What's the deal with old goldwings?

Are they comfy?

>>17152431

How are they maintenance and reliability wise?

I'm looking for something for doing 100-1000 mile cruises on, so handling isn't a huge deal as long as I'm not going to fling myself off the side of a mountain pass or something.

never had one but it's not uncommon to find goldwings with 100k miles on them. A 35 year old bike with 10k miles probably spent most of it's life sitting though, so I wouldn't expect it to be the most mechanically sound thing in the world.

I have no idea what to think about mileage on bikes.

There are bikes with 5k, 15k, 25k, and 45k miles that are all equally clean looking and will all start, run, and ride with no issues. How do you get an idea of when the bike is going to need major work? How do you know what mileage is safe to buy at what price?
>>
What do people think of the Cleveland CycleWerks bikes? Saw one today and the guy was telling me he loved his.
>>
>>17152440
They're pretty good for maintenance if it's been taken care of, when my dad had his it was very reliable (mind you that was 15 years ago). It depends a lot on how the previous owner/owners treated it. But those bikes are good for at least 120k miles.

>>17152505
>Buying a 4 season jacket
>not buying 15 different jackets to specifically suit each and every weather condition you might face

>>17152515
Every bike is different. Buying a gsxr with 40k miles on it is idiotic but grabbing a touring bike with that is completely fine.

How's the average standard, cruiser, or touring bike with 20-30k? I've been avoiding them because the bike I have now has a 25k clutch life and a 35-40k top end life, but I know all bikes are different. I don't have enough experience to know what bikes / engines last how long.

I'd do it if I knew the guy and it was well cared for.
Most bikes will last 100k miles if you don't abuse them.

>>17152560
Maintenance and type of riding matters way more than just mileage as a number. 20-30k is fine if it looks like it's been taken care of. Old dudes that put 20k on in 10 years but still changed the oil every 1000 miles are the best.

i didnt like it too much in the open wind due to the size and weird spoilers made it hard to look around comfortably.
the huge bubble lens was nice since it didnt fog up easily though.

if you have a good windscreen or wont be in the wind over 70mph too much its pretty good and breathes ok. otherwise id go for something sleeker

They're screens are unbelievably shit. They have a killer anti-fog coating that when it wears away reveals that the factory scratched the shit out of the visor to let it adhere. At least the visors are cheap.

Wind noise is huge, ventilation is shit and the padding is ok.

Check out Gold Wing forums for questions on any specific machine. This is not a Gold Wing forum.

They aren't bad to maintain IF they are in good shape. If you do timing belts doing the water pump while there is a good idea.

Gold Wing forums have what you need to know. I've gotten plenty of flogged Wings trashed by idiots running after long neglect.

The fuse holders for glass fuses on early Wings are shit and loosen. I'd replace with a blade fuse block if loose.

Asked yesterday but gots no response.

Gonna teach myself to ride tomorrow, the bikes a 1600cc Harley with forward controls and 12" apehangers. The bikes out in the country the road is gravel, the driveway is dirt and the lawn is well.. grass.

How fucked am I on a scale of 1 to 11?

Any tips?

To the immediate right of the driveway is a hill, sort of steep, no run up just turn and you're going up a hill.

To the other side a hill going down into a valley.

I may have bent the handlebars. I think they are misaligned but I honestly got back, washed it and put it away. Works has been super busy this week.

How's the bike otherwise? Felt comfortable on the trip? Trust it? What mileage are you at? Are you going OEM or going to rebuild it?

Got skid plate, lower engine bars and rear brake reservoir cover. Don't know what I want on the upper bars. The HBs black Dog sells and works with their lowers have not really sold me on them.

Going up Coleman canyon on the loop the CRF250 couldn't keep up on the uphill section and couldn't eat the tank trap bumps (2 to 3 foot tall) at the 40+mph speeds we were doing. The AT impressed me. It ate that shit up for breakfast.

I don't imagine it being pleasant but I figured if I take my time and practice one step at a time. Like spend a few hours until me and the friction zone of the bike are intimately involved, then move on to a short 10 foot go and stop, power walk the bike in a turn, 10 foot go and stop again, keep doing that until its 100% smooth, then throw in a turn...

Just keep adding on a piece until I'm going I figure.. getting it up that hill from the driveway is gonna hurt, it's a turn into a hill with zero run up, soon as you turn you're climbing...

I was on it a little bit before and when it starts going it lightens up really well but stall it and the whole front end collapses and the handlebars twist and the bike wants to tumble.. hard on the legs to try and keep it up.

yeah, no hiccups at all, just a mysterious clunk when i jump it which is probably some shit i had packed in/on it.
goign to do skf seals since the oem ones arent a tight enough fit and get shit caught in them easily which is why they leak now, just clicked over to 5400 miles.

and research your bars, some uppers and lowers may not be compatible because of needed mounting points. so far the givi bars haf been good to me and the MV plate was just updated to fit with them, HB bars im not too keen on since guys have had them crack cases open in crashes already.
and get some bar guards on there too, barkbusters has a direct fit kit, otherwise go with some cycras since theyre some of the toughests ones ive found

WR250R has enough power to cruise on the freeway without issue and actually has a wider gear ratio spread than bikes like the DRZ400, KLR650, DR650, etc.

And it's motor is smoother and requires less maintenance.
>>
>>17154102
Yea. I dunno. I really really want the ALT-Rider set up but the backorder is fucking ridiculous. Are they not in seattle? I am going over to I90-Motorsports next week to have the 600 mile service and once over. After that I will be doing most myself. Just figured first service and because of the drop i'd have another set of eyes. They also wanted to check valves as they have had to do adjustments on ATs in the past.

The problem with the ALT-rider is that they are proprietary as fuck so the skidplate and lower bars would have to be replaced to go with theirs.

Realistically was the damage to the case something that would have happened anyways or was it really a design flaw? Speed? Type of wreck?

Yea I'm gonna go with the barkbusters. Also might replace bar anyways for some rise.

Which is better and did I fuck up?
>>
>>17154320
This has nothing to do with my height and everything to do with beginners liking to be able to flat foot bikes for their confidence.

>>17154317
More like a manlet that wants to be a poser with a shitbike with knobbies so they can pretend they have a dirt bike.
>>
>>17154344
Acerbis are good. So are the Cycras. Acerbis has a wider range of looks and generally look better. The Cycras are usually cheaper though so most people get them.
>>
>>17154344
acerbis that ive had in the past have been pretty meh for the aluminum quality and bent too easy for my liking, that may be different now but i stick to cycras since ive beat them pretty hard on stuff and not bent one yet

>>
>>17154355
If you're a manlet and you can flat foot a 300 shitbike, you can flat foot a 250 dual sport. Especially considering most have built in seat height adjustment where you can lower them an inch.

A dual sport is better at pretending to be a dirt bike than a 300cc """sportbike""" will ever be pretending to be a real sportbike.

They're fine, more partial to the RC390 myself, but have friends that race R3's and they like them well enough. Also echo-ing that you probably shouldn't buy it new unless you have to. Resale is shit and trade-in is worse.

Take a class (if you haven't already). Get good gear. Ride the piss out of it. Learn to carry corner speed. Find a kart track that does small displacement bike track days. Learn to wring every bit of performance out of it. Turn it into a race bike. Join your local race club. Buy a middle weight. Do the same thing. Buy a liter bike. Don't die.

depends on the bike, depends on the road. I can put in a 200+ mile day on my Panigale if the road is twisty enough to keep me from thinking about how fucked up I feel. But yea, at the end I'm pretty wrecked.

Put in 400+ on my Multistrada two weeks ago, and wanted to take a 150-ish mile detour to hit some other twisty roads but we were losing the light and I don't fuck around with deer.

I just ride. A lot. I gave up having a car three years ago and bought a second bike instead. No regrets. I only need like 1 or 7 more bikes and then maybe I'll feel complete...

Having a slipper clutch doesnt make a bike a sport bike.

Dumping the clutch on a sport bike to get wheel slip into a turn is not something people do. In fact sport bikes are engineered with slipper clutches specifically so they don't do this.

the rear sliding is a byproduct nof being on the brakes unloading the rear and making a turn. Riders in MotoGP do not "back in" their bikes inorder to get them turned around acorner faster. Them sliding into the corner is a byproduct of riding fast.

The fact that you think this is analogous to supermoto backing the bike into the turn intentionally on the clutch shows just how little you know.

Just because people slide sport bikes into corners on the brakes does not mean sportbike riding is the same as supermoto or that they are intentionally doing it to go faster. Sliding in is a byproduct of going fast, not an intentional action meant to get the bike turned into a corner and around the track faster.
