metal pieces are most likely perfectly fine. All I had to do for my carb was clean the jets and replace rubber so I bough some Viton o-rings (couple dollars total) and a float bowl gasket which was like $4.
>>17232912
>Probable float bowl leak
Maybe the float bowl gasket?
I'm not a carb wizard but I think the smell is just the nature of carbed bikes. My bike gets above average mpg, starts better with the fuel enrichment circuit (instead of choke), the plug is fairly new with light brown/grey tint, but my exhaust still has that sweet, old car exhaust smell when I'm idling to warm it up.
>>
>>17233024
Of course not! I always wear a condom when I ride.
It's either oil or coolant I think.
>>

>>
>>17232912
Something you might find helpful from a fellow oldusedbike anon, that tinkling may be from the overflow hose.
just letting you know because carbs are a bitch to deal with and i avoid them unless certain it's an issue

plus, I think if it were a float bowl leak it'd be relatively constant rather than just when parked, so maybe try noticing if it leaks when running normally? (make sure it's leaking from the carb itself rather than the hose, as I said)

Haven't dug too far into it, what I lazily called leaking bowl could be bowl gasket, bad seat or floats, etc. I'm not noticing anything when its been running, but it hasn't been running much. Only noticed anything because of a minor puddle when I went back out to it this morning.

Some good news, I went up and got a new timing light with a tach function. She was idling a bit fast at 1650. Took her back down to 1300 per spec, and found that the stall at very low throttle was gone. I don't see the idle speed adjustment doing anything there, so I'm thinking she is just a bit cold blooded, and I hadn't warmed her up enough when playing around before.

hoping to get my first bike soon, thinking of getting either a "new" (used 2015+) Ninja 300 or a Vulcan. any input y'all can give for a newfag? My shitbox is slowly dying so I'll probably be riding it a lot. I also have a few questions.

First, how difficult will it be for me to do maintenance on one of these on my own? I don't have much experience with fixing shit, and only started recently with my car because my goto mechanic retired.

How bad is it to keep bikes outside (theft risks aside)? I don't have a garage.

Suggestions on full face helmets?

if you're on a budget the hjc cl-17 is about the best you can do for the price for a helmet

the #1 thing to remember is if someone really wants to steal your motorcycle they're going to steal it. Buy a bike cover and chain that fucker up with a kryptonite chain, your average ACE chain can be cut by bolt cutters and won't do diddly fuck.

>if you're on a budget the hjc cl-17 is about the best you can do for the price for a helmet
A helmet is like the one thing I'm ok with splurging on to a potentially extreme amount. I'd rather overspend on that and keep my melon whole than buy something cheap and deal with cheap performance/want something else later on.

I live in a small [white] town so theft isn't a huge worry of mine. I'm more worried about how Texan weather will fuck me over.

More expensive helmets are quieter or more comfortable, but not really significantly safer.

Could be floats like you mentioned and then overflowing. It could either be stuck or the tip is worn/not seating correctly. One thing you don't want to have happen is leave your petcock on while parked, and then have fuel fill up inside the cylinder and contaminate your oil because your float wasn't working.
I've had that happen but with a vacuum actuated petcock so it was a complete surprise. I traced fuel dripping from my swingarm up into the airbox.
Had to change the oil (more came out than I put in) before running it again.
>>
>>17233239
Why start out with a 300? Everyone I ever heard that started that low traded or sold their bike within like two months because of how boring it was. Save yourself the hassle and just get a 500 at least. My first bike is a 600 and I don´t see myself needing another bike anytime soon.
>>
>question

why are "about 600" and "about 1000" the standard displacements for racing (allowing for e.g. the cheater bump for twins, etc.)? I mean, why 600 and not 500, or 1000 and not 1100?
>>
>>17233566
Because every manufactor has comparable 600 and 1000 bikes, and its what most people go to. Theres a ton more 600/1000 bikes than there are sv650s. Its more or less a basic standard to measure.
>>
>>17233576
>Because every manufactor has comparable 600 and 1000 bikes
Well, yeah, but they build those for homologation purposes and because people like to buy race replicas because the racing series all have 600 and 1000 classes, right? So that just pushes the question back a step.
>>
>>17233582

My brother bought a TW200. He's complaining that the headlight output drops to nothing when he's off the throttle, as it's run directly off the alternator.

I told him I think the easiest way to deal with it is:

headlight wire (AC) > rectifier > diode > capacitor > headlight

Is there a way to 'even out' the headlight without converting the signal to DC? Also will this bork high/low beam switch?
