The fewer cyllinders and valves you have the easier it is. Make sure you double check and write stuff down.

If it's adjusted with shims like on a GS500 you'll have to put your valve cover back together and do it all over again after your new shims come in the mail unless you live near a dealer that will exchange shims for you. Don't leave engines in any state of dissasembly for a prolonged period of time.

They're not as bad as people make them out to be. They can be troublesome when theyre first being worn in, so that's why if you buy one I would recommend getting one with at least 10,000 km on it. I would also recommend getting at least a 2007 and newer because an 07 has newer updated gears that apparently are much better than the old ones. Mine is an 06. Basically you just need to really be on top of regular preventative maintenance stuff, and you will likely have to do it on your own since there are not many places out there that know how to work on them.

How else can you ride with two of your best friends on one bike?

no it wouldn't.

chickenstrips don't matter but I find this argument even more bizarre, tyres don't become unused, if you never touch the sides again after a track day they will be coated in a shredded rubber.

How do you people even come up with this shit, what is it based on? not reality surely.

Because it literally makes you a poser.

You bought something for the status of owning it.

Not because you're going to use it.
>>
>>17188680
I use mine to its potential most of the time
Sometimes I just wanna ride around.
I still take it to the track like you say it's made for it, but there's nothing wrong with running around on it either.

>>17188598

How do you like that Shadow?

I was trying to talk the wife into buying one but she bought the CB750 instead.

The Nighthawk and TW are the wifes bikes. The bulk of the Gold Wing makes her nervous, and she hasn't taken me up on the offer of trying the XR yet. Which is reasonable, considering she can't even put both toes on the ground.

>>
>>17188704
There's nothing wrong with either

Only knee-chewer (or chuunee) teenagers care about who's a "poser" and who's "authentic", because they think possessions define your personality. They say posers try to do that, but really, by trying to be more "authentic" in your possessions you're actually trying to define your personality with them, while in being a "poser" and owning things that don't advertise your actual personality, you are not. In fact, you probably don't give a fuck and just bought it because you liked it.

I can't really give a very well-rounded opinion because I haven't been riding long and haven't had the chance to ride much else, but for a cruiser I really enjoy it. Just the right amount of get-up-and-go, not long enough to be a pain in curves, overall very manageable. It's also got a lot going for it that keeps it very low-maintenance; shaft drive, hydraulic lifters, etc. Mine is above the 30,000 mile mark yet still runs flawlessly, though I will definitely attribute much of that to the care given by the previous owner as well. Doesn't really have anything crazy going for it, but it seems to me like a solid, no-frills bike.

I definitely like the more basic looks in comparison to most of what's on the market today at least; it seems like a lot of the stuff out there now really tries to play into the cruiser psyche with their design languages and it mostly just isn't my thing anymore.

So when DO you use high beams? Is this a country boy thing? I have literally never thought "damn, it's just super dark tonight, I better turn on the high beams", nor have I ever felt far enough away from other humans to feel justified in turning them on and not being paranoid about suddenly encountering oncoming traffic and having to decide between leaving them on and feeling like a dick and flipping them off while passing and feel like I'm making a human connection (see: figuring out where to look while passing someone on a sidewalk, saying gg in a 1v1 in dota or overwatch, etc)

The older ones fry R/Rs. The tourmax replacement is good prevevntative maintenance. Some people use a yamaha part or something.

Newer ones have vtak. Can't vouch for it because I have never ridden a bike with vtak.

The extra low end torque over a 600 is noticeable. You won't leave 2nd gear in the city. Ever. Engine lugs below 3k in second, it's kind of snatchy in 1st. Lives and breathes everywhere above 5k.

It's a heavy bike that gets poor fuel economy, but it is comfy.

>wide banana seat
>high clipons stock
>lower pegs than a CBR
>CBS actually isn't that bad, shortens braking distances, can't see it being bad unless you're riding on ice sand and the one front piston the rear activates will wash you out

If you don't have factory luggage, don't get it. They're clamshell cases. Save your money for nice aftermarket.

The engine isn't really my concern. A 600 feels lame as fuck compared to a 450 until you get way up into the revs.

It's the ergonomics which generally aren't very conductive to learning good street riding habits. I also think it's better to get something with relatively neutral ergos for a first (street) bike so you can be relatively comforable and also make a more informed decision as to what kind of bike will make you happiest long-term.

I never said he would die, just that I wouldn't recommend it.

Like an inch lower seat and pegs, a wider gear spread, and bodywork actually designed for wind protection actually. Also banana seat maybe.

i went on a night drive on mullholland once with a couple of friends in an ancient red convertible with blown out speakers. i had the long hair so i got to sit in the back and sit up on the seat so my head stuck up over the windshield and it whipped everywhere. i thought my friend's driving was going to kill us a couple of times but everything went well and we had fun. took a picture at a lookout spot high up on the side of the hill overlooking LA that i still use as my phone wallpaper (am in TX currently, but will be going back to LA eventually).

would recommend. yeah, might want to take it easy.

seat isn't low. It's even higher than some supersports. Not sure about the pegs but there's plenty of aftermarket pegs available for supersports as well.
Gear spread is super close and track-oriented just like any other supersport. Bodywork is similar to any other supersport. Banana seat doesn't really affect anything other than looks and there's split seat F4i models as well.

I actually ended up loving the loneliest road through NV, weirdly beautiful and remote. You go from tall mountain peaks and winding roads to long flat straightaways every 15 minutes or so.Then if your heading to California or I-5 in general you can also go over the Sierra Nevada mountains which are spectacular. Hopefully I'll be able to buy a nice bike and save up time off for work to head out again soon

The KX forums tried to tell me that all MX bikes drag a little, and that I should just file down the old basket and that'd be as good as it'd get. Chumps.
Finally got to test out my 12oz flywheel weight though. I think it might be slightly too heavy, the bike sorta feels like it bogs accelerating off idle, but I can't really test it until I get out in the dirt.

Old Gold Wings are sweet anon, you should get one.

There's a bunch for sale near me that are either the full fairing versions in mechanically good shape but with aged cosmetics, or half finished obnoxious customs.

I managed to buy a restored one with 10k miles. Starting to consider just keeping it forever.

But I don't know what I'm going to do when I have the comfy goldwing, versatile dual sport, and fast track sport, because I'm still going to want a project bike and I promised myself only 3 at a time.

There's 1985 Honda V65 Sabre 1100 for sale near me right now though for a sort of decent price and I really want it.

What, the other pre-R6 ones with high clip-ons? Suzuki went down towards it for some fucking reason but it's still higher.

I like how you're acting as if risers and rearsets are free.

>Bodywork is similar to any other supersport
It's significantly higher. I know it's not blatantly obvious at a glance but the front bodywork is as much higher as the bars are and the rider is as much lower relative to it as the seat is so you're looking at a good 2-3" more body coverage for the same forward lean as a 600RR. (although the RRs have more arched screens stock so the highest point of the windscreen isn't too different) If you put risers on the newer bike it starts jacking them up out of the fairing. Might even be clearance issues to get to the same seat to bar relationship.

the biggest differences are:

>looks way better/higher quality and comes in funky colors

aside from that i think it made a slight difference and made the brakes a little more precise, i guess with 2-piston calipers everything helps.

Up to three seconds before the crash you could've just as well assumed that the person was merely pulling out of the parking lot, especially considering the cunt DIDN'T FUCKING BOTHER TO INDICATE the direction of their irratic movement.

Secondly I highly doubt that crossing a total of five lanes at a 30° angle. It's not crossing unless you do it in a reasonably perpendicular fashion. The stupid fuckwit was simply too lazy to properly get into a lane and make a proper turn a hundred feet ahead and thought just cutting across would be perfectly okay.

he was actually going pretty fast and trying to enjoy that 5.6s 0-60. launched from the light, had four seconds to accelerate before seeing the car. yeah, he wasn't expecting anything bad to happen. too bad something bad happened.

for braking potential reference:
GSXR600 does 60-0 in 122ft
Ninja300 with ABS does 60-0 in 135ft
Honda civic does it in 118ft

>>17191343
Even so, you should always expect car drivers to ILLEGALLY cross several lanes and accelerate as slowly as possible because they heard they got better mpgees that way. Anyone who drives a car on a weekly basis could tell you to expect that shit. Whether he was crossing or not, it was clear he was headed across several lanes and might have taken a while to get up to speed, so the option was obviously to brake, and then swerve around his back because there's no way he was going to actually reverse. Hopefully.

Public traffic wouldn't fucking work if you had to assume everyone else to be the most retarded idiot in the world. Public traffic works because people can assume each other to follow the rules and avoid crashes in their own interest.
>>
>>17191367
>Living in a bad area
>>
>>17191346
it's legal like going five over is legal. technically, you have to spend a reasonable amount of time and distance in each lane. practically, that means you're going to take a very long time to cross the street and might have to do a U-turn at the next light. no police officer will fault you for just corssing.

they will fault you from taking off from a stoplight like a fucking banshee and then wondering why you ran into someone though.

>>17191368
Reality: People expect common behaviour, not necessarily the letter of the law. Like, if someone pulls out and crosses the nearest lane, they're at least going to take the second lane, or maybe head across the street. If you're in the second lane slow down. If you can't, get in the first lane because it's going to be empty.

Unexpected driving would be pulling out into the second lane and then darting into the first.

Also no visible indicator from the left side might mean they were turning right onto the road, so they didn't do anything unexpected.

The redditgay is 100% at fault. Car or bike, no fucking jury in the world would watch that video and say "yeah, fuckin cager".

>>
>>17191400
The expected thing was that they were crossing into the second lane (illegally - but it's a common action that EVERYBODY EXPECTS). They went across the first lane and left it empty. Where else woudl they go? Maybe the center turn lane? If the faggot on the scooter expected that he would have gone into the first lane and not crashed.

By the time he was braking the right lane was already clear. He could have stopped braking and swerved into it. Most car drivers would do just that. But he didn't, because he was a shitty rider that couldn't brake and couldn't turn.

At that point I'll have my full license (no test in MN if you pass the BRC). Next month I have BRC2 refresher at Driver Academy, and next spring when I go down south to visit family I'm going to see about hitting the BMW Performance Center in Greenville SC for their Rider Academy.

>>
>>17191416

>>
>>17191492

5500 is unusually cheap for an FZ09 though. You got a great deal but it doesn't mean it'll be that cheap for everybody. And it's 4.1k in bongistan compared to the MT09's 7.8k.

Besides, it's made for the European A2 license so of course it doesn't make much sense to burgers.
>>
>>17191501
But its a burger who bought it.

Yes I got it cheap (actually 7500 cad, works out to 5500usd) but the point still stands that a burger dropped that on a 300cc when basically any other option would have been better for a first bike.
>>
>>17191492
I haven't seen an Fz09 for less than $9k around here. After talking to BMW, I should take delivery of the bike + some options (top case, LED turn signals retrofit, added 12V socket) for $5500.

>>
>>17191605
Not like that matters too much in flat MN.

A 2004 camry has the same 0-60 times, and can actually handle a freeway. 300's make poor starter bikes here, period.
>>
>>17191642

What has a camry got to do with anything? Small displacement bikes are slow, that's no secret, but motorcycles are generally toys. Somebody that is considering a 300 clearly isn't somebody that is going to be putting highway miles in, that's what cars are for.
>>
>>17191666
Apparently some people think that if a car can't full throttle to 60 in five seconds and run up to 140, it's unfit for red lights and 65 mph highway traffic.
>>
>>17191642
